he word soul comes to mind every time I step onto Mainstreet. Defined as “the essence and embodiment of something,” soul is what I see and feel in the faces and places of downtown Parker and, I suspect, the reason so many of us love it here. It was that “soul” that made it so fun and gratifying to work with many of you in putting together the November issue! Together with our fearless leader Andy Manz (also publisher for Lifestyle Publications in Boulder, Cherry Creek and Highlands Ranch) and the whole Lifestyle team, we’re so thrilled to be starting with you all in November, the most “promising” of months.

hile Americans deemed drunkenness deplorable for centuries, physicians of yore prescribed whiskey as medicine, encouraging and even prescribing it for keeping warm in the winter, restoring energy, and curing colds, fevers, depression and snakebites. To celebrate America’s enduring appetite for whiskey and the arrival of Colorado’s chilliest season, we stopped by the Parker Garage, known for having the largest whiskey menu - and some of the rarest whiskey finds - for miles around. On the rocks or cocktail style, Parker Garage bartender Kelton Steinmeier and Parker Garage owners Brent Walker and Meghan Gold showed us how it’s done - on the rocks or cocktail style. Enjoy their take on one of their favorite whiskey cocktails to serve up, the Sazerac Cocktail. Warm and connected to those around him, Jim was involved in children’s charities, helping children access the tools and support necessary to reach their potential. So when he was killed tragically in a car accident in 1998 along with his new wife of just two weeks, his children knew they needed to create a foundation to not only celebrate his life, but the lives of all of us and our ability to make a difference in the world. Growing up in Colorado, Parker Real Estate Broker Anne Barrington and her siblings learned early from parents Lorraine and Jim the importance of service to others. Taking in foster children and helping them realize their potential through support and nurturing, Jim and Lorraine showed Anne and her siblings how to make a difference. Working as a family, they made sandwiches for those in need, volunteered in soup kitchens and supported battered women’s shelters. “IT WAS JUST WHAT MY FAMILY DID,” ANNE SAYS.

A graduate of Colorado State University, Anne began her career in sales and was a fulltime real estate professional by 1999, the same year she and her sister and brother founded the Jim Gill Foundation. Since their first fundraising event in 1999, the 501(c)3 organization has raised over $110,000 for charities like The Challenge Foundation and the Alpine Autism Center, and most recently raised awareness and scholarship money for Hide In Plain Sight, a local program that helps 860-plus homeless students in the Douglas County School District.

Co-hosted by the Parker Garage, the Hide in Plain Sight fundraiser was the first in the Barrington Group Happy Hour Charity Series, 4 a program designed to raise money and awareness about local communities in need. “Through my business, I’ve gotten to know a lot of other people with a passion to give back, so that inspired me to bring the community together to make a difference for those in need,” said Anne, who's the mother of daughters, Shea, 16, and Drue, 13. "There are so many great charities right in our back yard that many aren’t even aware of. “My goal — with the support of the Parker Garage — is that our monthly Happy Hour Series will raise awareness about these communities,” said Anne. And make a difference she has. The Owner and Managing Broker of The Barrington Group, Anne and her

hand-picked team of elite real estate professionals regularly contribute to the Women’s Crisis Center by adopting families during the holidays. Other charitable causes in the queue for upcoming happy hour events include Project Linus, which provides blankets to comfort critically ill children, and the Parker Task Force, which relies entirely on volunteers and donations to providing local families in need with food, financial assistance, and help with utilities. n Colorado, much of today’s ski culture has an emphasis on backcountry or big mountain exploration. While inspiring, the prospect of setting out on exploratory ski missions in the middle of nowhere when avalanche deaths seem to be at an all-time high can seem uninviting and overwhelming. Where the heck do you even begin? Here are seven suggestions to follow if you’re serious about transitioning from resort junkie into someone who knows how to safely navigate and survive skiing or riding beyond mediated terrain.

01 LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN ABOUT SNOW.

Sounds trivial, but really. Start by reading your local snow report more regularly and begin to understand how the weather is affecting the snowpack. One resource for consistent forecasting is OpenSnow.com. An entire season of storms dictates what kind of snow you’re potentially skiing. Is it stable? Is there enough coverage? If you’ve been reading about regional snowfall, you’re a lot more likely to understand what the collection of layers are looking like and you’ll be able to follow along discussing skiing conditions. 02 GET THE GEAR AND UNDERSTAND ITS PURPOSE.

Initial items for keeping yourself safe include a shovel, a beacon and a probe, but you’ll also want to look into getting a good backpack, sensible layers or touring equipment. You don’t have to spend a fortune in your first season and buy everything at once; Craigslist or renting works, too. Also, try checking out your local sports recycler or see if a friend will lend these items to you. 03 TAKE AN AVALANCHE 1 COURSE.

Drop the money and get educated. Courses are generally a few days in length and cover the basics in reading terrain and snowpack, utilizing gear and assessing risk.

04 FOLLOW THE LEADERS.

Mentors matter. If you know someone who has been skiing out of bounds for a while now, ask them if they are willing to take you out skiing on some mellow terrain after you’ve taken your Avalanche 1 Course. Offer to drive or buy them an après meal. If you can’t coordinate a time to go exploring, invite him or her out for a drink and pick their brain. Ask them about how they got into backcountry skiing or about the lessons they’ve learned in the field over time.

Hiking legs are important, but skiing legs are what make it fun. The more you’re skiing, the better. Try to make it a point to get some resort laps in here or there throughout your season. It means you’re keeping your skiing legs in shape, and you’ll be more prepared to take aggressive turns in an ungroomed landscape.

05 GET YOUR CARDIO UP TO SPEED.

Skiing in the backcountry doesn’t just consist of steep turns and face-shots; a lot of time is spent hiking. The popular phrase “earn your turns” isn’t just talk, it takes work

Start talking to people and researching common places to ski or ride in your region. You may hear folks constantly talking about a certain trail or recreational area where they like to go touring. Study those places, the terrain traps associated with them and begin familiarizing yourself with that topography. Then, when the time is right, you’ll be ready to send it.
