Just an hour west of Fort Worth, where the city skyline gives way to rolling hills, winding creeks and wide-open skies, Ranger Ridge is redefining what luxury ranch living can look like in Texas. Set across 3,000 acres near historic Ranger Hill, the private ranch community began with a simple idea: create

“When the owners founded Ranger Ridge, they were in search of the same thing a lot of families in the DFW area are looking for,” says General Manager Peter Tam. “A legacy ranch. An escape from the city. Somewhere they can introduce their kids to the outdoors, conservation, hunting, fishing, and that whole lifestyle.”
BUILT FROM A SHARED VISION
Unlike many luxury developments, Ranger Ridge was not conceived in a boardroom. The founder originally set out looking for land for his own family within driving distance of Colleyville that felt removed from everyday life. When he discovered the property that would eventually become Ranger Ridge, the vision quickly expanded. “He started thinking, ‘I’m not the only guy looking for this kind of lifestyle for his family,’” Tam says. “It really snowballed from there.”
Ranger Ridge was intentionally designed around shared values and experiences. The result is a close-knit community, where members gather for trail rides, afternoons on the water, evenings around the firepit, and weekends spent outdoors with their children and friends. “This is more than selling dirt,” Tam says. “This is really a family that we’re building.”
For DFW families, much of the allure is the property’s accessibility. You can leave Dallas after work and still spend an evening horseback riding, fishing, or simply unwinding beneath the stars before returning home the next morning. It offers the feeling of being worlds away without extensive travel.
THE LUXURY OF CHOICE
Rather than prescribing a single version of ranch living, the Ranger Ridge community was designed to allow families to shape the experience around their own lifestyles, interests, and pace.
That flexibility begins with tiered membership offerings tailored to different outdoor experiences. Some residents spend weekends horseback riding through the preserve’s expansive trail systems, while others gravitate toward fishing the property’s stocked lakes, seasonal bird hunting, or spending afternoons at the shooting range.
“We created these memberships to allow every family to choose what fits best with their lifestyle,” Tam says. “You may get families that really aren’t into equestrianism all that much. They can leave that membership out and not really have to spend the time or money there if that’s not where their interests lie.”
Throughout the property, Ranger Ridge thoughtfully balances rugged outdoor living with optional white-glove service, allowing homeowners to decide how hands-on or hands-off they want their ranch experience to be. “If you want everything handled for you, it can be,” Tam says. “But if you still want to mow your own yard, tend to your property, work your own land, and do things yourself, you can.”
For some families, that means arriving with every detail already prepared. Maintenance teams can coordinate ranch services before homeowners get in, while guided hunting experiences, animal processing, and property upkeep can all be seamlessly arranged through the ranch staff.
Others prefer a more traditional, hands-on ranch experience. “It’s still a private ranch experience,” Tam says. “Plus all the amenities, plus the community, plus the fact that everything can be taken care of—if that’s what you want.”
A LANDSCAPE WORTH PRESERVING
Long before development plans entered the conversation, the land itself was the driving force behind Ranger Ridge. The property’s dramatic elevation changes, natural creeks, and expansive views surprise many first-time visitors, particularly those expecting the flat terrain often associated with Texas.
For Tam, who grew up in South Africa, the property’s unique terrain evokes memories of home. “There are certain parts of the land that just take me back to Africa,” he says. “People come out and say, ‘I didn’t know this existed right outside of Dallas.’”
That landscape has also become the focus of an ongoing conservation effort. Over the past several years, the Ranger Ridge team has invested heavily in

restoring native habitats across the property, removing invasive cedar growth, and improving conditions for wildlife populations. Wild turkey, quail, and waterfowl populations have increased significantly as habitats continue to improve, reinforcing the property’s long-term commitment to the surrounding environment.
MORE THAN A WEEKEND ESCAPE
As Ranger Ridge continues to grow, its leadership remains intentional about preserving the culture that has shaped the community from the beginning. “We’re not just out there to sell a lot,” Tam says. “We’ve been very intentional about who we’re trying to bring out there.”
That intentionality has helped foster a closeknit atmosphere where members often feel more like extended family than neighbors. Shared values, outdoor experiences, and time spent together naturally create connections that extend beyond property lines. “It’s really becoming more like a family than a community,” Tam says. In many ways, the sense of belonging might be the property’s greatest luxury of all. Not just the land or amenities, but the opportunity to create lasting memories. MAJESTIC ALASKAN ADVENTURE
INTREPID TRAVELER PARK CITIES LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE PUBLISHER LINDA LIVINGSTON IS AT IT AGAIN, THIS TIME TAKING THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME TO ALASKA.
In May, Linda Livingston and her party took a journey into “the last frontier,” the forty-ninth state of Alaska. A gift from her mother, Carol, who came along in a group that also included her husband, Mark Hanna; her brother, Jim; her sister, Kate; and their spouses. “A family affair,” says Linda. Alaska conjures rich visions of pristine natural beauty, accented by brilliant sunsets, panoramas of majestic mountains, vast glaciers, and dense green forests. Linda’s expectations involved bald eagles, humpback whales, bears, mountain goats, sea lions, and native wildlife dotting the crystal waters and rugged landscape. She wasn’t disappointed.
“Starting in Seattle, we boarded the Celebrity Edge on May 22,” says Linda. Experts estimate over 1.7 million people travel to Alaska annually aboard cruise ships. The group journeyed along Alaska’s Inside Passage with stops in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The boat docked in Ketchikan. Dappled with fishing camps, Ketchikan is rural and among the most enchanting locales in Alaska. Just off the boat is a large warehouse for shopping. It’s also a place to nosh, sip local suds, and enjoy bright sunny skies when available. Ketchikanites depend on tourism and are accommodating. Totem poles speckle the area along steep roads in the town that was once renowned for its pulp mills. Bald eagles are plentiful throughout the area, impressively swooping from the sky to capture prey below. The climate is maritime in tone, and the waters in the region are deep and historic. One guide told stories of seeing submarines on
training exercises in the region due to the depth of the waters around Ketchikan. With local creeks and remote fly-out wilderness trips, Ketchikan is an angler’s paradise. “We flew 50 miles inland via Family Air over snow-capped mountains on the way to our fly fishing guided destination -- a breathtaking experience,” says Linda.
The group’s next stop was Juneau, Alaska’s capital city. Nestled at the base of Mount Juneau, May is a perfect time to visit. Juneau is not a big town, with only around 32,000 people in the summer. “Locals told us the population scales back significantly during the harsh winter months,” says Linda. It’s a fascinating blend of cultures. But make no mistake, Juneau is a city driven by sightseers. Massive cruise ships in port, and seaplanes taking off and landing, are commonplace in the Alaskan Panhandle city. The scenic quality of the region is impressive and infinitely walkable, especially along the hundreds of boats of all shapes and sizes on the waterfront. There are also tons of small, eclectic shops and one-of-a-kind galleries featuring native Alaskan art. The Juneau-Douglas City Museum is a good place to spend a couple of hours learning about the history. Linda and Mark rented a car for the day. Driving through the meandering streets is relaxing. The storied Mendenhall Glacier is visible from the road, and the forests, trails, and waterfalls are a fascinating visual departure from the flat North Texas terrain. As for the weather, good-quality rain gear is critical. “You just never know when the spring and summer skies may open up with a rainstorm,” says Linda. Unpredictability is something Alaska and Dallas-Fort Worth share in common. The Red Dog Saloon is a

Juneau landmark founded during the town’s early mining boom, and referred to as the city’s oldest man-made tourist attraction. It’s usually packed with tourists lining up for its layered cocktail shot, the “duck fart,” considered by many to be Alaska’s official drink. “It sounds awful, but it was actually a tasty little tradition,” says Linda. King crab is plentiful and truly a majestic sight. Right off the dock is Tracy’s King Crab Shack. “I have never seen anything the size of those crabs,” Linda says. Alaskan king crab is served by the leg, plus Dungeness and snow crab are favorites. Awesome. Next on the agenda was Skagway. The town is surrounded by the Sawtooth Range, a subrange of the Boundary Ranges within the Coast Mountains. Spruce, aspen, and birch trees are plentiful. Once a rugged mining outpost at the height of the Gold Rush, Skagway remains steeped in frontier history and adventure. The town found its way onto the silver screen in classic movies like “The Far Country,” starring James
Stewart, and “North to Alaska,” with John Wayne. It also served as a backdrop for Jack London’s legendary novel, “The Call of the Wild.” A journey into the storied Klondike is unforgettable. Rich in history and surrounded by breathtaking scenery, every turn offers postcard-worthy views, so keep cameras close; the images and memories are certain to last a lifetime. Visitors can relive the Gold Rush by panning for gold, soar above towering ice fields on helicopter excursions, or meet championship Iditarod mushers and their spirited sled dogs at remote training camps. Friendly and energetic, the dogs are always eager for love and attention. “For Mark and me, it was an opportunity for flyfishing,” says Linda. The couple ferried to Haines Island. From there, the Haines Fly Guides whisked them into the heart of the wilderness. The rivers around Haines contain species of Pacific Salmon, Dolly Varden, Cutthroat Trout, and Steelhead. Linda, Mark, and their guide fished in the Chilkat and Chilkoot Rivers. “Brown bears are a common sight in the area, often fishing the same waters as visitors like us,” says Linda. “Thankfully, the guides know how to handle wildlife encounters.”
On the return trip to Seattle, Linda’s group spent the night in Vancouver, which offered the perfect chance to unwind from the nonstop hiking, driving, fishing, and sightseeing. Vancouver dazzled the group with its colorful blooms, scenic waterfronts, and the sprawling beauty of Stanley Park, one of North America’s largest green spaces. The city’s subtle reminders of its British heritage added even more charm.
“We arrived in Seattle on May 29 and gathered ourselves, our memories, and all our luggage for the flight home to Dallas,” says Linda. Did the journey live up to their bucket-list dreams? “Absolutely,” Linda says.

Tucked away in Magnolia, Texas, surrounded by quiet countryside and open skies, retired military and working dogs are discovering something many of them have never fully experienced before: life beyond service. At the rehabilitation facility operated by Mission K9 Rescue, highly trained canines once tasked with detecting explosives, patrolling military bases, or protecting handlers overseas are now learning how to simply be dogs.
Since 2013, Mission K9 Rescue has dedicated itself to ensuring retired military and working dogs receive the dignity, medical care, and loving homes they deserve after years of service. What began as a mission to reunite military dogs with their former handlers has evolved into a global rescue organization supporting retired dogs from the military, police departments, TSA units, border patrol, and international working contracts.
Inside the Magnolia facility, the transformation is remarkable. Dogs accustomed to rigid schedules and constant commands slowly adjust to soft beds, toys, treats, and affection. For many, it is the first time they have experienced the rhythms of family life.

“WHAT WE THOUGHT WE WERE DOING WAS SAVING AN OLD RETIRED WORKING DOG,” SHE SAYS. “FROM DAY ONE, AUTEN PLOWED STRAIGHT INTO MICHAEL’S LIFE LIKE HE HAD FINALLY FOUND HIS SOULMATE.”
Founder Kristen Mauer never intended to build an internationally recognized rescue organization. Her journey began volunteering at a local animal shelter before one unforgettable dog changed everything. A white German Shepherd named Roxie became one of her earliest experiences working with highly trained K9s. “So smart and very special,” Kris recalls. “Nothing was ever planned.”
The dogs Mission K9 Rescue serves are elite working animals trained for specialized roles including narcotics detection, explosives detection, patrol operations, and dual-purpose assignments. “On the contrary, to popular misconceptions, these dogs are not trained using narcotics or explosives themselves. Instead, handlers use reward-based systems built around toys and play, creating extraordinary drive, discipline, and focus.” noted Mauer.
Retirement often arrives between six and 13 years old, depending on the dog’s physical condition and assignment history. Throughout their careers, handlers may come and go as military orders change, while the dogs remain stationed in place. When retirement approaches, former handlers are given the opportunity to adopt their canine partners, though in many cases multiple handlers may have worked alongside the same dog over the years.
Mission K9 Rescue became especially vital before recent military regulation changes helped streamline the process of bringing retired military dogs back to the United States. While some military branches handled reunifications internally, organizations like Mission K9 Rescue often stepped in to coordinate international transport, veterinary care, and adoption placement for dogs returning from overseas assignments.
The transition from service life to home life is rarely immediate. Many retired working dogs arrive carrying physical and emotional scars from years in demanding environments. Anxiety, PTSD, joint deterioration, tumors, and chronic medical conditions are common challenges. Each dog receives individualized rehabilitation and veterinary support tailored to their needs.
“Each dog is different, just like humans are different,” Kristen explains.
Adopters are carefully matched based on lifestyle, home environment, and energy levels. The organization does not publicly list dogs online. Instead, adoption coordinators work personally with families to identify compatible matches, often presenting several carefully selected options. Families are encouraged to
give the dogs time and patience as they adjust to their new surroundings.
That thoughtful approach has resulted in an extraordinary 98 percent adoption success rate. To date, Mission K9 Rescue has reunited nearly 800 canine-handler teams while placing hundreds more into loving homes across the country.
The financial commitment behind the mission is immense. Monthly food expenses alone average roughly $3,500, while annual veterinary costs exceed $200,000. International rescue missions can surpass $30,000 for only a handful of dogs once flights, cargo fees, permits, and medical clearances are included. Yet the organization continues working tirelessly to bring dogs home from countries including Kuwait, Turkey, Bosnia, and Yemen.
For many families, these retired working dogs become far more than pets. Nancy Southerland witnessed that transformation firsthand through her son Michael’s bond with a retired K9 named Auten.
“What we thought we were doing was saving an old retired working dog,” she says. “From day one, Auten plowed straight into Michael’s life like he had finally found his soulmate.”
The connection changed both lives. Auten gave Michael comfort, stability, and unconditional companionship. In return, Michael gave the aging dog a peaceful home, love, and belonging.
“I truly believe rescue works both ways,” Nancy says.
At Mission K9 Rescue, that belief lives in every reunion, every adoption, and every retired hero finally finding rest after a lifetime of service.
