LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Healthy Balance You don’t have to have known me for long to figure out that I’m passionate about health and wellness. Not many topics can get me fired up like the latest health and fitness trends. And yes, I’m one of those annoying people who wakes up every day at 5:30 a.m. excited about my workout and my post-workout meal. I know; I’m sorry. If you’ve read about any particular form of exercise or wellness tactic, I’ve probably tried it. Running half marathons? Check. Powerlifting? Check. HIIT and cycle classes? Check. Cold plunging, infrared saunas, sound baths, and therapy? Check. I also strive to eat healthy for the most part because I know that’s what fuels my fitness, but don’t be mistaken: I can still put away a pizza or a bowl of ice cream. I think my fascination with trying different methods of physical movement stems from a childhood spent playing all types of sports—always in competition with myself to improve. Over the years I’ve loved seeing what the human body is capable of, and—spoiler alert—it’s always more than you think. For me, pushing myself physically also pushes me mentally, and I’ve found that the mental is just as, if not more, important. But, as with any area of life, it’s crucial to find a good balance between being active and taking the rest you need—something I’m frankly still learning. With the New Year often comes unrealistic expectations and pressure, and ultimately that may not be helpful for what you want to accomplish. What if we ditched the expectations and focused on sustainable health and wellness habits that make us feel happy and fulfilled? Maybe that’s trying a new class or recovery mode for the first time, or maybe it’s focusing on our mental health and resting. If it’s setting a new goal or picking up an old one, make it something that you look forward to. I hope that you find health and wellness inspiration in the pages of this issue—whether that’s booking a relaxing facial with HD Skin (page 12), visiting an incredible local fitness studio (page 18), boosting your mental health at HeadFirst Counseling (page 26), or enjoying healthy fare from Origin Kitchen + Bar (page 36), among others. Here’s to a healthy and happy new year that brings you joy! CHRISTIANA STEPHENS, EDITOR @ PA R KC I T I E S L I F E S T Y L E

HALEY EVERETT OF DALLAS’ HD SKIN PROMOTES WELLNESS THROUGH CORRECTIVE SKINCARE AND RELAXATION—AND HER IMPECCABLE RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.

The Queen

of Skincare ARTICLE BY CHRISTIANA STEPHENS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRANT MILLER

S KIN CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

Licensed aesthetician Haley Everett knows that a large part of health and wellness stems from good skincare, not just in how a person looks but also in how they feel. That’s why she founded HD Skin: to help clients feel good in their own skin as they age using both medical and holistic products and techniques to address different skin issues. Her new space, located in The Village, is tailor-made to provide real results along with relaxation for those in the Park Cities and beyond. We caught up with Everett about all things skincare and wellness. TELL ME ABOUT HD SKIN. WHAT CAN YOUR CLIENTS EXPECT? HD Skin was born from a vision to create a corrective skincare studio where clients see great results mixed with a space of relaxation, because I believe that you can have both. For services, I offer chemical peels, facials, nano needling, micro channeling—a variety of services that help with fine lines, wrinkles, texture, acne, and hyperpigmentation. YOU JUST MOVED TO A BEAUTIFUL NEW SPACE, BUT WHY DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS ORIGINALLY? I’ve been in the skincare world since 2018, and I’ve worked in skincare sales with a lot of aestheticians and felt like there was a void in the market. I didn’t see many spas that were customer-oriented as well as business-minded. I wanted to offer an experience that focused on both the correction and the relaxation, and I just didn’t see that anywhere. I wanted HD Skin to be an experience where you can have both. I decided to get my license in 2019, and the vision began. CONTINUED >

WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS, WHAT ROLE DOES SKINCARE PLAY IN SOMEONE’S LIFE? Skincare is a huge piece of wellness because in everyday life you always want to put your best face forward. When it comes to skincare, maintaining, preventing, and aging gracefully all give you confidence in yourself and confidence in your skin. In addition, skin plays a crucial role with physical health. Skin cancer is one of the deadliest cancers in the world, and it’s important not only to correct and look great, but also to prevent and protect. Make sure to get checked proactively at the dermatologist. I KNOW YOU’VE PERSONALLY STRUGGLED WITH ACNE AND OTHER SKIN ISSUES. HOW HAS ADOPTING GOOD SKINCARE YOURSELF AFFECTED YOUR OVERALL WELLNESS? My personal wellness is a driving factor of why I started HD Skin because I have struggled severely with acne and tried so many medications. Being an aesthetician, I have a unique advantage to not only help other people but help myself take a more holistic approach to our skin journeys.

14

S KIN CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

HOW DOES NUTRITION AFFECT OUR SKIN? Skin really requires a 360-degree approach. Your skin is always trying to tell you something, so what you’re putting in your body is a huge factor. There are natural supplements you can take that help to promote healthy skin. Zinc is one that can help with skin inflammation, and the No. 1 biggest thing that you can do for your skin is drink more water. YOUR JOB CAN BE PHYSICALLY DEMANDING. HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF SO YOU CAN TAKE CARE OF YOUR CLIENTS? It is definitely a physical job, so I have to make sure I focus on my posture every day. I also have to make sure to get a good workout in to keep myself flexible and strong. My secret weapon is getting dry needled in my neck by a physical therapist, which does wonders. IF SOMEONE DOESN’T KNOW WHERE TO START WHEN IT COMES TO AT-HOME SKINCARE, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM? There are five basic products for a well-rounded routine that everyone should be on: a good cleanser that’s not stripping, vitamin c that helps fight free radical damage, a great moisturizer that nourishes the skin barrier, retinol that helps to turn over the skin, and sunscreen, no matter what. Skincare is for everyone. hdskindallas.com

Wesley Wellness Club Founder Kyle Davis

Commercial real estate lawyer Kyle Davis was inspired to launch the fitness and wellness concept Wesley during COVID, when she realized how much she missed seeing the people she knew from her gym. “I wanted to create a space where people could walk in, and everybody knows your name; you feel like a part of a community—you feel like a part of a family,” Davis says. She also wanted to house several aspects of self-care under one roof, recognizing the struggle many women face to balance their careers, kids, and health and wellness. “It was hard to find time to do one thing and go to one location for self-care, let alone go to multiple locations throughout the day or throughout the week,” she explains. “I tried to incorporate as much [selfcare] as I could into one brick and mortar location, so that it’s just one-stop shopping for the gal on the go.” Recently opened on Ross and named for Davis’ daughter, Wesley offers yoga, mobility, cardio, and strength-focused group classes alongside recovery amenities including infrared sauna, lymphatic massage rollers, and a cold plunge pool. It also gives members access to a grab-and-go snack shop called Feed Me Pronto and a social gathering space to host events and foster togetherness. CONTINUED >

Session Pilates

Founder and operating owner Brittany Grignon “Session is not your typical reformer Pilates,” says Brittany Grignon. “We take a more modern, athletic approach.” The founder and operating owner launched Session in Uptown in 2016 with a profit-share model, under which the success of the studio directly impacts the success of the instructors. Now, the Dallas Pilates staple has grown to four locations, including venues in Lakewood, Plano, and Lovers Lane. Its 50-minute classes feature a music-centered method, in which quick transitions on the reformer keep Pilates practitioners moving and on beat. Session’s regularly packed group workouts cater to all levels, and instructors provide adjustments and modifications to help ensure a safe and challenging burn. Grignon says community—inside and outside the studio—is also integral to Session’s model. Session hosts classes each month that give back to The Family Place, a local nonprofit that works with survivors of family violence, providing housing, counseling, and skills development. “Whether it’s our monthly donation-based classes, where 100% of proceeds benefit The Family Place, or it’s hosting our annual Pool Party or casual happy hour where we get to hang out with clients outside of the studio, for us, community is key,” Grignon says.

Class Studios Co-owner and creative

director Paige Martindell Fitness instructor, entrepreneur, graphic designer, and photographer Paige Martindell launched Class Studios in West Village in 2018 alongside her business partner Jasmine Zutter. “Jasmine was at a place in her career where she was ready to start her own studio and decided to place her trust in a passionate 23-year-old to help bring that vision to fruition,” Martindell says. The concept initially offered cycle and circuit-style group workouts—a unique pairing for studios at the time. Within two years, Class Studios grew to a second location in Preston Center, where it rolled out two new formats focused on cardio and muscle toning, called Tread and Sculpt. More recently, recovery formats Stretch + Sound and Flow were added to the Preston Center roster. “We’ve been passionate about cross training and mindful movement,” Martindell says. “We believe exercise routines should be dynamic.” Now, Class Studios offers more than eight unique group class formats. Each aims to foster and celebrate a tightknit fitness community, where achievements and milestone events, such as birthdays or attending 100 classes, are celebrated. “Community has been our ‘why’ since the very beginning,” Martindell says. “It feels like we’re still just getting started because of the big dreams on the horizon.” CONTINUED >

Jungle Studio Fitness Founder Ashley Farzad (not pictured)

Former director of yoga at North Dallas’ TruFusion, Ashley Farzad opened Jungle Studio Fitness in Bishop Arts District in 2022. The concept offers five 45- and 60-minute class formats focused on strengthening and/or toning and yoga. Its signature is Pilates Sculpt, a mat-based hybrid class that uses Pilates movements, body weight exercises, and light dumbbell weights to improve cardio endurance, strength, and flexibility. It also offers a yin yoga and sound bath, in which yogis practice grounding poses while listening to the sounds of gongs, sound bowls, and more. Designed with a resort feel in mind, Jungle fosters relaxation through its aesthetic, which features ample greenery, candles, and bamboo.

For the professionals at HeadFirst Counseling, fostering healthy lives through treatment and counseling is their priority. Child and adolescent therapist Laura McLaughlin is the company’s

HeadFirst provides the best in evidence-based treatments. “All of the therapy interventions we provide have been validated through research to demonstrate positive impact and reduction of symptoms for clients,” says McLaughlin. Her organization is a collaboration among experienced therapists from diverse backgrounds, training, and licensure. Clients get the benefit of a team approach, whose focus is children, adolescents, and teens. Those patients come from many backgrounds, too. McLaughlin says the typical client may suffer from a mix of environmental factors or “triggers” due to a significant event such as a change in schools or divorce, coupled with a pre-existing tendency or

Their holistic focus is centered on the “entire child,” not simply current symptoms, says McLaughlin. “There is much therapeutic benefit to seeing the strengths and positives in a child or situation, even when things seem grim. This simple reframe can have a significant impact in terms of outcomes.” McLaughlin believes mental health issues have intensified. “The pandemic exacerbated things, particularly for marginalized populations and low-income families,” she says. for services increased, the ability to pay for those services decreased, creating an unprecedented demand for therapy. In 2022, McLaughlin founded the HeadFirst Mental Health Initiative, a nonprofit within the practice. Today it is a standalone 501(c)3 providing free mental health services and counseling to children, adolescents, and families who could otherwise not afford it. HMHI has already provided more than 175 free counseling sessions, and McLaughlin expects that number to grow with more fundraising. HMHI is hosting its first mental wellness pop-up late this month. The event is designed to reduce the stigma associated with mental health by creating experiences that are fun and imaginative, “to get us talking to one another about our mental health.” It will include multiple programming events and various companies connected to mental wellness. HeadFirst Counseling is a partner, planning and coordinating speakers, experts, and vendors, while HMHI is the beneficiary. For McLaughlin, the goal of the pop-up is to create a memorable experience. “We believe that having real conversations about mental health will continue to reduce stigmas and enable people to take control of their own mental wellness and that of their family,” she says. “If the primary caregivers in a household are mentally well and supported, the rest will fall in line.” McLaughlin encourages Park Cities residents to volunteer and contribute financially. McLaughlin’s vision includes additional community collaborations and partnerships to increase reach and impact. “Ideally, our private practice will continue to be a resource for families and parents in the Park Cities area for systemic change.” She acknowledges progress but says there is more work to do. “In 10 years, if a child who needs services has access to and receives the services they need and can talk openly about their personal experience with mental health treatments without feeling any sense of shame, inadequacy, judgment, or embarrassment, then that’s a pretty good place to be.”

Hospitality TAKES FLIGHT THE NEWH GALA HELD AT THE FRONTIERS OF FLIGHT MUSEUM BENEFITED STUDENTS IN CREATIVE AND HOSPITALITY FIELDS.

T

he Frontiers of Flight Museum in West Dallas was filled with revelers from across the hospitality spectrum on October 20, 2023, for the Fundraiser and Scholarship Dinner hosted by NEWH Dallas. In 2022, a star-studded blowout at the Nasher Sculpture Center raised over $75,000. Fundraising Director Micaela Sheffield, Fundraising Chair Angelle Bevier, and VP of Development Luis Araujo soared beyond expectation with 2023’s first-class experience. Founded in 1991, the Dallas chapter of NEWH, the international network connecting the community of hospitality and design professionals,

has awarded over $1 million in total scholarships benefiting students in creative and hospitality fields. The annual event is the primary fundraising vehicle for scholarships. The 2023 gala raised more than $68,000 to benefit student scholarships and propel tomorrow’s hospitality leaders into careers in this dynamic industry. Dallas’ hospitality industry jet setters dazzled in their designer wear and sipped cocktails, danced, and celebrated together under vintage and antique aircraft. NEWH Fundraising Ambassadors Abbe Fenimore, Tyler Duncan, and Jim Looney were recognized for their additional fundraising efforts. The year’s Top Interior Design Firms—LEO A DALY Dallas, Gensler

Dallas, and MatchLine Design Group— received awards as well. Taking the five-star festivities to new heights were the generous sponsors: Smith Brown (diamond sponsor); Crypton with Paravars, Herzog Hospitality, and Fairmont Designs with Wabi Sabi Hospitality (platinum sponsors); Hill & Associates, Furniture Atelier, Outpost Hospitality, Kaiser Hospitality, Akula Living, and Lusive Décor with ArnettWhitacre & Associates (gold sponsors); Daltile (bar sponsor); and Chopin Vodka (drink sponsor). Their support of the industry and current students is sincerely appreciated and paves the runway for the future of hospitality to take flight. Salad Days ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTIANA STEPHENS

Origin Kitchen + Bar’s ahi tuna salad is a healthy pickme-up—and easy to recreate. For years, Park Cities staple Origin Kitchen + Bar has been serving seasonal fare with an emphasis on local, fresh, and healthy ingredients. For instance, the only oil they use while cooking is olive oil; they make all their dressings in-house; they only sweeten dishes with honey, maple, or coconut sugar; and they use pasture-raised, grass-fed meats. One of Origin Chef Alejandro Alarcon’s favorite dishes is the sesame-crusted ahi tuna salad, and it is as delicious as it is pretty. Here, he shares the recipe so you can make it anytime a healthy craving hits.

ingredients: • 3 cups spring mix • 2 oz. golden raisins • 1 oz. goat cheese • 2 oz. Marcona almonds • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes • 1/2 avocado • 1 ahi tuna steak • Sesame seeds • 2 oz. green goddess dressing (16 servings = 1 cup basil leaves, 2 eggs, 3 garlic cloves, 1 tsp. salt, 1/4 cup shallots, 1/2 cup fresh spinach, 1 oz. anchovies, 1/2 cup lime juice, 1/4 cup coconut cream, 2 cups avocado oil)

directions: Step 1. Slice avocado and cherry tomatoes. Step 2. Combine spring mix and green goddess dressing together. Step 3. Coat ahi tuna steak in sesame seeds and sear for 1 minute per side on high heat. Step 4. Slice tuna and top dressed spring mix with all of the ingredients. Enjoy!
