Enjoy, Explore, Experience Following the Dallas Zoo on Instagram (@dallaszoo) is both delightful and somewhat precarious. On one hand, you might hear about the happy arrival of a baby hippo or get to watch reels of tigers munching on leftover Halloween pumpkins. On the other hand, you could find yourself mourning the death of a silverback gorilla or, as I did in January, read the words Code Blue, followed by the announcement that a clouded leopard was missing from her habitat. The disappearance of the leopard was the first in a series of mysterious incidents at the Dallas Zoo this year. Luckily, the leopard was found near her habitat that same day. But then there was the unusual death of an endangered vulture. And then two emperor tamarin monkeys were stolen, which led to an investigation from the Dallas Police Department. This was all in the month of January. Thanks to DPD and a tip from the Dallas Aquarium, the monkeys were located and returned to the zoo within days. (Pin, the vulture, had lived at the zoo for 33 years. His death has not yet been linked to the other incidents.) I followed these stories with close interest—as did others from around the country as the incidents made national news. For me, however, it felt personal. Almost as if my own pet had died or been lost or stolen. For nearly 5 years I’ve been a member of the Dallas Zoo and visited it regularly with one kid, then two kids, and now three! We’ve fed the giraffes and ridden the carousel and tried to explain the difference between a “crane” (bird) and a “crane” (truck) to my discerning toddlers. (“Mom, that’s not a crane!”) It’s a wonderful place to explore again and again—and a reminder of all the wonderful sites and sounds Dallas has to offer. This issue of Park Cities Lifestyle is all about enjoying, exploring, and experiencing this city we call home. Head to the zoo (page 42) or listen to some live music (page 38). Go on a meditative hike (page 34) or plan a trip with the help of a local travel company (page 26). Whatever it is, get out there and explore. In my experience, it’s those “delightful and somewhat precarious” attachments that mean the most.

DESTINATION: HELSINKI, FINLAND Travel is a source of joy and discovery for many people, but planning it can be overwhelming and time-intensive, often leading people to visit the same place again and again. Dallas-based Martha Day observed this irony while working in hospital systems—her colleagues were taking vacations with their families at the same spots because they didn’t have the time or energy to plan something new. Day loved seeing and exploring the world for many years and realized she wanted to bring the same joy to others through travel. She left the hospital world to open her own boutique travel company in 2019, particularly looking to help busy professionals take trips that would leave them feeling refreshed and invigorated. “I can help manage this for these people and give them the opportunity to get away and refocus their vision for themselves, for their families, for their companies,” she realized. To Day, travel is about connecting, which is why she named the business Opal & Finch—opal for the stone of the earth and finch for the bird of the air. “It’s the connectivity between our body and our spirit.” Here are three of Day’s favorite spring and summer destinations for finding that connection. It’s no wonder that the capital city of Finland, deemed the “happiest country in the world” for the fifth consecutive year, is on Day’s list. Helsinki’s natural beauty, art, and architecture could keep travelers occupied for many days, but it’s the love of the sea and the traditional Finnish sauna that set this destination apart for relaxation and retreat. “A great time to visit is from May to July, a month either side

of the summer solstice when you can experience the Nordic white nights with 18-plus hours of sunlight,” she says. With this much daylight, you can make the most of your time in Helsinki and Finland.

STAY

Day suggests staying three nights in Helsinki, combined with four nights in nature-filled Lakeland, two nights in Lapland, and three nights in Tallinn, Estonia. For Helsinki, stay at Hotel Kämp—“old-school-luxurymade-contemporary right of the Esplanade, with great access to the heart of Helsinki.”

“There’s a reason the Finns are the happiest people, and I hold that it is because of their love of a good sauna,” Day says. The traditional Finnish sauna experience is a must, and Day’s favorite public sauna is Löyly, which “sits on the edge of the Baltic Sea and is the perfect place to experience the euphoria that comes after the heat of a sauna followed by a plunge in the sea.”

Although Day doesn’t often give specific restaurant recommendations because of how quickly the experience can change, she says Helsinki’s Grön is a worthy exception. “This cozy restaurant holds a Michelin star, and whether you choose the standard or vegan menu, the 2.5 hours spent eating through its preset menu is time and money well spent.” CONTINUED > AP R I L 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . DESTINATION: SWITZERLAND

“Summertime is about outdoor adventure,” Day says, “and my second favorite place as an outdoor playground is Switzerland. Being outside as much as possible is the only thing that makes sense in this mountain country. Waking to the sunrise on the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger mountains and hearing the sweet soft sound of Swiss cowbells is the perfect way to start a day. Here in the mountains, it’s easy to explore up to the gingerbread village of Grindelwald or hike over to Lauterbrunnen for views that are truly awesome.”

STAY “On my last visit I stayed in Wengen outside of Interlaken in the mountains; this cute town is accessible year-round by the Wengernalp Railway.” Day recommends three nights in the mountains, combined with three nights in Zurich, two nights in St. Moritz, and three nights in Lugano. In Wengen, stay at Arenas Resort Victoria-Lauberhorn; in Interlaken, stay at Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa.

DO Getting around for various activities in Switzerland, like hiking, sightseeing, and boating, is easier with the Swiss Travel Pass. This can be used for trains, buses, and boats; make reservations for the Glacier Express or the William Tell Express and enjoy the country’s vast and picturesque panoramas.

EAT/DRINK The Swiss are known for cheese and chocolate, and for good reason. Be sure to seek out plenty of fondue— Appenzeller cheese especially—and chocolate while you’re there.

If you are feeling out of balance, you can relax knowing that nature isn’t. Nature has a balancing tendency and offers intentionality. That is why we feel at peace in the natural world. The combination of balance and intention is powerful, and when we step into nature, it has an immediate effect on us. In these natural environs, you can reset your compass and find a new direction. It is where you can release the past and stand on new ground. It is where you can gain insights, and find a solution to a problem. It is a place where you can become inspired, feel empowered and start to find yourself again. As an active person, I find sitting meditations difficult. Instead, here are two practices to follow in your explorations outside.

INNER COMPASS RESET To reset or orient your inner compass, stand facing north and focus on the

elements of earth, rocks, or soil. Feel the earth beneath your feet. After a minute, make a quarter turn to the right to face east and focus on the element of air. Breathe it in and feel it on your skin. Now, make another quarter turn to the south with a focus on fire. Imagine the fire within—your passion—or the intensity of the sun and its power. Finally, turn to the west and focus on water and its refreshing and cleansing qualities. This process tunes your senses into nature in a new way by seeing, feeling, smelling, or hearing each of the elements. You’ll find yourself feeling more in tune with nature and more focused on the fluid dynamic that is your life.

WALKING TO RESOLUTION If you have a problem to solve, try this option. As you start walking, your mind will be busy. But after 10 minutes or so, your mind will start to slow down; you’ll

realize you are no longer thinking of worries and concerns. Instead, your attention will be on the trees, plants, animals, and insect life. In this state of mind, you will be more prone to creative thinking with the potential for solutions to play out unconsciously. If you have a problem, say to yourself that you want to find the solution at the end of your hike. Then start on the trail and let the outcome go. The solution may come to you on the hike or it may be realized later—or even better, it may resolve itself seemingly on its own. But guess what? That’s the subconscious mind and nature at work, naturally. Come to the Zoo! WITH MORE THAN 2,000 ANIMALS FROM OVER 400 SPECIES, THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING TO DO AT THIS NORTH TEXAS TREASURE. If it screeches, squeaks, snorts, roars, buzzes, barks, snarls, clucks, coos, howls, chirps, quacks, hisses, hoots or honks, chances are you’ll probably find it living at the Dallas Zoo. Founded in 1888, the Dallas Zoo is a local landmark positioned on 106 lush acres. Easily accessible, it is Texas’ oldest and largest zoological park, located just three miles south of downtown. What are the zoo’s most popular exhibits? “It’s difficult to identify since each guest creates their own zoo experience,” says Kari Streiber, VP of Marketing and Communications. For example: The Wilds of Africa exhibit is popular and includes elephants, giraffes, hippos, gorillas, chimpanzees, and lions. Giants of the Savanna was the first habitat in North America that allowed for elephants to mix with species such as giraffes, zebras, and ostriches—and boasts breathtaking views. In ZooNorth, you’ll find maned wolves along with tigers, otters, and small primates. The indoor Herpetarium offers a dramatic eye-to-eye experience with snakes, lizards, and other reptiles.

The Dallas Zoo also engages with animals in many unique ways—from giraffe and tortoise feedings to the Bird Landing and Forest Aviary for interactive experiences; learning about ambassador animals at the Wild Encounters stage; and watching the Wonders of the Wild wildlife show unfold before your very eyes. And just how much annual funding is required to run the zoo? “The short answer is...a lot,” Streiber says. “We don’t use an exact number. How do you put a value on the time and expertise our zoological, medical, and nutrition teams put in every day?” Hard costs vary from $100 a day to feed African painted dogs to more than $100,000 for medical supplies to manage a collection. In addition, signature children’s programs include Wild Adventure Camps scheduled throughout the year and the DFW area’s only full-day Wild Earth Preschool. There are also Take Action programs, community service trash pickup opportunities, and the ultrapopular Safari Nights summertime concert series. “Our Animal Adventures Outreach features ambassadors and animals working in the community for firsthand experiences,” Streiber says. Backstage Safari on Saturdays is for families to experience special encounters with the most popular animals. “Plus, you can symbolically Adopt-AnAnimal,” Streiber adds, “which is an imaginative treat for birthdays, or a special gift for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.” And the zoo also offers fascinating spring and summer activities as well as exhilarating fall and winter programs such as Zoo Lights. “We recently returned from the monarch wintering grounds in Mexico, for instance,” Streiber says. “And we’ll be adding more to the mix later this year.” And there are more upcoming plans for the zoo as well. The area’s development includes construction of an exciting new Southern Gateway deck park. “We’re moving toward reinvigorating a master plan that we tabled in spring 2020,” Streiber explains. “It lays out new exhibits and changes to the zoo over the next 10 to 15 years.”

Conservation projects and trips, like re-planting trees in Big Thicket Forest, are an ideal way to get involved and make a difference.
