I am this close to buying a mid-century modern record cabinet from a vintage furniture store here in Dallas. That excites me because it fits my somewhat retro interior design style and also gives me the chance to support a local business. That’s what this issue is all about. In fact, that’s what Park Cities Lifestyle is always about—supporting this community. In this, our Local Love issue, we cover several homegrown companies that are making and selling their wares right here in Dallas. In fact, after I secure this record cabinet, I’m making a move for the Halo fireplace screen from Claire Crowe Collection, a metalwork design company featured on page 20. Add to that our favorite museums on page 16, outdoor fire pits from BoomAtomic on page 28, financial advice from Messick Peacock & Associates on page 34, and a delightful cake recipe from beloved bakery Bread Winners on page 50, and you’ve got a great list of places to support in this loved-up month. February is always dominated by the emotions of Valentine’s Day, but this year I’m trying to redirect some of those sentiments toward my community—not only my friends and neighbors, but the local shops and store owners, the postal carriers and teachers, and the businesses and brands based in our very own backyard metropolis. You don’t have to read my interview with Claire Crowe to know that shopping local makes a huge difference to the people who are doing the work right here in Dallas, but I hope you will anyway. It was a reminder to me of why investing in local makers is worth it, and I hope you’ll feel the same.

Keep the Home Fires Burning Since 2010, Claire Crowe Collection has specialized in breathtaking artisan metalwork designs for the hearth and home.

ARTICLE BY EMILY C. LASKOWSKI

The mission at Claire Crowe Collection is “to design with both a modern and timeless sense of creation and strive to use ancient craft techniques in fresh new ways.” At the helm of this craft is Claire Crowe, the founder, creative director, and president of her eponymous brand, who has turned fireplace screens and metalwork into an American-made luxury. Her gorgeous creations span styles from traditional to whimsical—and we asked Crowe all about her work here in Dallas and beyond.

PARK CITIES LIFESTYLE: FIRST, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR MORE THAN A DECADE? THAT’S QUITE A FEAT. Claire Crowe: It feels much more comfortable than in the beginning when everything was new. I’ve built a small but mighty team, and we love being together and what we are doing. I’m actually more relaxed in my business—and my life—than ever and feel grateful for that.

20

M AK E R’S ST U D IO | HOME + DE S I GN

PCL: WHAT WAS YOUR BACKGROUND BEFORE STARTING CLAIRE CROWE COLLECTION? DID YOU ALREADY KNOW ABOUT METALWORK? CC: I grew up watching my mom express herself through a variety of creative mediums: oil painting, ceramics, and enameling, to name a few. I guess that had a real impact on me, though I didn’t realize it until later. I was primarily educated to become a writer, but for me, designing is more stimulating. I love taking inspiration from traditional craft and finding ways to modernize it.

PCL: DO YOU OPERATE PRIMARILY IN THE PARK CITIES AREA, OR DO YOU SERVE CUSTOMERS BEYOND DALLAS? CC: We have a showroom in the Dallas Design District and love being a part of the Dallas design community. We have partnerships in other cities around the country where

out-of-town customers can see our work. I’m proud to say that we have a national presence as a leading supplier of artisan fire screens and metal home accents.

PCL: HOW DOES ONE GO ABOUT ORDERING SOMETHING FROM THE COLLECTION? CC: We have a great showroom with a variety of fire screens and decorative metalwork pieces on display. Everyone is welcome! Customers can either shop directly from the site or call us to walk them through the ordering process. Customers often have questions about how to measure for custom screens or requests for finish samples, which we gladly provide. We work very hard to keep the process friendly and easy. Customers appreciate being able to order fire screens in custom sizes or to even propose a completely custom design. From coastal birds to coral reefs, we’ve done a lot of totally custom projects.

PCL: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE INSTALLATION TO DATE? OR PERHAPS ONE THAT REALLY STANDS OUT AMONG THE REST?

Courtesy Dunbar Road Design

CC: Crescent hired us to design a sculpture for the lobby of a new build in Uptown. We listened to their vision for something that spoke to the building’s Texas roots and designed a nest with three birds. This concept took shape after I pulled old vines out of the woods behind my childhood home in Arkansas and tangled them into a circular shape resembling the beginning of a bird’s nest from an aerial view. I found a few vines that cried out with opportunity, including a handful with whimsical 180-degree turns reproduced in the sculpture. It was important to retain the playful and imprecise nature of the form, something that can be hard to control once the bending and crushing of the metal takes place. Copper took center stage in the sculpture due to its reflective and malleable traits, with hand-textured bronze and forged iron also included in the piece. The blue-green patina [on the] birds kept the mood of the installation contemporary and upbeat and added a pop of color.

PCL: WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT BEING BASED IN DALLAS? CC: I came for college and never left. As we all know, Dallas has so much going for it. I love going back home to Arkansas to visit my family, but I’m always excited to come home to Dallas, my Park Cities neighborhood, and my creative studio downtown.

Our intention is always to build pieces that will be unique, sculptural, and enduring, and that will nod toward traditional craft but have a more contemporary execution.

PCL: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU AND YOUR TEAM WHEN SOMEONE SHOPS LOCALLY FROM YOUR COLLECTION?

will nod toward traditional craft but have a more contemporary execution.

CC: Making pieces with intention and creativity is a big part of what we do. We want the pieces we create to touch the person who lives with them; we want them to have meaning in some significant way, whether in reverence to nature or in appreciation of the American craftspeople who brought them to life. We want our clients to see the human touches involved in the making— something human, perfectly imperfect, and magical. That’s hard to come by at a big box retailer but easy for us since we make each object one at a time and by hand.

PCL: ANY ADVICE FOR HOMEOWNERS LOOKING TO FIND THAT PERFECT PIECE FOR THEIR HOME?

PCL: IN ADDITION TO SUPPORTING A LOCAL BUSINESS, WHAT CAN CUSTOMERS EXPECT WHEN THEY BUY A CLAIRE CROWE PIECE?

CC: I’m most thankful for the people who bring our designs to life. All our pieces are infused with the history and tradition of the hands who have created them. Each piece has the distinction of being crafted by Texas craftsmen. Each piece attests to the expertise of the skilled craftsman who made it. I’m proud of that, and I love working with these creatives and seeing a small piece of their personalities shine through in the objects that we, together, bring to life.

CC: We take inspiration from motifs that elicit delight. It’s often a natural element such as a butterfly or a blossom—forms, things that reflect movement, light, or joy. She can feel confident that we built the object to last. Our intention is always to build pieces that will be unique, sculptural, and enduring, and that

CC: Come by! Handmade things will each have personality—they will differ in ways, so it’s nice for local customers to see them in person. We have a wide range of pieces and can’t display everything on the website, so let us know what you’re looking for, even if it’s just in the idea stage. We work from scratch with customers frequently.

PCL: WHEN YOU THINK BACK ON THE YEARS YOU'VE BEEN IN BUSINESS, SINCE 2010, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR?

“A well-designed, wood-burning fireplace is still as wonderfully effective a focal point for a house as it was in the great architecture of the 1950s and 1960s,” says Green, a native Texan who has always been intrigued by the mid-century aesthetic. “I grew up watching all the classic programs of the era such as The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Love Lucy, Bewitched, and more. It was truly the ‘Atomic Age.’ NASA and the world’s race into space were at their peak. New discoveries were affecting lives with exciting frequency.” Green was hooked. Creativity in architecture, materials and furnishings was also new and scintillating to him. “I discovered Atomic Ranch magazine, and it was love at first sight. I still read every issue and get inspiration.” And Dallas became the perfect place to start and develop BoomAtomic thanks to the impeccable sense of style of its residents. “The mid-century culture is strong here and the desire for top-quality products is, too,” Green says. BoomAtomic fire pits are built by hand in Dallas. Precision is vital, so the metal is laser cut on a million-dollar machine in the Design District. The process not only produces a consistent product but allows for a level of detail that is up to BoomAtomic’s rigid technical standards. “BoomAtomic products are designed and built for the quality of lifestyle that thrives in Park Cities neighborhoods—known for unique artistic forms and lovely homes—which is why we market directly to people in the region,” Green explains. “We also do custom-designed fire pits, wood-burning and natural gas.” Choosing the right type of fire pit design really depends on how frequently it will be used, where it will be positioned, the budget, and the local fire codes that must be observed. All of these requirements demand a company like BoomAtomic with deep roots and expertise. Contact BoomAtomic at (214) 937-9727 or BoomAtomic.com.

NEVER STOP GROWING FINANCIAL SECURITY IN A VOLATILE MARKETPLACE IS ON THE MINDS OF INVESTORS. WHERE DO YOU GO FOR THE BEST ADVICE?

Chris Messick and David Peacock know a thing or two about advising clients for top results. As partners at Messick Peacock & Associates (MPA), they also understand their firm’s philosophy and reasons for success. They started as friends with two separate practices but officially merged to form MPA in 2015. Park Cities Lifestyle spoke to both Messick and Peacock about financial planning, risk tolerance, and helping clients grow in every facet of their lives.

ARTICLE BY DAVE MUSCARI PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRANT MILLER PHOTOGRAPHY

34

EXP E RT H E LP | FIN AN CE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

PARK CITIES LIFESTYLE: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FIRM’S EXPERIENCE? Chris Messick: For over 30 years we’ve seen booms, busts, and everything in between. We’ve worked successfully with individuals and businesses in nearly every industry—and helped thousands.

PCL: HOW DOES MPA DIFFERENTIATE FROM OTHER WEALTH MANAGEMENT FIRMS? Messick: Part of MPA’s uniqueness is that we’re not a sales organization, nor do we have a sales culture. We strive to incorporate smart “life planning” into financial planning.

PCL: KNOWING THAT ONE SIZE DOESN’T FIT ALL, WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO ADVISING CLIENTS ON INVESTMENTS? David Peacock: Some things do fit all—costs, taxes, planning, and having realistic expectations. But every individual is distinctive in terms of risk tolerances and financial backgrounds.

PCL: HOW DO YOU OVERCOME ANY CLIENT RELUCTANCE? Messick: Being hesitant about investing in volatile markets is normal. We help clients better understand the process and options, dig deeper, and look beyond the noise to make smart decisions. We want to help people that connect with our brand of financial planning and core values of optimism, achievement, competence, empathy, and connection.

CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ PA R KC I T I E S

35

PCL: WHEN IT COMES TO 2023, WHAT DO YOU TELL CLIENTS? Messick: Every financial plan should be tested against the impact of higher rates, higher inflation, and lower asset values. We find many clients are pleasantly surprised that their plans still look solid despite the changing economy. Peacock: Market declines have created opportunities to reduce current or future capital gains taxes by realizing losses in assets that can be moved to more attractive positions or by trading into a similar position for a period of time to meet IRS requirements. Lower equity prices allow disciplined investors to rebalance portfolios or add cash at discounted equity prices.

PCL: HOW DO YOU PROTECT CLIENTS AGAINST RISING INFLATION? Messick: Incomes are growing with the cost of goods and services. And while there are some signs of inflation rolling over, for now, demand in the economy remains robust. Consumers are not optimistic, but they are liquid and still willing to spend. We certainly think time will smooth things out as inflation moderates and asset prices recover.

PCL: YOU SUGGEST CLIENTS SHOULD NEVER STOP GROWING? Peacock: Intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and financially—in every area of your life. Messick Peacock & Associates is located at 8333 Douglas Ave., Ste. 1200, Dallas, TX 75225 (972.942.0672).

VA L E N T I N E ’ S VOIL A ! Make Valentine’s Day a family festivity with crafts for the kiddos.

// The Table

Little ones love to be loved, don’t they? This Valentine’s Day, include the whole family in the celebration with this sweet treat table. Keep it simple with a few favorite snacks and candies, or for a more extravagant display, use fresh flowers and create a handmade centerpiece. The best part? It can all be used again.

// The Table

Start by placing large greenery in a circle around the table. Then layer varying types of greenery on top of the first layer in shorter widths to achieve the final look. To finish, add mini cupcakes, chocolate-dipped Oreos, and themed cookies for a wonderfully inviting table of sweet treats.

// The Tree

// The Tree

To create this easy (and eye-catching!) centerpiece, collect fallen branches from outside and paint them white. Use a thrifted, repurposed white ceramic jar to assemble the branches in for the base. Use a floral foam to stabilize the branches, and place moss at the top of the jar. This homemade tree can be used for any occasion— it’s sturdy, and just about anything can be hung on it.

// The Ornaments

// The Ornaments

Create heart ornaments to hang on the Valentine’s tree centerpiece. These ornaments could even be used as clue cards for a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt. (Instruct children to find their picture on the tree and hunt for the hidden treasure in the house.) Use recycled shipping boxes to create the heart base and paint them red. Then use a hole punch to create a lace-like edge to complete the look.

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET

3 WAY S T O O R G A N I Z E A N D

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our three tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

3. UPGRADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
