UNDERSTANDING ESTATE SELLERS

HIRING THE BEST COMPANY FOR YOUR NEXT ESTATE SALE COULD BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BIG SUCCESS OR HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT.

Dallas is well-known for grand estate sales. On any given day in the Part Cities, Preston Hollow and more, events dot the luxury landscape. But the idea that all estate liquidators were created equal is simply a myth. Finding the right company for a sale could be the difference between a rousing success and a bitter disappointment. Enter José Tamayo and Stephen King, co-owners of Dallas Estate Sellers (DES). José has worked successfully in liquidation for years and understands how

factors large and small can dramatically impact estate sales. Meticulously detailed and dedicated to ensuring exceptional results, Stephen’s retail management, design/staging experience, and work as independent antique dealer, brings a special talent for presentation. Working for fashion brands like Perry Ellis, Arizona Jean Company for JC Penney, and Printemps, the celebrated Paris department store, José developed a sterling reputation in design. He brings an

avid passion for interiors, antiques, and collectibles, and experience with several of Dallas’s premier estate sale companies. Beyond their excellent business practices, both men bring a creative eye, critically important in displaying items, plus deep skills in researching, pricing, and selling. “Since the beginning we’ve inspired a sense of trust from our clients,” explains José. “We want them to know all of their belongings are going to be handled with respect.” However, it’s the team’s customer service that sets them apart. “We treat your estate as if it was our own … that’s our mission statement,” says Stephen. DES has handled every size of estate – from 1,000 to 15,000 square feet. They customize every sale to each client’s individualized needs.

The team cleans, organizes, arranges, and displays all items, utilizing available areas, and brings additional equipment necessary to best showcase items for maximizing sales. “We are committed to the highest integrity when conducting sales,” says Stephen. DES will research, assess, and evaluate all items, using current market values, to determine the ideal pricing structure. “If there are pieces outside our areas of expertise, we’ll engage an (independent) appraiser at our expense to ensure maximum proceeds,” says José. The company also understands smart promotion having built a strong social media presence and an email list into the thousands to advertise sales. The team at DES works to sell every item at the highest price feasible while handling details such as security, lighting and staging equipment and also observing all health and safety protocols. They’ve been in business for eight years, and according to Jose, “We’re extremely proud that we’ve gained the respect and acknowledgment of established Dallas estate liquidators that have operated 20-30 years.” “We are respectful, admire them, and consider some of these companies estate sale ‘royalty’. These companies also share the same high standards and expertise aligning with our values. We’re grateful for their recognition and thankful to be considered equals.” “We take the worry out … it’s as easy as signing on the dotted line. We do the rest,” adds Stephen. CONTINUED >

ASPEN AND THE ROARING FORK VALLEY AN IDEAL PLACE FOR A WINTER BREAK ARTICLE BY KENDALL HOULTON

22

M UST SE E | L IFE + CU LTURE

Traveling to Chamonix, France was not feasible last year so my family opted for a ski vacation closer to home in Colorado! Visiting Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley in Colorado can be an ideal way to spend your winter holiday! And yes, you CAN do it ALL during a winter school break! As home to the world’s first world championships held outside of Europe, Aspen is renowned for its incredibly dreamy winter experiences and celebrity sightings. And this year is even more special because Aspen Skiing Co. is celebrating 75 years of skiing, offering guests four world-class mountains to choose from: Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk. These mountains offer a wide variety of terrain perfect for everyone from beginner to expert and this year's celebratory events include Luminescence in Snowmass, Winterskol in Aspen, XGames at Buttermilk and so much more!

RUNWAY TO SLOPESIDE IN MINUTES Aspen is in the Roaring Fork Valley, southeast of Vail, and there are plenty of ways to reach the ski resort. Few mountain resorts have the airport proximity that Aspen Snowmass enjoys. Located just 5 minutes from Buttermilk (and 10 minutes from Snowmass and Aspen Mountain), the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport accommodates flights from major U.S. airports on United, Delta, and American Airlines Other nearby airports include Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE), which is west of Vail and east of Glenwood Springs, while Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) is about 125 miles east. Colorado’s largest airport, Denver International (DEN) is 220 miles east and north of the Aspen ski area so the most direct way of reaching the resort is I-70 west to CO 82 south

through Glenwood Springs. One should expect about a three-and-a-half to four-hour drive. The Epic Mountain Express (formerly known as the Colorado Mountain Express) offers ground transfers from Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, Denver International Airport and Eagle County Regional Airport. Just download the Aspen Snowmass App and you’ll be able to see parking lot status. We love this option! As a group of ten, we opted to stay in an Airbnb home for 2 weeks outside of Carbondale between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. We chose this location as a home base because within 35 minutes we were either on the slopes at Aspen Snowmass or Sunlight Ski Resort, outside Glenwood Springs. With nearly 730 skiable acres and a 2,000 vertical foot drop, Sunlight offers big skiing at an affordable price. And you can enjoy the best après-ski fun at the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. Because of our large group, we rented a Cadillac Escalade but some of us found that riding the local Roaring Fork Transit buses was very convenient when we wanted to get on the slopes earlier than the group. These buses run the entirety of the Roaring Fork Valley and can get you around easily and many (but not all) routes are free. Free routes include all City of Aspen routes and all Aspen to/from Snowmass Village routes. Seniors 65 and older and children 5 and under always ride free. The Village Shuttle within Snowmass Village is also free to ride. RFTA’s real time bus information is available in an easy-to-use mobile app called Transit. CONTINUED >

WHERE TO STAY? When you’re looking for the perfect place to rest your head after a day on the slopes, look no further than Airbnb or VRBO for your accommodations — you’ll find an amazing selection of great places to stay in the Roaring Fork Valley, but our Airbnb called “AspenWood” - located between Aspen & Glenwood Springs - was one of our faves. Located on the banks of the Roaring Fork River, this 4 bdrm/3.5 ba home is a 35 min drive to Aspen/Snowmass Ski Resort and Sunlight Ski Resort in Glenwood Springs. This beautiful river compound was like our own tiny resort without the crowds. With unsurpassed views of the Roaring Fork River, 2 fireplaces in the Great Room including radiant heating, a gourmet kitchen with amenities fit for a professional chef, and an 8-person Sundance Optima hot tub overlooking the river, we wished we could have stayed longer! For planning, you’ll want to check out how easy it is to drive to your accommodation because some rental homes are difficult to reach in the wintertime if your rental car does not have 4-wheel drive. Luckily, our Airbnb was located down a

24

M UST SE E | L IFE + CU LTURE

regularly snow-plowed road and the rental property had “driveway snowmelt” making the home easily accessible during snowstorms. There was also a bus stop 2 minutes away and we could simply hoist our skis onto the exterior bus ski carriers, leaving the driving to someone else! And our Airbnb host offered to drive us if we didn’t feel like walking to the bus stop. We love a SuperHost!

SKI RESORT LIFT TICKETS & RENTAL GEAR The Aspen Snowmass 2021-22 ski season runs from late November through early to mid-April, depending on the mountain. All four of Aspen’s mountains are open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, and one lift ticket gets you on all four mountains — sweet! Be sure to book 7 Days in advance and save between 13- 45% off. In addition to day and multi-day lift tickets, Aspen Snowmass offers a variety of season passes and participates in some of the industry's best multi-destination ski passes including the

Ikon Pass, Mountain Collective Pass, and Colorado Ski Country's Gold Pass. If you need to rent skis or snowboards, Stapleton Ski Shop and Up Snowboard Rentals and Miller Sports is located in the heart of Aspen. Or better yet, reserve your skis/snowboards with Ski Butlers who deliver all your equipment rentals directly to your accommodations. Luckily for us, we discovered Ragged Mountain Sports, an outdoor gear store located in Carbondale that offered a plethora of unused (and used!) gear that residents donate from all over Aspen region. This was a great shop for friendly customer service vibes in the gear-head affluent ski world if you quickly need to grab a thermal base layer or a helmet. Find more information about ski passes at AspenSnowmass.com Airbnb Accommodations: AspenWood House

creative planning for your future ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial d isciplines, i ncluding c omprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm i n America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal

and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an all time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every nineteen days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when

the market hits an all time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept

this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
