She neglected to mention anything about genetics or that the tallest person on either side of the family was 6’3”. Needless to say, I failed at my first effort on Health and Wellness. What I can say from experience as I prepare for my next trip around the sun is that my goals have changed quite a bit over the years. I learned that there is so much more than the metrics of height, weight, strength and speed that go into fitness. I learned that when I was most fit, I was not spiritually or emotionally well at all. In March of last year, the pandemic put a pause on that impact — but not for long. Mustang Cheer had to close its doors for a few months, but because Ruth and the coaches sprang into action and filmed six weeks’ worth of content, they were able to transport cheer instruction and training to athletes at home via a digital library and live Zoom classes. “It forced us to be pretty creative, and I think some of that is here to stay,” Ruth says. “We had people from all over dropping into our Zoom classes. We’ve had people from outside of Dallas who took our classes come for open gyms once we reopened. We were pretty lucky to figure out how to navigate it.” Things may look a little different in the gym now — with masks, temperature checks, and advanced air filtration systems — but Ruth says it’s more important now than ever for Mustang Cheer to provide the same energy and escape that it always has, whether for an all-star team practice, a tumbling class, a mommy-and-me toddler class, a strength and agility training session, or a high school or collegiate tryout course. “Especially in a pandemic, in a time when these kids are sitting a lot and staring at computer screens, to be able to get in here and do the thing they love doing and be with their friends is a huge mental and physical boost,” Ruth says. “It’s critical in a time like this for the kids to not only have physical activity, but to have the mental stimulation too.” Thanks to supportive families and dedicated coaches, Mustang Cheer has actually grown. In August, a wall was knocked down and the space was expanded to more than 12,000 square feet to accommodate demand. Mustang was able to open several new classes and launch a sold-out all-star competitive cheer program 120 athletes strong. In Mustang’s state-of-the-art expansion, its six competitive teams can practice under competition lights and play back their routines on a massive screen again and again
No matter how much Mustang Cheer grows, Ruth wants to stay

EATING HEALTHY IN THE NEW YEAR IS A TREND THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR DECADES. But sometimes after eating endless amounts of turkey, Christmas cookies and other heavy meals, we just crave something a little lighter and full of veggies. It’s not about losing weight or starting the newest diet craze - it’s about feeling good. An incredibly easy option for maximizing nutrients and flavor are bowls. These could not be more simple to throw together and are very accommodating for groups (or a family of picky eaters)! It could be a taco bowl, an asian-inspired stir fry bowl; there are many delicious options. Today, let’s dig into a Mediterranean bowl with a kick! INGREDIENTS FOR THE CHICKEN:
+ 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts + 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin + 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder + 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt + 1 cup mild Harissa sauce (can be found jarred many places) BOWL OPTIONS:
+ Rice, cauliflower rice or quinoa + Chickpeas + Cucumber + Tomatoes + Red Onion

THIS SIMPLE SLOW COOKER RECIPE IS A COLORFUL WAY TO GET HEALTHY INGREDIENTS IN.
+ Pepperoncini + Green Peppers + Olives + Feta + Tzatziki sauce or plain Greek yogurt To start the Harissa chicken, season it with the cumin, garlic powder, pinch of salt, and pepper. Place chicken in a slow cooker, pour the jarred harissa over the chicken, and cover. Cook on HIGH for 2 hours or LOW 4 hours. Alternatively, you could use an Instant Pot, or boil the chicken and then add the Harrisa. When your marinated chicken is done - pull it out and shred. For those that can’t handle spice, simply use seasoned chicken breasts. Then the fun part: building your bowl. Personally, I use a cauliflower rice base, add diced cucumber, tomatoes, and red onion and then top with tzatziki and feta. Pair with some warm pita bread and enjoy!

LIFE MICHELLE LYNNE IS, IN HER OWN WORDS, RUNNING AND GUNNING ALL THE TIME. She has a two-year-old daughter, runs two businesses and still makes time to stick to her daily rituals. But her confidence is what shines through. ““I know God has me where I'm supposed to be right now, because things keep working out,” she says of how she got to where she is today. “God’s timing and rose colored glasses.” Michelle hit the workforce in the restaurant industry and pushed her way to management at a young age. She stumbled into financial industry recruitment and lived in the corporate world for a while before asking, “Ok God, what next?” Finally settling in her third career, Michelle emphasizes the importance of having absolute certainty in yourself. “I had no freaking clue that I would be able but I knew I would figure it out, and I would work my butt off to get there.” ARTICLE KATIE BEVAN

advice “I believe you have to create a routine for yourself at the beginning and end of every day. You can’t always control the middle.”
Her business started in home staging, which was her key focus from 2008-2012. In 2013, the Dallas housing market skyrocketed and staging work dried up because the houses were turning too quickly. She turned to interior designing, which Michelle says she had been doing all along for friends and family. Now, she runs a team of two interior designers that work for her, Debbie Pratt and Megan Fornes, and make up ML Interiors Group. “I’m blessed to have an amazing team,” says Michelle. “They handle a majority of the design work, which has allowed me to step away from the “one million design details” that go into every project and start a new division of my company, Designed for the Creative Mind.” Not one for sticking with the status quo, Michelle saw another opportunity to share her charismatic people skills and business acumen and started a company that teaches other designers how to run their interior design businesses. Her motto is simple: we rise by lifting others. Maybe one of her best pieces of advice is something we could all take heed of in this day and age: collaboration over competition is key in any industry. CityLifestyle.com/ParkCities
