Gotta Whole Lotta Love

Obviously, family, friends and relationships most often come to mind. However, how many of you consider a pet as part of your family?

Do you love your hometown? John Cougar Mellencamp was born in a “Small Town”, Tony Bennett left his heart in San Francisco. Bon Jovi named an entire album after New Jersey, and Lynyrd Skynyrd loves where the skies are blue in “Sweet Home Alabama”; Heck, Andy Griffith based an entire TV show on his hometown in North Carolina!

Sports fans love their teams. They even paint their faces in team colors or paint team letters on their bare chests in freezing temperatures. In New England, one football fan loves his team so much that he is known as the “Tattoo Helmet Guy.” Yes, he actually tattooed his beloved Patriots helmet onto his entire head! For World Series tickets, Chicago Cubs fans waited in person over 3 days just to get tickets.

In specific years, among the most popular baby names were Luke, Leia and even Anakin. Is it a coincidence that “Star Wars”; movies with those characters came out the same year? Millions of Americans love movies, but I guess “Chewbacca” was a bit much for a cute baby boy. On the other hand, many fans of the “Twilight” movie series actually paid to get vampire fang implants. After all, who wouldn’t love that look?

And of course there is the love of music. One of the biggest selling lines of memorabilia is still Elvis. Who has the salt n’ pepper shakers?? In the past year, music fans love George Strait, Taylor Swift, the Rolling Stones and Metallica so much that entire stadiums sold out. For decades, “Deadheads” followed their favorite band by van around the entire nation. And of course, for over 50 years, millions of KISS fans painted their faces in tribute to their favorite band members.

And how about you? What do you love? Do you love a hobby, to travel, a type of clothes, relaxing at home, cooking, reading or maybe even your career? As the legendary Jackie Moon would say, “Everybody Love Everybody!

Okay, I need to wrap this up. After all, I’m hungry and there are things that I love too!

Love is a verb

As a kid growing up, no matter what happened during the day, we always ended the night the same way: “Goodnight, I love you.” Even if we found ourselves talking a little longer after that, we’d always circle back to those words, knowing they were the last thing spoken before we drifted off to sleep.

Now, as a mom, I do similar with my boys every night: “I love you more than anything. You are my best boys, and I’m so proud of you.” It’s become our ritual. And it’s incredibly important to me that those are the last words they hear before they fall asleep.

Expressing love is the greatest gift we can give and receive. There’s something profoundly comforting about knowing you are loved, and I take those words seriously. But love isn’t just a word—it’s an action. It’s not something you say—it’s something you do; something you choose to do. I want my kids to grow up understanding that love is a verb... showing up and caring deeply.

This issue is brimming with stories of love in its many forms. From heartwarming tales, like the bond between a Phoenix Suns player and his incredible wife, to the powerful connection between Mark and April- TV personalities who balance their on-air careers and family life. There’s love in legacy, as a son continues his father’s work after loss—so deeply moving. And then there’s Jenny Mollen Biggs, one of the most authentic and raw writers I’ve had the pleasure of befriending. She pens a heartfelt letter to her dad, Dr. Art Mollen, as he turns 80. (You MUST read Jenny's books—you’ll find yourself laughing and crying at the same time.)

I’m grateful for the love in my life, and I hope this month you take a moment to embrace the many forms of love in yours: the love in our community, in friendships, in family—and, most importantly, the love within your own family unit.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, let’s remember that every day is a celebration of the love we have in our lives- in any form. Instead of putting pressure on ourselves to dedicate one day to love, let’s make it a goal to welcome love wholeheartedly, to give it with vulnerability, and to honor the connections that make life truly meaningful. Sending love your way, whether you need it, want it, or could simply use it.

AIN’T NO SUNSHINE WHEN SHE’S GONE... LIFE OFF THE AIR WITH SPORTS ANCHOR MARK MCCLUNE AND WEATHER QUEEN APRIL WARNECKE

Drop

Mark McClune, Arizona Family’s sports anchor and host of 3TV’s “The Extra Point,” is a fixture in the world of sports, rubbing shoulders with Arizona’s biggest stars.

Meanwhile, April Warnecke is the Valley’s beloved weather queen of Good Morning Arizona She’s AZ’s go-to for everything from sunny skies to stormy forecasts.

Married for 18 years, this Arcadia TV duo juggles careers, two sons, and daily on-air magic with grace and humor. In our chat, Mark and April share life on and off camera.

MARK, YOU ROLL WITH ARIZONA’S BIGGEST ATHLETES. WHAT’S THAT LIKE?

Mark: It’s a crazy, surreal ride. Every day is different, and I love being at the heart of Arizona’s sports world. Whether I’m interviewing athletes or catching a game-winning shot with the Suns, the excitement is contagious. Being part of the Suns and Cardinals pre- and post-game shows gives me the chance to really dive into the action.

April: It’s wild. Mark comes home after talking to some of the most famous athletes on the planet, and I’m just waking up getting ready to start my job.

CONTINUED >

APRIL, HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORKING EARLY MORNINGS WITH MARK’S UNPREDICTABLE SPORTS SCHEDULE?

April: It’s a juggling act, but we’ve gotten the hang of it. My day starts at 3:30 a.m., and then I’m on-air from 6 to 10 a.m. While I’m out predicting the next storm, Mark’s getting ready for whatever big sports story he’s covering. It’s kind of like we’re living in different time zones.

Mark: When we do cross paths, it’s usually a quick hello and catching up over lunch if we’re lucky. The small moments make it work.

DID SPARKS FLY WHEN YOU MET IN MEDFORD, OREGON STARTING YOUR TV CAREERS?

April: Not exactly. When I saw Mark’s bio, it said, “intramural chair for his fraternity,” and I thought, “Hard pass on the frat guy.”

Mark: Ouch!

April: But he was always planning fun outings and was hard to ignore.

Mark: And she had an adorable dog, Merton. I couldn’t resist.

April: Yeah, Merton was the real draw, but Mark’s spontaneity sealed the deal.

Mark: I knew I had to win her over, so karaoke, dancing, and mechanical bull riding became my strategy. Being from Texas, I felt obligated to flaunt my mechanical bull riding skills, even though I grew up on a cul-de-sac.

MARK, WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO KARAOKE SONG?

Mark: “Living on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi.

April: It’s like he’s trying to win “American Idol” every time.

WITH TWO KIDS IN THE MIX, HOW DO MANAGE IT ALL?

April: It’s a constant balancing act. The kids do everything from baseball to basketball, and Mark’s off covering all sorts of sports. It’s a lot of carpooling, organizing, and making sure everything gets done.

Mark: I’m there for the big moments. We’ve got a good system.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO UNWIND?

Mark: We keep it simple. A quick walk around the neighborhood or grabbing dinner at a local spot.

April: And if there’s margaritas and queso involved, even better.

WHO’S MORE COMPETITIVE?

April: Me, no question. Whether it’s a board game or a friendly bet, I’m all in.

Mark: She gets so into it! She’s always acting like it’s the Super Bowl. April should really coach one of the local professional teams.

IF YOU HAD TO PICK A TV SHOW TO BINGE TOGETHER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

April: Yellowstone, but only if we can dial down the violence.

Mark: Agree. If I wasn’t a sports broadcaster, I’d want to be a cowboy.

WHAT VALUES ARE YOU TRYING TO INSTILL IN YOUR BOYS?

April: Faith, resilience, kindness, and a strong work ethic. Life isn’t always fair, but how you handle setbacks defines you.

Mark: Gratitude and humility. I tell them to appreciate every opportunity and to stay grounded, no matter their successes.

HOW HAVE YOUR INDIVIDUAL STRENGTHS HELPED YOU NAVIGATE LIFE TOGETHER?

April: Mark’s extroverted, spontaneous nature balances my introverted, detail-oriented approach. He pushes me to have fun, and I help him stay organized.

Mark: We complement each other perfectly. April’s planning skills keep us on track, and I think my adaptability helps us handle life’s curveballs.

CONTINUED >

MARK, WHO’S YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE SPORTS PLAYER?

Mark: There are so many great athletes here. ASU legend Danny White, who was the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys when I was a kid. It’s also cool to have fellow Longhorn Kevin Durant here... he’s an all-time great.

WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WISH YOU COULD DO BETTER?

Mark: I’d love to be better at cooking. April’s a great cook, and I’m just the one who shows up hungry. But I’m good at doing dishes.

WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST ON-AIR BLOOPER YOU’VE SEEN EACH OTHER HAVE?

April: Mark once unexpectedly made out with the Phillies mascot live on the D-backs pregame show.  He really needs to stop trying to interview mascots.

Mark: On April’s first day on-air, Brad Perry made her dance during her intro. Live TV, no warning—she handled it like a pro!

MARK, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE APRIL AS A TYPE OF WEATHER?

Mark: Thunder snow—rare, exciting, and one in a million.

Work Spouses: Co-Anchored, Not Married

FROM ON-AIR TO OFF-SCRIPT: BRAD PERRY AND TERESA STRASSER’S WORK MARRIAGE

Sometimes, the best partnerships aren’t romantic—they’re all business! Brad Perry and Teresa Strasser weren’t paired by Cupid, but by TV producers. Together, they bring laughs and energy to Arizona Daily Mix . For our Local Love issue, we asked this dynamic duo about the secret to making a morning show partnership work.

Q: What are your tips for sharing an office?

Teresa: Brad let’s me take control of our morning playlist, and I’m sure he’d be happy if he never heard another Taylor Swift song as long as he lives! His willingness to hear every era of Tay goes a long way. That’s why I won’t have to write a breakup song about him in the style of Taylor.

Brad: When Teresa first joined the show, I got her a brandnew mug to fuel her coffee mug obsession—it’s basically her love language. I also got her a little speaker, just in case she ever needs to drown out the sound of me talking to myself in the mornings. That’s how I warm up my voice, but hey, I figured I’d give her the option to NOT listen to my early-morning ramblings. Thoughtful, right?

“I send Teresa texts from our shared nail salon (that’s right, I’m not ashamed to admit I like a good pedicure).” -Brad Perry

Q: Are you friends outside the morning show?

Brad: I send texts from our shared nail salon (that’s right, I’m not ashamed to admit I like a pedicure from time to time). And if I find a funny video about baseball moms, I always send it.

Teresa: Honestly, Brad has a supernatural ability to find the funniest videos and memes, like the ones that feel like they were made specifically for me. It’s actually one of his superpowers.

Q: What is the most important thing about a work partnership?

Teresa: That’s easy. Always share snacks.

Brad: Unless it’s a day we are doing a fast together, in which case, always fast on the same day!

Teresa: Not to be cheesy, but a work partnership isn’t that different from any other. You try to give each other space, let everyone have their own quirks, and be there for each other. If we trust each other, the audience can sense it, and hopefully, it makes for a more entertaining hour with us each weekday morning. Doing live television together involves trust, and that’s the basis of all great partnerships, right?

Arcadia-based Teresa Strasser is an Emmy-winning writer, best-selling author, and media personality known for her humor and heartfelt storytelling. Formerly a co-host on The Adam Carolla Show, her latest book, Making It Home: Life Lessons from a Season of Little League, earned high praise from baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr.

Brad Perry is a seasoned TV personality and community advocate known for his engaging presence and relatable charm. With decades of broadcasting experience, he’s celebrated for his ability to connect with people and deliver stories that resonate with viewers.

Winter in Paradise Valley

It’s time to elevate the season with unforgettable experiences. Swing away on The Short Course for fun and stunning views, then indulge in the Tee Party menu at Rusty’s. Savor the culinary delights of Hearth ’61 for brunch or dinner, then retreat to your own private oasis. You’ll leave feeling better than ever.

Happy 2025, everyone!

Now that it’s officially too late to say that, we can start looking forward to the next major holiday - Valentine’s Day While I’m all about flowers, cards and chocolate hearts, it may surprise you to find out that my favorite part of Valentine’s Day is the love As cheesy as it might sound, I think Valentine’s Day is a great time to stop and reflect on all the people and things that we love, that we too often take for granted

One of the things I like to reflect on is my love for my career I am truly humbled each and every day that I get to practice law because it’s something that I’m truly passionate about Believe me, I didn’t go to law school for fun, but it was fun because it got me closer to doing what I really love to do Each and every day, I wake up and get to pour myself into my work in a meaningful way I’ve had plenty of jobs, but law is my career

I love getting the chance to work with people in a way that has a direct and immediate impact on their lives On that note, I also love the people I work with Criminal defense is all about getting to know people and getting to know their story, then helping them write an ending they deserve There’s really nothing sweeter than getting justice for those who deserve it most, especially in an age where so many people believe that you ’ re guilty until proven innocent instead of the other way around

If you don’t love where you are, legally-speaking, let Palestini Law be your Valentine this year I’m ready and willing to take your case, and there’s no limit to the love I’ll put into your defense While I can’t promise I’ll send flowers or candy, I can promise you something sweeter: the legal representation you deserve

Jenny Mollen-Biggs Roasts and Toasts her Dad’s Milestone B-Day

Dad, when I was asked to write a letter commemorating your 80th birthday, I hesitated. As I was planning to save my best material for when you were dead. I’ve thought about your death often, the mandate for all attendees to come wearing running gear, the logistics of having to fit all of your grieving ex-girlfriends into one designated corner, and the agony of having to find a mourning dress cuter than my sister’s. I think about this day often, not because I wish for your demise, but because I’m uncertain about my identity without you. As the legendary prophet Stevie Nicks once wrote, “I built my life around you.”

In 1970, as an unassuming young (read: extremely hot!!!!) doctor, you came to Arizona in search of success.

You founded the Phoenix 10K, you infiltrated morning TVs, you proselytized about wellness in the papers, and your eponymous flu program vaccinated over half the Southwest, which ironically is almost as many women as you dated.

But that is only who you are on paper. Patients are aware of your sensitivity and caring nature, but strangers may only recognize you as the person who cut them off in a Ferrari with the license plate “I Run.”

Your profound talent has always been your ability to motivate and push people to reach their full potential. Sometimes, your desire for them surpasses even their own. You are not just a physician; you are a hype man. And instead of selling shoes to put yourself through medical school, you really should have been a DJ on the bar mitzvah circuit.

From a Thanksgiving buffet at an all-inclusive resort to a high school production of Hello Dolly, you can make anything sound like it is the greatest, most exciting thing to ever happen. You’ve instilled me with this confidence my entire life, which, to my husband’s dismay, has made me an absolute nightmare to live with. Because you convinced me that it would be insane for anyone not to love me, I always assumed that everyone was in love with me. Are they not? Actually, don’t tell me.

With the Valley’s Esteemed Dr. Mollen turning 80, we asked his darling daughter to pen him a birthday ode

From jumping off a podium at the Phoenix 10k to resuscitating a collapsed runner fifty yards from the finish line to spending forty-five minutes resuscitating a man in cardiac arrest on a flight from Phoenix to New York, I’ve seen you in superhero mode more times than I can count.

I’ve watched you diligently work toward every accomplishment, never once losing focus or taking a break. Your discipline, drive, and obsessive, unmedicated neurosis have inspired my own need to constantly strive for excellence.

While you have set the bar unrealistically high, you never made me feel ashamed to fail. In fact, you taught me that I needed hardships to grow and that tenacity will always trump natural talent.

As a father, I never heard you cuss or yell. You always maintained your cool, even when I got arrested for a curfew violation at fourteen. You were even able to laugh when, at sixteen, I mistakenly left my car abandoned on the side of the road because I thought it was broken, but in reality, it simply needed gas.

You funded my college education and even my apartment for years longer than I care to admit. If you were to teach a college class on a subject other than medicine or entrepreneurship, might I suggest the delicate art of financially supporting a child while simultaneously making them feel riddled with guilt about accepting your money. Currently, my kids seem far too comfortable spending my cash, and I am in desperate need of whatever Pythagorean theorem might course-correct this issue.

Of all the people I’ve written about (against their will), you are by far my most challenging subject. Perhaps I’m unable to distance myself enough to confidently capture your full essence. Or perhaps I don’t feel comfortable with how vulnerable talking about you makes me feel.

You are my father, the man who taught me what to expect from all other men and the template that guides me as I raise my two sons.

A BETTER CONSTRUCTION EXPERIENCE

DESIGN + BUILD + ENJOY

Your legacy, rich with value, endures far beyond your material achievements, accolades, or rock-hard abs. Ultimately, it is the strength of your character and the depth of your love that define you in my eyes and leaves an indelible impression. Happy birthday. And I’m really glad you aren’t dead yet.

Love, Jenny

EXOSOMES: The Perfect Boost for Radiant Skin and Healthy Hair

If you’re looking to elevate your microneedling results, exosomes are the game-changing addition you’ve been waiting for. These powerful, microscopic messengers are revolutionizing aesthetic care by enhancing the rejuvenating effects of microneedling, providing unparalleled results for skin and hair.

What Are Exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny signaling particles released by stem cells. They carry essential instructions and building blocks to other cells, helping to repair, hydrate, and rejuvenate. Unlike stem cells, exosomes don’t replicate; instead, they deliver what your skin and hair need to thrive.

Why Pair Exosomes with Microneedling?

Microneedling creates tiny microchannels in the skin, stimulating collagen production and allowing deeper penetration of topical treatments. When combined with exosomes, microneedling delivers these powerful messengers directly to the targeted areas, maximizing their benefits.

• Enhanced Repair: Exosomes work in tandem with microneedling to speed up healing and reduce downtime.

• Boosted Results: They amplify collagen and elastin production for smoother, firmer skin.

• Intense Hydration: Exosomes replenish lost moisture, leaving your skin plump and dewy.

Skin and Hair Rejuvenation Like Never Before

For Skin: Exosomes soothe post-treatment redness, form a protective barrier, and deliver hydration for radiant, youthful skin.

For Hair: Applied to the scalp, exosomes enhance microneedling’s ability to stimulate growth and nourish hair follicles, transforming thinning hair into a fuller, healthier look.

Why Choose CraftMD?

At CraftMD Aesthetics/Wellness, we prioritize safety and quality. Our exosome products come from FDA-registered tissue banks and meet the rigorous standards of the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB). Each batch is tested by independent, CLIA-certified laboratories to ensure maximum safety and efficacy.

Ready to Transform?

By combining microneedling with exosome therapy, you can unlock the ultimate rejuvenation for your skin and hair. Let CraftMD help you look and feel your absolute best with this cutting-edge treatment.

Dr. Randy Craft is a double board-certified and Harvard-trained plastic surgeon. He is the founder of CraftMD Aesthetics/Wellness, specializing in cosmetic procedures. HOOPS,

HUMOR, AND HEART: SYDEL CURRY-LEE ON LIFE WITH DAMION LEE

He’s a Phoenix Suns standout; she’s a proud mom, mental health advocate, and co-founder of Domaine Curry Wine. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Sydel Curry-Lee, with her warmth, wit, and authenticity, gave us an exclusive glimpse into life with her NBA husband, Damion Lee.

From their love story to juggling careers and family, Sydel even dished on which of them would thrive most if they swapped jobs for the day. Spoiler: those Curry genes come with a killer jump-shot.

WHO MADE THE FIRST MOVE, AND HOW DID IT GO?

Damion made the first move. We were mutual friends for years, but come summer of 2016, I was finally single. He knew I spent most of my summers in the Bay Area visiting family and that was where he was doing pre-draft workouts. He asked me if I wanted to show him around the Bay while we were both out there, and after 4 dates in 5 days, I was sold.

A PHOENIX SUNS LOVE STORY FROM COURTSHIP TO COURTSIDE

WHAT’S THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING YOU’VE EVER ARGUED ABOUT?

Oh, my goodness… we’ve been married 6 years and together for 8 so we surely have a long list of silly arguments.

WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO KEEPING THE SPARK ALIVE?

We try to make sure to set time for each other. We are incredibly blessed to have a village of support and help with our kids, so if we need a night out, staycation or even a trip away, we are intentional about planning them knowing our kids are in good hands. We also just laugh A LOT. In fact, that’s what attracted me to Damion the most when we first met… how funny he is. Even when days are long or are in rough patches, we both try to remember to be soft with each other, let out guards down, and laugh it out.

SPEAKING OF LAUGHTER BEING THE BEST MEDICINE, WHAT DOES DAMION DO TO GET YOUR GIGGLES GOING?

We have the same sense of humor. We can both make a joke out of pretty much anything and have a ton of inside jokes.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM YOUR WEDDING DAY?

Omg, our wedding was incredible… 10/10. My favorite memory was probably when I walked down the aisle… I was surrounded by my dad, my pastor, and Damion. I looked down and saw that Damion had custom shoes made with our dogs’ faces on them, since they couldn’t be there for the day, and I looked up and saw all three men in tears. Something about seeing outwardly emotional men just softens my heart and that was such a special moment for me.

“SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR PARTNER ASKING YOUR OPINION ON EVERYTHING- BIG OR LITTLE- SHOWS ME JUST HOW MUCH HE VALUES MY INPUT, AND I THINK THAT’S SO SPECIAL.”

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP IN A SONG, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Fantasia’s, “When I See You.”

HOW DO YOU HANDLE DISAGREEMENTS OR TOUGH MOMENTS IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

Therapy, therapy, therapy. I think it’s silly to think we as humans must carry the weight of living life, having a marriage, raising children, working, etc. and do it all successfully and without help.

WHAT’S DAMION’S MOST ENDEARING OR SURPRISING HABIT?

Damion is always considering of my opinion or thoughts. That is one thing I never realized I wanted in a partner until I was in a relationship. Something about your partner asking your opinion on everything- big or little- shows me just how much he values my input, and I think that’s so special.

WHAT’S ONE THING YOU’VE LEARNED FROM DAMION THAT HAS CHANGED YOUR LIFE FOR THE BETTER?

It will all be okay. Damion is very even keelrealistic but calm. He is the peace that I need when I get overwhelmed or just out of my head. I’ve learned the power of creating your own kind of peace from him.

WHAT IS YOUR KEY TO BUILDING A LOVE THAT LASTS A LIFETIME?

Having a solid base and being together for the right reasons.

WHAT’S THE MOST ROMANTIC THING DAMION HAS EVER DONE FOR YOU?

Bought me a Kelly Hermes Bag in Paris… equally, sent me Taco Bell to the house when I was pregnant and crying.

WHAT’S YOUR JOINED GO-TO GUILTY PLEASURE TV SHOW YOU BOTH PRETEND NOT TO LOVE?

Love Island UK.

WHO’S MORE LIKELY TO WIN A COUPLE’S GAME NIGHT?

I don’t know, we are both super competitive… but probably Damion if I had to pick.

IF YOU HAD TO COOK A MEAL TOGETHER, WHO’S THE CHEF AND SOUS-CHEF (OR DISHWASHER)?

Sydel- Chef and Sous Chef. Damion- Dishwasher

WHO WOULD SURVIVE LONGER ON A DESERTED ISLAND, AND WHY?

Probably Damion. He’s a simple guy and doesn’t need much!

WHO’S MORE LIKELY TO RANDOMLY START SINGING IN THE CAR?

Damion for sure.

IF YOU WERE TO SWAP JOBS FOR A DAY, WHO WOULD HANDLE IT BETTER?

Me10,000%. I’m a Curry after all… I’ve got a jump-shot on me.

Anthony Robles: From ASU Wrestling Mat to Amazon Screen

Anthony Robles is no stranger to breaking barriers. Born with one leg, he defied the odds to become an NCAA wrestling champion at Arizona State University, claiming a national title in 2011. Growing up in Arizona, Anthony faced challenges that could have held him back, but instead, they fueled his drive. Through unwavering perseverance and self-belief, he became a three-time All-American and a symbol of resilience.

His remarkable journey has now been captured in the Amazon film Unstoppable, starring Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight, When They See Us) alongside Jennifer Lopez, Don Cheadle, and Michael Peña. The film chronicles Anthony’s rise from adversity to NCAA champion.

In this exclusive Q&A, Anthony reflects on his time at ASU, the making of the film, and the powerful message he hopes will inspire millions.

WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU LEARNED YOUR STORY WOULD BE A MOVIE?

I was in shock and humbled. The idea of seeing my life portrayed on screen felt surreal. I thought, “Is this really happening?” It’s an honor, but also a responsibility to share the story in a way that inspires others.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE SEEING YOUR LIFE PORTRAYED ON SCREEN?

Watching it was deeply emotional. One scene that stands out is when my coach brings letters from third and fourth-grade students who shared how I inspired them. The filmmakers captured that moment so well... it took me right back to the feelings of gratitude and pride I had back then.

DID YOU HAVE INPUT DURING THE FILMMAKING PROCESS?

Yes, I was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be involved. The filmmakers wanted the story to be as accurate as possible, so they consulted with my mom and me on everything. Their commitment to authenticity made the process even more special.

HOW DID IT FEEL TO MEET JHARREL JEROME, THE ACTOR PLAYING YOU?

Meeting Jharrel was surreal. He’s incredibly talented and brought so much heart and dedication to the role. Watching him portray my journey was humbling—he made it feel real and raw in a way I never imagined.

WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HOPE VIEWERS TAKE AWAY FROM THE MOVIE?

I want people to know that no matter what challenges they face, they can overcome them. Be unstoppable. Stay focused, keep trying, and never give up. As I always say, “The word ‘impossible’ is found only in the dictionary of fools.”

SCAN ME!

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH THREE PEOPLE, LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD THEY BE?

I would love to have dinner with Martin Luther King Jr., Jimmy Valvano, and Cael Sanderson. Each of them represents excellence and perseverance in their own unique ways. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision and strength inspire me, Jimmy Valvano’s fight against adversity is legendary, and Cael Sanderson is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time—someone I’ve always admired.

HOW DID YOUR TIME AT ASU SHAPE YOU AS AN ATHLETE AND A PERSON?

ASU was the foundation of my success. It taught me resilience, discipline, and how to perform under pressure. My coach, Brian Stith, was a huge influence—always pushing me, teaching me, and believing in me. The lessons

I learned at ASU go far beyond wrestling and continue to guide me in life.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM YOUR TIME AT ASU?

Winning the NCAA championship is something I’ll never forget. It was a goal I had since ninth grade—I wrote it on a sticky note and carried it with me every day. The journey wasn’t easy, but achieving that dream was worth every challenge.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

I’ll continue motivational speaking and coaching wrestling. My agent has hinted at the possibility of a TV program, so we’ll see where that goes. Right now, I’m focused on sharing my story and helping others realize their potential.

CONTINUING DAD’S PATH

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON: LOVE, LOSS, AND A LASTING LEGACY

When Ryan Bertenshaw speaks about his father, Patrick Bertenshaw, it’s not just with fondness, but with a deep reverence that underscores the magnitude of the man he was.

“Losing my father was the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through,” says Ryan.

Patrick’s sudden and tragic passing at the age of 53 left a void not only in Ryan’s life, but in the lives of countless others who were touched by his warmth and wisdom.

Pat’s Pickup Project in honor of Ryan’s Late Father

“His legacy is one I’m extremely proud to be a part of and something I look to build on. Above all his accolades, both personally and professionally, I think his smile, contagious personality, and sense of humor are what we will remember most.”

Patrick’s philosophy on life resonates deeply with Ryan.

“My father believed in the idea that the more you put into something, the more you’re going to get out of it,” Ryan shares.

“This applies to almost every aspect of life, whether it’s studying for mid-terms, navigating the ups and downs of marriage, or preparing for a C-Suite presentation. He was passionate about meeting new people, forming lasting relationships, and making a positive difference in our community.”

That passion left a lasting impression on those who knew Patrick.

Ryan recalls a quote from one of his father’s colleagues: “If you were lucky, you had the opportunity to know and work with Patrick Bertenshaw. His work with the Arizona Foundation for Women led to deepening relationships in the Phoenix corporate world. Pat was a leader in the community and an advocate for anyone who needed it.”

Ryan recalls many personal moments that defined his relationship with his father.

“I think about the simple things,” he says. “Playing catch in the yard, driving home from soccer games, or Saturday golf outings. My dad was my biggest supporter and always had a way of making me feel like I was his top priority.”

Ryan remembers one particularly poignant moment when they attended the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris.

“Although the U.S. team came up empty-handed, having attended the event and spending the following week in Paris is something I’ll never forget. It was just the two of us, exploring the city and watching the best golfers in the world. It felt like such a privilege to share that time with him.”

“Take time to show loved ones they matter—you never know if it’s your last chance.”

Today, Ryan continues his father’s legacy in the financial industry with a focus that is both deeply personal and profoundly impactful.

“When my father passed, my mother became one of the women he had dedicated his career to helping—suddenly single and navigating financial responsibilities on her own,” Ryan explains. “It’s a mission that’s now even closer to my heart because I’ve seen firsthand how important it is.”

Ryan works tirelessly to empower women like his mother, guiding them through financial uncertainty and helping them regain confidence.

“I’m honored to continue my dad’s focus on empowering women to gain financial independence,” Ryan says. “Seeing people rebuild their lives after loss and achieve financial stability is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.”

Patrick’s influence on Ryan extended far beyond these special occasions.

“I’d like to think he instilled in me a work ethic, mental fortitude, and personality that I hope will take me far. He was the parent staying late, helping other kids work on their swing. He was the professional who, after a disappointing result, helped you understand the mistake you made and guided you to ensure it wouldn’t happen again. He led by example, walking the walk when it came to leadership.”

Losing his father was a deeply transformative experience, reshaping Ryan’s understanding of the enduring strength and value of family.

“Family is the single most important thing we have in our lives,” he says. “One of my biggest regrets in life, and something that keeps me up each night, is not telling my father enough how much I truly loved him. I wish I had spent more time thanking him for the little things—playing catch, going to a Suns game, golfing. Those are the moments I miss most and value now more than anything.”

Patrick believed in the idea that the more you put into something, the more you’re going to get out of it. His commitment to the Arizona Foundation for Women and other local initiatives reflected his dedication to making a difference.

“He found real value in educating folks on personal financial wellness. It’s something that shaped not just his career, but his relationships in the community.”

Patrick’s professional accomplishments further cemented his legacy.

“He worked with women who were suddenly single, helping them gain financial confidence. He had a knack for making people feel comfortable, no matter their situation.”

Patrick’s alma mater, Brophy College Preparatory, also played a significant role in shaping his life.

“To have seen both his sons and his daughter attend Brophy and Xavier is something I think he was extremely proud of,” Ryan adds. “His Brophy connection stayed with him for life.”

Most recently in 2024, Ryan and his family honored Patrick’s memory in a unique way by adopting a stretch of 36th Street in Phoenix.

“We call it ‘Pat’s Pickup Project,’” Ryan explains. “It’s an annual event where friends, family, and the local community come together to clean up our city while celebrating my father’s life. Each time someone drives down that stretch of road, I hope they think of my father and do something good for someone else.”

Ryan’s message for those who hear about the project is simple yet powerful.

“Life is fragile,” he says. “Take the time to show those closest to you how important they are. Whether it’s a text or dinner, let them know. You never know when it will be your last chance.”

For Ryan, carrying on his father’s legacy is both a responsibility and an honor.

“I’m continuing his focus on empowering women to gain financial independence always with a positive mindset—something my father would be extremely proud of.”

Arcadia’s Gio Santora: Life at 165 MPH and Climbing

A TEEN’S JOURNEY BLENDING SPEED, SKILL, AND DETERMINATION TO CHASE HIS DREAMS

For most 14-year-olds, life revolves around school, sports, and friends. But for Arcadia High School student Giovanni Santora, life happens in the fast lane—literally. Racing cars at 165 mph, training on world-class tracks, and competing against some of the best drivers in the world, Gio isn’t just dreaming of a racing career; he’s living it.

From a young age, Gio’s passion for motorsports was undeniable. Starting with karting in Glendale, he quickly made a name for himself, representing Team USA at the World Finals in Bahrain. But his breakout moment came last summer when he won the FEED Racing Shootout in British Columbia, Canada. The victory earned him a one-week scholarship to the prestigious F4 FEED Racing Academy at Magny Cours Circuit in France, marking a major leap in his journey.

“When I first sat in the F4 car, I couldn’t believe it,” Gio recalls. “It felt unreal—knowing I’d be going over 160 mph on a track like Magny Cours. It was the biggest challenge I’d ever faced, but also the most exciting.”

As the youngest participant at the academy, Gio competed against 32 of Europe’s top drivers in his first experience driving an F4 car, complete with a clutch and paddle shifters.

“The car was a beast. It was so powerful, but once I got the hang of it, I realized it was just me and the track. That’s when I felt like I belonged.”

Though he didn’t advance to the semifinals, Gio performed exceptionally well, earning the respect of his coaches and peers.

“Every lap taught me something new,” he says. “It’s not just about speed—it’s about precision, focus, and understanding the car. I left Magny Cours feeling like a different driver.”

For Gio, racing is more than a sport; it’s a way of life.

“I love the adrenaline, the speed, and the challenge. But what I really love is the team aspect. Racing isn’t just about the driver. It’s about everyone—your mechanics, your coaches, your family. It takes a team to win.”

That sense of teamwork has shaped Gio beyond the track.

“Racing has made me more confident and social,” he explains. “When I first started, I was shy. But now, I’ve learned how to work with people, communicate, and push myself and my team to do better.”

Balancing life as a teen and an aspiring professional racer isn’t easy, but Gio is up for the challenge. Between rigorous fitness routines, track sessions, and studying engineering, he’s preparing for the demands of the sport.

“Fitness is huge in racing. I run a lot, play pickleball with my dad to work on hand-eye coordination, and even wear a weighted helmet to strengthen my neck muscles.”

However, Gio still embraces that inner 14-year-old kid.

“I ride my bike to school, hang out with friends, and listen to music. It’s important to find balance,” he says.

Looking ahead, Gio has ambitious goals.

“By 2026, I want to race in the European and UK series. I’d be the youngest driver to ever do it, which is exciting. But I also want to do well in school and make friends wherever racing takes me.”

And his dad, George, has been his biggest supporter every step of the way.

“From karting to F4, it’s been incredible to watch him grow—not just as a driver but as a person,” George says. “He’s worked so hard for every opportunity, and I know he’s only just getting started.”

As Gio gears up for the GT4 series, which will involve three-hour endurance races in Europe and UK, he’s ready for the challenge.

“The next six months will be about testing, training, and getting everything in place,” he says. “It’s a lot of work, but I’m excited to prove myself on the track.”

For Arcadia’s own racing star, the journey is just beginning. With his unwavering dedication, incredible talent, and passion for the sport, Gio is racing toward a future as bright as the headlights on his race car.

“Racing isn’t just a sport to me,” Gio says. “It’s my passion, my lifestyle, and my dream. I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.”

As he navigates the twists and turns of the racing world, one thing is certain: Gio Santora is a name to watch—and he’s speeding toward greatness.

1. Emotions Drive Decisions

It's natural to feel anger, sadness, or frustration during challenging times, but making rash choices can lead to losing valuable assets or arrangements that don't serve your or your children's best interests in the long run.

2. Overlooking Long-Term Financial Implications

Agreeing to financial terms without considering their future impact, or seeking professional advice, can result in unforeseen challenges and financial strain down the road.

3. Neglecting Children's Best Interests

These situations are especially hard on children, and their wellbeing should always be a priority. Focus on providing consistency, decisions should always reflect what's best for them.

4. Avoiding Settlement

Mediation can save time, reduce costs, and minimize stress while giving both parties more control over the outcome. Exploring settlement options often leads to more favorable and mutually agreeable solutions than letting a court decide your future.

A Sisterly Kind of Love

From Mentor to Friend: A Beauty Queen and Teen’s Inspiring Bond

In Scottsdale, an unexpected bond formed through Big Brothers Big Sisters has changed two lives. Amy Walters, a former Mrs. Arizona America, and Liana Rivera, a reserved Valley teen, came together as mentor and mentee— and discovered a friendship that transformed them both.

“I thought it was weird to have someone I didn’t know as a mentor. But my mom kept pushing, and eventually, I caved,” says Liana. Initially hesitant, Liana soon found comfort in the bond. Amy arrived just in time, as Liana navigated the unique pressures of being a teen.

“Adults think it’s easier for kids now because we have more resources, but that’s not true. Social media makes everything harder. There’s always this pressure to look a certain way or have a perfect life,” says Liana.

The constant comparisons and unrealistic standards left Liana feeling self-conscious.

“It’s hard to balance everything—friends, school, and family,” Liana shares. “I’ve lost friends because I focused too much on my studies, and I’ve gotten bad grades when I tried to prioritize my friendships. It feels like you can’t win.”

At one point, the pressure to please everyone became overwhelming.

“I was trying so hard to make other people happy that I forgot about myself. That’s when I decided the only person I need to keep happy is me.”

That turning point was one of many that Liana credits to Amy’s influence.

“Amy helps me see things differently. She’s always there to listen and remind me of my worth. She’s taught me that I don’t have to carry the weight of everyone else’s expectations.”

For Amy, mentoring Liana has been a deeply personal and rewarding experience. She often reflects on her own challenges growing up and the guidance she received from her late uncle, Rod Schmidt.

“He was my mentor and taught me to believe in myself even when the odds were against me,” Amy says. “I wanted to be that person for someone else. Liana is everything I hoped for in a Little Sister.”

Amy has encouraged Liana to step outside her comfort zone in ways that have changed her outlook on life. One such moment was a hike to Devil’s Bridge in Sedona.

“I used to be terrified of heights,” says Liana. “But Amy kept encouraging me, step by step. It reminded me that I’m stronger than I think.”

Another pivotal experience was when Amy convinced Liana to participate in a fashion show.

“I was so nervous, but Amy believed in me. When we walked out, I was too scared to look at the crowd. By the end, I realized everyone was cheering for me.”

These moments have helped Liana grow in confidence and resilience.

“Amy pushes me out of my comfort zone and has taught me to believe in myself even if it feels scary.”

Through their time together, Amy and Liana have built a bond that goes far beyond mentorship.

“Amy’s my role model. She inspires me to work hard and be a better person. I want to be as smart and caring as she is.”

For Amy, the feeling is mutual.

“Liana has brought so much joy into my life,” Amy says. “She’s taught me as much as I’ve taught her. I can’t imagine my life without her.”

Amy and Liana’s story highlights the power of mentorship. Through courage, connection, and love, they’ve shown that with heart and encouragement, anything is possible.

Where Cars and Caring Collide

DRIVEN BY PASSION, FUELED BY COMMUNITY: LAURIE AND BUDD FLORKIEWICZ ON PHILANTHROPY AND CLASSIC CARS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY HONORHEALTH

This February, we’re shining a spotlight on Laurie and Budd Florkiewicz, a dynamic North Scottsdale couple whose love story is as captivating as their stunning collection of classic cars. Married for 27 years, their shared passions for sports, philanthropy, and vintage automobiles have not only strengthened their bond but also built a legacy of elegance, community, and adventure.

“We met at a mutual friend’s wedding at Pebble Beach,” Laurie shares, reflecting on the serendipity of their first encounter.

Laurie, who lived in Atlanta at the time, and Budd, living in Arizona, quickly realized they were a perfect match.

“We fell in love and started dating right after the wedding. Budd told me, ‘My life is in Arizona,’ and soon enough, I made the move,” she recalls.

Their wedding at a charming chapel in Beaver Creek, Colorado, was just the beginning of a lifetime of adventures.

Dancing to Neil Young’s Harvest Moon for their first dance, Laurie and Budd set the tone for 27 years of love, laughter, and shared passions. Whether hitting the golf course or hunting the world their life prioritizes unforgettable moments.

However, cruising in classic cars has become the duo’s foundation of connection. Their shared need for speed and adoration for design has blossomed into an impressive 28-car collection.

“Our first collector car was a 1960 Maserati 3500GT Vignale Spyder,” Laurie shares. “That car sparked everything.”

Each car in their collection has its own unique story and charm. Highlights include:

• 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL: Laurie’s favorite and a birthday gift from Budd, this masterpiece features custom ostrich seats. “It’s truly one of a kind,” she says.

• 1954 Ferrari Europa 250: A rare beauty, one of only 17 ever produced, boasting sleek Pinin Farina coachwork and a top speed of 135 mph.

• 1964 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet: Known for its elegant design and sporty performance, this car is a collector’s dream.

• 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air Convertible: An American classic with striking details, this car captures the spirit of a bygone era.

• 1938 Delahaye 135MS Competition Cabriolet: A true showstopper, this car has won “Best in Class” at Pebble Beach and Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

• 1914 Metx Model 22 Speedster: A rare example of the early automobile brass era. The collection also includes rare gems like a 1938 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300, a 1966 Aston Martin DB6, and a 1971 Pontiac GTO Judge convertible.

“We participate in rallies like the Copperstate 1000 and going to the Colorado Grand, trading off driving duties,” Laurie explains. “Budd usually drives the morning leg, and I take over in the afternoon. It’s such a fun way to explore and bond.”

The couple’s garage, lovingly dubbed “Budd’s Garage,” is a space filled with ribbons, trophies, a jukebox, a bar, and even a cigar room.

“It’s where we celebrate our shared love for these beautifully designed works of art,” Laurie says.

Beyond their adoration for autos, Laurie and Budd are deeply rooted in the Valley’s philanthropic community. Laurie’s involvement spans decades, from serving on the Honor Health Foundation Board to serving on the prestigious Heart Ball Committee for 25 years.

“I was so amazed by the generosity of this community when I first moved here,” Laurie says. “The philanthropy here is unmatched, and it’s a privilege to contribute to causes that make a difference.”

Laurie’s recent role as the first female Chairwoman of the Honor Health Foundation Board is a testament to her commitment.

“The Honor Ball itself is a tribute to Virginia G. Piper, who chaired the inaugural event in 1977. Her vision and generosity not only established this cherished tradition but have also contributed more than $25 million to HonorHealth over the years, leaving a legacy of compassion and progress that continues to inspire.”

According to Laurie, the community is newly benefiting from HonorHealth’s dedication to accessible, innovative care, with the recent opening of its new Paradise Valley Complete Care center, offering both urgent care and emergency room services under one roof.

“It is such an honor to lead and support an organization that’s truly transforming healthcare here at home,” she says.

When it comes to celebrating their love, Laurie and Budd keep it simple yet special.

“We enjoy staying home, sitting by the fireplace, and enjoying champagne, cigars and caviar,” Laurie says. “It’s intimate, relaxed, and just perfect for us.”

As for the secret to their lasting marriage? Laurie doesn’t hesitate: “Shared interests. Whether it’s walking the dog or fly fishing, we genuinely enjoy every moment together. Budd is my best friend.”

From their stunning car collection to their unwavering support of the Valley’s philanthropic initiatives, the couple embodies passion, generosity, and commitment. Their story is a testament to the power of shared interests and a life welllived together.

The 48th Honor Ball, one of the Valley’s most prestigious galas, returns on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the JW Marriott Camelback Inn. Co-Chaired by Catherine Tuton and Christina Reuss, MD, the Studio 54-inspired black-tie event will honor Laurie and Budd Florkiewicz. Proceeds benefit HonorHealth’s vital women’s health programs.

DEAR DR. LEXI

Many people wonder if it is safe to consume caffeine while pregnant. We know that caffeine is a stimulant that can cause our heart rates to increase, especially if we ingest too much caffeine. Well, where do we find most of our possible daily caffeine? Yup, in that lovely warm cup of coffee that we crave every morning. Did you know that the typical 8oz cup of coffee has anywhere from 100 - 150mg of caffeine (versus an 8oz cup of tea typically having 50mg)? And don’t forget that foods, like dark chocolate, also contain caffeine.

Studies continue to be performed, and at the moment most data support having less than 200mg of caffeine per day as a general safe amount during pregnancy. Always speak to your doctor surrounding any conditions that may support avoiding caffeine all together, such as certain cardiac conditions or thyroid diseases.

Healthy Smiles

Start Young

For National Children’s Dental Health Month, we’re sharing tips to keep your child’s smile happy and healthy! 480.556.0600

Brush Twice a Day: Once in the morning and before bed. Make it fun with a colorful toothbrush or one featuring their favorite character!

Use the Right Amount of Toothpaste: When your child can spit, use a pea-sized amount. Keep it interesting with fun flavors—vanilla toothpaste, anyone?

Brush for 2 Minutes: Use small circular motions on each tooth surface. Try singing the ABCs or other fun songs to keep your child entertained.

Don’t Forget to Floss: Once molars touch (around age 4), flossing is essential for removing plaque. Flossers and modeling the habit can spark their interest!

Teamwork Brushing: Position yourself behind your child to mimic your brushing technique. If needed, recruit a partner to hold hands and distract while you brush.

Healthy Diet Habits: Avoid sugary snacks, juices, and sticky foods. Opt for fresh fruits, veggies, cheese, and nuts. Remember: fresh fruit beats dried fruit!

Prevention is Key: Schedule dental checkups every 6 months. We’ll provide guidance, track development, and ensure those pearly whites stay healthy!

As the RN for Arcadia’s Metier Clinical Services, I’m constantly asked if we have Mounjaro. Well, the demand for Mounjaro has skyrocketed as a weight loss solution, so it’s tough to get your hands on the name brand.

However, what people don’t understand is there’s a more viable and readily available solution specifically for weight loss: Tirzepatide compounded with L-Carnitine.

When used together, the compound improves muscle recovery, exercises performance and aids in appetite suppression, blood sugar regulation, and food cravings.

And the best part, we have both Tirzepatide and Semaglutide readily available.

The Story of Simply Shroom Friendship and Fungi:

How two visionary women turned their passion into Old Town’s most enchanting cafe experience

Nestled in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, Simply Shroom Café is more than just a place to grab a bite— it’s the realization of a dream fueled by love, resilience, and a passion for health. For co-founders Crystal Carroll and Sharmi Albrechtsen-Kneller, the café represents both a fresh start and a mission to redefine wellness through food, community, and a commitment to better living.

Sharmi’s journey began with heartbreak. After losing her husband to cancer, she discovered the healing potential of medicinal mushrooms. “It was too late to help him,” she reflects, “but I knew I had to share these incredible benefits with others. Mushrooms are nature’s hidden treasures, and it became my mission to bring their magic to everyday life.”

Meanwhile, Crystal—a seasoned restaurateur and former Mrs. Arizona— was crafting unforgettable culinary experiences while dreaming of a concept that combined indulgence with intention. “I’ve spent years in the food industry, but this was a chance to create something truly meaningful,” says Crystal. “I wanted to bring wellness and joy together in a way that felt approachable and inspiring.”

Crystal and her daughters

When the two women met, their paths aligned perfectly. Together, they envisioned Simply Shroom Café as a place where health and happiness coexisted—a sanctuary for connection, nourishment, and joy. Their shared philosophy drew inspiration from the Blue Zones principles and their support of the Healthy Food Initiative spearheaded by Robert Kennedy, which promotes accessibility to wholesome, nutrient-rich foods.

“Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated,” says Sharmi. “We wanted to create a space where people could enjoy delicious food without sacrificing their well-being. That’s why we focus on whole, clean ingredients and thoughtful preparation.”

Walking into the café feels like stepping into a vibrant fairytale. Bold pink-and-green décor, lush wallpaper, and an atmosphere humming with energy set the stage for a truly unique experience. But the real magic is in the menu.

Simply Shroom isn’t just a coffee shop. It offers a full menu brimming with fresh, whole foods—baby spinach, eggs, microgreens, avocados, and nuts—and plant-based options crafted with wellness in mind. Drinks like in-house boba teas, matchas, green teas, and cold brews are served with complimentary plant milks, and their signature 4M mushroom blend, tasteless and odorless, adds a subtle but powerful health boost to many offerings.

“We’ve transformed mushrooms from something people might avoid into an experience they crave,” says Sharmi. “We take pride in turning perceptions upside down and showing that healthy food can be indulgent, too.”

“Our goal was to create something special that celebrates health without compromising flavor,” Crystal adds. “This isn’t just about coffee; it’s about creating experiences that nourish the body and soul.”

Their dedication to reimagining wellness through food has helped Simply Shroom Café flourish, attracting locals and visitors alike for brunch, lunch, and vibrant community gatherings.

“People tell us all the time how much they appreciate the care we put into the menu,” says Crystal. “It’s not just about what we serve—it’s about how it makes people feel.”

Their story has even caught the attention of a TikTok reality show, which will document the highs and lows of their journey.

“We want to inspire others, especially women, to chase their dreams fearlessly,” Sharmi shares. “If we can do it, so can you. It’s about believing in yourself and the impact you can make.”

Simply Shroom Café is just the beginning. The duo is expanding their vision with wellness products, including mushroom-infused vitamin gummies and low-sugar candies, all aimed at making healthy living accessible and enjoyable.

“This isn’t just a café; it’s a movement,” Crystal says. “And we’re just getting started.”

Estate Planning: Protecting Wealth for Generations

Here’s how to secure your family’s future through strategic planning

Preserving wealth ensures financial security and family legacy. Estate planning aligns asset distribution with your wishes while reducing taxes and legal hurdles.

UNDERSTANDING ESTATE TAXES

Estate taxes can impact the wealth passed to heirs. Planning ahead is crucial.

• In 2025, the federal estate tax exemption is $13.99 million per individual ($27.98 million for couples).

• Amounts above the exemption are taxed up to 40%.

• Strategies to Reduce Estate Taxes:

• Lifetime Gifting: Transfer wealth tax-free using the $19,000 annual gift tax exclusion (2025).

• Spousal Portability: Apply an unused exemption from one spouse to the surviving spouse’s estate.

• Charitable Giving: Reduce taxable estate through donations or charitable trusts.

TRUSTS: THE FOUNDATION OF ESTATE PLANNING

Trusts are invaluable for managing wealth, avoiding probate, and securing tax advantages.

• Types of Trusts:

• Revocable Living Trusts: Flexibility during your lifetime and seamless asset transfer after death.

• Irrevocable Trusts: Remove assets from your taxable estate and offer creditor protection.

• Generation-Skipping Trusts (GSTs): Minimize estate taxes when transferring wealth to grandchildren.

• Specialized Trusts:

• Qualified Personal Residence Trusts (QPRTs): Transfer homes at reduced tax values.

• Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts (GRATs): Retain income while minimizing gift taxes.

WEALTH TRANSFER STRATEGIES

Effective wealth transfer requires strategic financial and tax planning.

• Lifetime Gifting:

• Use lifetime estate tax exemptions for larger gifts.

• Gift appreciating assets to shift future growth outside your taxable estate.

• Family Limited Partnerships (FLPs):

• Gradually transfer ownership in businesses or properties while maintaining control.

• Insurance-Based Strategies:

• Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts (ILITs): Remove life insurance proceeds from the taxable estate.

• Use permanent life insurance to pass wealth tax-free.

PLANNING FOR BUSINESS SUCCESSION

For families with businesses, succession planning is essential for smooth transitions. Professional guidance balances family dynamics and business interests.

• Buy-Sell Agreements:

• Outline ownership transfer terms for retirement, disability, or death.

• Funded by life insurance, they provide liquidity for buyouts.

• Family Limited Liability Companies (FLLCs):

• Gradually transfer ownership while retaining control.

WEALTH PRESERVATION THROUGH PROTECTION

Safeguarding assets from creditors and legal disputes is critical.

• Tools for Protection:

• Domestic and Offshore Asset Protection Trusts: Protect assets while maintaining control.

• Homestead Exemptions: Shield primary residences under state laws. Proactive measures safeguard wealth for future generations.

HEALTHCARE AND LEGACY PLANNING

Estate planning extends beyond finances to ensure your wishes are respected.

• Healthcare Directives:

• Specify medical preferences with a living will.

• Appoint a healthcare proxy.

• Durable Powers of Attorney:

• Grant authority to manage financial matters if incapacitated.

• Ethical Wills:

• Share values, life lessons, and family history alongside financial plans.

STAYING AHEAD OF LEGISLATIVE CHANGES

Tax laws evolve, so regular updates to your estate plan are essential.

• Federal Changes:

• In 2026, estate tax exemptions may revert to pre2018 levels (~$5.49 million).

• State-Level Updates:

• Monitor changes in estate and inheritance taxes in your state.

A Monthly Spotlight Series Featuring Three Industry Leaders Making Waves in the Valley

Behind the Brand and Beyond the Business

Each month, we spotlight three of our dynamic partners giving you a unique glimpse into their personal passions and perspectives. Each gets 100 words to answer a hand-selected question, giving you a deeper connection to the people driving the Valley and serving our sacred community.

How do you define success?

To me, success means pursuing what you love, taking chances on yourself, and creating joy for others. In October 2024, I reopened Apricot Lane Scottsdale, driven by my passion for people, fashion, and jewelry. My love for connecting with women inspired this journey, and my husband, Eric, whom I married in November 2024, has been my greatest source of support. I aim to create a welcoming boutique experience, curating high-quality, on-trend merchandise that reflects my customers’ unique styles.

How has your journey influenced your approach to business and client connections?

My journey with Myranda Fine Jewelry stems from a love of timeless design, meaningful connections, and staying true to my word. I’ve built a brand that celebrates stories and creates joy through oneof-a-kind pieces. Growing up with challenges taught me resilience and the value of giving back. Today, I’m driven by a mission to pay forward the good I’ve received, bringing sparkle to my clients’ lives while staying grounded in authenticity and care. It brings me joy making life brighter for my customers, family, and friends.

Myranda North Molina, Myranda Fine Jewelry

What is a personal belief or principle that guides your business strategy?

For me, pediatric dentistry is about more than just teeth—it’s about creating trust, connection, and genuine care. Every child’s smile tells a story, and behind it is a family hoping for a positive and comforting experience. I feel incredibly lucky to work with the team at Affiliated Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, where we share a simple but powerful philosophy: treat people, not just teeth. Together, we strive to make every family feel heard and supported. This belief drives my passion and makes every smile we shape profoundly fulfilling.

The tournament kicks off two days early with the fourth annual Concert in the Coliseum. This year’s headliners? None other than Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, delivering a show-stopping start to the week.

Expanded Spectator Walking Areas

Walkways have been widened near high-traffic areas, like between holes 16 and 10, making it easier for fans to move comfortably throughout the course. Essential, given the WMPO continues to be one of the largest-attended golf tournaments in the world.

A Legendary 90th Anniversary Celebration

The 2025 edition marks the 90th playing of the WM Phoenix Open, celebrating its long history as one of golf’s most exciting and fan-focused events.

Tournament History and Drama

The WM Phoenix Open regularly delivers nail-biting finishes. For example, in 2024, Nick Taylor claimed victory in a two-hole playoff against Charley Hoffman – the sixth playoff finish in the last nine years.

Hosted by The Thunderbirds, the event has raised over $208 million for charity since its inception, including a record $17.5 million in 2024 alone.

A Love Note to My Fellow Singles in Scottsdale

You Are Not Behind... You Are Right on Time!

If you told me as a young girl that I would not be married or have a few kids by 45, I would never have believed you. I come from a generation and time where ‘success’ seemed defined by a society-approved checklist: go to college, climb the corporate ladder, achieve the title and paycheck, get married, have kids, and land your dream home in the right zip code by age 35. And while this may sound ideal for some, not achieving it all within the expected timeframe often left society quick to label you as having ‘failed at life’—or worse, as if something was inherently wrong with you.

Well, great news: you are not behind, you most certainly have not failed, and there’s nothing wrong with you.

You, my friends, are right on time and exactly where you need to be. Living your authentic truth... a truth that should be celebrated.

What if the lesson in the journey for many of us is less comparison to other people’s timelines and more surrendering and trusting in knowing we’re all here for different experiences? For our destiny. That the Universe, God, Source, or whatever you believe in has a plan for you better than you have imagined for yourself. Just because it’s taking a little longer for you and your person to align with divine timing doesn’t mean it won’t happen.

I felt compelled to share this message especially because it’s Valentine’s month. It’s my intention for all those reading this who are single, at any age, to feel less alone and validated in their feelings and life experiences. To be reminded that our worth and our life identity is not our relationship status: single, married, partnered, widowed, divorced - you are worthy exactly as you are!

A decade ago, a profound upheaval in my personal life sparked a transformative journey of deep spiritual healing and self-discovery. It was one I didn’t know I needed and equally could not be more grateful for. I moved away from the circus of my once desired, day-to-day life and constant hustle in Los Angeles; my identity and career, and started a new life here in Scottsdale.

Life here was immediately softer and more aligned. Starting fresh at 35—moving to a new city alone while building a small business—was surely daunting, but it was also an incredibly courageous leap. It was lonely at times and easy to let the pressures of timelines, society, friends, family, the checklist, and let’s face it, my own wants and desires take over, too. With years flying by filled with engagement announcements,
