SPRING INTO SUMMER CONFIDENCE

WITH PERSONALIZED BREAST AUGMENTATION

As the warmth of summer approaches, now is the perfect time to embark on your journey toward renewed confidence. At CraftMD, we specialize in customized breast augmentation tailored to your unique aesthetic goals, ensuring you feel your best this upcoming season.

YOUR VISION, OUR EXPERTISE

We believe that every patient’s vision of beauty is distinct. Our process begins with a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Randall Craft, a double boardcertified, Harvard-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon. During this private conversation, Dr. Craft takes the time to understand what a natural outcome means to you, aligning our approach with your personal aspirations.

INNOVATIVE PLANNING FOR NATURAL RESULTS

To bring your vision to life, we utilize advanced tools and techniques:

1. Sizing Kit Experience: You’ll have the opportunity to try our specialized sizing kit—think elegant “chicken cutlets” that correspond to various implant volumes. This hands-on experience helps you visualize and select the size that best matches your desired look.

2. 3D Virtual Simulations: Leveraging the VECTRA H2 3D Imaging System, we create detailed virtual models of your chest. This technology allows you to see a realistic preview of your post-procedure appearance, facilitating informed decisions about your augmentation.

3. Personalized Inspiration: We encourage you to share a series of inspiration photos with Dr. Craft. While every body is unique, these images help convey your aesthetic preferences, enabling us to tailor the procedure to your specific goals.

COMFORT AND CARE

Your comfort is paramount. Our board-certified MD anesthesiologist administers regional pain control as a standard part of our breast augmentation procedures. This approach significantly reduces post-operative discomfort, promoting a smoother and more pleasant recovery experience.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS

Our commitment to excellence is reflected in the experiences of our patients:

1. “Dr. Craft is gracious, understanding of my concerns, and an excellent surgeon. He made me feel at ease, answered all my questions about my procedure, and most importantly, my procedure ended with perfect results.”

2. “He really cares about his patients and knows what he’s doing. Thankful to have found him.”

Bagels, Lox & Mr. Colangelo

When I arrived at our photoshoot with Mr. Jerry Colangelo at the Adobe Bar & Grill, he was sitting there, enjoying his bagels and lox, and warmly invited me to join him. Sitting across from Phoenix’s ultimate icon was surreal. Here I was, talking to the man responsible for bringing professional sports to Arizona. The man who built the teams my sons idolize. The man who helped bring home Olympic gold for USA Basketball. A powerhouse real estate mogul. A man who probably has a million A-list athletes and celebrities on speed dial. And yet, here he was, graciously agreeing to this cover story and interview—for who knows why. I was humbled. Honored.

Beyond the magazine spread, I had the privilege of sitting down with Mr. Colangelo for an unfiltered, hour-long conversation on my podcast. He was an open book, answering every single question with eloquence and rich storytelling. If you enjoy reading his feature, I highly recommend listening to the full interview—because trust me, it’s worth it.

As I reflect on the theme of this issue—the Investing Issue—I wanted to go beyond the financial definition. This issue is about investing in everything : in life, in travel, in lifestyle, in physical health, mental health, in real estate, in yourself, in your family—and most importantly, in your community. My hope is that as you flip through these pages, you’ll feel enlightened, inspired, educated, and entertained.

Our  City Scene section is dedicated to our incredible PVCL anniversary celebration at Cala. Every year, we come together with our partners, friends, community members, and supporters to mark another milestone. This year, I was overwhelmed by the turnout—surrounded by people I cherish so deeply. It’s a reminder of the special community we continue to build and foster. A heartfelt thank you to Chef Beau and the entire Cala team for making it a night to remember.

Here’s to investing in what matters most.

MR. JERRY COLANGELO

One-on-One with The Godfather of Phoenix

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Few individuals have had a greater impact on the world of sports, business, and real estate than Jerry Colangelo. From his humble beginnings on the South Side of Chicago to shaping the landscape of professional basketball, baseball, and urban development in Arizona, his journey is one

“I’ve built an entire career on handshakes, looking people in the eye, and making sure my word means something.”

of vision, perseverance, and leadership. Over the decades, Mr. Colangelo has built teams, transformed cities, and inspired countless individuals with his work ethic and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Our one-on-one conversation explores Jerry’s life, career, and the lessons he has learned along the way.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR INCREDIBLE JOURNEY?

I think I’ve been very blessed. There have been times when I sit back and wondered, “Why me?” There were plenty of people more skilled or available. Yet, I’ve had these incredible opportunities.

When I reflect on my life, I see a combination of timing, hard work, and faith. There were moments where I could have gone a different direction, but something always seemed to guide me to the right path. Whether it was sports, business, or my family,

I always felt that I had a responsibility to make the most of what I had been given.

TALK TO US ABOUT GROWING UP IN CHICAGO.

My upbringing shaped everything I am today. I grew up on the far South Side in an Italian neighborhood. It was a tough but tight-knit community, where everyone knew each other. Hard work and loyalty were ingrained in us. We didn’t have much, but we shared everything. If one family was struggling, the rest of the neighborhood pitched in. I learned the value of community, and that stuck with me throughout my life. I always thought of myself as a representative of that old neighborhood, no matter where life took me.

I remember running around the streets, playing ball, and hustling to make a few bucks. There was no room for entitlement—we worked for everything. Those lessons stayed with me when I entered the world of sports and business.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

Delivering newspapers—morning, afternoon, and even a couple of weekends. I had multiple routes, and I knew every house and every customer by name. I did a lot of caddying at country clubs too, lugging golf bags for men who seemed to have the world figured out. I listened to their conversations and picked up on how they carried themselves. I stocked shelves at the grocery store and took on any odd job I could. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was that no job was too small. Work was work, and doing it well meant something. I wasn’t afraid to get my hands dirty. That mentality helped me later in life—whether I was negotiating deals for franchises or sitting courtside watching my team play, I treated every moment with the same level of commitment and respect.

HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR WIFE, JOAN?

It was a blind date. I’ll never forget the moment I saw her—she was beautiful, and I knew right then that she was different. That night, I took her to a party on campus, and at one point, I walked away to talk to some friends. She was sitting alone for a bit, and when I finally came back, I asked if she wanted to dance. She said, “Whatever,” with a smile. It was a slow, romantic song, and I just went for it—I kissed her, right then and there. She was stunned, but I looked at her and said, “Don’t worry, you’ll never be sorry.” And six months later, we decided to spend the rest of our lives together. We’ve been married for over 64 years now.

YOU MOVED TO ARIZONA WITH JUST $300 IN YOUR POCKET.

Yes, it was a leap of faith. I had been with the Chicago Bulls for a short time, but when Phoenix was awarded an expansion team, I was offered the GM job. I flew out here, and it was a stark contrast from Chicago—it was 20 below when I left, and 75 degrees when I landed in Phoenix. I smelled the orange blossoms, saw the sunshine, and I just knew. I called Joan that night and said, “Pack your bags, babe. We’re moving to Phoenix.”

CONTINUED >

Two weeks later, we arrived with nine suitcases, three young kids, and $300 to our name. No house, no guarantees—just a belief that we were making the right move. Looking back, it was the best decision we ever made.

HOW DID YOU BUILD THE SUNS INTO A RESPECTED FRANCHISE?

When I arrived, Phoenix wasn’t exactly a basketball town. We had to build a fan base from scratch. I remember telling the media at my first press conference, “This community owes us nothing. We have to earn their support.” And that’s what we did. We focused on building the right team and engaging with the community.

We brought in players like Connie Hawkins and Paul Westphal, and later, Charles Barkley. The 1993 Finals run was one of the most electrifying times in the city. That team—Barkley, Kevin Johnson, Dan Majerle—gave everything they had. We came close to a championship, but just fell short.

WHY DID YOU LEAVE THE SUNS?

After nearly 40 years, I sold the team in 2004. It was a business decision—one that was hard to make. But I knew I had built something that would last, and I had other ventures to focus on, like baseball and USA Basketball.

WHAT WAS YOUR VISION FOR THE DIAMONDBACKS?

I didn’t want us to be just another expansion team. I wanted us to compete immediately. We signed Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Luis Gonzalez—guys who knew how to win. And in just four years, we won the 2001 World Series against the Yankees.

“We moved to Arizona with nine suitcases, three young kids, and $300. No house, no guarantees—just a belief that we were making the right move. Looking back, it was the best decision we ever made.”

DESCRIBE THAT MOMENT.

When Gonzo hit that walk-off single, it was surreal. I thought, “Did that really just happen?” I worked my whole life for a championship in basketball, and then won one in baseball. I looked up and said, “Lord, you have a funny sense of humor.”

HOW DID YOU REBUILD USA BASKETBALL?

After the disaster in 2004, I was given full control. I told players, “This isn’t a summer gig. It’s a three-year commitment.” Kobe, LeBron, and others bought in. In 2008, the “Redeem Team” won gold in Beijing. We continued in 2012 and 2016. It was about restoring pride in playing for the USA.

WHAT DOES WEARING YOUR USA BASKETBALL RING MEAN TO YOU?

It represents everything we accomplished— turning the program around, winning multiple gold medals, and proving that USA Basketball was back where it belonged: on top.

WHY DID YOU SUPPORT BRINGING THE WNBA TO PHOENIX?

When David Stern pitched the idea, I said, “I’m in.” I believed in women’s basketball and the importance of growing the game. The Mercury were one of the first teams in the league, and seeing them win championships has been incredible.

YOU ALSO HELPED BRING THE COYOTES TO PHOENIX. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE TEAM NOW?

It was a challenge from the start. Hockey in the desert was a gamble, and ownership struggles made it tough. I had hoped for long-term success, but there were too many challenges.

YOU WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN PHOENIX’S REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT. WHAT WAS YOUR APPROACH?

Downtown Phoenix was underdeveloped when we built the Suns’ arena and Chase Field. I saw an opportunity to transform the city into a sports and business hub. The arena, the ballpark, the revitalization of downtown—it all played a role in making Phoenix what it is today.

SPEAKING OF REAL ESTATE, YOU’RE QUITE THE POWERHOUSE. TELL US ABOUT JDM AND HOW THAT PARTNERSHIP CAME TOGETHER.

JDM stands for Jerry, David, and Mel. I met Dave Eaton when I first arrived in Phoenix in 1968 through an organization called Young Life, a non-denominational Christian group. My wife, Joan, had been involved in Young Life back in the early ‘50s, and when she mentioned it in a newspaper interview about our move, Young Life members in Phoenix reached out to welcome us. That’s how I met Dave and his family.

A few years later, I met Mel Shultz, who was about ten years younger than me. Dave is four years older than I am, and over time, we built this partnership based on trust. We’ve been together for over 40 years, and here’s the incredible part—we never had anything in writing. No contracts, no legal documents. Just a handshake. It’s all been based on trust and relationships. That’s how we do business.

HOW DID YOU APPROACH REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT IN ARIZONA?

We knew Arizona was going to explode in growth—it wasn’t a matter of if, but when. We positioned ourselves by acquiring property in areas we knew would be in high demand, like the West Valley. We also

SCAN ME!
Jerry Colangelo: The Visionary Behind Phoenix’s Rise
JDM Partners, owners of the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club

made strategic partnerships, like our deal with Howard Hughes Corporation, which was the largest master-planned developer in the country. That was the biggest real estate deal in Arizona history.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS IN REAL ESTATE?

Relationships are everything. Business is about trust. I’ve built an entire career on handshakes, looking people in the eye, and making sure my word means something. If you don’t have integrity, you have nothing. Listen more than you talk, be a sponge, and never stop learning. Be willing to take calculated risks—don’t let fear stop you from stepping forward.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON ARIZONA’S REAL ESTATE FUTURE?

Arizona is in a top-five growth market. The West Valley is booming, industrial real estate is hot, and residential is shifting positively despite economic changes. The big question is water—do we have enough to support the expansion? The answer is yes, but it’s a political issue. I believe Arizona will continue to thrive, and we’ve positioned ourselves for that future.

HOW DOES YOUR BACKGROUND IN SPORTS ALIGN WITH YOUR SUCCESS IN REAL ESTATE?

It’s all about competition, building teams, and having a vision. In sports, you have to plan, adapt, and execute. Real estate is no different. You scout opportunities, make calculated moves, and build relationships. The same drive that pushed me in sports drives me in business. It’s about seeing what’s possible before others do and making it happen.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

That I helped shape Phoenix. The Suns, Diamondbacks, Mercury, USA Basketball— they all left a lasting mark. I take pride in knowing that I helped build something that will outlast me.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG PEOPLE?

Be a sponge. Surround yourself with smart people, listen more than you talk, and work harder than anyone expects. Success isn’t luck—it’s preparation meeting opportunity. And when that opportunity comes, be ready.

Kicks by Kenna

FROM A CREATIVE PASSION TO A POWERHOUSE BRAND

At just 21 years old, ASU student Kenna Rettew has turned an at-home hobby into a booming business, designing custom shoes for Olympians, NFL players, MLB All-Stars, and NASCAR drivers. It started when she was just 16, doodling on sneakers during lockdown. One of her first big clients? Simone Biles.

From that moment on, Kicks by Kenna took off. Kenna soon landed her first NFL cleat design gig, working with teams across the country. Now, she’s been featured on ESPN, paints live at charity events, works with every major sports team in AZ, and has even painted kicks for a former president.

We sat down with the young entrepreneur to talk all things art, business, and what it’s like living a dream come true.

“Being the only female featured artist at the MLB All-Star Game a while back was incredible. When ESPN aired my story, my Instagram exploded!”

WERE YOU ONE OF THOSE KIDS DOODLING IN CLASS INSTEAD OF PAYING ATTENTION?

I was! I actually used to get in trouble for it. My teachers would be like, “Kenna, listen!” but I couldn’t stop.

WAS ART SOMETHING THAT JUST CAME NATURALLY TO YOU?

Yes, mostly. I took a few art classes when I was really young, but I’ve been self-taught for the most part.

FAST FORWARD TO 16—COVID HITS, AND YOU’RE ON LOCKDOWN. HOW DID THAT TURN INTO LAUNCHING A BUSINESS?

It was such a weird time. I saw a YouTube trend of people painting shoes for celebrities and thought, “I could do that.” I didn’t even have social media at the time—my mom was the one who posted my work on Facebook. And from there, things took off.

DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST CUSTOM SHOES?

Yes! They were for my little brother. I painted Chinese dragons and gold dripping all over them.

AT WHAT POINT DID YOU REALIZE THIS COULD BE A BUSINESS?

There were a few people painting shoes as a hobby, but I saw the potential. And my mom was my biggest supporter. CONTINUED

FROM YOUR LITTLE BROTHER TO AN OLYMPIAN—THAT’S A HUGE LEAP. HOW DID YOU LAND YOUR FIRST BIG CLIENT?

My first big client was MyKayla Skinner, an Olympic gymnast. My gymnastics coach had a connection, and she had heard about my work. She reached out, and I painted a pair of custom shoes for her commemorating the Tokyo Olympics.

AND THEN CAME SIMONE BILES. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?

Through Michaela! She helped connect me, and I got to deliver Simone’s shoes in person at an Olympic event. It was surreal.

THEN THINGS UNFOLDED DESIGNING CLEATS FOR NFL PLAYERS...

Yep! Bradley Bozeman from the Baltimore Ravens was looking for a cleat artist for the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats campaign. My mom and I reached out, and he gave me a shot. I remember sitting in math class, thinking, “I need to get home and make NFL cleats!”

AND NASCAR, TOO?

NASCAR is an incredible organization. I did custom shoes for five of the drivers and got to personally hand them off at a VIP event.

YOU’RE ALSO DEEPLY CONNECTED WITH THE ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS.

I’m on their activation team—the hype crew! I tried out and got the spot. It’s been an amazing experience, and surely opens doors to working with players and staff.

WHAT’S THE PROCESS OF DESIGNING A PAIR OF CUSTOM SHOES?

It’s a mix of different paints and coatings, all handpainted. The prep work is super important, and the final clear coat makes them waterproof and durable.

WHAT KIND OF SHOES WORK BEST FOR PAINTING?

Leather and canvas—Nike Air Forces, Jordans, Vans, and Converse.

“Some people have a clear idea, but my favorite projects are when they trust me to create something special.”

HOW DO YOU JUGGLE WORK AND GOING TO SCHOOL AT ASU?

Sleep is the last thing I think about. My professors know about Kicks by Kenna, and most are super supportive.

BEYOND SHOES, YOU’VE EXPANDED INTO PAINTING JACKETS. ONE STANDOUT PIECE WAS FOR ASU FORMER QUARTERBACK CAMERON SKATTEBO’S GIRLFRIEND. HOW DID THAT PROJECT COME TOGETHER?

Cam reached out and wanted a custom-painted jacket for his girlfriend to wear to the games. We worked together to come up with a design that incorporated ASU and his personal brand. The whole process was exciting, but the funniest part was when he came to pick it up. I didn’t realize he was standing at my door for like 20 minutes just chatting with my dad! By the time I finally ran out to greet him, I was still in my pajamas. It was a little chaotic!

BUCKET LIST CLIENT?

Taylor Swift. Hands down.

WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL FOR KICKS BY KENNA?

I want my own studio—somewhere people can come and enjoy creative space. A place where artists can explore and build their own version of Kicks by Kenna.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR YOUNG ARTISTS LOOKING TO TURN THEIR PASSION INTO A BUSINESS?

Believe in yourself. Sky’s the limit if you go for it.

Larry Fitzgerald’s impact goes beyond football. Through the Larry Fitzgerald Foundation, he honors his late mother by supporting breast cancer initiatives and empowering underserved youth through education, after-school programs, and sports.

Now in its 15th year, Fitz’s Supper Club unites top athletes and leaders to fuel these efforts. With the event happening later this month, PVCL’s Nadine Bubeck sat down with the legend to discuss his passion for philanthropy and the power of investing in the community.

FIFTEEN YEARS OF THE SUPPER CLUB—WHAT DOES THAT MILESTONE MEAN TO YOU?

“It’s humbling, but this isn’t about me. It’s about the community that continues to show up and support us. Without them, we wouldn’t have made it to year 10, let alone 15. It’s a testament to the partnerships we’ve built and the generosity of those who believe in our mission.”

YOUR FOUNDATION WAS INSPIRED BY THE LOSS OF YOUR MOTHER. IF SHE WERE HERE TODAY, WHAT DO YOU THINK SHE WOULD SAY?

“She’d tell me to keep pushing, to keep improving. That was just who she was—never satisfied, always looking to make things better, more efficient, more impactful. That’s exactly what we try to do each year. If last year was great, how can we raise the bar this year? The more we grow, the more we can give back to the people and organizations we serve.”

DO YOU CARRY YOUR MOTHER’S MEMORY WITH YOU DAILY?

“Every single day. I keep her last driver’s license in my wallet—it never leaves me. It’s my reminder of why I do this. My mom had a heart like no other. She had an endless capacity for kindness, and I hope I carry even a fraction of that with me.”

YOU’VE BEEN INVOLVED IN PHILANTHROPY FOR YEARS. IS THERE A MOMENT THAT STANDS OUT?

“There have been a lot of great moments, but I think about what we’ve been able to accomplish this past year. Through our ‘Breast Believe’ campaign, we’ve provided over 470 mammograms. We’ve installed technology labs in 100 different locations. Those are real, tangible impacts. And we’re just getting started. I’ll be even happier when we hit that 1,000 mammogram mark.”

WHAT’S A STORY FROM YOUR FOUNDATION’S WORK THAT STICKS WITH YOU?

“We took about 100 kids to a NASCAR event a few months ago. Most of them expected just loud, fast cars—but they walked away with a completely different perspective. They saw the science behind it, how everything from tire rotations to gas changes is calculated through algorithms and technology. That’s the kind of experience I want to give kids— opening doors to things they never imagined.”

AS A FATHER, WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO INSTILL IN YOUR OWN CHILDREN AND THE KIDS YOU IMPACT?

“Confidence. Self-belief. There’s so much divisiveness in the world, but I want kids to know that if

Fitz’s Supper Club 2024- Cardinals offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum

they work hard, anything is possible. Whether they want to be a doctor, lawyer, athlete, musician—whatever it is—it’s attainable. And it’s up to organizations like ours to rally behind them and show them what’s possible.”

YOUR SON IS A JUNIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL AND PLAYS FOOTBALL. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR HIM?

“Enjoy it. So many kids are in a rush to get to the next level, but there’s something pure about high school sports—playing for your teammates, for the love of the game, before it becomes a business. I tell him to soak it all in, because once you move up, it gets a lot more competitive and transactional.”

HOW DID YOUR OWN FOOTBALL CAREER SHAPE YOUR PASSION FOR PHILANTHROPY?

“My mom had me doing service work before I ever picked up a football. It wasn’t optional—she’d drag my brother and me to all of her philanthropic events. It just became part of who we were as a family. So when I made it to the NFL and had a platform, I knew I had a responsibility to use it for something bigger than myself. Now, I try to bring my own kids to our activations so they grow up the same way.”

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE SUPPER CLUB, AN EXCLUSIVE EVENT AT DOMINICK’S AND YOUR BIGGEST FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR.

“You never really know who’s going to show up until they hit the red carpet. It’s always an incredible group.”

WHAT’S HARDER—PREPPING FOR A BIG NFL GAME OR HOSTING THE SUPPER CLUB?

“Totally different. Football is important, but at the end of the day, after the game is over, those fighting breast cancer are still sick, those kids in under-resourced schools still need support. The work we do through the foundation is 24/7, and that puts everything into perspective.”

WHO’S ON YOUR DREAM GUEST LIST FOR THE SUPPER CLUB?

“If had to pick someone, I’d love to have some former teammates—Budda Baker, James Conner, Trey McBride. Those guys mean a lot to me.”

Fitz’s Supper Club 2024 with the Dominick's Steakhouse Team

WHAT’S ON THE MENU AT THE SUPPER CLUB?

“I love the superfood salad, crispy shrimp and the rib cap, medium—it comes on a hot plate so you can keep it cooking. And for dessert, the caramel cake.”

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO TELL KIDS DREAMING OF A CAREER IN SPORTS?

“Follow your heart, but know it’s not easy. It takes time, dedication, and a lot of setbacks. It’s a tough road, but if it’s what you love, it’s worth every step.”

WHAT’S ON YOUR PLAYLIST RIGHT NOW?

“Been listening to Summer Walker’s new release on repeat.”

YOU’VE HAD AN INCREDIBLE CAREER IN FOOTBALL AND PHILANTHROPY. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR BIGGEST WIN?

“I hope it’s still ahead of me. That’s what keeps me motivated—knowing there’s still more work to be done, more impact to be made.”

ROXI MCNABB: FROM ATHLETE TO ADVOCATE

Caris Golf Event

SPORTS, FAMILY, AND LEVELING THE PLAYING FIELD FOR KIDS

Our community is home to incredible athletes who not only achieve greatness, but are deeply invested in giving back. We sat down with Roxi McNabb—wife of NFL legend Donovan McNabb, mother of four, former athlete, and the driving force behind the Caris Sports Foundation. Here’s how Roxi’s investing in the next generation and shaping futures.

Donovan McNabb, Caris Golf Event

LET’S START AT THE BEGINNING—WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?

I was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. I’m the youngest of eight kids, so you learn to be tough early on. Everything in our house was a competition.

Soccer was my first love, but I was recruited more heavily for basketball.

AND THAT LED YOU TO SYRACUSE?

Yes. I ended up getting a basketball scholarship. I stayed for five years and earned my master’s degree.

YOU MET DONOVAN AT SYRACUSE...

We met in history class. I used to show up in my sweats after practice, and one

Caris Golf Event

day, he asked me, “Why do you always come in here looking like that?” I told him I had practice, and he didn’t believe me because I’m 5’3.” So he started walking through the gym and saw me playing, and eventually, he realized, okay, she’s legit.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE HE WAS THE ONE?

We were just kids—both of us focused on our sports and school. But over time, we built something special, and we always found our way back to each other.

HOW DID YOU BALANCE YOUR OWN CAREER AMBITIONS WITH DONOVAN’S RISING NFL CAREER?

After Syracuse, I went to work for the Big East Conference while he was in Philly. Then, I got a job at Villanova’s athletic department, so we made it work. Eventually, when we started a family, I transitioned into staying home full-time, because let’s be real—managing four kids and an NFL schedule is a full-time job.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING THE WIFE OF AN NFL QUARTERBACK?

It was fun, but it came with challenges—especially in Philly, where the fans are  passionate. I had to tune out the noise, stop listening to sports radio, and just support Donovan through the highs and lows. But I never saw myself as just an “NFL wife.” I was always an athlete first. I’d rather be in sneakers than heels.

WHY DID YOU AND DONOVAN DECIDE TO BUILD A LIFE IN AZ?

Donovan had trained here in the off-seasons. He loved it, and when he started working in TV post-football, it made sense to settle here. Plus, you can’t shovel sunshine.

YOU’RE RAISING FOUR INCREDIBLE KIDS— TELL US ABOUT THEM.

Our oldest daughter is 20, finishing college early with a business degree and heading into a dual MBA/MPA program. She plays basketball, and we’re incredibly proud of her. Then, we have 16-year-old twins—our daughter plays basketball and softball, and our son plays football and hockey. And our youngest keeps us busy with sports, too.

CONTINUED >

THAT LASTS

“I NEVER SAW MYSELF AS JUST AN NFL WIFE— ATHLETE FIRST, ALWAYS.”

WITH YOUR OWN ATHLETIC BACKGROUND, WHAT KIND OF SPORTS PARENT ARE YOU?

I try not to be a sideline parent, but it’s hard! (Laughs) My expectation isn’t that they score all the points—I just want them to hustle and do their part. I think the hardest thing as a sports parent is teaching them how to handle losses. Sometimes, the best thing you can do after a tough game is just take them for ice cream and let them decompress.

As parents, we must remember—it’s not about raising the next pro athlete. It’s about raising great people who can take what they learn from sports into life.

WHO’S A BETTER COACH—YOU OR DONOVAN?

He’s definitely more technical. He has this incredible memory—he remembers every play, every moment, and can break down skills in such detail. I’m more of an in-game coach. I can read the flow of the game, make adjustments, and put players in the best position to succeed. He’s all about preparation, while I’m about execution in the moment. He’s always been proactive in coaching our kids- from flag to softball.

DO YOU GET LOUD ON THE SIDELINES?

I try not to be (HA!). As an athlete, I know what it takes, so I expect my kids to hustle

and do their part. I only get frustrated if they’re not giving their best effort. My husband is definitely louder than me... He’s that dad yelling, “Shoot the ball!”

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE CARIS SPORTS FOUNDATION.

It started when Donovan and I were coaching club basketball. We saw firsthand how expensive club sports are, and how many kids couldn’t afford to play. We were helping a few kids ourselves, but we realized we could do so much more. So we built Caris to provide scholarships for kids to play sports—whether it’s a recreational league or competitive travel teams.

WHAT KIND OF IMPACT HAS CARIS HAD?

In 2024 alone, we gave out over 90 scholarships. We help kids in all sports—from soccer to dance. We’ve funded kids who are now playing in college, and even one girl who was just called up to Ecuador’s senior women’s national soccer team.

Our goal is to raise even more so we can fully fund scholarships instead of just partial support.

We have two big fundraisers a year. In April, coming up, we have our Caris Golf Tournament, and in November, we host Sneakers & Cocktails. And we’re always accepting donations.

From the NFL to HGTV: Winning in Real Estate

Devon Kennard’s career has been anything but ordinary. Born and raised in AZ, the former NFL linebacker grew up with football in his blood— his father, Derek Kennard, played in the league before him. After nearly a decade in the NFL, most notably on the Lions and Cards, Devon made a seamless transition into real estate, leveraging his passion for investing to create lasting wealth for himself and others.

Devon Kennard

YOU GREW UP IN ARIZONA AND EVENTUALLY CAME FULL CIRCLE, FINISHING YOUR FOOTBALL CAREER WITH THE CARDINALS. WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE?

It was surreal. Not many guys get to play professionally in their hometown, so being on the Cardinals was extra special. Plus, it helped me build relationships off the field, especially in real estate, which I had already been investing in while playing.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN THE NFL?

Getting drafted, without a doubt- you dream about it as a kid. But if I had to pick a specific game, it would be playing against the Giants—my former team—when I was with the Lions. I had a fumble recovery off a pass to Saquon Barkley and ran it in for a touchdown. The other big one was sacking Kyler Murray three times in his first game in Arizona. That was a proud hometown moment.

HOW DID YOU TRANSITION FROM FOOTBALL TO REAL ESTATE?

I always knew football wouldn’t last forever. Seeing my dad’s career end made me realize early on that I needed a plan. I started investing in real estate while I was still in the league, so by the time I retired, I didn’t have to start from scratch. I was already set up.

WHAT’S YOUR MAIN FOCUS NOW IN REAL ESTATE?

I’m a private lender and investor. I lend to people doing real estate projects, helping them scale their businesses while also building my own portfolio. I’m really hands-on, especially in Scottsdale and Arcadia.

THREE LESSONS FOOTBALL TAUGHT YOU THAT APPLY TO REAL ESTATE?

1. Relationships matter. Who you know and how you treat people is everything.

2. Work ethic. No one will outwork me—whether on the field or in real estate.

3. Play the long game. Just like in football, success in real estate isn’t overnight. It’s about consistency and strategy.

YOU’VE ALSO WRITTEN TWO BOOKS. WHAT’S YOUR LATEST ONE ABOUT?

Real Estate Side Hustle is for high-net-worth individuals who want to build wealth through real estate while still focusing on their careers. It’s about creating financial security without having to give up your main profession.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO INVESTORS IN TODAY’S MARKET?

It’s tough right now, but great deals are still out there. Be intentional, make offers, and build relationships. If you’re a working professional, use your income to get financing and think long-term. Buying a property in Paradise Valley today might just break even in cash flow, but in five years, it’ll be worth a lot more. It’s about positioning yourself for the future.

IS HELPING OTHER ATHLETES TRANSITION INTO INVESTING A BIG FOCUS FOR YOU?

Absolutely. Pro athletes make a lot of money fast, but that money has to last a lifetime. I want to bridge the gap—taking what I’ve learned from financial experts and making it relevant to athletes so they can build wealth beyond the game. I’m working with pro athlete communities, mentoring players, and speaking at investment events to share this knowledge.

From Trash to Treasure: Zachary Kepes Takes Over HGTV

While Devon Kennard built his wealth through football and strategic investing, he’s relied on pal Zachary Kepes to help navigate the real estate game.

Zachary, a master of turning Phoenix’s most distressed properties into profitable investments, takes viewers behind the scenes of his HGTV show,  From Trash to Treasure, where he transforms forgotten homes into high-value assets. Here’s what he shared about the wild world of house flipping.

YOU STARTED ON WALL STREET—WHAT DREW YOU TO REAL ESTATE?

Stocks and equities are controlled by institutions, but real estate? That’s where you can take control. I love that I can see, touch, and influence an investment in a way you just can’t with the stock market.

WHAT SETS YOUR INVESTMENT STRATEGY APART?

I focus on distressed properties—hoarder houses, foreclosures, abandoned properties. I buy them, remodel them with my team, stabilize them, and either rent them out or sell them. My goal is long-term passive income. Owning one luxury home in the Valley is great, but owning ten cash-flowing properties in Phoenix is how you really build wealth.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR HGTV SHOW, “TRASH TO TREASURE.”

A talent scout saw what I was doing and pitched me for a show. A lot of real estate TV is staged, but what we do is the real deal. We walk into homes untouched—sometimes with 45 forgotten dogs, hoarder junk, and just unimaginable conditions— and turn them into something amazing. We’re revitalizing communities, one property at a time.

CAN YOU TAKE US BEHIND THE SCENES?

TV is a whole different world! It’s fast-paced, but I love it. We’re filming right here in the Valley, in real neighborhoods, making a real impact. It’s rewarding when neighbors thank us for turning an eyesore into something beautiful.

HOW DO YOU AND DEVON WORK TOGETHER?

Devon is building his lending business, and I have a ton of people looking to finance deals. I introduce him to investors, and he connects me with deals. It’s a win-win.

The Future of Luxury Aviation

TRENDS, EXCLUSIVITY, AND INNOVATION IN PRIVATE JETS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Private aviation is more than just a mode of transport—it’s a statement of efficiency, exclusivity, and unparalleled luxury. The world of high-net-worth individuals and corporate executives continues to evolve, with demand for bespoke aircraft reaching new heights. Whether it’s a Gulfstream G700, a fully customized Bombardier Global 7500, or a technologically advanced Praetor 600, private jets remain the ultimate asset in luxury travel.

As the president of  Hopkinson Luxury Aircraft Sales, a Scottsdale-based aircraft acquisition and sales firm, I work with Fortune 500 companies, highnet-worth individuals, and aviation enthusiasts to help them secure and personalize their aircraft. Here are the trends shaping the industry today and the future of private aviation.

The Most Coveted Private Jets in the World

Private jets are defined by their performance, range, and comfort. The Phenom 300E continues to dominate the light jet category with its sleek design, fuel efficiency, and versatility. Meanwhile, the Praetor 500 and 600 are highly sought after in the super mid-size segment, offering stand-up six-foot cabins and transcontinental range. Historically, the Challenger 3500 has led in volume, but demand is growing for jets that can travel coast-to-coast or across the Atlantic without refueling.

At the ultra-high-end, wide-body, long-range aircraft like the Gulfstream G500/ G600 and Dassault Falcon 6X are setting new benchmarks in capability and comfort. These jets are so exclusive that pre-owned inventory is scarce, with wait times stretching beyond two years. The Falcon 6X and upcoming 10X, with their unprecedented 6’6” cabin height, redefine spaciousness in private aviation.

The Shift in Celebrity & Billionaire Jet Ownership

Luxury aviation has always been a playground for the ultra-wealthy, but recent years have seen celebrities and billionaires upgrade their aircraft for even greater range and sophistication. Michael Jordan’s transition from a Gulfstream 550 to a 650ER reflects this trend, as does Kim Kardashian’s acquisition of the same model. Meanwhile, Kylie Jenner owns a Global 7500, the pinnacle of long-range private jets.

With the arrival of the Gulfstream G700, figures like Oprah Winfrey and the Fertitta brothers are expected to make the leap into the next generation of luxury aviation, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in private travel.

The Sustainability Shift in Private Aviation

The aviation industry is under increasing scrutiny for its environmental impact, and luxury jets are no exception. The adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is growing, and private jets continue to lead in technological advancements that improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. These innovations aren’t just about reducing emissions—they also enhance range, allowing aircraft to reach new destinations without refueling.

Outside of cutting-edge military aircraft, today’s private jets are the most advanced machines in the sky, blending technology, performance, and sustainability like never before.

Customization: The Art of Personalization in Private Jets

Owning a private jet is about more than just speed and range—it’s about creating a bespoke, flying sanctuary. The level of customization available today is staggering, from rare wood veneers and designer textiles to state-of-the-art entertainment systems and immersive lighting.

Some of the most extravagant requests I’ve seen include:

• Fully equipped hideaway bars for onboard mixology

• Advanced soundproofing and lower cabin altitudes to combat jet lag

• Starlink satellite connectivity for seamless, high-speed internet

• In-flight showers—a game-changer for arriving refreshed after long-haul flights

CONTINUED >

Why Private Jets Are the Ultimate Status Symbol

Private jets give their owners control over time. Unlike any other asset, an aircraft eliminates inefficiencies in travel, allowing direct access to locations that commercial airlines simply don’t serve.

A private jet is not just about exclusivity; it’s a tool that enables high achievers to maximize their productivity, whether by holding meetings midflight or simply arriving at a destination well-rested and ready for business.

The Competition for Exclusive Aircraft

Unlike limited-edition supercars or rare watches, private jets rarely go out of style. But for true aviation aficionados, the rarest jets are meticulously restored warbirds or historical aircraft that tell a unique story.

For those in the market for something brand new, custom interiors and exterior paint jobs have become the ultimate personalization flex. Some prefer to make a bold statement with vibrant colors and unique branding, while others opt for understated, stealth wealth designs that offer the ultimate discretion.

What’s Next for Luxury Aviation?

Looking ahead, the demand for private jets will continue to be driven by efficiency, speed, and connectivity. Advances in fuel efficiency and materials will allow for even greater range, while high-speed connectivity will transform in-flight experiences, making it possible to seamlessly work and stream entertainment at 40,000 feet.

Since the pandemic, demand for private aviation has soared, with more individuals and businesses opting for private travel over commercial airlines. While flight hours have slightly declined in 2024, global demand remains far higher than pre-pandemic levels. The driving factor? Commercial airline disruptions and limited destination options, pushing more high-net-worth individuals toward private jet ownership.

Fractional Ownership vs. Full Ownership

Private jet ownership is not a one-size-fits-all investment. The decision comes down to flight hours and travel frequency:

• Under 50 hours per year: Charter is the best option.

• 50–100 hours per year: Fractional ownership (shared jet access) may make sense.

• 100+ hours per year: Full ownership becomes more practical, offering complete flexibility and customization. For those who fly over 150 hours annually, full ownership is typically the best solution, with some travelers opting to own a primary jet while chartering larger aircraft for international trips.

A CONVERSATION WITH ACTOR JACOB LAVAL

For Autism Awareness Month, we sat down with young star of “The Unbreakable Boy”

At just 16, Jacob Laval is making waves in Hollywood and beyond. From  8-Bit Christmas to his Broadway debut in  The Rose Tattoo with Marisa Tomei, he now stars in Lionsgate’s The Unbreakable Boy, a true story about a boy on the autism spectrum with brittle bone disease. With credits across HBO, Netflix, and theater, Jacob brings heart, humor, and authenticity to every role.

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, we caught up with the rising star to talk about his journey, the challenges of this role, and what’s next.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE HIGH SCHOOL AND A GROWING ACTING CAREER?

Auditions aren’t as frequent because I’m either too young or too old for certain roles. So, I have plenty of time to focus on school. My teachers are really supportive.

FAVORITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL?

Right now, I’d say AP World.

WHAT WAS YOUR INTRODUCTION TO ACTING?

At eight years old, I really wanted a job. I started with extra work (background acting), and eventually got an agent. I quickly knew this was something I wanted to do.

DO YOU SEE YOURSELF ACTING FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE?

I love acting, but I’m open to finding something else I love just as much in the future.

BEFORE ACTING, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

Sometimes I wanted to be president, sometimes I wanted to play baseball for the Yankees.

FAVORITE YANKEES PLAYER?

Aaron Judge, obviously.

YOU’VE WORKED ON BROADWAY, TV, AND FILM. HOW DO THEY COMPARE?

When you’re performing live, you can’t mess up—people pay a lot of money for tickets. On a film set, if something goes wrong, you just do another take. I’d say Broadway is more stressful, but it also taught me discipline.

YOU STARRED IN 8-BIT CHRISTMAS ... WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?

So much fun. It’s about a kid in the 80s who will do anything to get a Nintendo Entertainment System for Christmas. My character, Conor Stump, was kind of the comic relief—he ate erasers and didn’t care what anyone thought of him.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE NEWLY DEBUTED  THE UNBREAKABLE BOY . IN YOUR OWN WORDS, WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT?

It follows Austin LeRette, a boy with autism and brittle bone disease, and how his family navigates their struggles together. His parents face incredible challenges, but Austin’s joyful outlook on life transforms everyone around him. The movie is about resilience, love, and seeing the good in difficult situations.

HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR THE ROLE OF AUSTIN?

I had to memorize a lot of lines, including a Jack Nicholson monologue from  A Few Good Men . Beyond that, I really had to understand Austin’s personality—his optimism, his quirks, and the way he sees the world.

DID YOU GET TO MEET THE REAL AUSTIN?

He messaged me on Instagram before we started filming. Then, he and his family visited the set- so special! It helped me understand him on a deeper level.

HOW DID YOU BALANCE THE EMOTIONAL WEIGHT OF THE ROLE WHILE STILL PORTRAYING AUSTIN’S JOY?

Austin goes through so much—he’s hospitalized, he faces bullying—but he remains incredibly positive. I had to make sure those darker moments were real, so that his optimism felt even more powerful.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN BULLIED, IN REAL LIFE?

Yes, I was bullied when I was younger. I never really learned their stories, which I regret now. But looking back, there was one kid in particular who was especially mean to me, and I later realized he had a tough home situation. He moved around a lot, and I can understand now that maybe he felt like he had to be mean to others. It doesn’t excuse what happened, but I think people act out for reasons we don’t always see. That experience taught me a lot about compassion—sometimes the people who hurt you are hurting themselves.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT AUTISM THROUGH THIS ROLE?

I learned just how broad the autism spectrum really is. Austin is talkative and outgoing, but some autistic kids don’t speak at all. There’s no one way to define autism, and that’s an important message.

SHINING A LIGHT ON Autism

HOW THE GENTRY FOUNDATION IS TRANSFORMING AUTISM DIAGNOSES IN ARIZONA

After sitting down with Jacob Laval, the talented teen bringing an autistic character to life on the big screen, we wanted to explore how autism care and early intervention are making an impact right here in the Valley. To gain deeper insight, we spoke with Dr. Joseph A. Gentry, CEO & Executive Director of The Gentry Foundation, a leading advocate for early autism diagnosis and support.

April is Autism Awareness Month: Why Does Early Diagnosis Matter?

The urgency of early autism diagnosis cannot be overstated. Currently, 1 in 36 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a significant increase from 1 in 150 in 2000. This rise is largely due to increased awareness, expanded diagnostic criteria, and improved screening practices.

“The urgency of early autism diagnosis cannot be overstated. Currently, 1 in 36 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).”

Despite these advances, the average age of diagnosis in the U.S. is still 5 years old, and in Arizona, it’s 4.5 years. However, research shows that intervening before age 3 can dramatically improve a child’s communication, social, and cognitive skills. The earlier a child receives intervention, the greater their potential for positive long-term outcomes.

Autism is also four times more common in boys than girls, but recent studies indicate that more females are being recognized and diagnosed, as their symptoms can present differently. The growing awareness of these differences is helping to close the gender gap in diagnoses.

Ultimately, early identification and intervention provide children with ASD the best opportunity to develop crucial life skills and lead fulfilling lives.

What inspired you to start The Gentry Foundation?

My wife, Sarah, and I founded The Gentry Foundation in 2016 after witnessing the long wait times—often 12 to 18 months—for low-income families to access autism evaluations. Given the proven benefits of early intervention, we wanted to create a solution that would allow these children to receive a diagnosis earlier and begin services sooner. We reached out to our colleagues and built a network of providers willing to conduct evaluations at a reduced rate, making the process faster and more accessible.

What types of programs do you offer?

Our mission is to lower the average age of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses in Arizona. Currently, the average age is around 4.5 years, but our goal is to reduce that to under 3 years. To achieve this, we raise funds to provide scholarships for low-income families, covering the cost of diagnostic evaluations. We also collaborate with local agencies to identify high-need areas and improve early detection efforts.

Who does the foundation primarily serve, and how do you measure its impact?

We focus on low-income families across Arizona, prioritizing those in the Phoenix Metro Area. While large-scale data collection on diagnosis age is infrequent, we track our impact by following up on every scholarship awarded. In 2023, we launched the Parent Liaison Program, pairing families with trained advocates who provide guidance on navigating services, ensuring children receive early intervention as quickly as possible.

Karrin Taylor Robson’s notMYkid Mission

Meet notMYkid’s 25th Anniversary Gala Co-Chairs

“I care deeply about Arizona’s future,” Karrin says. “Supporting notMYkid is another way to make sure the next generation has the support they need to succeed.”

For 25 years, notMYkid has provided life-changing mental health support, addiction prevention, and intervention programs for Arizona youth. Now, as the organization marks a milestone year, two powerhouse women—Karrin Taylor Robson and Sara Ward—are leading the charge.

“When you’re asked to help and you can, you just do it,” Karrin says.

And that’s exactly what she and Sara are doing. As Co-Chairs of notMYkid’s 25th Anniversary Gala, they’re also spearheading a $5 million Legacy Campaign to expand services, retire debt, and ensure the organization’s future.

For Sara Ward, a respected business leader and philanthropist, the cause is just as personal. With a track record of serving on 25+ nonprofit boards, her deep commitment to Arizona’s youth is fueling the fundraising success behind this transformational effort.

“Sara is relentless in making sure we have the resources to continue changing lives for years to come,” says notMYkid co-founder Debbie Moak.

At the heart of this effort is an urgent reality: Arizona’s kids are struggling.

• 88% of youth who participated in notMYkid programs reported they would not vape if offered, thanks to the education they received.

• The average age a child first experiments with drugs is just 12 years old—often before parents even suspect a problem.

• 1 in 3 teens struggles with anxiety, depression, or other mental health challenges, yet many suffer in silence without access to proper care.

• Suicide remains the second leading cause of death among Arizona youth aged 10-24.

These numbers highlight the critical need for prevention, education, and early intervention—the foundation of notMYkid’s mission.

“Our kids are suffering today at a rate that’s unacceptable,” Karrin says. “Childhoods are being cut short before they’ve even begun.”

Since founding notMYkid 25 years ago, Debbie and Steve Moak have built a lifeline for more than three million youth and families. As they prepare to retire, they leave behind a legacy of hope, resilience, and action—one that Karrin and Sara are determined to continue.

“Steve and Debbie took a challenge in their own home and turned it into a lifeline for Arizona families,” Sara says.

With a $1 million fundraising goal, every ticket, sponsorship, and donation directly supports notMYkid’s mission expanding critical services.

THE Heart OF THE Game

As someone who grew up with a disabled aunt and a family who loves baseball, being invited by the Miracle League of Arizona as the exclusive media partner for Savannah Bananas Day was an honor and privilege.

With two of my three boys by my side, we spent the morning volunteering and witnessing something truly special: the magic of inclusion, compassion, and the pure joy of playing ball. Watching my sons interact with Miracle League players reminded me that sports are more than just games—they are unifying, transformative, and a testament to the power of community.

For those unfamiliar, the Miracle League of Arizona provides a safe and supportive baseball experience for children, teens, and adults with disabilities. From its fully accessible field to the unwavering commitment of volunteers, this league isn’t just about the sport—it’s about belonging. Players as young as four can step up to the plate, and with 20+ different teams tailored to varying skill levels—including a competitive division for more advanced athletes—everyone has a place in the game.

Adding to the joy of the day was the presence of the Savannah Bananas, the viral baseball sensation known for their over-thetop antics, high-energy performances, and fan-first approach to the game. But beyond the entertainment, they value giving back.

One of the Bananas’ standout players, Reese Alexiades—aka “Superman”—shared his thoughts on the experience and why Miracle League events hold a special place in his heart.

A Morning with the Miracle League and the Savannah Bananas

HOW DID YOU END UP PLAYING FOR THE BANANAS?

I was playing independent ball in 2023, won MVP of my league, and they reached out to me. I went to a tryout, did well, and it was an opportunity I just couldn’t turn down.

WHAT MAKES BANANA BALL SO UNIQUE?

It’s not your typical baseball game. It’s turned up to 10—it’s a full-on party. You’re guaranteed to see something you’ve never seen before. Maybe a dancing umpire, a guy on stilts, or a crazy backflip catch. It’s all about making the fans feel part of something special.

HOW DO YOU FEEL VOLUNTEERING WITH THE MIRACLE LEAGUE OF ARIZONA?

It means everything. I went to my first Miracle League event a few years ago, and now I sign up as quickly as I can when they invite us. It’s about giving back, making kids smile, and remembering why we love this game in the first place.

WHY DO THEY CALL YOU SUPERMAN?

First day here, they said I looked like Clark Kent, and they asked if I wanted to wear a cape. I said absolutely. And now, I just own it.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS?

Still doing this. Still making an impact. Still having fun.

Get Involved

The Miracle League of Arizona offers year-round baseball for athletes ages 4 to 99 with physical, learning, or behavioral special needs. With participation up 32% and 100+ new athletes each year, the league needs volunteers, coaches, and Game Day Buddies. miracleleagueaz.com

Benefitting Gigi's Playhouse

Derby-day glamour, live entertainment, and high-stakes auction bidding—all benefiting a life-changing cause. While guests revel in the excitement of “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” the heart of this event lies in its mission: supporting GiGi’s Playhouse Phoenix, a transformational nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals with Down Syndrome through free educational, therapeutic, and career-readiness programs.

“The mission of GiGi’s Playhouse is to change the way the world views a Down Syndrome diagnosis, ensuring that children and adults with intellectual disabilities have access to the resources, confidence, and opportunities they deserve,” says Kimberly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in every 700 babies in the United States is born with Down Syndrome, making it the most common chromosomal condition. However, many individuals with Down Syndrome still face limited access to tailored support and development programs.

“GiGi’s Playhouse Phoenix serves over 1,000 families and provides more than 12,000 annual program hours completely free of charge, with most of its programs being volunteer-supported.”

The Playhouse offers essential early intervention programs, literacy and math tutoring, motor skill development, and career training to help individuals with Down Syndrome thrive from childhood through adulthood. By ensuring that these resources remain accessible, GiGi’s Playhouse fosters a community where children and families feel celebrated and empowered.

“Every child deserves to be seen for their potential, not their limitations. This event allows us to bring that vision to life while celebrating for a cause.”

Funds raised at this year’s Derby event will directly benefit GiGi’s Playhouse Phoenix, providing educational tools, individualized learning opportunities, and therapeutic resources that enhance motor and speech skills. It will also strengthen the Playhouse’s mission to create a supportive environment where families feel valued and included.

“Despite their capabilities, 80 percent of adults with Down Syndrome remain unemployed, a statistic that GiGi’s Playhouse is working to change by offering career-readiness programs and job training.”

Research has shown that early intervention programs significantly improve language development, motor skills, and social engagement—equipping individuals with Down Syndrome with the tools they need to build confidence and independence.

“This is more than a day at the races—it’s an investment in our community.”

Experts Weigh In: Essential Insights on Mortgages, Private Lending & Estate Planning

Wealth & Financial Strategies

What key mortgage trends are you seeing in 2025, and how do they impact high-net-worth buyers?

The Federal Reserve’s “higher for longer” stance on interest rates continues to hold steady, driven by a resilient economy, strong employment figures, and inflation that remains above the Fed’s target range. As a result, elevated mortgage rates are likely to persist. However, high-net-worth buyers have navigated this environment with greater ease, as luxury real estate transactions increasingly involve cash purchases, reducing the impact of interest rates on decision-making. The luxury home market has remained strong and is expected to grow further as borrowing costs gradually decrease, allowing high-net-worth individuals to leverage bank financing more effectively.

Private banking presents another strategic advantage for affluent buyers. Banks prioritize asset relationships and often offer mortgage rate discounts in exchange for a broader banking relationship. It’s common to see interest rate reductions between 0.25% and 0.50% for clients who transfer assets, which can result in substantial savings when borrowing large sums. While not all investment banks offer direct mortgage financing, most have established relationships with mortgage lenders, providing high-net-worth clients with access to competitive lending options.

What are key differences between a will and a trust, and which is best for business owners or high net worth individuals?

Choosing the right estate plan is extraordinarily important.  A will is a legal document that outlines how your assets should be distributed upon your death, but it must go through probate if it is above the Arizona probate limit, which can be a lengthy and public process. Unlike a will, a trust is a legal instrument which, if properly drafted and funded, can bypasses probate, offering privacy, greater control over how and when assets are distributed and other legal protections for its creators and beneficiaries.

For business owners or high-net-worth individuals, a trust is often the preferred option because of its enhanced privacy, flexibility, and protections from potential creditors or legal claims. A living trust, for instance, allows for the seamless transition of business ownership, minimizing disruptions and potential estate taxes. Additionally, it can protect assets from being exposed to probate court proceedings, which can be both public and costly.

Ultimately, the choice between a will and a trust depends on your specific needs, but for those with significant assets or complex estates, a trust provides the greatest security and flexibility.

How is the growing demand for private lending evolving, and what advantages does it offer borrowers compared to traditional financing options?

Since the Global Financial Crisis, traditional banks have faced increasing regulations and capital requirements, making it more difficult to provide the financing they once did. Back in early 2023, we experienced additional instability in the banking sector, with a series of regional bank failures. This prompted regulators to reassess the integrity of the financial system and impose stricter capital requirements, further limiting borrowers’ access to certain types of credit.

Private lending markets, however, offer borrowers greater flexibility. Unlike traditional banks which are often slow-moving, highly regulated and bound by rigid credit processes, private lenders provide adaptable financing solutions. While private credit may come at a higher cost due to lenders’ capital structures, many borrowers appreciate the ability to establish direct relationships with their lenders. Nonbank lenders are often more responsive and willing to customize loan structures, making them an attractive alternative for those frustrated by the constraints of legacy banking institutions.

At the same time, investors seeking opportunities beyond public markets have fueled a growing demand for private credit. This alignment of investors searching for alternative yields and borrowers needing non-traditional financing, has driven significant growth in private lending.

Since 2009, Capital Fund has successfully bridged the financing gap for real estate investors, developers and builders. With accessible liquidity, quick closings and a commitment to reliability, we have built a strong reputation as a trusted hard money lender in the markets we serve.

FOUR ECONOMIC TRENDS SHAPING 2025

Insights from The Duffy Mathias Group

As this is the investing issue, The Duffy Mathais Group is committed to keeping our clients informed on what’s ahead. Our team at Baird Private Wealth Management breaks down four key economic trends to watch in 2025.

1. Artificial Intelligence: The rise of ChatGPT has spurred companies to explore AI’s potential to boost productivity and profitability. Investment options range from traditional technology companies (e.g., those that provide software applications capable of intelligent learning, coding, data analytics, etc.) to any industries looking to utilize AI as a productivity enhancer and problem-solver while decreasing the risk of human error (e.g., healthcare).

3. Deglobalization: Recent supply chain disruptions have led companies to consider near-shoring or onshoring operations as countries focus on greater self-reliance. We see opportunities in Energy and Materials companies that benefit from established operations, cybersecurity and traditional defense firms, and businesses with more domestic-focused revenues and inputs.

4. Cash Is King: Post-pandemic shifts in monetary policy are likely to keep interest rates elevated, inevitably consuming a greater share of corporate cash. Investments in companies that generate cash flow, manage it well, and return income to shareholders are prudent. Selffunding firms have a significant advantage against this backdrop.

2. Industrial Power Renaissance: The demand for power has surged due to AI, electric vehicles, and new manufacturing and data centers. Global data center electricity consumption is expected to more than double from 2022 to 2026. We favor investing in securities directly involved in creating sources of power and those benefiting from add-on impacts of increased power generation.

BETTER SLEEP, BREATHING & OVERALL HEALTH

Breathing may seem automatic, but how you breathe—through your nose or mouth—can have a significant impact on sleep, energy levels, and overall well-being.

Chronic nasal obstructions, such as a deviated septum, nasal valve collapse, or persistent congestion, can lead to poor sleep quality, snoring, and even contribute to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition affecting more than 25 million Americans. Studies show that up to 80% of individuals have some degree of septal deviation, often without realizing how much it affects their daily life.

“When nasal airflow is restricted, the body compensates with increased mouth breathing, which can disrupt oxygen intake, reduce sleep quality, and even impact facial development in children,” says Dr. Sam DeVictor, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon specializing in ENT at DeVictor Facial Plastic Surgery in Scottsdale.

Your nose isn’t just an airway—it’s a built-in filtration system. It warms, humidifies, and purifies the air before it reaches your lungs, optimizing oxygenation and protecting against allergens and pollutants. When nasal obstructions force mouth breathing, it can:

• Disrupt sleep quality – Nasal congestion increases the likelihood of moderate to severe sleep-disordered breathing by 1.8 times, making it harder to enter deep, restorative sleep.

• Reduce energy and focus – Poor oxygen intake can lead to daytime fatigue, memory issues, and decreased concentration.

• Exacerbate mental health conditions – Studies link chronic nasal obstruction to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and migraines.

Dr. Sam DeVictor

For those who struggle with persistent breathing issues, Dr. DeVictor says pinpointing the cause is the first step toward improvement.

• Deviated Septum – The cartilage dividing the nostrils is off-center, blocking airflow. Up to 80% of people have some degree of septal deviation.Solution: Septoplasty—a procedure to straighten the septum and improve breathing.

• Nasal Valve Collapse – Weak nasal sidewalls can cause airway obstruction, making breathing difficult.Solution: Nasal valve repair—reinforces nasal structures, restoring airflow and stability.

• Chronic Sinus Congestion – Persistent inflammation, often due to allergies or environmental triggers.Solution: A combination

of corticosteroids, allergy management, and, in some cases, sinus surgery may help.

Research shows that people with nasal obstructions are 4.39 times more likely to develop obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and cognitive decline. Correcting nasal airflow can significantly improve deep sleep cycles, energy levels, and even athletic performance.

“A successful rhinoplasty isn’t about creating a ‘plastic’ nose—it’s about reshaping in a way that complements a person’s natural features while improving airflow. Breathing well should always be the priority.”

DEAR DR. LEXI

Imagine if you or your sister, daughter, or friend found out they were pregnant...with TWINS! Everyone gets so excited anticipating the arrival of two bundles of joy that it can be easy to forget about the risks that come with a twin pregnancy.

Here are 3 important things to know about a twin pregnancy:

1. Carries a substantially higher risk of preterm labor, early delivery and cesarean

2. Increases the mother’s risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (like preeclampsia) and gestational diabetes

3. Not all twins are created equal, and some twin pregnancies need more frequent ultrasounds, especially when the twins share a placenta (what we call monochorionic)

AI & Law

How It’s Changing the Legal Landscape for Everyone

AI is transforming the legal world—streamlining cases, shaping claims, and redefining access to justice. Whether you’re hiring a lawyer or filing an insurance claim, AI is already at work. But is it simplifying the system or creating new challenges?

At Valley Injury Law, we’ve recovered over $25 million for Arizona accident victims in five years, witnessing AI’s power to streamline cases and improve accuracy. But with these advancements come ethical concerns— raising questions about bias, privacy, and the role of human judgment in law.

AI is already a silent player in many legal processes— whether you’re dealing with an insurance claim, signing a contract, or disputing a ticket.

For example, AI is now being used to:

• Predict settlement values in personal injury cases helping lawyers determine fair compensation before negotiating with insurance companies.

• Automate contract reviews—scanning thousands of legal documents in seconds to flag potential risks or missing clauses.

• Assess liability in accidents—AI can analyze police reports, medical records, and case law to determine how a case might play out.

• Speed up claims processing —some insurance companies now use AI to estimate damages and determine payouts.

For clients, AI speeds up cases and may reduce legal costs by automating research and paperwork. But the human element remains crucial—AI can’t argue, negotiate, or advocate for your best interests. Despite its benefits, AI isn’t perfect— and that’s where things get tricky.

• Bias in AI models: AI relies on past legal data, which means it can reinforce historical biases—leading to unfair case predictions or inaccurate assessments.

• Privacy concerns: Many AI systems store and analyze sensitive personal information, raising questions about data security and confidentiality.

• Over-reliance on automation: While AI can review contracts and summarize cases, it can’t replace critical thinking, negotiation skills, or courtroom advocacy.

AI enhances legal services but can’t replace human judgment, strategy, or empathy. While it reshapes the profession, it won’t replace lawyers—only redefine their role.

AI streamlines research and analysis, but only a lawyer can advocate, persuade, and navigate legal complexities.

For clients, this means choosing a lawyer who understands AI is now just as important as choosing one with trial experience. The best attorneys will integrate AI to improve efficiency while ensuring your case is handled with the expertise and personal attention it deserves. AI can speed up the legal process, but your best defense is still a knowledgeable, experienced lawyer.

An Investment in Paradise

Waikiki has long been synonymous with tropical luxury—a destination where golden sunsets, swaying palms, and the rhythmic sound of the ocean create an atmosphere of effortless relaxation. Now, with the grand debut of Ka La‘i Waikiki Beach, part of LXR Hotels & Resorts, travelers and investors alike have the opportunity to experience Waikiki like never before.

“We are thrilled to introduce LXR Hotels & Resorts to Hawaii with the debut of Ka La‘i Waikiki Beach,” says Danny Hughes, President, Americas, Hilton. “Hawaii has played an integral role in Hilton’s legacy, and we are honored to continue Conrad Hilton’s vision by bringing a new level of bespoke luxury to Waikiki.”

Located in the heart of Honolulu’s Beach Walk district, the property blends high-end hospitality with the comforts of home, making it more than just a luxury escape—it’s an investment in lifestyle, relaxation, and long-term value. Whether seeking a fivestar vacation experience or looking to own a piece of paradise, Ka La‘i offers both a premier getaway and a rare opportunity for property investment.

Unlike standard resorts, the resort provides the space, privacy, and amenities of a residence, making it the ideal destination for those who want to enjoy the luxuries of a five-star stay without sacrificing the conveniences of home.

Each of the 462 guest rooms and suites is designed with a residential feel, offering floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase breathtaking views of Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, and Fort DeRussy Park. Expansive lanai (balconies) invite guests to soak in Hawaii’s natural beauty, whether watching the sunrise over the ocean or enjoying an evening breeze with a cocktail in hand.

For travelers who crave the comforts of home while indulging in the grandeur of a luxury resort, Ka La‘i delivers:

• Fully equipped kitchens in suites and kitchenettes in studios

• In-suite washers and dryers for the ease of extended stays

• Deep soaking tubs to unwind after a day of exploring

• Pet-friendly accommodations, ensuring no family member is left behind

THE LUXURY OF KA LA‘I WAIKIKI BEACH

This seamless fusion of luxury and everyday convenience makes Ka La‘i ideal for multi-generational travelers, extended vacations, or those seeking a second home in Hawaii.

Beyond the serene accommodations, Ka La‘i Waikiki Beach’s location is unparalleled. Situated just steps from Waikiki Beach, guests have immediate access to some of the world’s most famous surfing, paddle boarding, and beachside relaxation. Meanwhile, Kalakaua Avenue— Hawaii’s most famous boulevard—offers a vibrant mix of high-end shopping, gourmet dining, and world-class entertainment, all within walking distance.

For those who prefer a more laid-back retreat, the infinity pool and expansive sundeck offer a sanctuary above the city’s energy.

Dining at Ka La‘i is more than just a meal—it’s an experience. Guests have access to exceptional culinary options, including:

• Wai‘olu Ocean Cuisine, the resort’s signature restaurant, showcasing fresh seafood and contemporary island flavors

• In-Yō Café, an intimate breakfast spot offering locally inspired morning favorites

• Poolside dining, where handcrafted cocktails and light bites complement the stunning infinity pool views

• In-suite professional chef services, allowing guests to enjoy custom gourmet meals in the comfort of their own space

To make your Hawaiian escape more permanent, Ka La‘i Waikiki Beach offers a rare opportunity: the ability to purchase units and invest in a premier vacation property.

Unlike traditional real estate, owning at Ka La‘i means enjoying the benefits of a five-star resort while having a personal retreat in one of the most sought-after locations in the world.

Ownership at Ka La‘i includes:

• Access to all resort amenities—from spa treatments to beach services

• Full-service concierge and housekeeping, ensuring a seamless experience

• Priority dining and wellness reservations, so owners always have the best of Waikiki at their fingertips

• The option to rent out the property when not in use, turning paradise into a potential revenue stream

Investing in Mental Health

For our Investing Issue, we’re highlighting one of the most crucial investments of all: mental health. In Arizona, help is just 10 seconds away thanks to Solari Crisis & Human Services, which operates the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline—a free, 24/7 resource available to anyone in need.

ARIZONA’S FREE LIFELINE FOR SUPPORT

With one in five Americans experiencing mental illness each year (NAMI), accessible support is more critical than ever. Half of all calls to Solari come from individuals seeking help for themselves, with concerns spanning anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and financial distress. And the impact is undeniable—75% of callers feel better after speaking with a crisis specialist and are able to remain in their home with a plan for next steps.

But Solari isn’t just investing in those who call for help—they’re also investing in their own people. Crisis work is demanding, so Solari prioritizes an “employee-first” culture to ensure those providing care are also supported. Onsite employees can decompress in dedicated “compassion rooms,” while remote staff have access to 24/7 mental health resources, wellness coaching, and burnout prevention programs.

“The work that is done at Solari is around the clock, and that means employees can become burnt out if not given the support and flexibility needed to enjoy their lives,” says Laboraex Abeita, Solari’s Manager of Marketing. “Prioritizing the health and wellbeing of employees has been shown to increase productivity, company loyalty, and overall success of company goals.”

This investment in well-being is essential. Research shows that untreated mental health challenges double the likelihood of unemployment, and financial stress triples the risk of anxiety or depression. Solari is breaking that cycle—one call, one connection, and one life-changing conversation at a time.

ROCK THE RUNWAY

PHOENIX FASHION WEEK’S TOP 40 MODEL SEARCH IS ON!

Every model starts somewhere, but not every model gets the training, exposure, and opportunities to turn their dreams into reality. That’s where Phoenix Fashion Week’s Top 40 Model Search comes in.

Returning on Sunday, April 27, 2025, this prestigious program is not just a competition—it’s a career accelerator for aspiring models looking to break into the fashion industry.

“Our program transforms aspiring models into industry-ready professionals, giving them real-world experience before they even hit the main stage,” says Brian Hill, Executive Director of Phoenix Fashion Week.

Each year, over 400 hopefuls audition, but only 40 models (10 male, 30 female) make the cut for an intensive four-month bootcamp designed to refine their runway skills, build confidence, and provide unmatched industry exposure.

Unlike traditional castings that only focus on looks, Phoenix Fashion Week invests in talent development, ensuring that every selected model receives:

• Professional runway and editorial posing training

• Exposure to top designers, photographers, and agencies

• Brand-building workshops, including social media growth

• A shot at becoming Male & Female Model of the Year—a title that comes with a modeling contract and major fashion campaign opportunities

Beyond the Runway: The Training & Industry Challenges

Over the summer, the selected Top 40 models go through five real-world fashion challenges, each designed to educate, push boundaries, and prepare models for high-level industry success.

“We teach models how to navigate castings, work with designers, and build a personal brand that lasts beyond Phoenix Fashion Week,” says Brian.

This program has led models to sign with agencies like Wilhelmina, The Agency Arizona, and Next Models and book national campaigns, magazine covers, and runway shows from L.A. to New York Fashion Week. Notably, Brittany Brown, a Top 40 alum, went onto compete on America’s Next Top Model.
