It took me a while to "dream up" a cover for our women’s issue. There are so many dynamic women in the Valley that I didn't want to choose just one. Therefore, I thought it would be neat to hand-select a few fierce females, spanning all generations, backgrounds and professions, and unite them for a killer photoshoot.

Our photoshoot was a blast. Some of the women not already having met left the shoot as newfound friends. It's a strong cover that encompasses the powerful and empowering magic of women supporting women. Included on our cover is a media mogul, famed Phoenix Mercury star, a real estate powerhouse, 90-yearold philanthropists, a jewelry-infused entrepreneur and a golf-playing queen of the green. Such a gamut!

This issue is saturated with awesome women balancing work, life, and philanthropy, many of whom also prioritize being a dedicated mom and loving wife.

As we celebrate our Ladies Issue, I am humbled and honored to be surrounded and supported by so many inspirational, relentless, intelligent and utterly fabulous females. In this issue, we asked some local ladies what fuels their fire... Here's hoping their inner flames will spark your personal blaze.

Us women tout numerous titles, and my most sacred is "mom." As a boy mom X3, I aim to instill in my sons that women can wear many hats; that we have superpowers beyond their wildest beliefs. That us mamas are tireless advocates for ourselves, our families, our community and our passions.

I would like to extend a happy Mother's Day to all the different types of moms reading this. Personally, I never knew how much love my heart could hold until my sons took over my soul.

Whether you are a birth mom, adoptive mom, step-mom, fill-in mom, stay-athome-mom, work-at-home-mom, mom who’s lost a child, or any other kind of mom, I see you and honor you.

Never forget that in the eyes and mind of your child, you are the best mom they could ever have.

Sophie Cunningham is a Phoenix Mercury fan favorite. Her claim to fame is flaunting spice on the court, showing young girls to embrace a feisty side.

BEFORE WE DIVE INTO YOUR AZ CELEB STATUS, LET’S TALK TIGERS. YOU MADE HISTORY AT MIZZOU AS THE COLLEGE’S ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER AND LEADER IN FREE THROWS. HOW DO YOU FEEL BEING A STAPLE OF COLUMBIA, MISSOURI?

I was born and raised in Columbia. It’s amazing playing a role in my family’s legacy at Mizzou; my grandpa played Mizzou football, as did my dad and uncle. My mom did track and field, my aunt played basketball, and so did me and my sister. To this day, my sister is my inspiration. Mizzou’s black and gold is in our blood.

I wanted to put Mizzou women’s basketball on the map and I think we got 8th in the nation.

I aim to instill hope in young girls that a blue-collar family can do big things.

YOU WERE DRAFTED TO THE MERCURY IN 2019, ARIZONA BECAME YOUR SECOND HOME, AND FANS IMMEDIATELY EMBRACED YOUR FEISTY SIDE. IN YOUR OWN WORDS, WHO IS “SPICY SOPHIE?”

I’m chill and like to have a good time. But there’s just something about being inside the lines of basketball where I flip a switch and become spicy.

However, at the end of the day, I like my spicy margaritas by the pool.

I credit our chefs, but I’m all for it.

I also think the word “spicy” is fitting for our Valley fans – it’s what Phoenix is all about. We’re a loving group, but don’t mess with us, right?

I always wanted to be a pro athlete and inspire the next generation.

Growing up, my family fed me immense confidence and I developed a strong sense that my athleticism would be my biggest superpower.

WHAT’S YOUR DAILY ROUTINE?

I train from 7a-11a at the same facility as the Suns which is cool because you get to create a bond with them.

During the day, I’ll nap or hang by the pool. Then, I work the Suns games.

THAT’S SO FUN YOU’RE PART OF THE SUNS’ BROADCAST TEAM DURING THE WNBA OFFSEASON! GIVE US SOME INSIGHT.

I get to work with Tom Chambers, who is amazing... but I gotta give it back to him because he likes to talk trash. And the rest of the guys are just as incredible.

Being a reporter is a fresh endeavor for mebeing thrown into the fire... but I love being on another side of basketball.

Plus, those men need a young, feisty girl sometimes.

WHAT’S YOUR CHEAT MEAL?

Donuts. And I’m not scared to throw down baby back ribs.

I’m down to earth and fun. From a fashion standpoint, this year people are going to be surprised because I have a stylist who might throw in pops of Barbie. I’m excited for my outfits.

Horseback riding, hiking and boating.

Playing among the world’s best athletes, you can’t get too high; you can’t get too low. I’ve learned to show up, be myself, smile and be grateful.

The court is where I feel most free. I have faith, so I just go out there and do my best. I play with emotion and expression.

I’ll stick with the spicy vibes...

One time, the ref didn’t call a foul and I had quite an encounter with the opponent. I’m no fighter, but got in her face because I don’t take disrespect.

It blew up on social media, but that’s not why I find it memorable. I love it because I stood my ground and showed people it’s okay to stand up for yourself, especially as a woman.

WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

An African safari, attending a symphony and to swim with sharks.

FINALLY, A QUESTION FROM MY SPORTS-OBSESSED 9-YEAROLD. WHEN YOU’RE ON THE COURT, DOES IT FEEL LIKE YOU’RE PLAYING AT RECESS ON THE PLAYGROUND?

I think there’s a bit more on the line than having fun at recess, but when we take the pressure off and act like we’re kids again, that’s when we play our best basketball.

STYLE WATCH:

Homegrown golfer Hailey Ostrom moved to Arizona after college to pursue going pro. According to the club-swinging superstar, her move to AZ was the best decision she ever made... but it was also a grind.

In order to fund chasing her dream job, Hailey worked three jobs - but things surely paid off.

I love the camera, so being a face for companies and competing on the Golf Channel is a total dream.

I remember when I signed with Nike (my dream sponsor) and was heading to Vegas to compete for the Golf Channel. I recall telling my dad, “Wow, I can’t believe this is all happening to me.” It will forever make me emotional reflecting on my path, as I was still working multiple jobs and slinging drinks on the beverage cart.

I don’t play with women’s golf clubs; I use men’s shafts. I encourage everyone to get fitted for clubs. Most women are capable of playing a men’s shaft or senior shaft club.

WHAT’S YOUR MENTAL GAME ON THE GREEN?

My mental game is my favorite part of my game. On the green, it’s important to have confidence when putting. It doesn’t matter if you have the world’s worst stroke, the ball can still find the hole. I visualize where I want the ball to roll, even mentally drawing a line as I stare at where I want the ball to roll over. Then, I picture the ball falling into the cup with perfect speed. From there, it’s just feel!

PROFESSIONAL GOLFER

Hailey Ostrom grew up playing golf. In fact, Hailey’s dad introduced her to the green, sawing a putter for her as soon as she could walk. Growing up in Bend, Oregon, the green was her playground; little Hailey would putt alongside her dad during his afternoon 9.

Eventually, Hailey played in COJGA (the Central Oregon Junior Golf Association), where her dad was president. He paved the (fair)way for her to fall in love with the sport and have a future going pro.

Hailey decided to pursue golf as a profession in college; that’s when she realized she wanted to be the best. She never made a lineup her freshman season and competed in the sixth position. The determined young woman hated that her score wouldn’t contribute to her team, so she made a promise to herself to never miss a lineup again. In typical Hailey fashion, she worked tirelessly all off-season and ended up coming into sophomore year as the number one player. She never missed a lineup again.

Always remember who you are. You don’t need to do what everyone else is doing, and if you’re doing it differently, that’s likely your key to success.

It doesn’t feel any different than it ever did before. People sometimes ask for a photo with me and I always think to myself, “I don’t know why anyone wants my picture.” However, I feel great honor that I have a voice in this industry and can help inspire people to pursue this career the same way I did.

When someone asks for a book recommendation, I always ask if they’ve read “The Nightingale,” by Kristin Hannah. The WWII tale of two French sisters will make you ‘ugly cry.’ Hannah’s immensely researched novels are told from the perspective of women who seem as real and complex as your sister or your best friend while navigating incredible obstacles during pivotal moments in history.

THE WOMEN

Hannah’s new novel begins on Coronado Island in 1965. It follows Frances “Frankie” McGrath who seeks both honor and adventure when she joins the Army Nurse Corps and deploys to Vietnam. Her journey through the traumas of war and return to a changed world makes this an irresistible read. Heartbreaking, hopeful, and powerful, this book reveals the reality of invisible women during Vietnam. The nurses, whose friendship is formed under fire, is a moving example of sisterhood.

An excellent companion to “The Women” is “The Great Alone.”

In 1998, Stacey Kole Berra scored the prestigious title of Miss Arizona USA. The memorable and meaningful experience propelled Stacey’s nationwide speaking career and professional path in media.

Stacey, wife to Rich Berra of the Johnjay & Rich Show, is the Executive Director of the Miss Arizona Scholarship Organization. Things have come full circle for the former beauty queen, now grooming girls to marry the importance of beauty-meets-brains.

“I have two teen sons, but every year I gain about 50 new daughters. It’s a blessing to work with the girls and witness their journey unfold.”

Every year, Stacey spearheads Arizona’s state pageant program ultimately determining which young woman will snag the title and compete in the nationwide Miss America competition.

“At its heart, Miss America — and by extension, Miss Arizona — is a scholarship program. Millions of dollars and in-kind scholarships are awarded.”

About 50 girls combined go after the Miss Arizona and Miss Arizona Teen titles, and Stacey says she looks for women who are personable, teachable, and motivated. They unite in June for Arizona’s annual competition; the girls partake in interviews, perform talents, and rock the runway in ball gowns. Once someone is crowned Miss Arizona, she preps for the national Miss America Teen or Miss America competitions, and Stacey’s team helps polish their skills, guide their wardrobe choices, and empowers their involvement in community service.

“I remember my dad waking me up singing, ‘There She Is, Miss America.’ I think it was woven into my DNA to compete. In my freshman year of college, I decided to give it a go. Surprisingly, I won on my first try,” said Gabriella Heinz, 24-year-old Miss Paradise Valley.

Gabriella Heinz is representing Paradise Valley in June’s competition with the hope of landing the national title.

“When I began competing, I was living paycheck-to-paycheck with no plan to pay for college and virtually no professional skills. In my second competition year, I learned that the Miss Arizona Organization provided a full-ride scholarship to candidates that place in the top 5. I made it my mission to do just that - my future depended on it. Lo and behold, I scored the opportunity to graduate college debt-free. Now, I spend my time evolving a supportive community for young women titled ‘She’s Got Moxie.’ Our goal is helping girls propel personal, professional, and financial power,” said Gabriella.

Gabriella credits people like Stacey for her exciting and fulfilling pageantry path and professional passions.

And Stacey credits her late father for being a guiding light.

“My dad was a world-famous illusionist named Andre Kole. He is best known for creating magical inventions and working with David Copperfield. (Yes, I know virtually all the secrets and was sawed in half all the time!) My ‘magic dad’ influenced me significantly on both his love of the stage and performing — which I implement every year when I produce the Miss Arizona three-night show — and he also impressed upon me the importance of faith. In a very real way, he charted the course of my life.”
