There's no place like home

Growing up in the quaint town of Los Gatos in the heart of Silicon Valley, California, I was surrounded by techy multi-millionaires with their million-dollar mansions- grandiose and picturesque.

As a young kid in a middle class family, I was raised in a lovely middle class house in a great neighborhood. When I was 11, my parents got divorced, and my mom and I moved quite a bit, downscaling to an apartment. With that being said, our modest and humble abode was always the hot spot and hangout. Even my friends with tennis courts and pools preferred our little space for sleepovers. It was comfortable. It was inviting. It was warm and homey. In other words, it was home.

With this issue being focused on HOME, it's important to keep in mind that home is not only a place, but a feeling. Being raised among affluence, I got a taste of how amazing life could be under a big roof. However, I never felt shortsighted. I always felt happy going home.

It is with immense honor that I got the opportunity to step inside Randy Johnson's house for our cover story. With Randy's great baseball success, I learned that his photos are the crown jewel of his hallways. In fact, not noted in the article, he mentioned to me his most prized possessions are not baseball paraphernalia; rather, two framed photographs he took and has carried with him throughout the years.

Dubbed “The Big Unit,” Randy Johnson consistently threw pitches exceeding 100 mph. The 2001 World Series winner and infamous Diamondback has solidified his place in baseball history, but his talents go beyond the field.

Johnson’s true love is photography, and we scored an exclusive interview at home with Randy, walking the halls of his house lined with pictures so dear to his heart.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, HOW DID IT FEEL WATCHING YOUR DIAMONDBACKS IN THE WORLD SERIES?

I got to bring my son to the game, and we were just hanging father-and-son, the way it should be. There are bright things ahead for the Diamondbacks. It’s a young, talented team.

AS A KID, DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO PLAY PRO BALL?

My idol was left-handed pitcher Vida Blue. When I was young, I would tape a target to our garage, grab a tennis ball and glove, and throw the ball at my imaginary strike zone. I’d pretend to be Blue, doing his big-high-leg-kick.

I remember playing Little League and it was League Day where we got to walk the field. Having grown up in the Bay Area, I strolled the field of the Oakland Coliseum thinking it would be so cool to play pro.

This memory came full circle when I was, in fact, playing pro with the Seattle Mariners. One day we were up against the A’s in Oakland and I recall warming up before the game. Suddenly, I saw many kids walk by me, and it just so happened to be League Day. I watched as the kids paraded the field with big dreams, the same way I once did... and in the same place. Probably the best moment of my baseball career.

I went there on a baseball scholarship and studied photojournalism. I worked for the Daily Trojan , the college newspaper.

FOLLOWING YOUR BASEBALL RETIREMENT, YOU REVISITED YOUR LOVE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY. SINCE THEN, YOU’VE BECOME AN AVID PHOTOGRAPHER, TRAVELING THE WORLD, AND EXERCISING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC PASSION. WHAT ARE SOME MEMORABLE MOMENTS BEHIND THE CAMERA?

I loved shooting in Ethiopia, staying in a tent and immersing myself in the peoples’ way of life. Like them, I bathed in the river.

I took a photo of three men standing on rocks in the river holding guns (they’re always prepared in case of a threat). That’s what photojournalism is; a picture that tells a story. And to tell their story visually, I got to experience it. It’s humbling.

I’ve also photographed concerts like Billy Joel and Elton John.

Johnson’s travels have allowed him to photograph an array of wildlife like lions, gorillas, and his favorite- elephants. He went to a refuge in Kenya witnessing some of the biggest elephants in the world, scoring a fantastic photo of an egret perched on an elephant tusk with storm clouds in the background.

With Spring Training, we’re once again graced with the magic of America’s Favorite Pastime. Baseball is both dramatic and poetic, and the experience on the sidelines is equally powerful... even when the players are kids.

“This is a memoir about one season of Little League baseball that I watched my oldest son play with my dad after my brother died of cancer at age 47,” says Arizona author and TV personality Teresa Strasser of her book, “Making it Home: Life Lessons from a Season of Little League.”

In this deeply personal story, Teresa chronicleswith heart and humor- how she and her dad Nelson “turned the bleachers into our own personal grief group of two.”

Through the course of the season and her book, dad emerges as a hero, able to manage both grief and joy. While many say grief is a process of several stages, Teresa says for them it was three: the draft, the regular season, and the post season.

Teresa is in talks to adapt “Making It Home” into a TV series, and if she could draft the actors to portray the father-daughter duo, it would be Natalie Portman and Henry Winkler.

The 2023 fears of “how high will they go” appear to be gone. Most forecasters say rates will dip towards the end of the year. There’s obviously outside factors that can disrupt that, but we’ve likely peaked and have started to stabilize in the 6% range. A large number of potential homebuyers are still locked in great interest rates and not looking to make a housing change until rates go down.

Have a plan and be prepared. Know the current rates and lending environment. Take the time to meet with your lender, banker or broker to gain a true understanding of the cost and payments of what you want to do.

Mark Candelaria is destined for stardom thanks to his return on The Design Network. The Scottsdalebased renowned architecture firm is playing center stage in a debut series called EXTRA-vagant Spaces on the streaming TV network.

“Mark is a creative visionary when it comes to creating memorable and incredibly special homes. When we discussed this with our host, there was an immediate synergy with the two,” said Erin Zelle, The Design Network’s Head of Programming.

The 6-episode series is hosted by designer Kelli Ellis taking viewers inside mind-blowing properties alongside Mark Candelaria, our local esteemed architect. Showcasing indoor shooting galleries, bespoke bowling alleys, revolving closets, putting greens and personal spas, houses featured are simply swoonworthy. One of the most extravagant homes was a 64,000 sf property with a racquetball court, hair salon, massage room, observatory, and a horse barn topped with a riding arena and skybox.

“Mark and Kelli made filming fun! If there’s a bowling alley, they’ll bowl. They’re up for anything,” said Erin.

According to Mark Candelaria, the founding partner of Candelaria Design, they filmed one house a day for 2-3 hours each.

“It was a fun week even thought I’d still like to lose 15 pounds, but we all know the camera does that to you,” he said.

Each property presented a new and exciting story; one home was built into the side of a mountain, where Mark dives into the logistics and planning that went into the locational challenge.

“Arizona’s views, weather and stunning landscapes are the perfect backdrop for this special series.”

“These projects take years to create and build, so it’s rewarding to see the final product. It’s like cooking an amazing meal, which of I love to do; enjoying that final moment when you bring the dish to the table and everyone gives you the accolades for your hard work and creativity. It’s wonderful,” reflects Mark.
