Happy New Year!
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Tammy Fellows | tammy.fellows@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Welcome to 2023! I don’t know about you, but there’s something about a new year that feels like the first day of school to me. It’s a clean slate ahead that’s filled with possibilities. I don’t make resolutions (I mean, how many times can I promise myself that I’m going to finally go to the gym or stop eating desserts or that I’m really going to make time to clean out those closets?!), but I do take time to stop and reassess. It’s like those reminders I set in my phone that remind me to do something … oh, it’s a new year? Ding! Time to do XYZ. Often, the turning of a new year is when I remind myself to be more mindful in my actions and not get so caught up in just my day-to-day to-do list. If you’re like me, you’ll enjoy some of the health and mindfulness-focused stories we have in this issue. Learn about Hollywood’s best-kept secret to losing weight, and yoga poses that boost your energy. Meet an architect who collects the famous Soleri Cosanti Original windbells, as well as the board chair for the Fiesta Bowl. I hope you enjoy this issue and wish you the very best in 2023!

letter from the PUBLISHER
To new beginnings … Ah … January! For many, New Year’s resolutions are set; goals, aspirations, self-improvement, and change are the focus. For me, it’s more than that. I see myself and all of us really, constantly evolving. There is no appropriate time or need to wait to start your shift. Jan. 1 is simply when people tend to choose it. I have something for you—it’s a gift that I received from my grocery store cashier, Marlene. One day in December last year, I stood in her line as I had many times before, and she suddenly said to me (as I gazed in autopilot), “Do you make New Year’s resolutions?” I said back to her, “You know … honestly, I don’t. They never seem to work out for me, and then I just feel disappointed in myself.” She responded back, “I have something for you.” I waited in anticipation of what she would say next. “It’s a book. It’s called ‘One Word.’ Have you heard of it?” I replied, “No, what is that?” She begins to explain in her own words the concept of the book, which in a nutshell, is really about finding one word (actually, the word finds you) that resonates with you for a whole year. It’s what you live by; it’s what you pay attention to in all that you do on a daily basis. I was fascinated and thanked her for her insight, as it made so much sense to me. I immediately got to my car, loaded up my groceries, pulled up Amazon, and bought the book. When it arrived, I soaked it up like a sponge. It’s a very quick, digestible, and easy read. The word that found me was “discover.” For all of 2022, I had this word saved as my home screen photo on my phone, so I saw it multiple times each day. I realized that by integrating just this one word for an entire year—the things I learned and opened myself up to—my growth was exponential! I share this with you only to give you a new way to look at change and growth. It may not be as simple as setting a goal and achieving it. Sometimes you have to look at the whole picture and live it every day. I hope you all have a wonderful new year, and may you live a life that is in constant evolution. Be grateful, be kind, and live well, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

HOLLYWOOD’S BEST-KEPT
Secret to Weight
LOOKING GREAT AND LOSING
Every great company has a memorable origin story, and Sunfare is no exception. “It all started with a phone number I found in the office trash can,” recalls John Stewart, Sunfare’s CEO and co-founder. It was 1997 and Stewart was running a small nutrition consulting business in Los Angeles with Sunfare President and Co-founder Carl Ferro. When he learned the number had been discarded with no follow-up, he made a return call and found himself talking to Kimberly di Bonaventura, then wife of Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who was the president of feature films for Warner Bros. She wanted someone to make healthy meals for Lorenzo and his friend, Joel Silver. “Even though it was something we didn’t do—actually making and delivering the meals, which is now our entire model—it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” offers Ferro. And when di Bonaventura and Silver both enjoyed the food and slimmed down, news of the fledgling company spread quickly through the industry. “I got a page early on from someone named Sandy Bullock. When I reached out to speak with her, only then did I realize it was actually CONTINUED >

Sandra Bullock. Our sixth client! Mind blown,” says Stewart, laughing. From day one and that first fateful call, Sunfare has been rooted in healthy eating—a natural progression from the nutrition consulting background already held by the company’s co-founders. That, combined with a listen-first approach to building the business, has led to their long-held belief that when it comes to dieting to lose weight, the food has to be delicious to be effective. “Everything we do today, from a high level of customization to making our meals really flavorful, is tied to what our clients wanted from us in the beginning. We learned that if we could make our product taste great and be a reflection of individual preferences, then the weight loss comes more easily because people are excited about what they’re eating,” Stewart says. A client who comes to Sunfare to drop unwanted pounds is put onto one of two tracks: The Fat Burn Diet, a more aggressive approach in which clients can lose up to a pound a day (do the math and that starts to add up!), or the Signature Diet, a slow and steady approach that promises up to two pounds a week. With Fat Burn, clients do an intermittent fasting style of eating, receiving two lean, gluten-, dairy-, and sugar-free meals, plus snacking produce, each day, while on Signature the approach is three meals and two snacks a day, with the food being highly tailored to a client’s height, weight, activity level, and ingredient dislikes. Both tracks are incredibly reliable but do require a level of commitment (as in, you have to eat the meals!) to work their magic.
25 YEARS OF GOURMET MEALS AND RELIABLE WEIGHT-LOSS RESULTS • Lose up to one pound a day with the Fat Burn Diet. Great for special events like weddings and vacations, healthy resets, or significant weight loss. • Lose up to two pounds a week with the Signature Diet. This well-rounded menu is great for longterm eating, picky or sensitive eaters, and lots of variety. • Sunfare meals are made fresh every day with high-end, all-natural/organic ingredients, and delivered right to your front door, ready to heat up and eat. • Celebrity clients mentioned with Sunfare in the media include Kim Kardashian, Kate Beckinsale, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez, Mark Wahlberg, Ryan Seacrest, Debra Messing, Robert Pattinson, Marcia Cross, Paula Abdul, Charlie Sheen, and many others. For us, it’s about helping people look, feel, and live better. That’s what makes this so rewarding,” says Ferro. The Draw of the Bell Architect Eddie Jones Fell in Love With all Things Arizona—a Journey That’s Resulted in his Impressive Collection of Cosanti Windbells
ARTICLE BY GEORGANN YARA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIA DUBOIS
Ever since he was a kid, Eddie Jones never had a doubt he’d have a career in architecture and design. The founder of Jones Studio credits this passion to Encyclopedia Britannica, in which he saw a photo of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, a home in southwestern Pennsylvania, which is one of the iconic Arizona architect’s most acclaimed works. The home is known for being the quintessential representation of Wright’s harmonious union of art and nature. One look at the multitiered home and cascading water flowing from it, and Jones, then just 6 years old, was hooked. “It sparked an interest in something I couldn’t even spell at the time,” he recalls. And that’s how the son of a petroleum engineer, raised in the oil fields of Oklahoma, got into architecture—and ultimately became a serious collector of Soleri’s Cosanti Original windbells.
Further architectural research also sparked an interest in all things Arizona. In 1973, a year after earning his architecture degree from Oklahoma State University, Jones followed that calling to the Southwest. “Between Frank Lloyd Wright, Soleri, and Arizona Highways, I fell in love with the Sonoran Desert. I packed up my beater Volkswagen, hit the road to move to Phoenix, and never looked back,” Jones says. His first stop was Wright’s Taliesin West. The second was Cosanti, the gallery, studio, and home of the late Italian-American architect Paolo Soleri, who Jones actually met during that visit. Then, he found a hotel. Jones’ priorities were in the right order. He purchased his first bell during that second stop. Today, it hangs among a hundred-plus that he has procured over the decades. Some are at his homes in Ahwatukee and Mexico, while others are proudly displaced in his Tempe studio. CONTINUED >

Jones estimates that he’s purchased an additional hundred more for family and friends. Every time a baby is born into his family, he or she gets a tiny Cosanti bell. And at the end of a residential job, he gives a large one to clients as a housewarming gift. The handmade pieces have been crafted by skilled artists since 1955, and are made using native clay and bronze. Each bell is truly one-of-a-kind, shaped in a sand mold created just for that single bell. Because they are composed of local earth and elements, it’s said the sound produced is also unique, distinctly Arizona, and cannot be duplicated by any other vessel. Of course, this significance is not lost on Jones. But the appreciation that led to him becoming an aficionado goes much deeper. “They may be bells, but they are also very sculptural. They are representative of not only Soleri’s philosophy but symbolic of the desert,” Jones says. Jones also enjoys spotting the bells during his travels around the globe or even in magazine photos, subtly hanging in the background of a photographer’s main focus. The most unexpected spot was at a monastery in the middle of nowhere just outside of Dallas. Jones was drawn to the architecture of the monastery and met the monk who lived there. The monk told Jones the bell had been a gift. Every sighting brings an immediate connection. “Whenever I see one hanging from a firescape in Manhattan or Tokyo, you know you have a friend there,” says Jones. And no matter how many bells he adds to his impressive collection, Jones continues to see and embrace each one for the unique and special piece of art it is, as if he’s admiring it for the first time. “I never get tired of simply looking at them and never get tired of hearing them. It’s like a painting I’ve owned for 10 years but there’s always something new to see,” Jones says. “They continue to bring me joy.”

TOUCHDOWN FOR GOOD
Randal Norton
After high school, Norton went on to play collegiate basketball at the University of Redlands. He moved back after graduation to begin his career in accounting. Once established—thanks in great part to those early lessons—Norton began to get involved in the community, initially by coaching basketball at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix and serving on its board. “In 2001, a friend encouraged me to look into the Fiesta Bowl,” says Norton. “I was familiar with the game but was inspired to learn that it is also a local organization made up of more than 3,000 business and civic leaders that—through the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, Guaranteed Rate Bowl, and its year-round events such as the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl Parade presented by Lerner & Rowe—provide critical support to the community.” By 2002, Norton joined the organization’s Yellow Jacket Committee. Over the next decade-plus, he served in several leadership roles within the committee, eventually being named to the Fiesta Bowl board of directors in 2015.
Randal Norton and the Fiesta Bowl
Discipline. Empathy. Camaraderie. Perseverance. “These are just some of the things I learned from my early athletic career in Arizona,” says Randal Norton, whose family moved to the Valley from Minneapolis when he was 13. “Thanks to sports—basketball, baseball, and track—I found my place at Paradise Valley High School, despite being the new kid.”

Earlier this year, Norton—who is also the lead client service partner and regional managing director with Deloitte, LLP—was named the Fiesta Bowl board chair for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons. In his role, he oversees the governance of the board and helps lead and promote the nonprofit organization, its prominent role in college football, and its extensive community efforts. According to Norton, the charitable efforts are many, including the following. •
•
•
•
The Palo Verde Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers program, which in November 2022 provided $2,500 awards to 400 teachers for a total of $1 million in giving. KABOOM! Playground Builds, through which volunteers from the Fiesta Bowl and KABOOM! come together with community partners to build playgrounds and multipurpose sports courts for areas in need. The Arizona Milk Producers Youth Football Clinic, a clinic that teaches fundamentals while building confidence, a strong work ethic, and providing motivation that will help kids succeed on and off the field. More than $3 million annually in charitable giving to nonprofit organizations around the state of Arizona that serve youth, sports, and education.
“In addition, each year the Fiesta Bowl awards grants to nonprofits statewide that provide services within our core pillars of youth, sports, and education,” says Norton. “This year, we were able to award grants to 40 organizations, positively impacting more than one million Arizonans.” FiestaBowl.org

LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS
Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.
BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.
MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic.
