Love weighs more than gold ...

The best holiday gift is to realize how much you already have. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That is why it’s called the present.

As I type my first official Lifestyle Letter as the owner/publisher of this publication, I’m grateful for the gifts that mean the most.

While my husband has deep roots in Arizona, I moved to the Valley 13 years ago from California. I relocated for two reasons: 1: for my former job as a local TV news anchor, and 2: to take a chance at a happily ever after, hoping I’d score a forever with my now-husband. Well, it worked out, and fast-forward to the precious present, we’re raising our three boys immersed in a village full of people who embrace us like family.

To me, the gift of community is priceless.

I’d love to offer my embrace to you, our community, and re-welcome you to our City Lifestyle family. Let’s take a moment to reflect how blessed we are to live in paradise. With iconic Camelback Mountain as a backdrop, we reside in the most stunning desert oasis in the heart of the great state of Arizona.

As I dive into this new chapter taking over Paradise Valley City Lifestyle, I am most thankful for my family; my boys are beyond thrilled for their mom’s new endeavor, and a shout-out to my husband for being my rock throughout this exciting journey. I am also thankful for the opportunity to share uplifting, inspirational, and enlightening stories. In this issue, I chatted with Alice Cooper who says living in PV is like living on vacation. So true.

With the holidays upon us, take a moment to take it all in.

Especially during this time of year, my husband and I aim to instill in our sons memories over monetary, a passion to pay it forward, and traditions spanning Santa to spinning dreidels. Time can be a thief, so we strive to savor the little things—the simple things we often take for granted.

With gratitude, let’s welcome the holiday season. Whether you get your holiday light from a menorah, twinkling Christmas tree, or simply the winter sunshine, my family and I wish you and yours all things merry and bright.

To many, he’s the Billboard-bearing theatrical heavy metal musician dubbed the Godfather of Shock Rock. But to his five grandchildren, Alice Cooper is known as “Pop-pop.”

“I’m the biggest sucker. My grandchildren own me,” says the superstar of 50-plus years.

As Cooper lovingly calls Paradise Valley home, he took the time to chat with our publisher reflecting on Christmastime as a kid, their Cooper holiday traditions, and his passion for giving back to the community.

GROWING UP A MINISTER’S SON, WHAT WERE THE HOLIDAYS LIKE WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG? We were lower-middle class Detroit. My dad was an honest used car salesman, and my mom was a waitress, so if we got two presents, it was a big deal. However, Christmas was special because it snowed and everybody on the block knew each other.

WHAT WAS THE BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT YOU EVER RECEIVED? My dad got me a Michigan Wolverines helmet. It meant everything.

DESCRIBE CHRISTMAS WITH THE COOPERS WHEN YOUR KIDS WERE YOUNG.

We always attend Christmas Eve service, and the day after Christmas, our family heads to Maui.

When my kids were little, they would sleep under the Christmas tree in sleeping bags. As soon as the sun came up, we’d start opening gifts.

WHAT DOES LIVING IN PARADISE VALLEY MEAN TO YOU?

WHAT’S CHRISTMAS LIKE NOW THAT YOUR KIDS ARE GROWN? Well, my kids still sleep under our Christmas tree with their kids! I thought the tradition would end, but it’s only bigger and better. Before we open any gifts, though, Sheryl (my wife) reads The Littlest Angel.

I go full-throttle overboard with gifts. It takes hours to open everything. There’s a ton of coffee involved.

When you land in Phoenix after you’ve been on tour, it’s like you’re on vacation. I went to Cortez High, hung at Christown Mall, and grew up watching Wallace and Ladmo.

Our kids went to Hopi Elementary School. PV is paradise, and PV is home.

FAVORITE HOT SPOTS IN THE VALLEY? We love Tarbell’s and Maple & Ash. I play golf at Phoenix Country Club, The Phoenician, and Orange Tree.

YOU STARTED SOLID ROCK TEEN CENTERS IN 1995 WITH CHUCK SAVALE AND YOUR WIFE SHERYL. YOU HAVE MULTIPLE VALLEY LOCATIONS, WITH ANOTHER OPENING NEXT YEAR. AS THE FOUNDING FATHER OF YOUR FOUNDATION, HOW DO YOU FEEL SEEING IT EVOLVE? Sheryl and I saw a need for teenagers; a kid’s biggest enemy is too much time on their hands. Every kid has a talent, so we opened a place encouraging teens to find themselves. There’s no catch; we offer free private music and art lessons. Our mission is to help teens identify with creativity.

YOU’RE AN IDOL FOR SO MANY. WHO IS YOUR MUSICAL IDOL? When I was 15, The Beatles came out. I knew I was artistic, and when I heard The Beatles, I knew I wanted to be a musician.

YOU’VE BEEN MARRIED ALMOST 50 YEARS ... WHAT’S THE SECRET TO SUCCESSFUL MATRIMONY? Sheryl and I have common values and never fight. If I could pick anybody to hang out with, it would be her.

“A grazing table is aesthetically arranged and often includes meats, cheeses, crudités, dips, sauces, fruit and flowers to spruce it up,” explains Stacey Weber, the chef and owner at EAT by Stacey Weber and Amelia’s by EAT. Weber—known for her catering, her restaurant, and her work with local celebrities like the Arizona Cardinals—is also often called on to create stunning grazing tables.

“These glorified boards are impressive in look and perfect for entertaining,” she says.

Here are her tips for creating a gorgeous grazing table that will impress holiday guests.

1. Seasonality. Use seasonal fruits, vegetables, decorations, and recipes. In winter, board items can include roasted vegetables, warm soups, cranberry sauces, baked brie, spiced mixed nuts, stuffed figs, and roasted meats. In warmer months, consider chilled light foods like fruit salsa, gazpacho, and mini salads.

2. Theme. Incorporate a theme like a holiday breakfast/brunch or a delectable dessert board (like an array of Christmas cookies). Creating a theme makes it easier to plan, prep, and execute your grazing table.

3. Something unexpected. Add a twist. Just because it’s on a board doesn’t mean you

can’t add something unique. Love a good dip? Go for a mini fondue pot! You can also offer mini sandwiches, avocado toast, sushi, or pizza slices. As long as it’s bite-size, anything goes!

4. Decor. For holiday entertaining, dress your grazing table with wintery decor like pine sprigs, fig leaves, bunches of herbs or lavender, fresh flowers, candles, ornaments, or pine cones.

5. Organization. A great grazing board has many elements, so make sure it makes sense. For example, put crudités near the dips, cheeses and meats near the crackers or crostini, and bunches of grapes or whole fruits around the outside to hug the board. You can utilize elevation for canapés or composed bites, easily done with a cake stand.

Also, mix colors so white cheese and white crackers are not next to each other, and utilize decorative items to fill space.

I just want to sit outside by a fire with a cigar and savor this cocktail.”

You’ll discover remarkable comfort in the 2024 Mercedes GLS 580 4MATIC. There is room to seat seven inside this luxury SUV. The soft leather upholstery goes beautifully with the new MANUFAKTUR Piano Lacquer trim and Silver Shadow finish on the climate control vents. These are options previously only available for the Maybach GLS.

STAYING CONNECTED WITH THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) is an exquisite infotainment system with three driver-selected display styles. You can choose from Classic, Sporty, or Discreet, with seven color schemes and ambient lighting.

When you head off-road, choose the Off-Road Mode that turns information you need— like gradient, lateral inclination, compass, and steering angle—into a visual experience on the center display.

MBUX includes Voice Control multimedia systems with Augmented Video.

TOUGH UNDER THE HOOD All of this luxury and comfort doesn’t mean you’ll sacrifice power. The 510 hp engine offers 538 lb.-ft. of torque, amping up to 531 hp with 722 lb.-ft. of torque with the added electric boost.

AIRMATIC suspension is standard, and you can reach 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds, with a top speed of 130 mph.

4MATIC all-wheel drive includes an off-road driving mode with Downhill Speed Regulation and Transparent Hood. An optional Off-Road Engineering Package is available if you want to take to the backroads.

The Mercedes GLS 580 has the brawn to let you pull that camper to the mountains for the weekend with a towing capacity of up to 7,716 lbs. It includes Trailer Maneuvering Assist and an updated Trailer menu in the center display.

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year.

With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.”

“We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds.

City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
