Welcome to 2022!

It’s been quite a couple of years, but as always, I feel refreshed and eager for the clean slate of a new year each January. Yes, I also feel that pull to make resolutions (that I will, to be honest, probably break, like giving up chocolate!), but truly it’s the promise of things to come that motivates me for the year ahead—all the opportunities yet to be discovered, friends yet to be made, and achievements looming on the horizon.

With how busy life becomes, taking time to welcome in the new year is a nice reminder to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority, or at least what should be.

To help you on your way, we packed this issue full of information! First, did you know that actress Sharon Stone sits on the Barrow Neurological Foundation’s Board of Trustees? Read all about her massive health scare and how she’s now involved.

The Singletons Open H.U.B. as a Community Resource The Singletons, a nonprofit organization that serves the needs of single-parent families battling cancer, recently opened the Help Us Build (H.U.B.) community center. A Letter From OUR PUBLISHER

Happy New Year!

We hope you all had a joyous holiday season filled to the brim with precious time and heartfelt love and laughter with friends and family! Now, it’s officially 2022 … WOW! How did that happen??

Honestly, I really love this time of year, it’s when things feel fresh, new, and exciting. I see the beginning of a new year as a reminder to stay focused on my goals and the life I want to live. It is so easy for us all to get right back into the grind and lose sight of that. I encourage you to look at it differently this time. Maybe implement some new little habits and rituals to stay on track with those goals … you can start small and grow from there. I find that when I set my goals too high, it becomes daunting and oftentimes too difficult to attain. It takes baby steps... one step at a time to move the needle forward. This is my strategy in the new year—to stay engaged and take things slow and steady. That is a challenge in and of itself for me as I always tend to rush into things and go hard and fast, which typically stifles me and leads to eventual burnout. I encourage you to take the necessary steps each day to achieve your goals. This will lead you to success and contentment through living the life you want to live, and knowing it’s possible! Just that thought is a relief!

With all of that in mind, we can’t begin to explain how excited we are to share the new look with our official rebrand for 2022: Paradise Valley City Lifestyle! This rebrand was undertaken with great purpose in order to tie in our robust digital platform CityLifestyle.com, which brings you even more amazing lifestyle content each month! You may also notice a few new segments, as well. This letter, for one!

You will be hearing from both myself, as well as Michelle Glicksman, our Editor-in-Chief, each month! Our “City Scene” changed in look, but will still continue to bring you photos displaying all of the amazing events and things going on in the community. Hungry for something new in 2022? Here are a few of the new spots that opened in the latter half of 2021, each well worth being added to your food and beverage bucket list for the year ahead.

NEIGHBORLY PUBLIC HOUSE Opened just prior to the holidays in Uptown Phoenix, Neighborly is the latest concept from Arcadia native Christopher Collins, the chef-owner of The Macintosh, Twisted Grove, and more. The dinner-only concept is adorned with steel accents and plaid wallpaper, making for a refined and angular look and feel, and warmed by thick walnut tables and chic lighting. The food is primarily refined American in theme, with a hearty spinach dip, bacon-topped burger, rotisserie chicken, and prime cuts of meat. For fans of Collins, a handful of his favorite items from his other concepts are on the menu, as are some ultra-fresh seafood options.

BARCOA AGAVERIA Almost hidden behind XICO, a Latinx and Indigenous art gallery and working artist studio in Phoenix, BARCOA opened in late 2021. The bar was developed

by Arizona Taco Festival and Phoenix Pizza Festival creator David Tyda in homage to the spirit of Mexico, especially its agave spirit and wine producers. In order to create an authentic atmosphere, Tyda and business partner Ryan Oberholtzer sourced nearly every design element directly from Mexico. The lower portion of the bar is dark and sexy, with a more refined cocktail menu and educational tequila, mezcal, and other agave spirit tastings. The more casual upper cantina is all about Mexico’s most iconic agave-infused offerings, including the batanga and, of course, the margarita. Insider tip: try a 1.5-ounce pour from the “Otro Agave” menu, which features lesser-known agave spirits including sotol, bacanora, and raicilla. BarcoaPHX.com

As much a tribute to owner Melissa Maggiore’s recently passed father—Phoenix culinary icon Tomaso Maggiore—as to the food of her family’s native Sicily, this 5,000-square-foot concept opened in mid2021. Of particular note here is the stage and piano, where crooners sing all things Rat Pack and Billy Joel.

Opposite the stage is a wraparound bar with an impressive selection of Italian wines, beers, and cocktails, including an out-of-this-world, gelato-infused martini.

The menu boasts Tomaso’s signature classics, family favorites, and new recipes including Spaghetti Picchiu Pacchiu, a dish where 100% of proceeds are donated to the Tomaso Maggiore Culinary Arts Foundation.

“Today we have a big-ass morning, just so you know,” says Borja Uria, one of our trip leaders, as he smiles.

Uria is referring to the 40-plus miles our group from Arizona will be biking today, day two of a multi-day Backroads bike trip to two of the Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain.

“I rode my Peloton TWICE,” Arcadia resident and friend Jackie Hutt responds when I ask her what she did to train for our trip to Mallorca and Menorca.

“I’ve never biked more than 30 miles in a row before,” pal Heidi Crown says, laughing. “But here I am, biking in Spain… a bucket list trip. It’s surreal.”

Sadly, MY training included just one bike ride and a few yoga sculpt classes. But, I’m excited to work off some of the weight I gained Zooming and get back outside for my first big international trip with others since the pandemic started. Sure there are some added hurdles when it comes to navigating Covid travel—government forms to fill out, negative test results, and vaccination cards to show upon arrival. The five other couples joining my husband Kenn and I on this active vacation are more than happy to make the effort.

Our guides are just as excited since, like so many others in the hospitality industry, they had to suspend operations when the Covid crisis hit. Berkeley-based Backroads has been leading guided biking, hiking, and multi-sport adventure trips around the world since 1979, when founder Tom Hale first had an idea in the middle of the night to start a bike touring company and encourage active travel (Backroads. com). They’ve slowly started adding back some of their international destinations, taking all precautions, and welcoming travelers again safely. They’ve also added E-bikes, which is a game-changer for those who may be intimidated by the thought of pedaling over anything steeper than a speed bump.

We begin our trip in the beautiful Serra de Tramuntana mountains, part of Mallorca’s World Heritage-designated landscape that attracts more than 80,000 bikers year-round. Mallorca is a melting pot of cultures and traditions, dating back centuries. You’ll find stunning beaches, lush vineyards, and enough windmills to make even the Dutch jealous. A stop at the well-preserved Medieval town of Alcudia allows us a chance to stretch our legs.

Our bike route continues to the water, where the strong winds off Pollenca Bay test my balance and riding skills but provide ideal conditions for the kiteboarders enjoying the day.

The six-day trip takes us to the picturesque Cap de Formentor, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean, and then on to Menorca, a smaller island a mere 40-minute flight north.

Not as well-known as Mallorca, Menorca has a hidden gemvibe, where our fearless Arizona group welcomed the chance to bike through miles of whitewashed villages and rolling hills (a support van available should last night’s serving of Spanish wine take an early toll).

“The biking in Mallorca is, dare I say, world-class,” leader Carlos Abud tells me. “Obviously, all of the best riders go there… but Menorca? It’s a Mediterranean island where time stands still, and everything moves slow.”

Menorca is also home to a wonderful brewery and the Michelinrated Es Moli De Foc, a delightful cozy restaurant surrounded by colorful walls featuring even more colorful artwork. Our group may have overwhelmed owner Vincent with questions about their house-made lager and memorable paella.

That’s another thing—you’ll never go hungry on a Backroads trip. The company prides itself on finding local spots to treat its guests, usually ready for carb-loading after hours on a bike. One afternoon, our support driver Javier Menses actually prepares a traditional Mallorcan picnic himself, featuring local cheeses, sobrasada (meat), and traditional cocarroi (pastries filled with meats and vegetables).

Our longest day of riding on the island brought us past many traditional farmhouses and then through the otherworldly rocky landscape leading to the Cape of Caballerias, where a lighthouse and stunning views made the uphill pedaling all worth it.

A final dinner at Torralbenc allowed our grateful group the chance to relive trip highlights, compare notes about leg soreness, and thank our leaders for keeping us safe and giving us lots of laughs. I also think we managed to convince them to add the Grand Canyon state to THEIR travel list.

“At the very end, it’s very simple what we do,” Abud says. “We ride our bikes, we like to have good food, we stay at beautiful places, and we see amazing things outside. It’s super simple and that’s the best part of life, right?”

In 2017, Dr. Lawton took over as Barrow Neurological Institute’s president and CEO, bringing his expertise to the renowned Phoenix destination. He’s also the chair of the Department of Neurosurgery.

And this past June, Stone—who is now passionate about brain research—joined its foundation’s Board of Trustees.

“I’ve [joined the Board] not just because Barrow is the leading neuroscience institute in the world, but also because the president and CEO … is Michael T. Lawton, M.D., the same brilliant neurosurgeon who saved my life all those years ago,” she says. “This institute was and is the finest institute globally to be treated for these types of injuries. Anyone who has a brain injury would be in the finest hands that they can possibly be in at Barrow Neurological Institute.”

“A brain aneurysm ruptures every 18 minutes in the U.S., and 40% of those ruptures are fatal. Two-thirds of survivors suffer permanent neurological deficits. The federal government currently only spends approximately 83 cents per year on brain aneurysm research for each person afflicted, which is simply not enough,” says Dr. Lawton.

Over the past two decades since her surgery and recovery—she had to learn to walk, talk, and function again—Stone was busy raising her three adopted boys and acting in a variety of television and film projects.

In 2006, she received the Nobel Peace Summit Award for her work with HIV/AIDS sufferers. She has also received a Harvard Humanitarian Award, a Human Rights Campaign Humanitarian Award, and an Einstein Spirit Award, as well as many other accolades.

In May of 2021, her film Here Today—a comedy-drama directed by Billy Crystal and also starring Crystal and Tiffany Haddish—debuted in theatres.

In 2021, she also published The Beauty of Living Twice, her memoir in which she speaks about her childhood, her rise in Hollywood, and her humanitarian efforts, as well as when she had her stroke.

“Possibility made me write this book: the opportunity to grow & to share that growth. I have learned to forgive the unforgivable. My hope is that as I share my journey you too will learn to do the same,” she had said on Twitter around its release.

The book was released in hardcover and as an ebook, and Stone narrated the story for its Audible edition.

Up next? The movie currently titled Beauty, which is scheduled to be released this year. It tells the story of a talented “young Black woman who struggles to maintain her voice and identity after she’s offered a lucrative recording contract,” and stars Gracie Marie Bradley as Beauty.

All this was possible due to the fact that “a brilliant neurosurgeon was able to pull off the nearly impossible surgery that gave me a second chance at life,” says Stone, who will be returning to Barrow this spring to celebrate the opening of its new global headquarters, the Barrow Neuroplex.

Staying Afloat CREATIVE ARCHITECTURE YIELDS A PRAGMATIC SOLUTION TO A GLASS KITCHEN

It was a quandary that even a veteran architect faced for the first time.

When PHX Architecture President Erik Peterson took on the new build of a stunning 5,690-square-foot Desert Mountain home, the kitchen demanded special attention. The home of Susan and Ed Mueller granted nearly 360-degree unobstructed desert views and sky.

And also two houses across the street.

Harnessing the gorgeous natural light into the kitchen and the adjoining great room while blocking the views of those houses was Peterson’s challenge.

“The views were all over the place. When you have a kitchen, you need walls to put cabinets on. But what do you do when you have glass all around?” Peterson says.

Through creative planning and coordination with the interior designer, Peterson found the solution for the 600-square-foot, west-facing kitchen.

Floating cabinetry strategically placed in front of the glass windows that flank either side of the sink blocks the homes when approaching the kitchen.

Steel framing that supports the roof serves as the posts that also hold the cabinets in place.

The placement and size allows for plenty of light to permeate the space, which flows into the adjacent great room.

By accomplishing both objectives, the move is both functional and design-forward.

“It all came together—the concept of cabinets that floated in between and blocked the views of the houses but still let light come in above and

below them,” Peterson says. “We’ve never done cabinets that just float in the middle of glass. It was a first for us.”

Other elegant touches include piano lacquer finished wood cabinets and quartz countertops and central island. What looks like a fire feature on the island’s face is an installation of gold sculptures sitting on a recessed shelf.

This results in a comprehensive working kitchen that doesn’t necessarily look or feel like a traditional kitchen—another wish the Muellers had. In fact, from the north-facing great room, the space looks like walls.

“They love it,” Peterson says. “They feel like it’s a piece of artwork.”

Marlena Krueger enjoys helping women and men look their absolute best.

“I always loved doing transformations of any kind, whether it was a home I was selling as a real estate agent or by asking friends and family if I could fix their hair or makeup,” she says.

As a baby boomer, Krueger especially wants to assist people with transitioning beautifully through the aging process.

“We feel great as we get older, and we want to look great, too!”

In 2007, she completely renovated a building she bought in the Biltmore area of Phoenix and opened Body Beautiful Med Spa & Day Spa. “When we first opened, we didn’t see young people or men,” says Krueger. “It was mainly geared for females from 35 to 65. Now we have all ages, and men also come in to take advantage of our services.”

And there are an abundance of services from which to choose, including solo and couples’ massages; eyelash enhancements; and laser treatments for hair removal, skin rejuvenation, and tightening.

“We have the latest non-invasive treatments, such as radio frequency, plasma energy, fillers, and Botox®. So, I now call our spa the ‘beautification center.’”

Krueger is perhaps the best advertisement for her business. Without giving her age away, clients often think she is about 10 years younger than she actually is.

“People come in and tell their nurse or technician, ‘I want what Marlena has.’”

The technicians on staff are highly trained in the spa’s methods and equipment.

“One has been with me for 10 years, which is unheard of in this business,” she says. “Many others have been here for years, and they know what they’re doing.

A lot of them came from doctor’s offices— two of them used to work for plastic surgeons—so they have medical backgrounds. The quality of our technicians and our services has put us over the top.”

In eight out of the last 14 years, she says, Ranking Arizona has named Body Beautiful Med Spa & Day Spa the number one medical spa.

“So you know you have come to the right place and don’t have to keep looking. We know what clients like and don’t like. If someone is scared, we can start slowly and do just one thing at a time. Plus, we’re conservative and are all about the natural look.”

Being in the spa, she says, has been described as coming to visit your girlfriend because their staff is so friendly.

“One of the front desk staff has been here for five years. She’s friendly, she’s bubbly, and greets people by name.”

Krueger adds that the atmosphere of the spa is casual so that everyone feels comfortable walking in.

“We’re not standoffish or intimidating. We open the door for everybody.”
