THE JW MARRIOTT DESERT RIDGE VALUES “TOGETHERNESS” WITH THE INTENT OF CULTIVATING AND FOSTERING A SINCERE SENSE OF BELONGING, AND MERITAGE EMBRACES THAT TENFOLD WITH ITS COMMUNAL TABLES, COMFORTABLE PATIOS, LAWN GAMES AND OUTDOOR FIRE PITS. The ambiance is warm and welcoming and appeals to families, couples, golfers, local residents and of course, resort guests. Look closer, though— the ingredients in their dishes and presentation are beyond compare, all beginning with natural sources found right on the grounds of the resort. Meritage’s menu is innovative American cuisine inspired by local ingredients sourced from Arizona farms and purveyors including Crow’s Dairy and McClendon Farms. "Again, we stay true to the JW brand pillars of nourishment and bringing the outdoors in," says Dejan Djukic, Meritage's head chef. "Being sustainable is expected in this day and age, and utilizing the seasonality of our chef’s garden and hand-picking our own

herbs and maintaining close relationships with those purveyors and farmers in the community is what helps us offer fresh, re-imagined flavors. This is one of the reasons why Meritage’s menu changes seasonally, because ingredients change by the season. We always keep beloved favorites on our menu too." The resort itself boasts a 21,000-square-foot organic Chef's Garden, where Dejan and other resort chefs carefully choose ingredients for that night's specialty salads or entrees. From asparagus, artichokes and a variety of peppers, lettuces or herbs, even the most discerning of palates will be impressed. More than 10 different varieties of vegetables and herbs are grown per season based on culinary needs and trends. "It is common for guests to seek fresh, healthy, organic and local influences in the foods they eat whether dining in or out, and we provide that at Meritage," Dejan says. And what is even more impressive is the "sweet" selection you'll find on the menu at Meritage thanks to the bees housed on-site. They produce anywhere between 10 to 36 gallons of raw honey per year, and the fruits of their labor are sparingly and carefully utilized by the resort's culinary team in various salad dressings and recipes in the restaurants. The property is the only known resort property in Phoenix/ Scottsdale that harvests its own honey bees and hosts actual "Bee Breaks" for small VIP groups. Meritage is the ideal spot to savor amazing dishes with local and seasonal touches and an unwavering healthful approach.

THE HOVEY FAMILY IS INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN FOR THEIR UNIQUE ARCHITECTURAL STYLE. Since launching the family-owned architecture and development company Optima in 1978, the Hoveys have brought to life more than 5,300 units spanning 30 multifamily projects, some in Arizona. The original goal of co-founder David Hovey Sr. was to reinvent residential housing by optimizing development, design and construction within a single company. He recognized an opportunity to raise the design standard by building architecturally ambitious housing that elevates the sense of home for modern-style enthusiasts with contemporary lifestyles. His wife, Eileen, the other co-founder, has also been instrumental since day one and was actually responsible for choosing the name Optima and even scouting and acquiring the land for Optima’s first project in 1978. An ecological mindset has taken center stage at the Hovey Residences here in Arizona. By minimizing the building footprint and putting parking 100 percent underground, they've created more open space and mitigated the heat island effect. The innovative vertical landscaping system allows each residential unit to have a private outdoor space, and the building façades create shade and shadows that help minimize the heat factor. Energy conservation and carbon dioxide emission reduction are achieved with high-performance glazing, overhangs and careful building configuration. Kierland has been the prototype for the Phoenix Green Construction Code for resilient, high-performance buildings. "We believe it is the right thing to do for 21st-century residential housing and that landscaping is extremely important to creating sustainability as well as a pleasant overall community environment," David Jr. says. "We put an emphasis on minimizing hard materials like blacktop, roads and parking lots surrounding our buildings to create more open green space. We have committed ourselves to the Architecture 2030 Challenge, with the mission of being carbon-neutral by the year 2030."

Raw ingredients that tone and protect the skin are key, coupled with anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial benefits. C A L ARTICLE STACI HAUK PHOTOGRAPHY WHITNEY DINOTA ONCE THE WINTER HOME OF DELOS COOKE AND HIS WIFE, FLORENCE, THE ROYAL PALMS SITS ON A LUSH 9-ACRE PARCEL NEAR THE BASE OF CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN. Against this dramatic backdrop, the Cookes modeled their estate after their beloved grand European adventures. The vision for Florence was that of a Mediterranean villa. When all was complete, the lavish grounds housed more than 900 rare palms, citrus trees, exotic blooms and shrubs as well as numerous specimen cacti. Many original palms dating back to 1929, such Mexican, California, windmill and Mediterranean fan, pygmy date and royal, can be seen on property today. An impressive 50 species of plants call the grounds of Royal Palms home, from lemon trees to birds of paradise. The plant life on the resort grounds is so steeped in history that during the restoration of the property in the 1990s, great care was given to preserve the plants, trees and shrubs. A Mexican coastal theme was used for the plants that were added, including Jacaranda trees, orchid trees, pear trees, flowering and subtropical plants. The courtyard garden, in its natural serenity, is one of the most tranquil and inspiring spots on the property, with its naturally antiquated elegance that is enjoyed by guests, daily. "We have always been committed to preserving the property's lush natural landscape. We have created an oasis in the desert like no other with its own unique ecosystem and vast array of plant and floral life," says Carlos Morales, general manager. "The variety of greenery enhances the Mediterranean feel of Royal Palms that really characterizes the resort and sets it apart from any other experience in Scottsdale." Royal Palms is expected to launch botanical tours this spring. Signage will be added to approximately two dozen trees, plants and shrubs as a public, self-guided tour. DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK
The 2019 Jaguar
ARTICLE TAMMY FELLOWS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I-PACE EV400 HSE I CHOSE THIS VEHICLE STRATEGICALLY THIS MONTH, AS IT IS THE PERFECT FIT FOR OUR ECO-FRIENDLY ISSUE. This beautiful all-electric SUV may have the body of a small SUV, but let there be no mistake: for an all-electric vehicle, the acceleration is first in its class going f0-60 in 4.5 seconds. With it’s sleek body and smooth driving this vehicle did not disappoint. Driving the I-PACE was seamless with its sports car-like agility and ease of braking by simply letting off the gas. Some of the convenient safety features include rear camera, 360 surround camera, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition and adaptive speed limiter. The Active Air Suspension of the I‑PACE automatically lowers the car by 0.4 inches when traveling at speeds in excess of 65 mph over extended periods of time.
fort with Windsor leather seats including heated and cooled power front sport seats. It provides ultimate temperature comfort with a two-zone climate control. The top boasts a fixed panoramic rooftop with automatic tinting, allowing for an open feel including rear privacy glass. Modern conveniences include a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot, Sirius/XM, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and InControl Apps. With limited driving experience in the all-electric car family, I would recommend this vehicle for its driving enjoyment, comfort, safety and eco-friendly nature.
