sound. It means relief from this heat — and usually making some fun memories! For me, growing up, those were on lakes in New York state. From sunrise to sunset, you'd find me boating with friends, waterskiing and soaking up the sun with baby oil! Note to my 16-year-old self: Use sunscreen! For Mike, much of his summers were spent in the pool, lifeguarding or on a lake, too. Either way, we're both water babies! This month, we're highlighting a variety of ways to stay cool. Why not start with a drink created for Paradise Valley Lifestyle? Our friends at Hotel Adeline mixed up something special and now you can, too.

AFTER

BEFORE BIOMECHANIC DYSFUNCTION AFFECTS DIGESTIVE TRACT (BLOATING)

Most doctors do not educate their patients about taking care of their bodies mechanically. As with all mechanical things that are neglected, there is a point of no return with our human bodies. Physical disabilities and many organ malfunctions (dis-ease) are a direct result of past trauma to the body’s biomechanical frame, often culminating in spinal stenosis. Like a car, once the mechanical parts are worn out completely, the result is failure to function. It is imperative to be proactive about your body’s biomechanical structure to maintain or regain good health. Visiting a proficient, specificallytrained Biomechanical Chiropractor when you’re feeling pain is a positive regimen to correct failure to function.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL OPENS NEW BUILDING On May 18, St. Vincent de Paul celebrated the grand opening of a new building on its main downtown campus at 420 W. Watkins Road. The new 40,000-square-foot building, constructed by Ryan Companies, houses a new family resource center, expanded shelter for the elderly and disabled, and homeless services. This is all part of a $16 million capital project, completely funded by private donors and foundations. “Thanks to the support of the community, volunteers and donors, St. Vincent de Paul’s renewed campus not only offers life-giving services to feed, clothe, house and heal, but also provides tools, solutions and support to help individuals and families lift themselves out of poverty,” says Associate

A SKY-HIGH GEM PENTHOUSE PERFECTION IN ROCKY POINT ARTICLE JOYCE SELK AND KATHLEEN BLAIR

18

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | July 2018

WHAT REALLY BECKONS YOUR ATTENTION IS THE VIEW. OPENING THE LARGE SLIDING GLASS DOORS, THE VIEW IS INCREDIBLE. THE GROUNDS BELOW ARE METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED. PALM TREES BILLOW IN THE OCEAN BREEZE. THE SUN’S REFLECTION SPARKLES OFF THE WATERS OF THE MANY POOLS IN THE COMPLEX.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE IN FOR A TREAT WHEN YOU ARE GIVEN THE

SPECIAL CODE THAT ALLOWS THE ELEVATOR TO TAKE YOU UP TO THE PENTHOUSE AT BELLA SIRENA. Walking inside the beautifully etched

doorway of Penthouse C1301, you find yourself in the spacious yet comfort-

able, living area with a large dining table for 12, leather couches, a 70-inch flat-screen TV and a dream kitchen with granite countertops and high-end stainless steel appliances.

But what really beckons your attention is the view. Opening the large sliding glass doors, the view is incredible. The grounds below are meticulously maintained. Palm trees billow in the ocean breeze. The sun’s reflection sparkles off

the waters of the many pools in the complex. Offering 360-degree views, the skyline of Los Suenos catches your eye to the left and the construction of the new cruise ship dock to the right. Straight ahead is nothing but a beautiful view of the Sea of Cortez and its sandy beach.

Exploring the 5,000-square-foot penthouse, there are “Oh, look!” moments

at every turn. The inside of the condo has literally been brought outdoors with

the large sliding pocket doors opening the living area and master bedroom to

the ocean view. From the walk-in wine cellar with two separate wine coolers; the media room with a great stereo system; the master ensuite complete with fireplace and custom walk-in closet; three more large bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom; and the oversized laundry room to the intricate tile work in the ceiling recesses, the attention to detail will not go unnoticed.

The kitchen is professionally equipped with anything and everything you could possibly need: Viking appliances, well-stocked cupboards and drawers, pass-through windows to the deck and, best of all, a separate ice-making unit to keep up with the many guests.

The palapas are very large — both of them! The furniture is heavy yet inviting, and the outdoor gas grill is large enough to handle lots of cooking.

The hot tub is a welcome respite after a full day of activities. A spiral staircase leads up to the second outdoor space, which is nicely appointed and complete with a fireplace.

The owners of this luxury property are local to Phoenix and bought their first Rocky Point property in 2008, and this one in 2015. They have not spared any expense or attention to detail for their guests. From the welcome note and bottle of Champagne to the supply of amenities and the extremely comfortable beds, you only need to bring your clothes! If you're considering a relaxing and plush stay in Rocky Point, don't miss this gem. The owners of the condo are incredibly accommodating and generous with their home. The only negative thing we could come up with was the thought of it not being available the next time we want to escape to Mexico! A SKY-HIGH GEM

(CON TI N U ED)

ROCKY POINT 101 Puerto Peñasco (nicknamed Rocky Point) is a growing seaside village and beach destination that is an easy four-hour drive from Chandler. Once you cross the border, you will travel less than an hour on the Mexican highway, which is clearly marked along the way as a “hassle-free zone.” Almost every car you see will have an Arizona or California license plate. Although it may seem familiar based on the company, going to a foreign country can be intimidating when you don’t know the culture or laws. The following can help you plan ahead and enjoy your trip. CAR INSURANCE – Everyone driving to Mexico is required by law to purchase Mexican vehicle insurance with liability coverage. There are several places to do so before you cross the border. CURRENCY – The resorts, most restaurants and stores use U.S. currency, but it is wise to have pesos for cabs, tips and street vendors. Credit cards are subject to additional fees when used internationally. There are also fees on cash withdrawals from foreign bank ATMs. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS – Adults and children 16 and over need a passport or passport card. Children under 16 only need their birth certificate. The driver must also have a current driver’s license. Make photocopies of these documents and keep them separate from the originals. VEHICLE TITLES — All vehicles crossing the border must have a vehicle title. This includes cars, trucks, boats, jet skis, water bikes, ATVs, dune buggies, etc. If you are leasing your vehicle, the leasing contract must be in the name of the person driving the car. If your vehicle is a company car and you are allowed to drive it out of the country, you will need to show a document verifying your employment and authorization to drive the vehicle in Mexico. SMART TRAVEL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM (STEP) – This free program is provided by the U.S. government for U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. This program allows you to enter information about your trip so the U.S. Department of State can assist you in case of an emergency. Enroll at Travel.State.Gov. SPEED LIMITS AND TRAFFIC SIGNS – Speed limit signs in Mexico are in kilometers. When driving through Rocky Point, the speed limit is 40 km, or 25 mph, unless otherwise noted. If you break the traffic laws, fines will be assessed and you will be asked to follow the officer to the police station, where fines must be paid immediately. TIPPING – The standard rate for tipping at restaurants, bars and taxis is 15 percent. For parking attendants, laundry service and room service a 10 percent peso tip is customary. 20

THINGS TO DO IN ROCKY POINT EL MALECON BOARDWALK – A stroll down the Malecon in downtown Puerto Peñasco is a great way to take in the local flavor and the magnificent view of the Sea of Cortez. Along the boardwalk, you’ll find shops, restaurants and fish markets. Don’t miss the breathtaking sunsets. FISHING – Whether an avid fisherman or a novice, Rocky Point is one of the best locations in Mexico for fishing because of the surrounding islands, reefs and estuaries. Popular fish species include sierra mackerel, triggerfish, corvina, shrimp, grouper and spotted seabass. SAN JORGE ISLAND — Bird Island – Take a boat ride over to the island. Swim and snorkel with sea lions, do some bird watching, see dolphins, scuba dive or kayak. From October to April, you might see whales! EL PINACATE – Challenge yourself with a hike to the peak of El Pinacate, the Santa Clara Volcano. It is a natural protected area, where lava flowed more than 2 million years ago. The mountain range is filled with rocks, sand and volcanic ashes that have formed spectacular colors and craters. El Pinacate is a well-maintained national park about 45 minutes from Puerto Peñasco. Camping is allowed. GOLF – Three golf courses are available; two are Jack Nicklaus-designed courses with spectacular scenery. SAND DUNES – Sand dunes offer activities such as horseback riding, ATV and dune buggy riding, sand boarding and hiking. OYSTER FARM – Only seven miles from Rocky Point, you can watch oysters being caught, shucked and served.

Staying Cool in the Desert LOCAL PLACES TO ESCAPE THE HEAT ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR

YES, THE SCORCHING WEATHER HAS ARRIVED, AND IT’S HERE TO STAY FOR ANOTHER FEW MONTHS. If you are not fortunate enough to be able to get away to a cooler climate, then you’ll need to find ways to survive the summer’s torrid temperatures. Here are a few fun ways to escape the heat for a couple hours and have fun at the same time.

1

AZ ICE ARCADIA You’ll forget the temperatures outdoors when you’re ice skating at AZ Ice Arcadia, a family-owned ice rink that opened in 1966. The ice rink is open daily for public skating, skating lessons for all ages, and there’s a hockey program for both youth and adults. When you get hungry, you can visit the Ice House Tavern, a sports bar that overlooks the ice rink and offers a menu that includes burgers, wings, sandwiches and more. The tavern has four flatscreen televisions so you can watch your favorite teams play. Plus, it’s an ideal place to hold birthday parties, school events and corporate gatherings.

POLAR PLAY

I don’t know about you, but after a few months of 100-plus degree weather, spending some time in a 23-degree ice cave sounds inviting — and that’s exactly what Polar Play offers. It’s the coolest place in the desert. A visit to Polar Play is like visiting the North and South Poles. You escape the heat and experience the arctic temperatures while playing games, socializing in the lodge or ice cave and enjoying the food and beverages from the Ice Bar. Parkas and gloves are supplied. Sip hot chocolate, coffee or a cocktail as you bundle up. Then participate in a snowball fight or play some of the many games offered for both children and adults. You’ll feel like you’re in an igloo in the desert!

The Man Behind the Business ERIK BRYAN'S RISE TO THE TOP OF THE HVAC INDUSTRY ARTICLE MINDY HASKINS PHOTOGRAPHY CJ GERSHON

TWO DAYS AFTER GRADUATING FROM SCOTTSDALE'S CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL, ERIK BRYAN ENLISTED IN THE U.S. Marine Corps. "Special forces was my angle. It fit my personality," he says. Erik served in the L.A. riots, Operation Desert Storm and Somalia, where he was part of the first SRIG (Surveillance, Reconnaissance, Intelligence Groups), a recon team involved in Black Hawk Down. He received a medal of achievement for his services in Somalia. In 1995, Erik ended his Marine Corps career and moved back home to Scottsdale and enrolled at The Refrigeration School (RSI) to get his HVAC certifications. After graduating from RSI, he and a colleague, Paul Hardin, started Precision Air & Heating. (Hardin died in 2010 in a skydiving accident.) "We had $200 to our name. We would sit there and call straight out of the phone book and offer $40 air-conditioning tune-ups," he says. "We eventually bought a dialer and some phone numbers and hired two people to make calls. One day, we booked 65 calls." That day was a game-changer. Since then, Precision Air & Heating has grown into a $20 million business and is consistently ranked as the No. 1 A/C company in the state by Ranking Arizona. "Our motto is 'people over profits.' We concentrate on taking care of people the right way and know the profits will take care of itself," he says. Erik and his wife, Gina, who is Precision's executive office manager, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year. "I could not do this job without her," he says with a smile. "She's irreplaceable, and she's kinda good looking, too."

Would you like to cut your utility bills up to 30%? Well, an easy question to answer. Of course! But how do you do it? What is the cost? When does that cost convert to a payback?

Here are several key things you can do to make drastic cuts on your energy cost as well as a few simple tips that add up to a little extra savings on top of that.

enjoy movie time again and again! ButterflyWonderland.com

21 CELL PHONE PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS Butterfly Wonderland

First, off, we live in the desert and yes it is hot here. Once the 100 degree plus temperatures start, so does the hardest work from your AC unit along with that dreaded higher utility bill. If you have a flat roof home, make sure your roof is well foamed and re-coated every 5 to 6 years with a good reflective coating. Attic homes have more options for drastic energy cost cuts.

Learn the tips and tricks for tak-

Think about what your car feels like in the summer heat. It is 110 outside but up to 180 degrees in your car. Then you have to run the air full blast for a few minutes to cool it back down. Now, think of your home. Your attic is that car baking at up to 180 degrees with a literal oven on top of your ceiling. It heats up your home continuously which makes your AC run longer and harder.

480.800.3000, ext. 210 for reservations.

At Precision Air & Heating, our Home Performance division offers 3 fold approach to removing attic heat. First we add additional insulation in your attic to spec up to an R-49 value. R-value is a measurement of thermal resistance and the ability for heat to transfer from one side of an object to another. A home after 10 years will lose up to 3 inches of insulation just by the nature of settling. That lowers the R-value which was probably still initially built with minimum standards. Next, we apply a radiant barrier solar reflective coating that deflects up to 80% of thermal penetration. Finally, the big key is adding in low profile, non-mechanical vents, that literally pull the hot air out the attic. It gives the same effect as cracking your car windows to allow the heat to escape. They are even painted to match the existing roof so you never even see them. Homeowners, can do 1, 2 or all 3 of these things to remove attic heat, but when all 3 are done, what was once a 180 degree attic is now maybe just a few degrees warmer than the inside temperature of the home so it makes a tremendous difference. I hear all the time from customers how it literally took hundreds off their monthly summer utility bills. It also works the same way in the winter keeping the heat in and the cold air out. Another smart recommendation is upgrading to a smart learning thermostat like the Nest. They learn your habits and will add a nice addition to your utility savings.
