Explore. Dream. Discover.

T

he summer days I grew up with are very different than the summer days in Arizona. It was the time to be outdoors—riding bikes, going to the beach, water skiing and enjoying the longer days. Our daily activities weren’t hindered by the blazing hot temperatures, but I’m learning how to handle an Arizona summer by embracing, and tweaking, the adventures we can still enjoy. Dive into the pages of any good book —or into the screen of a movie at the local theater (think air-conditioned!) and you’ll quickly be immersed in captivating stories. You’ll be pulled into psychological thrillers or suggestions for self-discovery or improvement. You might be transformed into the world of pirates trying to seize control of ghost ships or root for the superhero as the world is saved. The list goes on and on, but the point is, adventure exists all around us if you know where to find it—and with this month’s issue of Paradise Valley Lifestyle, you won’t have to go far. The kids are out of school, the crowds have subsided and it’s the perfect time for some family time. Don’t let our hot temps dissuade you. We’ve got some local “staycation” options for you to ponder, where you can treat yourself and cool off in a resort pool or retreat inside for some delicious cuisine. Grab an ice cream or check out our Swing into Summer piece that highlights some fun places to try something different. Go about three hours southeast and spend a day, or weekend, in Sierra Vista. Explore beyond your backyard. And don’t forget a camera. There are endless possibilities for experiences to create memories that can last a lifetime. Mark Twain may have summed it up best: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones that you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. May you stay cool, be adventurous and make it a great July!

rom luxury resorts to chiropractic centers and everywhere in between, Anya Fletcher spent the first 15 years of her professional life providing massage services all over the Valley. Regardless of where she was headquartered, however, she had always maintained her own private practice, which was the only time she felt she could provide her clients the level of service they would expect. So with the timing right in 2011, she decided it was time to go completely all on her own, and Desert Dragonfly Holistic Healthcare and Massage was born. “When you work for someone else, often your hands can be tied in how you can interact and follow up with your clients," she explains. “And it has always been my goal for my clients to feel that I am as invested in them as they are in themselves.”

14

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | July 2017

Desert Dragonfly offers a full range of massage services, including Swedish, deep tissue, sports and hot stone. And though they do have an office in Tempe, they are a completely full-service mobile holistic health care company who travels to meet their clients when and where they feel the most comfortable. “I want all of our clients to know that we are available 24/7," Fletcher says. "I can’t always guarantee that they will get an immediate response, but I can promise that their message will be returned as soon as possible. It is not all about the hour or two spent getting a massage, but it is about being accessible and assisting our clients as they need our service.” Full service includes more than just massage; Desert Dragonfly also offers a variety

of energy medicine treatments as well as education with focuses on nutrition, life coaching, herbalism and even toe reading, which is based on the theory that your body holographically records the story of your life. “We try to encompass a full mind, body spiritual and emotional approach," she says. "The goal is to help our clients in all aspects of their life. Be it issues at home or issues at work, aside from relieving stress on the massage table, hopefully we can also provide some stress management techniques that can help as well.” Desert Dragonfly Holistic Healthcare and Massage is located in Tempe but provides services all across the Valley. P A PINNACLE AVIATION HELPS MAXIMIZE THE VALUE OF CLIENTS' JET EXPERIENCE ARTICLE ORIN ANDERSON

16

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | July 2017

Pinnacle Aviation is a full-service aircraft sales, acquisition, charter and management company based at Scottsdale Airport. For nearly 30 years, Pinnacle Aviation has assisted many jet buyers and sellers to maximize the value of their jet experience. After purchasing an aircraft, it is not unusual for a client to request some refurbishment work on the interior and/or the exterior of the jet to fit their preferences and personality. Similar to a home remodel, the process of refurbishing the interior of a personal jet can become complex. Refurbishment upgrades fall into three basic categories: 1) exterior, 2) interior and 3) avionics. The costs associated with refurbishment can vary substantially depending on the scope of the work, the materials chosen and the extent of any repairs needed. A full refurbishment greatly enhances the resale value of the aircraft, however a 100% return on investment will likely not occur. The industry generally uses a 50% return on refurbishment costs, however the salability will greatly improve. The motivation to refurbish a jet is usually for the owner’s personal enjoyment. Pinnacle Aviation recently assisted a client with interviewing and vetting aircraft refurbishment facilities. They ultimately selected the highly acclaimed West Star Aviation, WestStarAviation.com, based in East Alton, Illinois. West Star Aviation specializes in major modifications and interior refurbishment as well as repair and maintenance of airframes, windows, engines, avionics installation and repair, surplus avionics sales, accessory services and exterior paint and parts. Because every jet owner is unique, every design and refurbish project is different. A typical refurbishment project takes four to eight weeks, depending on the scope of work. Once the design team is chosen, they begin working with the jet owner to select the paint scheme and make an initial wish list:

high-speed Internet connectivity, high-definition entertainment systems, moving map system, size and number of video monitors and type and style of seating. Then they help select all of the galley amenities—types of ovens and warmers, coffee and cappuccino makers, lighting fixtures throughout the cabin, lavatory amenities and preferences and finally, select the carpets, fabrics, leathers, and metal plating for latches and buckles. Everything that will be upgraded and installed is listed, prioritized and scheduled in the right sequence. For instance, all of the electronics' wiring must be completed before the flooring and side panels can be installed; the new carpeting is one of the last things to be done. An error in the project sequence can create unnecessary expenses in wasted time and materials. “Once the contract is signed for the work, our design team moves forward with designs until approved by the customer," Debi Cunningham, vice president of marketing and interior design with West Star Aviation explains. "Once approved, everything is ordered. We like to have everything approved, ordered and in-house (if possible) by the time the aircraft arrives for the work, that way we have no hold ups due to delayed delivery of materials.” “Once in-house, we work continually on the interior items (including wood) while the aircraft is going through stripping, exterior painting and any maintenance work, so when done, the interior/wood can start going back into the aircraft, along with the headliner/valance panels," Cunningham continues. "Usually the carpet is the last to go in. Once all the seats, wood cabinetry, bulkheads, galley/lavatory is back in, the carpet is fit, taken back out and serged, then refit and fully installed.” During the planning and design phase, the interior of the jet is often completely stripped out, exposing the airframe and all of the wiring. Pinnacle Aviation’s recent client designed new stripes on the exterior of their jet to convey personality and enhance ramp presence. While the interior materials were being gathered, the exterior painting project began. Painting an aircraft involves much more than just shooting a glossy coat of paint. As with most aspects of the refurbishment, the value is in the details. The exterior paint project took about four weeks to complete and the interior work began on schedule. “After the job is complete, we normally do a test flight," Cunningham says. "When the test flight comes back and all checks out, the customer is good to go.” Pinnacle Aviation has worked with West Star Aviation on many refurbishment projects over the past two decades. Clients continue to challenge the status quo and persistently push the design teams to add new amenities and innovative technologies. It is always inspiring to see the creativity manifest with each new project.

Sierra Vista has something for everyone from history buffs to outdoorsmen to even food and wine enthusiasts

Sierra Vista’s 4,600-foot elevation means the average daytime temperature is about 74 degrees, and it rarely exceeds 100 degrees even during the height of the summer months. The only thing better than the weather? The endless list of things to do, to see and to eat. Here are some best bets:

History Fort Huachuca Museum: Still an active military installation, Fort Huachuca was established in 1877 to defend American settlers and protect Mexico. Those who mustered there in the early years quelled Apache raids and tangled with the likes of Billy the Kid and Pancho Villa. The fort was also home to Buffalo Soldiers, who earned their nickname during the Indian Wars. The Fort Museum, located on Fort Huachuca, commemorates more CONTINUED >

than 150 years of history, from the first attempts to tame the territory in 1846 to World War II. A visit to the museums on Fort Huachuca is a must for history buffs and espionage enthusiasts alike. The museums boast historic buildings, exhibits and dioramas that bring the past to life and show guests how military surveillance and reconnaissance has evolved from Revolutionary War spy tactics to modern satellite technology. Garden Canyon: Inhabited since 600 A.D., the Garden Canyon Village Site is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. There, archaeologists have found evidence of Hohokam, Mogollon, Trincheras and Casa Grandes cultures. The Garden Canyon Pictograph Site has 53 pictographs (painted rock art) from some of its earliest residents, as well as Apache pictographs from the 1700s. A short stroll away is Rappell Cliffs Rock Shelter Site, where the rock art is thought to date back to 1300 C.E. West. Take a self-guided tour of one of southeastern Arizona’s most complete ghost towns. Stroll past a post office, general store, homes, saloon, jail and schoolhouse, which serves as the museum and visitor center, staffed by volunteers who will regale you with stories about shootouts, train robberies and strict schoolmarms.

Outdoors Stargazing: Amateur astronomers can find a host of stargazing opportunities in southern Arizona because of Sierra Vista’s dark sky ordinances and vast, unlit county lands, which help reduce astronomy photolight pollution, making the stars shine even brighter. In total, there are 16 observatories in the area. San Pedro Valley Observatory is a favorite as it specializes in individualized experiences. The owners recently purchased new telescopes and upgraded the facilities. Guests can book a two-hour session for up to four people with one of the observatory’s professional astronomers.

Patterson Observatory on the University of Arizona Sierra Vista campus houses a 20-inch telescope, making it another hot spot for locals and guests alike. Each month, in fact, the Huachuca Astronomy Club holds “star parties” to introduce visitors to the wonders of the night skies. The monthly astronomy night focuses on astronomy events and general education about space and the night sky. San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area: With nearly 40 miles of riparian vegetation, this 56,000-acre area is teeming with plant and animal life. Highly popular with bird watchers (more than half of the known breeding bird species in the United States have been spotted here), visitors can hike solo or choose from regularly scheduled bird, interpretive and river walks led by docents from the San Pedro House. 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians and dogs are welcome. Ramsey Canyon Preserve: The Nature Conservancy’s Ramsey Canyon Preserve is world-renowned, thanks to the unique interplay of geology, biology, topography and climate that create a diverse habitat for plant and animal life. The 280-acre preserve provides a haven for over 170 varieties of birds, including 14 species of hummingbirds. Inside the visitor center is the kid-friendly “Please Touch” Room with bird nests, snakeskins and other wildlife bits. Street Biking: Hopping in the saddle— the bicycle saddle—and exploring southeast Arizona is easier than almost anywhere else in the nation. Whether your bike has skinny tires or knobby ones, or you ride astride a single-speed cruiser, Sierra Vista is the place to start your bicycle adventure. Road cyclists looking for long, winding roads with low traffic can’t beat the stretches of asphalt in and around Sierra Vista. Recently formally designated a “Bicycle Friendly Community” by the League of American Bicyclists, Sierra Vista is located along U.S. Bicycle Route 90, part of the transcontinental network of designated bikeable roadways. Mountain Biking: Mountain bikers can find miles of single track trails in the Huachuca Mountains, just a short ride from your hotel. One of the most popular jumping on points is along Ramsey Canyon Road at Brown Canyon Ranch. The Brown Canyon Trail gains about 1,900 feet in elevation and connects with the Hamburg Trail, making a nice loop ride; be sure to take the well-traveled jog to avoid the Miller Peak Wilderness Area. Popular with

experienced riders, Brown Canyon gets a little gnarly with the elevation gain and rocky terrain, but the reward is breathtaking views and smooth, flatter trails in open areas. A gentler ride is the Perimeter Trail, gaining only 834 feet in an 8.5-mile loop. Hiking: Sierra Vista marks the southern terminus of the Arizona National Scenic Trail, an 820-mile cross-state route that traverses mountains, deserts, canyons, forests and communities from Mexico to Utah. Along the way, you’ll experience some of the most breathtaking landscapes in North America. The trail is free and is open every day with easy on and off points for day hikes or longer treks. Ash Canyon is also a popular option and is easily accessible by car.

Food and Drink Wine: In the heart of Arizona’s premier wine regions, Sierra Vista is ideally situated near Sonoita and Patagonia to the west and Willcox to the east. Rich soil, high elevation, cool nights and warm days are a vintner’s dream. If planning a weekend or longer stay in the area, take advantage of the more than two dozen tasting rooms within an hour or so practically in any direction of the heart of the city, including: • Dos Cabezas WineWorks • Flying Leap Vineyards • Hannah’s Hill Vineyard • Keeling-Schaefer Vineyards Tasting Room • Kief-Joshua Vineyards • Lawrence Dunham Vineyards • Lightning Ridge Cellars • Passion Cellars • Rune Wines • Silver Strike Winery Tasting Room • Sonoita Vineyards • Village of Elgin Tasting Room • Wilhelm Family Vineyards • Zarpara Vineyard Dine: Have a hankering spicy kimchee, Old World German breads or down-home American eats? You’ll find it in Sierra Vista’s foodie scene with dozens of locally owned restaurants serving American and international fare. Chefs from around the globe have brought their culinary heritage and set up shop in Sierra Vista. Some locally recommended favorites include the German Café, Sunna’s and Indochine. t’s easy to appreciate desert life in January when temperatures are in the 70s and outdoor activities include hiking instead of shoveling snow. However, during the summer months when the heat is relentless and storm clouds evaporate before breaking the city limits, I recommend swimming in a pool you didn’t clean, sipping on a cocktail you didn’t mix and sleeping in a bed with cool sheets you didn’t wash. This situation calls for a staycation. May the following options provide you with the perfect oasis to fall in love with the Valley of the Sun again. Visit the resorts' websites for summer specials and be enticed with these great adult getaways.

ANDAZ SCOTTSDALE RESORT & SPA

Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen at Andaz Scottsdale

Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa celebrates all things local with a mix of posh sophistication and a convivial spirit. The resort reflects Arizona, a place where art and nature coexist without boundaries. The spectacular Turquoise Pool is a perfect spot to cool off. Relax in a private cabana, featuring comfortable furnishings, warm wood accents, privacy curtains and flat-screen TVs. The pool bar menu includes light, casual bites like ceviche, grilled wraps and skewers, along with a selection of refreshing drinks and even spiked Popsicles. Then, step into the new Palo Verde Spa & Apothecary and create your own signature summer scent with the True Essence Massage, including a personalized aroma created with soothing essential oils. Top off your day at Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen, the hub of the action. Enjoy snacks such as house-made beef brisket, ostrich or lamb jerky, lavender almonds, crispy pork belly or blistered shishito peppers, accompanied by inventive cocktails, inspired by the nature and folklore of the desert. Each glass tells a story, such as the smoking Mercury Mirage, recalling the “Dreamy Draw” mercury mine that rendered its miners a bit woozy from nerve damage. Learn more at AndazScottsdale.com.

THE HERMOSA INN Hermosa Inn

Hermosa Inn

The Hermosa Inn is a luxury boutique resort with a story that begins in the 1930s. A cowboy artist named Lon Megargee built “Casa Hermosa” as his art studio and residence. After switching hands a few times, the Hermosa evolved from being a quaint guest ranch to what it is today. Guests may be greeted with a signature prickly pear lemonade and scented, chilled hand towels; however, its strong artistic roots and unmistakable Arizona ambiance are a constant reminder of its rich history. The resort is situated on 6 acres of Sonoran Desert landscape with panoramic mountain views. They recently underwent major renovations that included 10 deluxe hideaway casitas. Old West meets modern luxury with European white oak floors, beehive fireplaces, secluded patios and luxurious bathrooms with both a clawfoot tub and a glass-enclosed shower. Cool off with a dip in the pool and enjoy complimentary chilled treats served poolside. Visit LON’s Last Drop, their cozy, casual bar, to partake in an Arizona brew. After dark, stop by LON’s, the Hermosa’s signature restaurant. Chef Jeremy Pacheco creates globally inspired Arizona fare such as the Alaskan halibut and Kauai shrimp or fennel-honey glazed Scottish salmon. Pacheco salutes the whimsical nature of Megargee’s art with desserts like LON’s Signature Cowboy Candy Bar. Learn more at HermosaInn.com. CONTINUED >

Local’s Choice

WE ALL SCREAM FOR

ICE CREAM LOCAL SWEET SPOTS FOR COLD TREATS ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON

T

he weather has hit triple digits, and, besides moving from one air-conditioned location to the next, there’s no better way to cool down during the hot summer months than the classic frozen treat: ice cream. Luckily for locals, the Valley is full of some delightful eateries that specialize in all things chilled and delicious.

CREAMISTRY Creamistry.com

• New location at the Scottsdale Quarter; also located at Scottsdale Waterfront, Uptown Plaza at Central and Camelback and 44th Street and Indian School in Phoenix. • Founded in 2013 in California, Creamistry is a franchise where “science and dessert collide” as customers choose an ice cream base, one of nearly 40 flavors and toppings. Everything is then mixed together with liquid nitrogen for a flashy finish. Patrons can choose from ice cream bowls, cones, shakes, floats and more. It’s as much of a show as it is a tasty treat. • Popular flavors include birthday cake, blood orange sorbet, Madagascar vanilla bean and sea salt caramel.

34

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | July 2017

SPLURGE ICE CREAM AND CANDY SHOP SplurgePhx.com

• Located at The Orchard Phoenix, a 2-acre venue at 7100 N. 12th St. in Phoenix. • Owned by Ken and Lucia Schnitzer alongside their business partner, Jerry Monsoor, Splurge’s menu has 18 toppings and about a dozen different flavors to choose from, with cones in a variety of shapes and sizes, including gluten-free. There is not just ice cream; it’s a great locale for gelato and root beer floats, too. • Summer’s top seasonal flavors include prickly pear sorbet and mango sorbet.

SWEET PROVISIONS SweetProvisionsAZ.com

• Located at 8120 N. Hayden Road in Scottsdale. • Lead by chef and owner Christopher Collins, Sweet Provisions is unique because all of its ice cream-centric concoctions are made out of ice cream created with Arizona dairy and local ingredients. In addition to ice cream, there are pies, cookies, brownies and other baked treats. • Favorites include banana splits and old-school floats.

Photography by Steve Shankman

THE BAKED BEAR TheBakedBear.com/Scottsdale

• Located at 7366 E. Shea Blvd., #106, in Scottsdale. • Move over ice cream scoops—the Baked Bear features made-to-order ice cream sandwiches. Its original cookie recipes are baked from scratch and served fresh out of the oven daily with craft homemade ice cream. Rob Clark and Anthony Velez own the popular ice cream sandwich concept. • Bear Batter ice cream is the signature flavor at The Baked Bear. It's a bright blue cake batter flavored ice cream mixed with fudge and brownie bits.
