Fond Farewells & New Beginnings

S

pring has finally arrived, and all the tell-tale signs of it are clear: days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, flowers are starting to pop-up along the roadside and the promise of summer lingers in the air. For many, spring is a time of growth, renewal and new beginnings with the coming of a fresh, brighter season. Yet spring is also a time for fond farewells too, as we pack up our favorite winter sweaters and blankets and recall all the warm, cherished memories of the holidays spent with friends and family behind us.

This sentiment rings especially true to me this spring, as I will be saying a most fond farewell as the Editor of Paradise Valley Lifestyle Magazine. It has truly been such a pleasure and humbling experience being the Editor of this magazine and having the opportunity to serve my community through the stories that we bring forth every month. Our motto here at Lifestyle Publications has always been “Inspired by Community,” and it is you, our readers and residents, that have truly inspired me during my time here. I feel so fortunate to have been able to meet with so many incredible individuals, businesses and philanthropic organizations who have opened both their hearts and homes to share their passions and give me a glimpse as to why they are so devoted to each of their individual causes—it has been a truly life-changing experience.

t’s officially spring, which, for many, means it’s time to plant all the flowers, fruits and vegetables possible while the weather is still tolerable. Even though continuous triple digits are just around the corner, Christine Fortman, owner of Berridge Nurseries, shares that there are still many plants that can bloom in the desert during spring, and year-round. Given that Berridge Nurseries has been in business for nearly 80 years, she is equipped with an abundance of knowledge on all things local flora and fauna. “In 1938, my grandfather, Jim Berridge Jr., founded what continues today; a full service garden center with a commitment to providing the Valley with top-quality products and expert service,” says Fortman. “Berridge employees are some of the most well-trained experts in the industry today, many of whom have been with this nursery for more than 30 years.” Berridge Nurseries grows more than 5,000 roses each year in more than 100 varieties, in addition to lush annuals and perennials, and herbs and vegetables. They also offer premium, often hard-tofind specimen trees, shrubs, cacti, grasses and bonsai. “Seasons by Berridge is a home and garden décor shop that provides beautiful, trendy products that introduce new colors and textures with an emphasis on holiday designs for the home, and we have the area’s finest greenhouse that offers a full line of flowering and indoor houseplants,” she explains. This month is a busy one at Berridge Nurseries. On April 1-2, the nursery will host the Desert Valley Orchid Society for

its annual show and plant sale. Then, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, April 8, Berridge Nurseries will host its annual Art-in-the-Garden event, which “offers local artists a unique outdoor setting in the nursery amid f lowering plants to display their artwork,” says Fortman. The event will feature local artists’ painting, pottery, jewelry and more, alongside a farmers’ market with food trucks and cooking and gardening demonstrations. BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS (CON TI N U ED)

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR GARDEN SPRING PL ANTING TIPS F R O M T H E E X P E R T S AT BERRIDGE NURSERIES

L AV EN D ER Â Great garden border plant: The dark purple flower of the Spanish variety grows low and wide, and has showy blooms in spring. French lavender has the more traditional gray leaves, weathers the summer heat better, and will bloom from October to May. Full morning sun in well-draining soil is recommended.

C AL I B R AC H OA Continuous bloomer: A perennial flower that is best planted in a decorative container pot, as its abundant, petunia-like flower will cascade down the side.

D I AN T H US Sun lover that blooms year-round: Removing spent flowers will prolong bloom time and help produce a fuller plant. Plant these evenly spaced in flowerbeds or pots for good air circulation, and in an area that receives morning sun. 20

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | April 2017

S Q UA S H Easy to grow and often prolific: There is a wide diversity of bush and vining forms of squash that are grouped as summer or winter types, depending on days to maturity and harvest periods. The plants like to be in a sunny garden that is full of soil rich in manure and compost.

TO M ATO E S Heirloom vs. Hybrid: A hybrid plant does not come from true saved seed, but rather is cross-pollinated to pick the best traits so it results in a variety that can have a bigger size and better disease resistance over another hybrid. An heirloom plant comes from true seed and can have greater flavor.

PE P P ER S Hot weather performers: Plant these in well-drained soil, allowing it to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot. Fertilize every three to four weeks using a higher potash formula.

BASIL The most common type is sweet basil, but all varieties want to be planted in a sunny, well-draining location. In the summer, four hours of morning sun is ideal.

ERIC LUOMA OF CACTUS FLOWER FLORISTS SHARES SOME E ASY STEPS FOR RECRE ATING HIS “ROADSIDIA” BOUQUE T ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY DAVID APEJI

actus Flower imports blooms from around the world. But when Eric Luoma wants something that looks, feels and smells like Scottsdale, he keeps his eye peeled on the side of the road and creates a “Roadsidia bouquet. He has a good sense of humor, but also recognizes the value in slowing down to smell the creosote.

How-To 1. Forage for an assortment of greenery, such as creosote, which smells sweet like rain even when its dry. Other common desert plants such as sage, brittlebush, white flowers from a blooming yucca, senna and Mexican bird of paradise can be found alongside the road or in your yard. 2. Trim one-half inch off each stem and place the flowers and greenery in water as soon as possible. 3. Arrange your new flora in a vase or container at home and CONTINUED > combine with other fresh flowers.

Lilly of the Valley is coveted by many brides, and costs between $50 to $75 a stem. The small, delicate flower is six to eight inches long and can usually only be purchased for two or three weeks during the winter. M O ST P O P U L AR : The rose is the most symbolic and requested flower. About Cactus Flower Florists

H O W PA S S I O N B LO O M E D I N TO A B US I N E S S Everyone has a flower story, but few compare to that of Eric Luoma. He’s been in the flower business since he was four years old, giving him a lifetime of colorful memories. His mother, Sharron, was passionate about flowers. In the 1970s, she opened a flower shop and became one of the first women entrepreneurs in Scottsdale. And although one may think she named her business after the beautiful blooms in the desert, she didn’t. Sharron named it after her favorite movie starring Goldie Hawn, Cactus Flower. Cactus Flower Florists has always been a family affair, and their current location is only 100 feet from where it all began. The torch was passed to Eric and his sister, Kristina Dyrr, in the mid 1990s, and their dad joined the team when he retired from Honeywell. However, the business has changed since the days when the Luoma children dressed up as Easter bunnies and elves to deliver flowers. Expanding to five retail stores in the Valley now allows them to share quality flowers and thoughtful gifts with people from across the country, but the important things remain the same. “Our family has been helping the community celebrate life’s milestones for 45 years,” says Eric. “We give people a place to go when they don’t know what to say or how to say it.” Find a store near you at CactusFlower.com and explore more options at FlowerShop.com.

If you have an attitude that your life is going forward and that something like this is just a blip in the radar, you can move forward,” says Brue. “But I still don’t think it can be repeated enough how crucial education and awareness is to saving your own life, and the lives of others.” ANGELA MACLEAN

The host of the weekend also recalls how that night changed her life. “It all happened so fast, yet the severity of it was incomprehensible,” says MacLean. “I couldn’t believe how something like this could happen to what appeared to be such a healthy woman, and who had always been so.” “Now, every time I go to the doctor’s office I make sure that they know my family has a history of heart disease, because even though I am healthy right now, you never know what can happen, and I’m always aware of that.” CHAR HUBBLE

Hubble came away from her mother’s experience with heart disease with an increased reverence for the American Heart Association’s mission. “I really wanted to make a difference in the community, because if the American Heart Association had not done everything they did for my mother she wouldn’t be here today. I will always be grateful for that,” says Hubble. She brought her passion to Phoenix and proves her gratitude through service. She was a Heart Ball committee member for 10 years before becoming the 2017 Heart Ball Chairman. “If I can raise awareness and can save one life this year by being Heart Ball Chairman with the money that we raise, I would have done my job,” says Hubble. A truly heartfelt sentiment expressed by one of the biggest hearts in the community. The tradition continues with the 58th Annual Heart Ball on November 18, 2017 at The Phoenician. SOUTHWEST AUTISM RESEARCH & RESOURCE CENTER CELEBRATES ITS TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY

ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY CARL SCHULTZ

ast year, PBS called Phoenix “the most autism-friendly city in the world,” and a lot of that honor is due to the work of Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC), which celebrates its 20th anniversary this month. “In 2016, we provided more than 60,000 treatment hours to our clients, allowing nonverbal children to say their first words; schoolaged children to transition to the same classroom as their typical peers; and adults to secure and retain meaningful, competitive employment on a path to independence,” says Karen Scott, marketing and communications manager. She adds that SARRC has grown to become an internationally recognized organization dedicated to autism research, education, evidence-based treatment and community outreach. Scott also notes that the nonprofit offers a wide range of services for children, teens and adults — from early intervention to programs that help adults with autism live more independently. “New this year, we’re proud to offer diagnostic services to individuals of all ages, which is in response to the growing need for more qualified professionals who can accurately diagnose autism,” says Scott. 34

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | April 2017

April is also Autism Awareness Month and SARRC has many plans to spread the word, including a radio campaign with KTAR. “This month, SARRC is partnering with Bashas’ and Food City stores statewide,” says Scott. “Customers have a chance to make a donation at checkout that will go directly back to SARRC’s services and programs.” Another major highlight is their annual Community Breakfast, which takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, April 28 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. This year’s theme is “rEVOLUTION.” “At this year’s breakfast, we’ll be showcasing the revolution and evolution of SARRC over the last 20 years,” says Scott. “We have some exciting highlights, including a special focus on some of the organization’s most revolutionary leaders over time. We’ll also be sharing updates on our latest research initiatives, innovative programs and services, and showcasing successes from the previous year.” For those who wish to support SARRC, Scott says that the organization is home to a variety of volunteer opportunities, too. To learn more about SARRC, please visit AutismCenter.org. The 2017 Community Breakfast is free and open to the public but registration is required by April 14.
