Memories of Home

A

lthough I’ve lived on the West Coast for almost 15 years now, I always look back at my childhood home in a small little Connecticut town with a sense of nostalgia. Maybe it’s because I spent my carefree years of youth there, or maybe it’s because I lived there the longest of any place so far. Either way, I will always consider that cheerful white house with its bright red door and shutters and large oak tree in the front yard my true home. This year, that sense of nostalgia came on full-force when I visited my father over the holidays and we decided to watch old home movies. As soon as that house flashed up on the screen, a flood of memories came washing over me. It seemed as if I could feel the flickering flames of the grand fireplace cast their hot glow on my face as I snuggled up on the couch; and could smell the aroma of pumpkin spice wafting through the kitchen as I helped my mom bake pie while the fall leaves fell outside. I couldn’t help but smile as I thought of all the memories that house held, and couldn’t help feel a little ache of longing once the videos were over. As I sat on the couch, deep in thought, my dad called me in to help him prepare Christmas dinner. We then spent the rest of the evening laughing and talking while making tons of Italian food and enjoying every last bite until our hearts, and stomachs, were content before sitting down to a Christmas movie marathon. A few weeks later, I was thinking about the time I spent with my father over Christmas, and much to my surprise, felt that same sense of nostalgia as I did when thinking about my childhood home. I then realized it’s not the place the makes the memories, but the people you are with and the cherished moments you spend with them; and that’s a lesson I will take with me no matter where I go. In the “Home Issue” of Paradise Valley Lifestyle, we take a look at some of the wonderful people and businesses dedicated to creating homes and spaces where these memories can be made, such as The Mackey Martin Group, Mountainscapers Landscaping and RedRover Living. Thank you for enriching our communities in such beautiful ways!

INSPIRING INTERIORS REDROVER LIVING CREATES ONE-OF-A-KIND, PERSONALIZED SPACES ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON

R

obert Shields, COO and managing partner at RedRover Living, loves to encourage his interior design clients to look within themselves when it comes to designing their personal living spaces. “My advice to every client in creating their home is this: ‘Be yourself, everyone else is already taken,’ a quote from Oscar Wilde,’” he says. Originally from Ajo, Arizona, Shields started out as a classical pianist and was highly trained in both music and art. Still, inspired by a childhood friend that he now works with, he couldn’t resist delving into interior design, and has since built a notable career in the industry both in the U.S. and abroad. “My western background influenced much of my work, be it traditional or contemporary,” he says. “I have now returned to my Arizona roots to begin a partnership with my childhood friend, Barbara Hallum, and together we have started a new design business, based here in Scottsdale, called RedRover Living.” 14

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | March 2017

While he can expertly put together an entire home, Shields admits to having a personal fondness for designing powder rooms and bathrooms. “They [powder rooms and bathrooms] grant the opportunity to provide luxury, generosity and hospitality for your guests, as well as for yourself, in the most personal and intimate way,” he explains. “The math and puzzle side of my brain loves the challenge of fitting all of the components together perfectly. The material resources available are unbelievable right now, and the artful use of flowing water always delivers a sense of wonder.” With a passion for creating one-of-a-kind spaces, Shields is always willing to assist his clients in personalizing their interiors. “Personal touches in a space, such as family photographs, objet d'art, works of art etc., are essential in making a home,” he says. “I always encourage my clients to show me the things that they love and, if they desire, try and expand on them by helping to build a collection.”

QUARTERS

GENTLEMAN’S

Once a home’s interior is completed, Shields typically lets the design speak for itself. “I generally don't make major changes once I design a space until it's time to completely start over, as every element used has been carefully considered,” he says. With personalization in mind though, he does encourage his clients to change up the home’s artwork as desired, just to keep things fresh. “I'm passionate about art and love to rotate artwork throughout the year,” he says. “Not only does the change in art bring a new perspective to any room, it also provides one the opportunity to expand their collection.” To learn more about RedRover Living, visit RedRoverLiving.com.

The targeted lighting plan in these living spaces allows for elegant nighttime entertaining and brings focus to the art collection and design details. A warm palette of dark wood and bronze tones with sand colored walls enhances the color saturation in the artwork.

The custom-designed, forged iron art hanging system, iron and glass coffee table, leather and nail head accents, and “diamond back” pattern in the drapery trim add masculine western overtones to this sophisticated yet intimate conversation area. CONTINUED >

This very odd, L-shaped dining room presented a unique challenge when trying to comfortably seat eight for dinner. “I designed a large, kidney-shaped table to bridge the two areas into a single space that would accommodate eight fully upholstered chairs,” Shields says. The color palette is also consistent between the living and dining room spaces in order to expand the small rooms into a single, unified space.

“This restful bedroom takes me back to the elegant, smooth Palo Verde trees and golden Arizona sunbursts that are part of my heritage,” Shields notes. “I was raised with the largest Palo Verde tree ever recorded in my grandparents’ garden, which shaded a patio where I spent many lovely days growing up in Ajo.”

The en-suite bath is a synthesis of all of the elements, materials, colors and elegance of the entire home. “I love creating spa-like baths because it allows for the opportunity to create luxury in the most intimate and personal way,” Shields says.

Landscape Lore

Mountainscapers Landscaping Creates Show-Stopping Outdoor Living Spaces ARTICLE ALISON STANTON

S

ean Andersen got his start in the landscaping business as an entrepreneurial 15-year-old, carrying his lawn mower behind him on his bicycle as he rode around Paradise Valley. After earning a degree in Engineering and Construction from Northern Arizona University, Andersen founded Mountainscapers Landscaping in 1994, in North Phoenix. Every day, Andersen and his crew work with Valley and Flagstaff homeowners to construct amazing, original outdoor spaces that are personalized to fulfill the needs of each client. “We create vibrant, integrated and beautiful spaces that are not only functional, but are also designed to improve our clients’ social, spiritual, physical and emotional well-being,” Andersen says, adding that he is truly driven by the desire to provide the best possible customer service. 18

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | March 2017

As part of this commitment to service, Andersen is constantly looking for innovative solutions and new technology to provide his clients with the highest quality products to make their yards look truly incredible. He even enjoys inventing new products that will help achieve these goals. Recently, Andersen was awarded a patent for his latest fountain technology and design. Called The Elemental Fountain, he installed one in his latest residential project, which involved completely transforming the unused outdoor space of a mid-century home. “The Elemental Fountain is mesmerizing,” Andersen says, adding that it is “a natural balance between water and gravity, and a marriage of two opposing forces: fire and water.” The massive water flow of 10,000 gallons per hour cascades in a continuous layer of water that looks like a curved sheet of glass encompassing the flame, only without ever extinguishing it.

“Programmable LED lighting causes the water to glow with color, and creates a range of ambiance possibilities, from calm and relaxing to vibrant and high-energy,” he says. In addition to installing The Elemental Fountain, Andersen and his team created an overall “Comfortable Contemporary” design aesthetic for the recent project. “We introduced steel as a contrasting element, along with an abundance of natural materials to create a welcoming, spectacular entrance,” he says, adding that the entryway is now flanked by large boulders punctuated with a custom-crafted gabion (steel wire/stone) mailbox. The front yard was graded to add multiple elevations, and the pathway to the home is now curved with an elevated bridge made of natural-looking, acid-stained concrete with saw cuts for added interest. The once unused area also includes 25 trees, boulders, lush greenery, succulents and flowering shrubs, which Andersen hand-selected to create a micro-climate that will help reduce the intense summer heat. The side of the yard is dedicated to an edible garden, with an artistically-crafted steel gate dividing front and back. A hand-crafted wood shade structure with steel brackets and trellis was added to cover the extended front patio, creating the perfect private retreat for “front porch visiting,” and a great sanctuary to enjoy the front yard within. The pool was also completely remodeled, with Andersen and his team scaling it down to a play pool size and resurfacing it with plaster. Andersen’s fountain technology was also used to create a unique pool fountain that encourages human interaction. One can stand in the middle of the fountain and be untouched by the water, except for the circumference. The rush of water creates a sound that energizes you, and the falling water on your shoulders is like a soft, relaxing massage. CONTINUED >

In addition, the backyard now features another custom shade structure complete with lighting and ceiling fans, which provide a comfortable place to relax and socialize with friends and family. While the plants, bridge and other hardscaping features all helped improve the appearance of the outdoor space, The Elemental Fountain is definitely the proverbial show stopper—or in this case, passerby stopper. “It engages the senses, and it will simultaneously revitalize and relax you,” he says. “From a practical purpose, it provides a dramatic anchor that creates and defines the space, provides movement, warmth, light, stirs curiosity, and leaves a lasting impression. Cars are always stopping in front of the house to stare in wonder.” For more information about Mountainscapers Landscaping, please visit Mountainscapers.com.

or local design professionals and homeowners in need of homebuilding products, materials and services, the PV Design Center has always been the go-to place. However, this spring, the PV Design Center is transitioning into the PV New Home Center—a most welcome change that will certainly benefit its customers and the community. “The PV Design Center is currently transforming into the PV New Home Center and going in a slightly new direction,” says manager Melissa Towe. “In the past, it was paired with BedBrock Developers, contained only one vendor/subcontractor for each building/remodeling aspect and packaged as the ‘best of the best.’ The PV New Home Center is developing into a full design/idea center with space for 80 or more displays that are open to the public.” Towe says that the grand re-opening of the PV New Home Center is tentatively scheduled for the end of March. “The facility consists of two separate buildings and beautiful exterior grounds containing two functioning kitchens, a coffee bar, BBQs and a unique light-up bar equipped with a beer tap and wine fridge. We encourage each vendor to utilize the center for company seminars and public events,” she says. In addition, Chef Jon-Paul Hutchins will be hosting cooking classes several times a week starting March 25. 22

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | March 2017

Towe also notes that Showroom Number 2 was remodeled a year ago and is the official Sub-Zero and Wolf showroom, featuring a variety of working appliances for consumers to test out. “Paired with Caesarstone countertops, Reliance Custom Cabinetry, and tile from Villagio, it has a much more contemporary feel,” she says of Showroom Number 2. “Showroom Number 1 is currently in the planning phase for a remodel to steer away from the current Old World style it reflects now. The beautiful exterior grounds in the back will have a fire pit and fountain to enhance the already serene environment it is now.” In addition to catering to potential customers, the center will also be hosting monthly galas, charitable events, classes and more. “Even more exciting, this is Paradise Valley’s only zoned retail location,” she says. “There is a prestigious reputation that is carried with the PV name, and the center is at a prime location on Lincoln Drive across from the Camelback Inn. Most vendor showrooms and design centers are located in the North Scottsdale and Phoenix areas, so we are lucky to create a living showcase for the public to come and obtain full ‘A to Z’ information for their new homebuilding or remodeling needs.” To learn more about the PV New Home Center, visit PVNewHomeCenter.com.

“Outdoor cooling systems are quite the necessity during the hot Arizona summer months. I highly recommend this high-pressure system over mist!”

Modern Western Farmhouse Arcadia's Nordon Estates introduces a Modern Western Farmhouse, Blending Past With Present ARTICLE DANIELLE ACCOVELLI | PHOTOGRAPHY DREWETT WORKS

A

neighborhood steeped in history, Arcadia is known for its unique ability to blend the past and present together. However, there have been some significant changes in home development happening in the area over the past year, namely on East Exeter Boulevard, which used to house the historic Nordon Manor. The 18th century replica Pennsylvania Farmhouse was formerly owned by long-time residents Don and Norma Lo Piccolo. In 2009, the Mackey Martin Group— with mother Mackey Martin and sons Trey and Kelly Martin— acquired the listing, and in 2016, they sold the property to a local real estate investment group. The investment group then brought on architect firm Drewett Works and builder Sage Luxury Homes to begin work to completely revitalize the original estate, with plans to add six more custom homes to the surrounding area. The end product will be Nordon Estates—a completely unique subdivision unlike anything Arcadia has ever seen before.

A NEW KIND OF FARMHOUSE

The plans for the second estate, located at 5134 East Exeter Boulevard, are still in the works, but the home already promises the pinnacle of

24

luxury living. Designed in a daring modern western farmhouse style, the estate is tentatively set to feature clean, crisp lines throughout, exposed concrete flooring and steel-clad roofing, all softened by rustic wooden beams lining its soaring ceilings. The home will also fully capitalize on the breathtaking panoramic views of Camelback Mountain through a series of beautifully-wrought glass walls. The experience begins as soon as one enters the home, where a stunning glass-clad hallway will lead into an expansive open-concept living area. High vaulted ceilings with massive wooden beams will combine with glass-covered walls to create a bright, open feel quintessential of Arcadia’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle. One particularly impressive area of the home will be the master wing, situated on the main level. Here, one will pass through a glass, gallery-style hall perfect for both displaying artwork and catching a glimpse of the views out back before transitioning into the master suite, study and indoor courtyard. Other stand out features planned for the home include an upstairs children’s wing; a front kitchen for entertaining and a back cook’s kitchen; a large

guest suite with easy garage access; walk-out balconies and decks to enjoy the views alfresco; and a spectacular, almost fully glass-walled game room. “In the end, it will look like a collection of different barn-like buildings all clad together under one steel roof,” says Mackey Martin. “That’s the whole concept; the rooms all have their own uniqueness but are brought together in harmony with the roof.” THE ARCADIA LIVING EXPERIENCE

In keeping with Arcadia's lifestyle of neighborhoods and sense of community, this home sits on an oversized parcel and will include entertaining areas in its massive backyard and terraced gardens in the front yard, typical of the vegetation and inviting curb appeal in this sought after area of Arcadia with its unparalleled views of Camelback Mountain. “Arcadia, especially along Exeter Boulevard, is really defined by front yard living, and homes are designed so that people driving, walking or riding their bikes by can stop by the front courtyard and sit down and have a drink and just talk for a while,” says Sage Lentz of Sage Luxury Homes. “That’s what really makes Arcadia great.”

PRESERVING A LEGACY

When the home is finished, it will stand as a distinctive modern western farmhouse with its more contemporary, industrial look; yet it will still be in perfect harmony with the other homes in the subdivision, as all will have that same farm home sensibility. And all will be direct descendants of the main home, paying homage to the original Nordon Manor. “The homes will all be stand-alone different, but you will also see a lot of similarities in the farmhouse feel that will tie into the main home, which is really the driver for the whole project,” says Trey Martin. In all aspects of what will eventually be Nordon Estates, The Mackey Martin Group displays a deep-rooted commitment to both preserving a long-standing legacy and creating a new one that will influence the community for years to come. “Arcadia is our home; we grew up here and now it’s our chance to give back to our home neighborhood,” says Kelly Martin. “To leave our home with something this amazing, you couldn’t ask for more.”

DARLENE SHEPHARD KNOWS THE WAY TO A YOUNG GIRL’S HE AR T ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY BRIAN O'MALLEY

O

n Sunday afternoons Darlene Shephard packs her bag with lollipops and card games before heading to Florence Crittenton for visiting hours with the girls. They sit around tables in the café; talking, laughing and playing games. It’s a cheerful place canvased with colorful walls and sunlight pouring through its many windows. There’s a drink station against the wall with sugar- free options for everyone. Admittedly, Miss Darlene is a bit of a rule breaker with her sweet treats though. “My claim to fame is I started like a big sister and now they call me grandma,” says Shephard. Forty years ago she joined the Florence Crittenton Auxiliary, and has poured her heart into the program ever since. She’s served on the board of directors, helped with events, and always pays holiday visits. She also helps with parties and ensures every girl’s birthday is celebrated. Tuesdays, she volunteers at Flo’s on 7th, a thrift shop founded by the auxiliary. “All the proceeds go to the girls. If you can’t give money, we need good things,

26

gently used. We are proud of what we have on the floor,” says Shephard. Florence Crittenton was founded 120 years ago

and is the second oldest nonprofit organization in Arizona. Once a home for unwed mothers, the

program has since transformed to meet the needs of today’s youth. Their mission is to give every girl whose life they touch safety, hope and opportunity.

They help at-risk girls ages 10 to 25 overcome issues of abuse, neglect, teen pregnancy, teen parenting and behavioral and mental health problems. One of their many programs is residential, housing forty girls in their four cottages. “I was never blessed with children. I found I could give myself to these girls and be their family. We aren’t there to replace their family, but we are the family they need then and there,” says Shephard. “I bring them candy and cookies and play Spoons. Leaving them happy and full of sugar. When the staff sees me they say, ‘Oh no! She’s back!’ But I try to think of healthier snacks for them, too.” Miss Darlene is the grandma every girl needs. She listens and has a “what’s said

at the table, stays at the table” policy; unless there is an issue concerning any one of the girls’ safety. “I can’t ask questions, but I don’t need to know their backgrounds. I’m there just for them. I don’t judge,” says Shephard. “They all have stories to tell and all I need to do is keep my ears and my heart open.” Shephard is being honored with the Visionary Award during Florence Crittenton’s 15th Annual Teaming up for Girls Luncheon on March 16. The featured guest for this inspiring fundraising event is Simone Biles, 2016 Olympic gold medalist, World Champion and foster care advocate. “If someone says a swear word, one of the other girls will say, ‘Hey, be respectful! Not in front of Miss Darlene!’ I want them to respect me, but more importantly, I want them to respect themselves.” For more information on Florence Crittenton, please visit, FloCrit.org.
