Giving Thanks - For Our Community and More

Dear Readers,

Welcome to our first ever issue of Paradise Coast City Lifestyle! Each month, we will strive to bring you stories of both local residents and businesses that you will find insightful and interesting.

In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back and engaging with our communities in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and achieving goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters.

Sports, the arts, and being a part of charitable initiatives have always been an important part of my life.  For me, they are all are a source of enrichment, learning, bonding, and inspiration.

I am personally thrilled about the upcoming professional sports seasons we have coming up in our area; that of our 3x Kelly Cup Champion Florida Everblades, and new-kids-on-the-block USL FC Naples. We wish both teams the best of luck in their upcoming seasons!

We also are fortunate to live in a community that promotes the arts and culture.  I love living in and supporting The Bayshore Arts District, while taking advantage of the many cultural experiences across Marco Island and Naples.

Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, learning from and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who will help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you.  This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect.

Wishing you and your families the best during this season, and I hope to see you around at a local sporting event, art or cultural center, or giving back in the community soon!

A NEW ERA FOR PRO SOCCER IN NAPLES

Interview with Head Coach Matt Poland

This year, Naples has been fortunate enough to form a pro soccer team and with that, hire a new head soccer coach! Matt Poland will be leading the team to victory as he dives deep into how he plans to cultivate a successful season.

He believes that by creating a positive and supportive environment, he can help his players reach their full potential. Throughout our conversation, Matt really wanted to emphasize the importance of community.

“It’s a significant contributing factor to a team’s success. We want the community to feel just as much a part of every win as we do.”

Matt’s coaching philosophy is grounded in developing rapport within the team and outside of it. Off the field, Matt is actively involved in local charities and initiatives, and he is dedicated to making a difference in the Naples area.

"We want to be role models for young people and make a difference," Matt says. His goal is to not only win games, but to also have a positive impact.

Matt Poland's coaching career has been marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence. With experience coaching in Finland and Chicago, Matt has developed a deep understanding of the game and a proven ability to build successful teams. His passion for developing young talent and his commitment to creating a positive team culture, have made him a respected figure in the coaching arena.

As Matt looks ahead to the future, he expresses his excitement about the opportunity to build a successful pro soccer team in Naples.

"I'm committed to creating a team the community can be proud of," he says. "We want to be a positive

EVERBLADES RELENTLESS PURSUIT TOWARDS EXCELLENCE

Tendy interview with Cam Johnson

Cam Johnson's journey to the Everblades has been marked by hard work, dedication, and a passion for the game. After honing his skills in Michigan–where he’s from, Cam's professional career took him to various locations, including upstate New York, Milwaukee, and Charlotte. His experience on different teams has helped him develop a well-rounded understanding of the game and a strong work ethic. Cam recently came to Naples, bought a house, and welcomed a new baby, making the city his home. His commitment to the community is evident in his interactions with fans, especially the young ones.

"I always make sure I take pictures and give autographs," Cam explains. "It's a couple minutes out of your day, but it makes a huge impact."

His passion for goalkeeping is evident, and he's not afraid to share his knowledge with aspiring young athletes.

Beyond his on-ice performance, Cam is a dedicated community member. He's actively involved in local charities and events, and he's always willing to lend a helping hand. His positive attitude and enthusiasm for the sport will be a welcome addition to the Naples community.

As Cam reflects on his career, he offers advice to aspiring goalies:

"It's important to have a strong mental game. Believe in yourself and don't let setbacks discourage you. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the journey."

UNDERSTANDING GATOR LIFE IN NAPLES

Interview with Swampee

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING THE EVERBLADES' MASCOT?

I love getting to interact with the fans, especially the kids, but when they pull my tail, I’m tempted to bite them.

DO YOU EVER GET SCARED BY THE COMPETITION?

Nah, I'm not scared of anyone. When they get a penalty, I'm ready to gator roll.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SNACK?

I really like to sink my teeth into the Picadillo tacos at Cantina 109

HOW DID YOU BECOME THE EVERBLADES' MASCOT?

I was looking to cool off because it was so hot, and I

wandered into the ice arena. I saw them practicing, and that was the beginning of this tail!

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ASPIRING HOCKEY PLAYERS?

Just go out there and have a jawsome time.

ANY FAVORITE LOCAL HANGOUTS?

When I'm with my other gators, I do like to stop by The Peaks. They've got really good chicken sandwiches.

WHO DO YOU USUALLY HANG OUT WITH?

Cam, Chausey, and Lambo. We golf a lot.

I HEARD CAM JUST HAD A BABY! CAN WE EXPECT A MRS. SWAMPEE AND BABY GATORS IN THE NEAR FUTURE?

Oh snap! Look at the time, I gotta go!

OK, SEE YOU LATER ALLIGATOR!

the lives, struggles and triumphs of Southwest Florida’s ancient peoples, pioneers and those who made modern Marco Island what it is today. Lectures, concerts, programs and events are held throughout the year at this vibrant community gathering place. It all started 30 years ago when Marco Island Historical Society (MIHS) was formed by a dedicated group of community leaders with a passion for history and abiding love for their beautiful Marco Island home. Their vision — a future in which residents and visitors could learn about the fascinating history of the island many call paradise.

Their dream: to create a world-class historical museum. The entire community came together to make this dream a reality. More than $4.5 million dollars was raised, and the Collier County government donated land for the building and campus. The new museum opened in 2010, and this dynamic collaboration and partnership continues today.

as one of the finest pieces of pre-Columbian Native American art ever discovered in North America. Carved from native hardwood, the Key Marco Cat was created some 500 to 1,500 years ago by Southwest Florida’s early Calusa people, or their Muspa ancestors. It is currently on loan to MIHM from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History until April 2026. Fourteen companion artifacts discovered with it are also on loan from Penn Museum through March 2025.

MIHS Board President Mike O’Rourke remembers well the exciting groundswell of community-wide support that “CATapulted” the MIHS to success in bringing home the Key Marco Cat. As President of the Marco Island Historical Society Board of Directors for the past six years, he has a particular insight and deep connection to this special island community.

“Yet again, our community pulled together with great enthusiasm to

bring home the Key Marco Cat to preserve and present the history of Marco Island and to share it proudly with the world. The return of the Key Marco Cat to its place of origin was a major feat that would not have been possible without the kind of passionate determination and financial support that is unique to Marco Island and its residents,” notes O’Rourke. Four permanent exhibits at The Marco Island Historical Museum include:

Windows & Doors to History, a unique outdoor gallery of faux windows and doors that frame vivid scenes from Marco Island’s past from the Pleistocene, Archaic, Glades and Calusa periods to the pioneer period and modern Marco.

Paradise Found: 6,000 Years of People on Marco Island showcases more than 300 pre-Columbian Native American artifacts from Marco Island and surrounding areas, original artwork, replicas and interactive stations. A life-size Calusa village depicts the daily lives and customs of the island’s early peoples.

Pioneer Marco: A Tale of Two Villages chronicles the evolution of the island’s pioneer villages, with an in-depth look at Marco Island’s pioneers, industries, and lifestyles during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Rare photographs and objects, and full-size Cracker cabin with porch, rocking chairs and video gallery bring the period to life.

“WE HONOR AND THANK OUR COMMUNITY.”

Modern Marco Island spans the transformative period beginning in 1962 when the Mackle Brothers, developers and founders of the Deltona Corporation, visited Marco Island and envisioned its potential for large-scale community development. An original Deltona promotional film plays on a vintage television; a model of the early Marco Island Airways airliner “soars” across the gallery; and a replica of the “Tiki head” that adorned the bow of the early Marco Islander catamaran are just a few colorful high points.

“During this 30th anniversary year of Marco Island Historical Society and always, we honor and thank those who have gone before us and those who continue supporting us for the love of Marco Island, our history and our community,” notes CEO Pat Rutledge.

The Marco Island Historical Museum is located at 180 S. Heathwood Drive. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 9a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is free, and the site is fully ADA compliant and accessible to all visitors. For information, call 239.389.6447 or visit www.theMIHS.org .

““The Bayshore Arts District Board is proud to announce $50,000 has been raised to support the provision of affordable art studio space in our community!”

You know local professional artist, Dani Papa, was just there when you see paint marks, bold colors, and metal leaf everywhere. Together with his sister, Karina, this brother/sister artist duo have been making waves in the community. Working collaboratively on looks that command attention, both siblings made a splash at the recent Embellished Wearable Art Fashion Show hosted at Modani Furniture. After nearly a decade as an art teacher and mentor, Dani Papa turned his sights to more philanthropic efforts here in Collier County.

Community leader of the Bayshore Arts District (BAD), Amanda Jaron, sought out Dani and Karina’s help with organizing this fantastic event with an amazing team, all of whom had volunteered. Dani painted his signature garments while Karina constructed a look completely from recyclable materials. Newly appointed as the Director of Arts Programming for BAD, Dani Papa is excited to lend his standards, experience, and education to the rest of the Bayshore community for the future, just as he finishes his Masters Degree in fine arts online at Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD).

Amanda’s mission for this fundraiser was to provide the community with affordable studios for artists and designers located in The BAD near downtown Naples. After a night of strutting down the runway, The BAD Board is proud to announce that they have raised $50,000; all of which supports the fundraising goal to realize this vision.  A special THANK YOU to all involved!*
