LIFESTYLE LETTER
Welcome to 2024! A new year is upon us!
January 2024 PUBLISHER
Kyler Hendrickson kyler.hendrickson@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R I AL C O O R D I N ATO R
The start to a new year seems to always have a refreshing feel to it. It’s a small new beginning that allows us to reflect on the past and dream about the future. However, we can often get so focused on what we want to change at the beginning of the year that we forget to remember the things that we do well. We set our New Year’s resolutions, and if you are anything like me, they don’t typically stick through the full year. Does that mean we shouldn’t try? Absolutely not! If we never try, we will never have a chance to succeed. This year though, maybe we should try something different for one of our resolutions. What if we try to expand on something we did really well last year? What if we can take something great and make it even better? Where might that take us as individuals, as businesses, and as a community? In this issue of Papillion City Lifestyle, you will see this play out. The Papillion Landing is a great facility and an asset to our community, but what if they could expand on that by partnering with other organizations in our community to provide employment and recreational opportunities for those with cognitive and developmental disabilities? That’s exactly what they did. They took something great and made it even better! As you continue through these pages, you will find stories that follow this same theme. A restaurant owner who inherited something great, added to it, and made it even better. A food pantry that already did a great job of serving our community, but still re-envisioned themselves so they could serve even better. We even have tips from a local interior designer who explains how changing our lighting can make our homes even better. So, whereas we typically focus on physical health this time of year, and rightfully so, there is much more to health than just the physical aspect. Don’t get me wrong, we still included some healthy smoothie bowl recipes that are a delicious treat you can feel good about! However, this time we focus more of our attention on the health of our community, organizations, and individuals who give tribute to the past while working toward a better future. Happy New Year! Let’s make 2024 a success together!

COMMON GROUNDS
The Papillion Landing puts the "community" in "community center" and continues to find ways to include everyone in that open community. "The recreation department has a long history of great programs," said Tracy Stratman, Director of Recreation for the City of Papillion. "The benefit of the Landing is having a space to house it all."
"They've always had bingo during the week. As more participants were coming to the Landing, we noticed that individuals with cognitive disabilities wanted to take part," said Stratman. The 55+ Club invited these individuals to participate and donated prizes such as snacks. After only a few months, Stratman said they have more than 50 people playing bingo every first
“IT’S ABOUT PROVIDING A PLACE THAT BRINGS THE WHOLE COMMUNITY TOGETHER.” Before opening in 2020, Stratman said the city's recreation department offered programs, including the Daddy Daughter Dance at a local hall, and aquatic exercise classes at the high school pool. Having the Landing has given the city a central location. While the facility does have a paid membership site comparable to a commercial gym and an events area available for rent, a good portion of the Landing is open to all Papillion residents. "Now that we have a community space for community activities, it's another step in building that positive relationship with the places you live," she said. A goal of this positive relationship is welcoming everyone, including those with cognitive disabilities. For instance, the 55+ Club, Papillion's senior services program, launched its Bingo with Buddies event.
and third Thursday from 1-1:45 p.m. The Landing also partnered with 360 Community Services, an organization dedicated to the holistic care and development of those with developmental disabilities, to open the Common Grounds coffee shop. "They're individuals who want to have that sense of community like anyone else, and be treated like anyone else, and hold a job like anyone else. What better place to do that than a community center?" Stratman said. 360 Community Services CEO, Bill Ehegartner, echoed this sentiment of the Landing being the perfect place to unite everyone. "For us, it's about providing a place and a space that brings the whole community together. Hence the name, 'Common Grounds,'" said Ehegartner. Friends program, Ehegartner said he and Stratman recognized a need for a coffee shop. As a part of the day services for 360 Community Services, working at Common Grounds allows its employees to gain work experience, learn appropriate workplace behaviors, build confidence and self-esteem, and create communication skills. "The people who've been down there, interacting, it's just a coffee shop for them—but that's what we wanted. It's finding common ground with the community," he said, adding the community response has been incredibly positive and welcoming. When asked how the employees have responded to the program, he said, "All I'll ask you to do is go down there and grab a cup of coffee. You can tell by the smiles on their faces." The program has been so successful that 360 Community Services is in the works to launch two more similar coffee shops in other community centers soon.
“GRAB A CUP OF COFFEE”
Ehegartner encourages readers to visit the Common Grounds coffee shop, which is open to the public in the community portion of the Landing from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Stratman said she is proud of the Landing's inclusion and the community's response. "When people think of a community center, obviously community is part of the name," she said. "To be able to have a community center that has not only ongoing programs for those with disabilities but also job opportunities for those with disabilities, makes me very proud of my staff and what they do on a day-to-day basis."

A GUIDE TO SELECTING THE RIGHT LIGHTING FOR YOUR HOME ARTICLE BY MEGAN NELSON, NEST WITH THE NELSONS PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE FERGUSON LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY

Being a little (or a lot!) over the top gets a bad rap. However, in some settings, it’s completely appropriate. Like, when it comes to lighting for your home. But where do you start, and how do you choose the right lighting for your space? Table lamps, floor lamps, reading lamps, sconces, and overhead lighting – there are so many choices. Don’t stress – we’ve got you covered! Here’s a quick guide to selecting the right lighting for your home. 1. Warm vs. cool lighting. Not all lighting is created equally. Warm lighting does wonders for making a space in your home feel inviting and cozy. Warm lighting is always my pick. 2. Layering isn’t just for the cold weather. Layering more than one style of lighting in a room is totally acceptable. In fact, we encourage it! Sprinkle table lights on a buffet or end table, then flank the sofa with floor lamps. We’re firm believers that you can’t have too many lighting options in a room. 3. Go big or go home. That’s the name of the game when selecting overhead lighting. Have a room that needs a bit of an oomph? There’s a good chance the room demands a dramatic pop in the form of an over-sized, overhead light. Go for drama, fun, and a show-stopper of a look. It’s hard to go too large on overhead lighting. In most cases, people want to play it safe by going smaller, but the bigger the better here. You’ve got this!

Fovero! Infuses Tradition and New Flavors A CULINARY EXPERIENCE OF GREEK HERITAGE AND HOMESTYLE COMFORT
The recipe for success often calls for the honor of tradition with an infusion of new tastes and flavors, and that is exactly what new and frequent customers can experience at Fovero! Greek & Homestyle Kitchen. The restaurant opened this past April in the Tara Plaza.
Fovero! Greek & Homestyle Kitchen New owner Lori Kitta Long explained she purchased the previous restaurant, Grecian Gyros, roughly a year ago before remodeling. Keeping many of the original menu items while providing diners with newer options, Long said Papillion’s reception to the new restaurant has been tremendous. “They have been very supportive,” Long said. “We’ve had an unbelievable amount of positive comments.” While not Greek herself or raised with Mediterranean recipes, Long said that she had begun helping out at the former restaurant, and she got to know the previous owners, becoming acquainted with Greek-inspired recipes. Then, when she purchased the restaurant, she decided to keep the Greek options as many enjoyed them, and she chose to make most of these recipes from scratch in the Fovero! kitchen. “It’s the only thing that has been here and the only Greek around the area, so I thought, ‘We are for sure keeping it!’” she said. Within its first six months, Fovero!—which translates to “Amazing!” in Greek—has already won such accolades, with first place for Best of Omaha’s top new restaurant and earning the rank of third-best Greek restaurant. “I couldn’t believe it when they called,” she said. The owner credits the restaurant’s success to the steady folding of the restaurant’s roots and the addition of new menu items. For instance, long-time customers can return to find old favorites such as gyros, a meat and pita sandwich,

but can find some new and already popular options that Long refers to as “Good Ol’ American” food, which includes pork tenderloins, burgers, baked goods, Sunday breakfasts, a rotating Thursday special, and more. “Those are the kind of things I was brought up on,” Long said. In another nod to tradition, the owner said her mother’s cooking inspired her to open a restaurant, something she long wished her mother, Susie Kitta, would do as a kid. “She’s no longer with us,” Long said. “There are certain recipes I make that are my mom’s, and those are the ones I try to bring here. Her food is still enjoyed by people.” A former educator at nearby St. Columbkille Parish and in Omaha Public Schools, Long also said her former academic career prompted her to research and find homemade recipes for many of the restaurant’s Greek items. Citing a visit from a customer who hailed from Greece, Long said she was challenged to make an authentic Greek salad. “Because of my education, I researched it,” Long laughed, adding that an authentic Greek salad is chopped vegetables and a Greek vinaigrette. Making everything in-house, Long said customers took to it quickly. “If I’m doing it, I’m going to make it,” she said. This list of homemade goods extends to other Greek items, including the spanakopita (spinach pie,) baklava, tzatziki, and more. “We try things so many times until we get the taste we want. And we do it that way, all the way to the salad dressings. It is how I was brought up.” For fans of the previous Americanized Greek salad, Long said they can find the restaurant’s long-time salad option still on the menu, as many have requested. Fovero!, she said, strives to keep menu items people like while being open to suggestions and “give the people what they want.” For instance, coming from a Polish background herself, one repeated request is for the Polish dumplings.

“There are certain recipes I make that are my mom’s, and those are the ones I try to bring here. Her food is still enjoyed by people.” - Lori Kitta Long on her mother, Susie Kitta’s, influence on the restaurant
“We haven’t done pierogis yet, but we will do it!” she said. “That will be a special someday.” Long’s only minor concern, she said, was that many folks in the community are still learning that Fovero! is open and where they are located. Recounting a post from the Let’s Talk Papillion Facebook Group, she said many were surprised to learn that the restaurant was open and offering homemade baked pies. However, she said she felt confident as people were spreading the word. New customers can visit Fovero! at 839 Tara Plaza in Papillion on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. or enjoy breakfast on Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Readers can also find more information online at foverokitchen.com or view the daily and weekly specials through social media by following Fovero Greek & Homestyle Kitchen on Facebook and Instagram.

1. WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND YOUR NAME CHANGE THIS PAST YEAR? A new name was needed to reflect our commitment to all of Sarpy County and Ralston, not just our three historical towns. NeighborGood was chosen with the families we serve in mind.
2. WHAT SHOULD THE COMMUNITY KNOW ABOUT NEIGHBORGOOD? Feeding our neighbors and taking care of the community is our passion. Our volunteers, staff, and board members are local residents who want to make a difference.
3. HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT NEIGHBORGOOD? Educate friends and neighbors on the need in Sarpy County. It’s hard to see that poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity exist in our neighborhoods, but we help neighbors in every subdivision in our community.
4. WHAT IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL PART OF YOUR WORK? Helping a family be successful. Seeing families have fresh diapers thanks to our partnership with the Nebraska Diaper Bank or making a birthday cake from a youth group donation are little things that shine. The conversations we have with our senior neighbors are bright spots in their days. What we provide keeps them going to the next month and helps in a small way.

SMOOTHIE BOWLS
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES Start your day with a nutritious and vitamin-packed breakfast. Smoothie bowls are a great way to add a variety of fruits and vegetables. Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day.
