LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Letter From The Publisher

December 2023 PUBLISHER

Kyler Hendrickson kyler.hendrickson@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Horse-drawn carriages make their way around town. City streets are filled with fire pits as children roast marshmallows for their s’mores. Santa has a line stretching out of the old schoolhouse while his reindeer are a spectacle outside. Songs of the season can be heard as everyone gathers around a giant switch. 5-4-3-2-1 rings loud, the mayor flips the switch, and the entire town is lit up with lights too many to count. Is this a Hallmark movie? Sometimes it sure feels that way! Winter Wonderland is our family’s favorite event of the year, and we are so thankful to have been able to experience it with so many of you. If you missed it this year, it is never too early to get it on the calendar for next year. I can tell you; it is already on ours! However, Winter Wonderland is only the start to this magical season in our Papillion community. With the holidays here and the spirit of the season among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all. I still remember climbing into our minivan, drinking hot chocolate, and looking at Christmas lights when I was a kid, and you can bet that we will be doing that with our family again this year. I also encourage you to remember that though this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who are lonely or needing assistance. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending joy, grace, empathy, and love. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

THE ART OF GRATITUDE ARTICLE BY ALISON RODDEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY VANESSA MITERA

AN ARTIST’S JOURNEY INTO TEACHING GRATITUDE

Luba Carlson Artzy Kreations, in the heart of downtown Papillion, is not your average art studio. Sure, you can find art classes, and get together with your friends for a paint & (non-alcoholic) sip party. But at Artzy Kreations, Luba Carlson shares her passion through "Gratia Partum," a gratitude art journaling class that gathers on Tuesday nights. It's more than a class; it's a community where art meets appreciation, and journaling prompts spark creativity. In these sessions, participants explore various art techniques, each designed to enhance their gratitude experience. Artzy Kreations has become a hub of creativity and positivity. Luba Carlson’s expertise in acrylics, watercolor, and henna techniques shines through in specialized classes that cater to diverse interests and skill levels. At 29, Luba Carlson turned a new page in her life by moving from Ukraine to America. In her homeland, she was a seasoned teacher, an occupation she initially sought to continue in her new country. However, facing the unexpected challenges of re-establishing her teaching credentials, Luba decided to forge her own path. Equipped with a master's degree in mathematics, she found herself in a paradoxical position: overqualified for some roles and yet underqualified for others

due to perceived experience gaps. Undeterred, she launched her own venture, a business that would leverage her organizational prowess to help others. This enterprise taught her a valuable lesson: her passion did not lie in merely planning but in teaching and creating. With the birth of her child and a subsequent move to Texas, Luba started a daycare from her home. While fulfilling, this venture was isolating and exhausting, prompting her to seek out an activity just for herself. Reconnecting with her love for mathematics, she discovered solace in the precise and creative act of drawing Mandalas. This form of art became her sanctuary, leading her down an unexpected path toward art and gratitude. Luba's foray into artistic expression was no fleeting pastime. It grew into a cornerstone of her life, a way to sit with and savor her gratitude. She began with bullet points in a journal, but her mathematician's precision and teacher's creativity soon turned these into elaborate designs. Glitter, paint, and eventually watercolors found their way into her work, transforming her gratitude practice into a mixed-media celebration. CONTINUED >

“I believe it’s important to sit in my gratitude, making sure that I am heard, that my gratitude is received.” Luba soon learned that spending time each week with her gratitude art journal produced more than a pretty book. She found that the longer she sat in her gratitude, the more good things happened in her life. Even expressing gratitude for things she did not have yet seemed to make them appear. She has several stories of this working in her life, but the biggest one was when she made a vision board of her dream house. She forgot about it but continued with her gratitude journaling, and when she and her family made made the big move to Nebraska, it just so happened that the house they bought fit about 90% of what she had dreamed of on her vision board long ago. Luba says, “I believe it’s important to sit in my gratitude, making sure that I am heard, that my gratitude is received.” She says it’s like a direct line to the higher power. Papillion’s newest shop, Kasa du Bonbon, offers a “sweet” blend of culture and coffee. According to owners Karime Rios and Paolo Almeida, this was always the God-given dream. “I originally wanted to own a coffee shop,” said Karime, and the desire only grew more when she later met her husband, Paolo. This shared love expanded further when they experienced boba tea. “Whenever we travel, we go to coffee and boba shops!” But that aspiration took work, the owners said, including more than 180 hours of business classes, support from the Nebraska Enterprise Fund, prayer, and more. The result is what many have enjoyed since their opening in September of this year. That love of coffee is now a full-blown pairing of cultures and flavors, from the Green Love crêpe—a chicken

and pesto creation from Paolo’s home kitchen—to the seasonal and regular espresso and tea drinks, which reflect Karime’s interest. Even the café’s atmosphere is inspired by their love and cultures. For example, the name Kasa du Bonbon, a fusion of their Spanish and French languages, loosely translates to “House of Sweetness.” Paolo explained the name and sentiment was to create a third space. “Anyone can come and experience all the blessings God has favored us with,” he said. “This is a ‘sweet’ place to be.” Readers can explore their menu and story at kasadubonbon.com, through Kasa Du Bonbon on Facebook and Instagram, or by visiting their shop at 8410 South 73rd Plaza.

Designs, fashions, and even businesses can change over more than half a century, but one thing that often endures is family. And while the styles and offerings have evolved throughout the decades, McKean's Floor to Ceiling is more than just a legacy of a local business. McKean's is a family. Initially founded by Dennis McKean inside his garage, McKean’s has developed into a family business and legacy forged alongside his wife Donna and

passed on to their children. "This November, it will be 61 years," said Darren McKean. He, alongside his younger brother Dave, now co-owns the business they inherited from their parents. It has since expanded through multiple locations, leading to the company's current building near the southwest corner of 108th and Harrison Streets, where it offers a one-stop shop for remodeling and new construction, delivering almost all one could

need with uncompromising integrity for all who enter its doors. While initially offering floor coverings, the two recounted how the family business naturally evolved into countertop fabrication until joining the floor-to-ceiling buying group in the early 2000s. "We've prided ourselves on being a one-stop shop," said Darren. Noting the ever-growing busyness of life, the store provides an array of products so people can come in or visit online at McKeans.com to use room visualizers or peruse galleries to dream it all in one place rather than use multiple businesses. And once a customer has an idea, McKean's can do as much or as little as the customer wants. This practice, he said, has resulted in return business in both new construction and remodeling. "We'll take it from there! We can do a project so they don't have to lift a finger," Darren said. "Unless they want to—and if they do, we'll work with them too." While the business has evolved with the market, the McKean family has grown alongside it, with many of the employees, from tile installers to showroom designers, a part of the family. Two third-generation employees include Ryan McKean, Darren's son and sales manager, and Tena Gryder. Tena serves as the office manager, inheriting the role from her mother, Dennise, the oldest child of Dennis and Donna.

"I was her right hand and was able to take over the role after her passing in 2021," Tena said. Cousins Tena and Ryan both recounted how growing up in the family and the business went hand-in-hand, with all four of them at some point working parttime through their teen years to eventual full-time employment. "As a grandchild, to hear stories from my mom about the things that weren't always easy, but how Grandpa worked to build this company. For me, there's pride in what it's become," Tena said. "I don't really know much other than this business," Ryan added. "You learned it from Grandpa and Grandma growing up— and now watching these guys do it." "We've been doing something right for 60 years!" said Dave. "I'd like to think that longevity proves something." Despite all the growth, however, Dave said McKean's will always strive to deliver that small-town, family service and integrity associated with its roots in Ralston. "We've always been drawn to that small-town feel," he said. "We've stayed in the area and continue to have that." Darren, Tena, Dave, and Ryan all said potential customers are welcome to walk in and explore McKean's options or visit them online. The family is ready and excited to help make renovation or new construction dreams a reality.

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
