LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Publisher In this season of gratitude, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. Thanksgiving encourages us to slow down, embrace the present, and appreciate the people and moments that bring us joy. As I step into this exciting chapter with Olathe City Lifestyle, I’m especially grateful to be a champion for the incredible people, businesses, and organizations that make this community so special. I grew up in the area, and getting to know the people behind the businesses, hearing their stories, and seeing the passion they pour into Olathe has been such a meaningful part of this journey. I feel incredibly fortunate to have a front-row seat to the growth, generosity, and community spirit that make Olathe feel like home. This month, I’ve been especially grateful for the small, everyday moments that make life beautiful: laughter with my sweet little girl, who turns two this month; quiet mornings with my Bible and a cup of coffee; and the family traditions and gatherings that make the Thanksgiving season so special. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, giving back, and celebrating the people and organizations that make Olathe such a special place. We’re endlessly thankful for our advertising partners, whose support allows us to bring inspiring stories to your doorstep each month, and for the readers who make it all worthwhile. As we prepare to gather with loved ones, let’s take a moment to reflect on what truly brings meaning to our lives. This holiday season, may we find contentment not in possessions or accolades, but in the connections we nurture and the good we do for others. Wishing you and your family a season of gratitude and grace. And after all the planning, dreaming, and work that has gone into bringing this magazine to life, I’m so excited to finally say: Olathe, welcome to City Lifestyle.

“Our Primrose journey began as parents. We saw firsthand the difference an exceptional early education can make as our own children grew in confidence, curiosity and character at Primrose. That experience inspired us to become owners and bring that same nurturing, high-quality education and care to more families throughout Johnson County. As local, onsite owners, this school is deeply personal to us. We believe every child deserves to walk through the doors each day feeling known, loved and excited to learn— and every parent deserves to feel confident knowing their child is in a place where they can truly thrive. We’re proud to be personally invested in creating that experience for every child and family we serve.”

S T ON E L E A D CREATING CHARACTER THROUGH NATURAL SURFACES

A beautiful room often starts with a single element that sets the direction for everything else. For many Kansas City homeowners and designers, that element is natural stone. At Stratus Surfaces, the design process begins with exploration. The Lenexa showroom and slab gallery give homeowners and design professionals an opportunity to see materials in person, compare options and discover surfaces that can shape the look and feel of an entire space. “Our role is to be a resource and a partner to the people creating spaces throughout Kansas City,” says Meg Russell, marketing director for Stratus Surfaces. “What makes that community special is the care that goes into the work. There is an appreciation for craftsmanship and creating homes with character, and we enjoy being part of that process.”

“The right selection should feel at home in the design and make sense for the people who will live with it.”

Stratus Surfaces works with interior designers, architects, builders and homeowners throughout the selection process. Some clients arrive knowing exactly what they want, while others are still looking for inspiration. Either way, the process starts with a conversation about the project, how the space will be used and what matters most to the client. Plans, inspiration photos and finish samples can help establish a direction, but seeing the slabs in person often becomes the turning point. “A sample shows only a small part of the story,” Russell says. “Seeing the full slab reveals the scale of the veining, shifts in color and the relationship between quieter areas and more expressive movement.” That perspective can make all the difference when selecting a material for a

large kitchen island, fireplace surround, backsplash or bathroom vanity. A dramatic pattern that feels overwhelming in a small sample can become a stunning focal point when viewed across an entire slab. Likewise, subtle movement and texture can add depth without dominating a room. The goal is not simply to find something beautiful. It is to find a surface that works with the way a space will actually be lived in. “A busy family kitchen may call for a different conversation than a decorative fireplace surround,” Russell says. “We consider the desired look alongside care expectations and the intended application. The right selection should feel at home in the design and make sense for the people who will live with it.” That approach is particularly relevant as homeowners become more interested

in natural materials with personality. According to Russell, warmer tones are gaining popularity as homeowners move away from cooler palettes. Quartzites with rich color and expressive movement are also attracting attention, including greens, blues, warm golds and earthy undertones. Rather than designing a room and selecting a surface to simply match it, more clients are allowing the stone itself to influence the direction of the design. “Clients are becoming more comfortable letting the stone guide the design, choosing surrounding finishes that bring out the colors within the slab,” Russell says. One recent Kansas City project featuring Emerald Lagoon Quartzite demonstrates the impact that approach can have. With rich green tones and natural movement,

“Clients are becoming more comfortable letting the stone guide the design, choosing surrounding finishes that bring out the colors within the slab.”

the stone becomes a defining feature of the space without feeling forced. “It shows how a colorful natural material can feel sophisticated and create a lasting impression,” Russell says. For Stratus Surfaces, the appeal of natural stone goes beyond current trends. Every slab has its own variations in color, movement and texture, making it difficult to duplicate exactly. Those characteristics can give a home a sense of individuality that feels more personal than simply following a popular design style. “Choosing a slab because you connect with it creates a more personal starting point than choosing something solely because it is popular,” Russell says. “That connection can outlast a trend.” That personal connection is often discovered through conversation. Designers may notice a particular color that complements a fabric or finish, while a homeowner may be drawn to one distinctive detail in the stone. The selection process becomes collaborative, with each person bringing a different perspective to the project. “The exchange of ideas” is what Russell says the local team enjoys most about working with the Kansas City design community. “Each person brings a different perspective, and it is rewarding for our team to see a material through their eyes.” For homeowners beginning a project, the process does not have to start with a fully developed plan. Stratus Surfaces

welcomes both homeowners and trade professionals who are ready to make a selection as well as those who are simply beginning to explore possibilities. “You do not need to have everything figured out before visiting,” Russell says. The showroom offers a place to slow down, see the materials at full scale and consider how they might work within a home. Once a material is selected, Stratus Surfaces works with the client's chosen fabricator, who handles the purchase, fabrication and installation. Ultimately, choosing a surface is about more than selecting a countertop or backsplash. Natural stone can become the foundation for a room's personality, bringing color, texture and movement into the design in a way that feels inherently unique. “We want our showroom to support that discovery while helping teams make informed selections for their projects,” Russell says.

For Douglas Flick, baking has always been about more than following a recipe. It is about technique, creativity and creating something that makes people excited to come back for another bite. At Park Street Pastry in Olathe, Flick brings years of experience in the culinary industry and education to a bakery built around fresh, Europeanstyle pastries and a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. “I opened Park Street Pastry because I wanted to provide great quality, fresh European style pastries in a unique setting,” Flick says. That philosophy is reflected in the bakery itself, which Flick describes as a laid-back, home-style experience where customers can enjoy thoughtfully made pastries without feeling overly formal. Behind the scenes, Flick continues to approach baking with the mindset of an educator. While he did not start the culinary program at Johnson County Community College, he did start the school's baking and pastry program, with the goal of preparing aspiring pastry chefs to work in a professional environment. That experience continues to influence his work today. “I continually try to teach, create and develop new styles of pastries,” he says. For Flick, however, creating something memorable does not necessarily mean making it complicated. In fact, he believes the opposite can often be true.

20

“I opened Park Street “I believe great tasting simplicity is the key to well made pastries,” he says. That philosophy can be seen in some of Park Street Pastry's signature favorites, including the kouign amann, chocolate croissant and cinnamon rolls. Each offers the kind of familiar comfort that makes a bakery visit special while showcasing the techniques and traditions behind European-style baking. After years in the culinary industry, Flick says what continues to motivate him is surprisingly simple. “I get excited about waking up every morning and getting to create pastries that excite customers,” he says. That spirit of experimentation is also reflected in the bakery's approach to its menu. Rather than simply rotating a set selection of items, Flick and his team continue creating new pastries and introducing them to customers to see what they think. “Things are always changing,” Flick says. “We do not rotate items. We create new items and offer them to our customers to get their feedback.” That willingness to try something new has also shaped the relationship between the bakery and its customers. Flick says he has noticed that customers have become more willing to branch out and try pastries they have never experienced before. For someone who has spent years teaching others the craft, those relationships have become one of the most meaningful parts of his career. “I am most proud of the relationships that have been built over the years,” Flick says. His advice to aspiring culinary professionals reflects the perseverance required to build those relationships and develop a career in the industry.

Pastry because I wanted to provide great quality, fresh European style pastries in a unique setting.”

“Stick with it and have an open mind and open any doors that close in front of you,” he says. At Park Street Pastry, that combination of tradition, creativity and simplicity continues to shape the experience. Customers can stop in for a familiar favorite, discover something new or simply enjoy a pastry in a comfortable setting. And for Flick, there is always another creation waiting to come out of the kitchen.

A Beautiful THANKSGIVING TABLE, Made Easy There is something about a beautifully set Thanksgiving table that makes the holiday feel a little more special. With a few smart choices, you can pull together a table that looks like it took all week when really it came down to picking the right pieces and letting them work together.

START WITH YOUR TABLECLOTH AND CENTERPIECE Before you worry about napkins, place cards or which fork goes where, pick your tablecloth and centerpiece first. Those two choices set the tone for everything else and make the rest of your decisions so much easier. A pretty fruit or botanical print tablecloth is a great anchor for fall. It brings in color and pattern without having to do much else. From there you can layer in your dishes, glassware and a signature centerpiece piece, like a pair of decorative pheasants or a favorite serving tureen, to finish the look. If you are hosting a larger crowd, don’t be afraid to push a couple of tables together and use a single long tablecloth to unify the space. It creates one continuous table that feels intentional rather than like two tables pushed together as an afterthought.

MIX YOUR PATTERNS AND TEXTURES One of the easiest ways to make a table feel curated instead of too matchy-matchy is to mix your dish patterns. Layer in a few different china patterns, add texture with rattan chargers, and let a mix of materials do the work. Rattan

22

chargers especially add warmth and let you set your tablecloth on the diagonal so every seat still gets a spot, even on a square cloth. Square tablecloths are worth a mention here too. They are easy to store and clean, and because you can angle them diagonally, they actually fit most tables better than you would expect. Bamboo flatware is another simple swap that makes a big difference. It feels warmer and more relaxed than traditional silver, which is perfect for a holiday that is meant to feel welcoming rather than formal.

LET THE CENTERPIECE TELL A STORY Your centerpiece does not need to be complicated to make an impact. Mixing botanicals with a touch of nature such as branches, greenery or seasonal produce, is almost always a win. Pumpkins, apples and figs are an easy, no fuss way to bring fall onto the table if flower arranging is not your thing. Line a few pumpkins down a counter or table runner, tuck in votive candles between them, and you have an instant seasonal moment with very little effort. If your table is full and space is tight, think about height instead of spreading out. A single showstopping serving piece, like a large tureen, can act as the

centerpiece on its own, especially when you are seating a big group and need the extra room for food. Don’t forget about the spaces above and around your table. Fresh clippings from the yard tucked into a chandelier or light fixture, mixed with fall branches, add an unexpected layer of beauty without taking up any table space at all.

DO NOT SKIP THE SMALL DETAILS A few simple additions go a long way toward making guests feel like the evening was planned just for them. Place cards and printed menus are an easy way to elevate the table and give guests a little anticipation for what is coming. Candlelight is non-negotiable too. Even a few votives or taper candles instantly make a table feel warmer and more special. If you only have time for three things, make it these: • Linens • A centerpiece with fresh florals or seasonal produce • Candlelight Those three alone can take a table from everyday to holiday ready. 23

“ WITH A FEW smart choices, YOU CAN PULL together A TABLE THAT looks like IT TOOK ALL WEEK WHEN really IT CAME DOWN TO PICKING THE right pieces AND LETTING THEM work together.” EXTEND THE TABLE WITH A DESSERT STATION Setting up a small coffee and dessert station just off the main table gives guests a reason to get up and mingle a little before settling in for something sweet. Vintage glass cake stands and compotes at varying heights make even a simple pie or store bought dessert look intentional. A small vase of flowers nearby ties the station back to the rest of the tablescape. If baking is not your thing, a pie from your favorite local bakery, displayed on a pretty stand with the packaging removed and a few fresh garnishes like sliced apples or greenery, will look just as elevated as something homemade.

THE REAL SECRET TO A GREAT THANKSGIVING TABLE At the end of the day, the details matter, but the host matters more. Prep as much as you can ahead of time so you are not scrambling on the day of. Greet guests with a cocktail or a few small bites to kick off the evening, and give yourself permission to actually enjoy the people you invited. One last tip: before you start decorating, take a walk around your yard. Branches, leaves and greenery you already have on hand can be some of the prettiest and most personal additions to your table, and they cost nothing at all.

GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up

Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our nonprofit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.

We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.

“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.

Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.

This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.

A Holiday Tradition Aglow The Overland Park Arboretum’s Luminary Walk invites visitors to experience the gardens in a whole new light.

Each holiday season, the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens glows with thousands of twinkling lights. Yet amid the colorful displays and festive performances, it is the warm flicker of candlelight that gives the annual Luminary Walk its unmistakable charm. “The candlelight is really what sets the Luminary Walk apart,” says Jennifer Cairns, Director of Development for The Arts and Recreation Foundation of Overland Park. “Volunteers literally head into the woods and light all of the candles by hand, creating this magical, almost old-fashioned feeling throughout the Arboretum.” Now entering its 27th year, the event has grown alongside the Arboretum. As the gardens have expanded, volunteers have gained more space for installations and new elements, and features like the beloved gnome homes have become treasured traditions. The Luminary Walk now offers four experiences. The traditional Luminary Walk welcomes families with live entertainment, Santa visits and festive activities, while the adults-only Candlelight Stroll offers a quieter atmosphere and additional beverage options. Electric Glow provides a lower-sensory experience with no live music and smaller crowds. Glow Cart Tours offer chauffeured golf cart rides through the displays for guests with mobility needs.

During the traditional Walk and the Candlelight Stroll, guests wander the illuminated gardens with candles aglow, discovering performances along the route from local musicians, youth choirs, carolers and even an Elvis impersonator. Visitors can warm up with beverages, including cider from Louisburg Cider Mill. “Luminary Walk is almost entirely volunteer-driven, with incredible support from the Arboretum staff,” Cairns says. “It takes an extraordinary group of people to create something that feels this magical.” The event is also one of the Friends of the Arboretum’s most important annual fundraisers, with ticket proceeds supporting educational programs, operations and capital needs. For first-time visitors, Cairns recommends dressing warmly, wearing comfortable shoes and allowing plenty of time to explore. Luminary Walk in its various forms is open November 27 through December 26. Tickets are available at artsandrec-op.org.

capsule wardrobe A capsule wardrobe is all about quality over quantity: a streamlined collection of timeless pieces that work together and never go out of style. Think of it as the backbone of your closet, where every item earns its place and serves a purpose.

Originally, the concept of a capsule wardrobe was geared toward men, not because men chase trends, but often because they skip the basics. Some overlook the value of having well-made, versatile staples that make getting dressed effortless.

So, what should be in a man's capsule collection? Start with the essentials: a tailored wool or cashmere blazer, straight-leg denim in both a dark and casual wash, a structured wool overcoat, and a solid cotton or wool sweater for layering. Add a crisp button-down shirt or two, and you've built a strong foundation. Stick to timeless colors: navy, olive green, grey, khaki, chocolate brown, and black. These shades mix and match with ease and always look sharp. For patterns, heritage classics like plaid, check, herringbone, and houndstooth add depth without overwhelming the look. When it comes to fabric, focus on the good stuff: cashmere, cotton, denim, and wool. These materials age well, hold their shape, and elevate even the simplest outfit. Once you've nailed the core pieces, getting dressed becomes second nature. Whether you're heading to the office, out for the weekend, or packing for a trip, you'll have the confidence of knowing everything works together.
