Happy New Year!

Jerri Culpepper | jerri.culpepper@citylifestyle.com

How's 2024 been for you so far? Off to a promising start, or maybe not so much...? Many of life's circumstances are beyond our control, but to a certain extent, how we deal with or view those circumstances determines how we see ourselves. For example, a few years ago, my family was facing the gradual loss of our intelligent, talented and beloved mother (a master gardener, gardening columnist, potter and, earlier in her life, political activist), who was battling Alzheimer's disease/dementia. I won't lie; this was perhaps the most difficult time of my life, as it was for my two sisters and my niece. However, on reflection, I am so glad I quit my full-time job at OU to be there for her, first at her home, then in assisted living, and was able to visit her almost every day. Some days were better than others, especially early in the progression of this cruel disease, and sometimes her "old" self showed through. I am so glad I didn't miss these moments, and I hope that our presence made her life a little more livable. She'd given us so much; it was our turn to reciprocate. Just prior to Mom's passing in hospice care, we discovered that my niece was expecting. While Liam never got to meet her, we have ensured that he knows what a special woman his great-grandmother was by sharing our favorite memories of her and some of the life lessons we learned by her example. How would I feel about myself today had I not made the commitment years ago to be there for my mom, up until the very end? I'm thinking I'd be living with some pretty deep regrets. Taking a different tack... Did you set New Year's goals for yourself? How are those coming along for you? Mine were partly wellness-related—to continue to lose weight and exercise more often (results mixed on both so far)—but also to be more "in the present", to spend more quality time with my family, and to travel more. I'd love to hear your resolutions (especially those pertaining to health and fitness); if I receive enough, I'll share these (with permission) in an upcoming issue. In the meantime, stay warm, and I hope you enjoy reading this issue. Warmest regards! J E R R I C U L P E P P E R , M A N AG I N G E D I TO R @ C I T Y L I F E S T Y L E _ O KC

Oklahoma Proton Center + ProtonPals Foundation Offer High-Tech, Compassionate Care to Cancer Patients

ARTICLE BY KAYLIN HILL

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

In the heart of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Proton Center has become a beacon of hope for cancer patients. In an exclusive interview, we delve into the center’s history, growth and the invaluable support provided by the ProtonPals Foundation. Join us now as we explore the journey of a facility that has become a vital player in Oklahoma’s—and the world’s—fight against cancer. The Oklahoma Proton Center opened its doors over 14 years ago, marking the initiation of a transformative chapter in cancer care. While thousands of facilities across the nation offer traditional radiation treatment using photons, only a select 42 centers in our nation actually specialize in proton therapy. “The first dedicated proton facility opened at Loma Linda University in 1990. From 1990 up until this center opened in 2009, there were only five total centers that opened, and Oklahoma Proton Center was the sixth,” said David Raubach, Oklahoma Proton Center's chief development officer. “Today, there’s over 40! So, there’s been significant growth in the proton industry over the last decade or so," he added. This exponential growth underscores the increasing recognition of proton therapy as a powerful tool in the battle against cancer. Proton therapy stands at the forefront of advanced radiation treatment, catering to a diverse array of cancers and tumor types. Diverging from conventional radiation modalities like X-rays or photons, such as IMRT and CyberKnife, protons possess a distinctive physical property, according to the center’s website. This property empowers radiation oncologists to precisely target a patient’s cancer, guiding protons to halt within the tumor and sparing healthy tissues and organs from exposure. This targeted

approach significantly reduces the likelihood of undesirable side effects. Notably, proton therapy has demonstrated superior overall survival outcomes and lower recurrence rates in certain cases compared to alternative forms of radiation treatment, underscoring its efficacy and potential benefits. The ProtonPals Foundation, established in 2018, stands as a testament to the commitment of the Oklahoma Proton Center to provide comprehensive support to its cancer patients. The foundation serves as a lifeline for patients facing financial struggles, ensuring they can focus on their treatment without the added burden of financial stress. What sets the ProtonPals Foundation apart is the personal touch brought by former patients who now form the foundation’s board. This unique perspective allows the foundation to address the diverse needs of patients, understanding the challenges they face during their cancer journey. “If a patient comes to us and they are financially struggling and trying to make their bills and just really having a hard time, they fill out an application form, and we’ll review and approve for different options to help such as gas money, gas cards, hotel stays, meals, access to mental health professionals," said Jeff Moody, ProtonPals Foundation Board member and cancer survivor. "Anything we can do to enhance their peace of mind while they’re going through their treatment plan at the center is very important to us,” he added. Every two weeks, completed treatment plan successes are celebrated with a graduation ceremony, symbolized by a special coin gifted to each graduate. The center opens its doors to the public through tours held twice a year, offering a glimpse into the cutting-edge technology and compassionate care that define the facility. CONTINUED >

Support from donors and volunteers also are critical to the foundation's ability to serve families battling cancer. There are several ways to help!

Special Events - Help organize fundraising and com munity events by helping with ticket sales, decorations, refreshments, marketing and other logistical aspects of event planning. General Office - Help make copies, collate and staple program or promotional packets. Prepare mailings, deliver gift or gas cards to patients or other office duties as needed. Computer - Help enter data (database software or excel spreadsheet experience required). Outreach - With staff help, represent Proton Pals at health fairs, races, churches and community events or introduce foundation members to people who may want to get involved as a volunteer or donor. The foundation’s website, ProtonPalsFoundation.org, serves as a hub for those seeking more information and looking to contribute to their worthy cause. The Oklahoma Proton Center is leaving an indelible mark on the fight against cancer for Oklahomans and beyond. For Katy and Brody Gustafson of Edmond, the choice was to purchase an existing house with their desired approximate square footage and acreage, then to identify a professional company to work with them to make it the home of their dreams. Read on about the Gustafson family’s experiences working with Randolph Design + Build (RandolpHDB.com) in the major remodel of their home in Woodruff’s Tall Oaks addition in Edmond. Responses are those of Katy Gustafson. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR DECISION TO PURCHASE AN EXISTING HOUSE THAT COULD BE TRANSFORMED INTO THE HOME THAT WOULD MEET YOUR FAMILY’S NEEDS AND DESIRES AS OPPOSED TO SPENDING MORE TIME LOOKING FOR AN EXISTING HOME BUILD THAT WOULD HAVE AT LEAST SOME OF THE FEATURES YOU WERE LOOKING FOR? We knew we wanted to be in this particular area since it is close to family and friends. Our main criteria was finding a lot big enough for a pickleball court, which is a sport our whole family enjoys together. When we bought the house, we were in a seller’s market, so we knew it would be difficult to find a home that would fit our family’s needs and wants exactly, so we opened our minds to the idea of a remodel.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH THIS FIRM? DID THEY LISTEN CAREFULLY TO YOU WHEN YOU TALKED ABOUT WHAT YOU ENVISIONED? DID THEY FOLLOW THROUGH ON THAT? From the first meeting with Gary, Ashley and Trish at Randolph Design + Build in April 2022, we knew we had made the right decision. They walked us through the house design and made a list of everything we wanted for the home. We had no vision for how they would be able to accomplish it within the footprint of the existing house, but they really made us believe anything was possible! Friends will ask if there’s anything we would do differently, and I struggle to find an answer. The Randolphs really made sure we accomplished what we intended to. [Editor’s Note: Katy is referring to Gary Randolph, master builder; Ashley Randolph-McAllister, master builder apprentice; and Trish Randolph, creative designer. Demolition on the existing house started in July 2022. The family moved in and all work was completed in January 2023.] DID YOU COME TO THE TABLE WITH A PRETTY DETAILED PLAN, OR MORE OF A GENERAL IDEA, FOR YOUR DREAM HOME? We didn’t come to the table with much more than a long list of wants with no idea how to make it happen. We were blown away when Gary and Ashley showed us the plans and had incorporated every detail we’d discussed. Their experience on every aspect of the process, from costing, construction, design and project management, made the whole process smooth from start to finish. CONTINUED >

DID THEY KEEP YOU INFORMED AS THE PROJECT PROGRESSED? WERE THEY ABLE TO STICK TO THE BUDGET FOR THE MOST PART? They guided us through every step of the way—from wish lists to inspiration boards to design selections and finishing touches. They gave us access to their construction software, so we could see the full schedule, check in on budget and make final selections all within the app. It was so efficient and organized! We really felt like we were in control of our budget, and the Randolphs were able to give us options to stay within budget when we needed to. ARE YOU OVERALL PLEASED WITH IT ALL? ANYTHING THAT BRINGS YOU AND THE FAMILY PARTICULAR JOY? We are thrilled with the finished product and think back very fondly on the entire process. Walking around the neighborhood and watching our boys ride their bikes over to play with friends brings us so much joy! We thought we’d have to choose between living close to friends and family and having the home we wanted, but the Randolph team made it a reality! I am so proud of the design selections we made and still in awe of how the team implemented our vision.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU’VE BECOME CLOSE? When Trish and Ashley took us to make our selections, it felt like we were with family. Not only were they helpful and encouraging, they were also honest and realistic, which gave us a lot of peace. They even brought snacks for the long days! We still call Gary for advice nearly a year later, and he’s always been so generous with us. They are truly an honorable firm, and their impact on our family won’t soon be forgotten! WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THEM TO OTHER PEOPLE CONSIDERING A SMALL, MEDIUM OR LARGE REMODEL? We would, and we have! I have lost count of how many friends and family we’ve referred to the Randolphs. ANYTHING NOT COVERED ABOVE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? Ashley always asked, “Is it perfect?” before finalizing an element of the build. It really made us feel like they cared more about our satisfaction than simply checking a box. Renovating a house comes with many decisions but hiring the Randolph team was the best decision we made by far! CONTINUED >

A TREASURE TROVE OF INDIGENOUS ART AND CULTURAL EXPRESSION

ARTICLE BY LACEY LETT | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF EXHIBIT C Nestled in the heart of Bricktown, Exhibit C Gallery is a gateway to a treasure trove of indigenous art and cultural expression. “Exhibit C places heavy importance on our mission of celebrating and uplifting Native voices through art. We aim to serve the First American art community not only in Oklahoma but across the U.S.,” said Katie Goodnight, tourism arts manager for the Chickasaw Nation.

One of those artists who just debuted a decadelong project is D.G. Smalling, a Choctaw Nation master artist. His exhibit, “Land Ownership and British Government Treaties Project,” is the culmination of a comprehensive research collaboration with Baroness Emma Nicholson of Winterbourne of the United Kingdom House of Lords. His intention is to start a conversation about the ethical challenges confronting contemporary First American artists and ledger artwork and to showcase a body of work referencing the findings in this research project. Conceived at the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s Sovereignty Symposium, Baroness Nicholson and Smalling spent a decade identifying, locating, indexing and analyzing material, culminating in 1,000 land transactional documents related to the Chickasaw Nation in the context of land ownership and the British government. “We’re celebrating the largest transactional history of documents between the Chickasaw Nation and the UK. This spans from the very first encounters between the Chickasaw Nation and the British,” said Smalling. “What I wanted to do with the exhibition is showcase new types of documents in history that have never been seen before.” The material amassed during this extensive research endeavor will be digitized and made available online, as well as housed at the Bodleian Library at Oxford University. Smalling views Exhibit C Gallery as the ideal platform to unveil this project, describing it as a space to innovate and experiment. “Exhibit C is a place where you can beta ideas, where you can beta your concepts and to experiment to see what works and what doesn’t work,” said Smalling. The Chickasaw Nation opened Exhibit C Gallery in 2014 with the vision of raising awareness of the many cultural experiences in Oklahoma. The gallery displays a variety of art mediums from First American artists living around the world. CONTINUED >

The gallery has been a nurturing space for artists like Natalie Miller, an Oklahoma contemporary artist and Chickasaw Citizen. Her colorful pieces not only showcase a modern aesthetic to art but also her First American heritage. “I think especially for me, kind of getting back into painting and exploring my heritage, Exhibit C has created a community for me and artists alike to be around each other,” said Miller. “They are really good about showcasing traditional and contemporary art so it really broadens the audience.” Exhibit C Gallery provides an inclusive platform for artists from any federally recognized tribe to showcase their art, from textiles to pottery, sculptures and more. “It’s such a fantastic aspect of the gallery; Bringing together both emerging and seasoned artists to offer a glimpse at what First American art is. For many of our visitors, the gallery is a first connection or important reintroduction to indigenous art, and that’s a responsibility and privilege we don’t take lightly,” Goodnight said. Exhibit C Gallery is set to embark on a new phase in 2025. It will expand and relocate to a spacious 10,000-square-foot multi-use gallery space within the Horizons District, along the Oklahoma River, adjacent to the First Americans Museum and OKANA Resort. “This next phase for Exhibit C will bring enhanced experiences and greater space to dedicate to our artists and exhibitions,” said Goodnight. Exhibit C Gallery is open daily from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

goals that truly motivate us Consider Prioritizing Your Health, Not the Numbers on a Scale ARTICLE BY PETER LEVINSON

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS

It’s a fresh start, a new year, and many of us are brimming with resolutions. Statistically, a whopping 48% aim to lose weight. But let’s be real, nobody truly wants to lose weight. Dieting means sacrificing beloved food, while the gym often feels like torture… I’m talking about the Stairmaster. So, what if we shifted our focus? Instead of obsessing over numbers on a scale, why not set goals that truly motivate us? For me, it’s a sweater. A cozy piece I adored before life (and maybe a few extra pounds) intervened. When I tried it on recently, the fit was...unforgiving. Now, that sweater sits proudly at the front of my closet, a constant reminder of my goal: to wear it again, and with pride. Sure, it’s a silly goal, but it’s mine. And when I resist those cheese fries, I have a little chuckle and whisper, “This is for you, Sweater.” And it’s not just about weight. Let’s move beyond the singular focus on pounds lost and consider our overall health. This year, my goals are diverse: a waistline goal (inspired by the sweater!), a body scan target, specific blood work results, and more. Remember, many diseases are treatable when detected early. We regularly take our cars for diagnostics yet neglect our own well-being. We wait for the “check engine” light before seeking medical attention. Let’s change that. Let’s make 2024 the year we prioritize our health, not just a number on the scale. Share your health goals with me! Text me at 405.532.6969, and let’s hold each other accountable on this journey to a healthier, happier you.
