May Your Holidays Be Bright and Merry! If there's a downside to writing for a magazine (as opposed to a newspaper or social media, for example), it's the lead time required. As I write this, it's still the early days of November; Halloween is just over and Thanksgiving is still weeks away. I haven't yet had a chance to really get immersed in the holiday spirit, but pulling together this issue helped move me in that direction! There's no shortage of things to do across the metro area in the way of holiday fun, ranging from educational events at the Sam Noble Museum to various tree lightings, craft fairs and pop-up markets. Inside, you'll read about how seriously the New Urbanism community of Selah takes the spirit of Christmas. Nothing exemplifies this more than the spectacular 385,000 light display that adorns the entry district and its buildings as well as throughout the community, which is open to the public for view throughout the month. You also won't want to miss their "Christmas Vacation Kickoff," scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2, starting at 4 p.m. See story, p. 16. Here's another great way to get into the holiday spirit. Attend an Oklahoma City Ballet production of The Nutcracker! The ballet company has presented this beloved holiday classic for over a half-century, keeping to the basics but always adding nuances and allowing for character development. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this production beginning on p. 22. I know your to-do list is at least as long as mine, so I won't spend time here outlining the other entertaining and informative articles you'll find inside this issue, but I think it'll be worth your time to carve out a little time to set aside your shopping and baking and whatnot to learn what's happening in our community this holiday season. Remington Park Donates $100K for Millwood Building Project Remington Park recently donated $100,000 to the Millwood Public Schools Enrichment Foundation to support a major construction project. In February, Millwood district voters approved an $8.295 million bond issue to be used to renovate/ remodel an existing portion of Millwood’s campus that once served as a high school to better serve its current purpose as a building accommodating pre-K-4th-grade students. The donation will help offset general operational and contractor costs that weren't covered in the bond.

One of the hallmarks of Selah’s holiday celebrations is the “Christmas Vacation Kickoff,” which was such a massive success when it premiered in 2022 that Selah has decided to host two events this year. The first took place Nov. 19; the second is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2, starting at 4 p.m.

Across the globe, both amateur and professional ballet productions of The Nutcracker help ring in the holiday season. Locally, the holiday classic is a cherished tradition that’s deeply rooted in Oklahoma City Ballet’s rich history. The ballet company has produced The Nutcracker every year for more than a half-century. Each year, dancers, choreographers, set designers and directors come together to put on this annual production, which brings the story of Clara, the Nutcracker, the toy soldiers, the Sugar Plum Fairy and other fantastical beings to life with hints of nuanced classicalism, Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music, and virtuoso choreography and dancing. “The production is really special here in Oklahoma City,” explains Ryan Nye, Oklahoma City artistic director. “The audience is able to experience a highlevel piece of art.” Ryan joined Oklahoma City Ballet as a guest dancer for the 2015 production of The Sleeping Beauty before serving as interim artistic director and rehearsal director. He became artistic director in 2022. Ryan is charged with working alongside Oklahoma City Ballet’s company dancers, choreographers, contract dancers and artistic staff to make the production come together in a way that is both traditional and fresh. “A full-length ballet takes multiple artists and designers to get involved, and everyone has to coordinate together,” Ryan says. “There is a lot of skilled effort from a lot of different people that makes it all come together.” The process of putting together The Nutcracker takes months. Intense initial and ongoing rehearsals are only the tip of the iceberg. Like the magical

mice in the production, creatives can be found scurrying behind the scenes to create and produce the whimsical one-of-a-kind sets and costumes that set The Nutcracker apart from other ballets. Other creatives are working on getting the lighting just so. Later, technical theater rehearsals come into play, and the production really starts to gain momentum with the arrival at rehearsals of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, which provides the orchestration for the annual production. As the production nears opening night, Ryan spends time watching the production from the audience’s point of view. “It is really inspirational to get to sit back and relax and watch their production take shape,” Ryan says. For the 2022 production, the company revamped the choreography to add new elements and style choices, while also staying true to the original choreography. The choreography was revised to make it more culturally respectful and relevant, along with adding different and fresh aspects that continue to captivate and draw in holiday viewers, Ryan explains. However, he adds: “You don’t want to mess with something that isn’t broken. You want to stay close to the original style, but evolve with the dancers’ skills.” The dancers on contract with Oklahoma City Ballet perform in The Nutcracker each year, a practice that allows them to form a close-knit community within the production, to further develop their skills and to more deeply connect with the characters they play. The practice also allows the dancers to add their own personal elements to each character and dance. Their nuanced interpretations then translate into an even more magical production, Ryan says. Something to Ponder What You Want to Hear vs. What You Need to Hear ARTICLE BY PETER LEVINSON

There’s a story about a dad who goes to one of his sons and asks, “Son, will you help me in the field today?” And the son says, “I got you, Dad, I’ll be there. You can count on me.” Pleased with the response, the man then goes to his other son and asks the same question, who replies, “I don’t know. I don’t think I’ll be able to.” Later that day, as the dad is in the field working, only the second son shows up. The first son, who said he would be there, doesn’t show. The first son told his dad what he wanted to hear, though he had no intention of showing up when his dad really needed him. The second son was honest. He didn’t think he would be there, so he told his dad what he needed to hear, which was the truth. When you really need someone, like the dad in this parable, you will be wondering about the whereabouts of those people who told you all the flowery words that made you feel so good earlier. I believe the first son had no intention of showing up; he just told his dad what his dad wanted to hear.

When the dad looked up from his work in the field, he saw someone walking out to help—it just wasn’t the son he had expected. Maybe the second son cleared his schedule, or perhaps he thought to himself, “You know what? Quit being a lazy jerk and go help your dad.” Either way, he showed up. People who are honest with others will also be honest with themselves. Here is a hard truth: most often in life, we reject the people who tell us what we need to hear because it may be difficult to accept. What we need to hear may make us feel uncomfortable, which leads us to reject or become angry with the person who is most trying to help us. Or, worse yet, you are the one telling people what they want to hear because it’s easy and you don’t want to be the “jerk.” So how do we bring this to a close in a meaningful way? I don’t know, but I hope I’ve got you thinking about the type of person you are and about the type of people with whom you surround yourself.

In just a few months, Oklahoma City’s Quail Creek Bank will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. In those nearly five decades, QCB has grown significantly and is now recognized as one of the top-performing banks in the nation. At the same time, it has also retained its local ownership, its welcoming atmosphere and its commitment to serving the community on a personal level. In other words, “We’re not a local branch of a national bank, but a local bank built for those in our community,” said Erin Batey, QCB’s chief communications and innovations officer. “Our employees work here and live here and genuinely care about what happens around us.” Erin, who herself joined the team 15 years ago, added that she’s a “short timer” compared to many of her fellow employees, who’ve been with QCB for 20 to 30 years. “It just reflects the family atmosphere that has been our mission since we opened in 1974,” she said.

HELPING AT THE HOLIDAYS & MORE Integral to Quail Creek Bank’s mission is a long list of holiday and other outreach programs designed to assist people across the metro area year-round. Erin noted that 26 employees now serve on the boards of charities across the metro area, including United Way of Central Oklahoma, Heartline, Hearts for Hearing, Community Literacy Centers, OK Baptist Homes for Children and Mercy Health Foundation.

For instance, Alan Webb, senior vice president and manager of the Quail Creek Bank Investment Center, is the co-founder of “Santa’s Cause,” which works with the Oklahoma City Public School District to identify children who will not be receiving any gifts. Fellow bank employees, along with 650 outside volunteers, assist with the distribution of toys, clothes and food, dressing in Santa suits and delivering the presents in person.

TEACHING KIDS THE FINANCE BASICS Long-term, Quail Creek Bank’s efforts are helping multiple generations of Oklahomans through its purchase of financial literacy curriculum materials for Oklahoma City high schools and middle schools. Erin created the financial literacy program 12 years ago and describes it as her “passion.” The bank’s help in underwriting the cost of these materials has been a godsend for the schools, she added, in the wake of the State of Oklahoma mandating such classes in order to obtain a high school diploma. “We do much more than just buy the materials, however,” Erin said. “We work in partnership with the school district, and we have a bank liaison who is assigned to each individual school. We help them however they want— whether it’s speaking on career day, setting up a booth at school events, doing presentations, giving advice on choosing curriculum, or whatever other ways we can.” In all, the bank provides curriculum materials and expertise to 10 local schools currently

and has supported as many as 37 schools since the program’s inception. Currently, they assist seven high schools, two middle schools and one elementary school. “This program has always been my passion,” Erin added. “I was taught the basics of handling money by my parents, but when I got to college and as a young adult, I made a lot of mistakes and got into a lot of debt. My hope is that through this program we can prevent many of these students from making those same mistakes.” If you’re already out of high school, the bank’s website offers a blog that can answer many of your financial questions. It contains up-to-date information on topics such as healthy budget habits and estate planning, plus more targeted topics like how to protect yourself financially from “romance” scammers who prey on victims via the Internet.

HONORING THOSE WHO HELP Working with several local television stations, Quail Creek Bank also established, and continues to fund, monthly recognition programs, including Hometown Heroes with KWTV-Channel 9’ Proud to Serve, which recognizes first responders and frontline workers with KFOR-Channel 4; and Teacher of the Month with KOCO-Channel 5. Finally, the team at QCB are also active in the Quail Creek Homeowners Association—a natural partnership since the bank’s location, at 12201 N. May Ave., is immediately adjacent to the neighborhood, Erin said. The bank is the signature sponsor for the association’s events and also underwrites the QC Yard of the Month program.

Growing up with military parents, exploring different places defined her young life. We specialize in all-inclusive travel in Mexico and the Caribbean, as well as ocean and river cruising,” she says. “I enjoy planning friend trips, couples travel, anniversaries or honeymoons. But family trips are secretly my favorite to put together.” Jaime says that Sea Gypsy is unique in the travel industry because of their focus on creating continuing education and

wellness travel. They regularly offer opportunities for clinicians and other professionals to gain continuing education requirements, while also relaxing on vacation. “As a licensed clinician, I value the importance of travel on mental health. We understand the need for breaks from work and developing an awareness for work-life balance. We encourage travel as a way to prevent burnout and to show how travel can ease stress factors that lead to burnout,” she adds. Sea Gypsy also focuses on wellness trips, which offer opportunities such as yoga, massage, hiking and other experiences designed to help enhance individual well-being and increase harmony and balance. “A wellness trip could be a small group going to a destination and resort that is known for its environment,” Jaime explains. ”We help our clients focus on a variety of options for a restorative trip, as we know that we all relax and unwind differently.” To make the most of your upcoming travel opportunities, Jaime recommends always using the services of a professional travel agency and purchasing travel insurance to protect them from unknown occurrences that might happen before or during a trip. “Travel agents are about providing top-quality service,” she says. “Anyone can book online, but that booking engine doesn’t get your goals and desires for your trip. And it won’t be a phone call away when something doesn’t go as planned.” As the holiday season nears, Jaime recommends booking travel and experiences as early as possible for best pricing, and then anticipating each aspect of the journey so you can relax and enjoy your holiday travel. Some of Jamie’s top recommendations for holiday travel include Christmas-themed ocean cruises, Christmas Market River Cruises and Christmas at Universal Orlando. “There is nothing quite like the holidays in Hogsmeade or at Hogwarts,” she says, laughing. Six years into her experience at Sea Gypsy, Jaime is proud of how the business is continuing to grow, and of how her team brings their different strengths together to meet the needs and interests of their clients. “In the near future, I plan to finish my scuba certification and set up small scuba-diving travel groups,” Jamie says. “Eventually, I would like to retire as a therapist and focus solely on this adventure. Travel can truly change lives!”
