Summer Winding Down Now that the “dog days” are increasingly in the rearview mirror, the summer days in the month of August can get hot, but we know cooler, autumn days are not too far away. But that is not to say we should wish away the heat and summer sun. There is plenty to enjoy and appreciate in August, including the many cool treats and places one can enjoy on a summer afternoon. Even your pets can get in on the act with places like BONE Dog Boutique or Barking Dog Bakery & Boutique, offering your four-legged family members a little delightful tidbit or a cooling bath to take the heat’s edge off a bit. Randolph Design + Build’s recently completed Prairie Style home in Edmond recalls the heady days of the early 20th century and Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs. We go out to Camp Cadence and Cadence Equestrian in Edmond and see the horses in action, as young day campers learn about the equestrian world in a safe and bucolic environment. Plus, the kids get to do all sorts of other activities, with horses all around. It was really neat! Empire Slice House opened its third location in the OKC Metro, up in downtown Edmond, in the Railyard District. It’s a terrific pizza parlor where you can buy a slice or a whole pie. During their soft opening in late June, the place was packed and customers were quite happy and satisfied. Traveling with pets can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. A veterinarian here in Oklahoma City offers some suggestions to folks traveling with their pets, simple suggestions that can make the trip happy and fun for the humans and the animals making their journey. And that’s just the beginning, as we wind down a fun summer. Please enjoy our August issue and let us know what you think.

Oklahoma City's Adam and Michaela Fitzpatrick love cats. And they love taking care of them and finding homeless felines forever homes. They also love coffee and coffee culture. Their admiration of cats and coffee led to the creation of Don't Stress Meowt Cafe, which is in the process of being constructed by Adam, a trained engineer. Watch these pages for updates on when you can see cats, drink coffee and fall in love.

Empire Slice House, founded in 2013 by Rachel Cope, started off in Oklahoma City’s Plaza District on NW 16th Street, only to move half-ablock away, while a new Empire Slice opened in Nichols Hills Plaza and in the Tulsa Arts District. General Manager Phil Rogers said Cope’s concept worked very well and Cope “saw an opportunity in Edmond.” Empire’s newest pizza parlor is complete with pop culture posters and decorations, just like the original.

A mainstay in central Oklahoma City, Classen View Veterinary Clinic has been seeing house pets — and more — for decades. They have a hardworking, knowledgeable staff.

My daughter gave me the book “How to Live Like The Little Prince” for Father’s Day. The book is written as a guide to “rediscovering imagination, adventure, and awe.” She told me how she remembers me reading it to her when she was little and how we discussed the adventures of the Little Prince. As I delved into this book, it reminded me of a psychology book I read years ago that stated that fantasy and reality are blended together in the early years of a child’s mind. The example given was if you tell a child to act/be a dinosaur, they will be a dinosaur for the rest of the day, fully immersed in their prehistoric world. If you tell an adult to do the same, they will lose interest quickly. The reality of their life wins against the reality of being a dinosaur. Of course, I am not advocating for adults to live in the fantasy world of being a dinosaur or to pretend to be the Little Prince. I think adults can relearn a powerful lesson from children. The lesson is that we can be whomever we decide to develop ourselves into. First, imagine the life and career you want, and then begin the steps to turn that fantasy into a reality. I honestly believe it’s never too late to do anything in the life you set your mind to. It’s never too late to be the person you’ve always wanted to be. Bigger than them, the boy who refuses to give up in Peter Pan is the plight of Captain Hook being chased by the ticking clock of time and death in the form of a crocodile that swallowed a clock. Don’t chase the frustration of lost youth as you run from the fear of the ticking clock. I often say I’m always older, but never old. Medically speaking, it is said that every cell in your body is replaced every three years. That means, every three years, there is a new you. So who do you want to be? What do you want to do? In three years, what version will you be?

Surrounded by woodland on three sides, Mike and Teresa Bergman’s home is the sort of house that takes you back in time when Frank Lloyd Wright and Walter Burley Griffin were the lead architects and designers of homes in what is known as the “Prairie Style.” Prairie Style was developed by Wright in the early 20th century at his suburban Chicago Oak Park Studio, a bold new approach to domestic architecture, which Wright developed and his one-time partner Griffin would also utilize, primarily in the upper Midwest. In fact, other architects connected with Wright would later be dubbed “The New School of the Middle West,” which included William Gray Purcell and Griffin’s wife, Marion Mahony Griffin. The “prairie” in Prairie Style is a reference to the broad, flat prairie landscape of the middle part of the United States. Thus, the Wright-developed Prairie Style homes were also broad with flat roofs, making them distinctly “American” at the beginning of the 20th century, later dubbed “the American Century.” Talking to home builder and designer Gary Randolph, of Nichols Hills-based Randolph Design & Build, who has overseen some 400 building and design projects since relocating from Weatherford to Edmond in the 1980’s, OKC City Lifestyle learned that the Bergmans approached Randolph several years ago with an idea for a Prairie Style home in a secluded woodland area that was adjacent to the Kilpatrick Turnpike. It was an exciting project for Randolph, not without its challenges, but overall turning out the way he had planned, complete with a beautiful outdoor swimming pool in the backyard that is complete with a waterfall and a hot tub, something Teresa Bergman loves. Randolph said the Bergmans came to him at Randolph Design & Build with an idea for a custom-built house. Using ideas and plans offered to him by the Bergmans, Randolph followed in the Prairie Style to create the home. Randolph, along with wife Trish and daughter Ashley were amazed at every feature of the house, inside and out. As for Randolph, he embraces new projects with excitement, mixed with ease and confidence. “I draw every day,” Randolph said. “Drawing, planning or estimating.” And the result was an amazing home, spanning 100 years from the original Prairie Style homes of Frank Lloyd Wright's day.

In her paintings, Chickasaw and Muscogee artist Danielle Fixico uses a combination of symbols and materials from her southeastern heritage to raise awareness of women’s issues in First American communities. In a Chickasaw Nation newsletter, she expressed her belief that education is vital for a successful education and noted that her career goal is to become a professor in the College of the Muscogee Nation, where she will work to inspire her students to change the world and make it a better place for later generations. Works by Danielle, currently a second-year master of fine arts candidate in painting at the University of Oklahoma, and three other First American women from various tribes— all of whom are native to Oklahoma—are currently featured in a compelling exhibition at Exhibit C Gallery, located in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district.

Heartwork: Artistry by Modern First American Women, which continues through Oct. 31, also features the work of Natalie Miller, Amber L. DuBoise-Shepherd and Joyce Nevequaya-Harris. “This exhibit highlights the unique perspectives and stories of First American women,” said Paige Williams Shepherd, director of corporate development, for the Chickasaw Nation. “Their art is an important cultural lens we’re fortunate to promote at Exhibit C.” Also featured in the Heartwork exhibition:

JOYCE NEVAQUAYA-HARRIS As a young girl, Joyce, who is enrolled with the Comanche Nation and is a descendant of the Chickasaw, Choctaw and Crow Nations, was surrounded by art and artists, including her late father, the renowned Doc Tate Nevaquaya, a self-taught artist and native flute revivalist. Joyce said that she often thinks of her dad when immersed in her art and is drawn to the use of color, often painting subjects and designs on a single canvas.

NATALIE MILLER Best known for her work with acrylics, Natalie’svibrant use of color on canvas explores linear abstractions, bold color combinations and a playful colliding of geometric forms. Her innate ability to manage color tone stems from more than a decade of working professionally in graphic and textile design. Her visual journey connects her past with her present, drawing from early and contemporary textiles, like ribbon skirts, and is inspired by her natural attraction to saturated colors. Natalie is a Chickasaw artist and an alumna of Oklahoma Christian University.

AMBER L. DUBOISE-SHEPHERD Depicting experiences from her daily life, Amber’s drawings and paintings are her interpretation of the world around her as seen through the lens of her First American heritage and traditions. With a blend of different First American cultures, including Navajo, Sac and Fox and Prairie Band Potawatomi, her parents taught Amber and her siblings the family’s tribal cultures and spiritual ways. She now draws upon this in her art using oils as well as pen and ink to bridge traditional First American subjects with contemporary styles. Amber is a graduate of Oklahoma State University and is a member of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, where she was a Spotlight Artist in 2021.

In 1971, Peter Townshend’s song “Going Mobile”— celebrating freedom and traveling the open road— debuted on The Who’s album, Who’s Next. Forty-six years later, Laney Dicksion celebrated going mobile when she launched Furst Class Canine Mobile Grooming Salon and Spa, LLC, which serves Oklahoma City and its surrounding communities, from Goldsby to Edmond/Arcadia and most everywhere along the I35 corridor, as well as the Greater Tulsa Area from Broken Arrow and Bixby to Owasso. “Interestingly enough,” she said, “we have the largest service area in the state at this time.” Laney chose to go mobile for several reasons. “Personally, I have always preferred ‘express’ type services for the comfort of my clients. As you drive up the hill on Air Depot Road, crossing Cowbell Creek, one feels suddenly transported to what looks like Kentucky horse country. Green grass. Fences. Plenty of equine lazily eating said grass on the pleasant property. Encompassing 50 acres in a bucolic area of Edmond’s north side, Camp Cadence is just the sort of place where children can be around horses and get in touch with nature, all in a safe and welcoming environment. The owner and operator of Camp Cadence is Christy Buchanan. As she tells it, back in 2006, when her daughter Rebecca was younger and still learning equestrian skills, she drove up to the property, which was for sale, and realized this had to be the place for the horseback riding camp she envisioned. “It was a spontaneous decision,” Buchanan said. “And it’s a dream I had my whole life.” The children who attend the camp during the summer – children like Cordelia and Felicity – told this writer that they love learning about horses and taking care of them and riding on them over the course of a fun-filled week. Among the skills they offer during the weeklong summer camps include: • Perfect introduction to horses • Horseback riding instruction • No previous experience necessary • Horsemanship skills Boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15 are allowed to enjoy indoor and outdoor riding on ponies and horses in a safe environment featuring superior facilities. It’s more fun and memories are quickly made. Buchanan and her young volunteers keep the children busy each day during the week, a week which also includes art projects that involve the colorful painting of horseshoes. Maintaining the Status Quo During Divorce After a divorce has been filed, there can be a lot of loose ends for the parties in terms of how to deal with items like payment of bills, child custody, and support issues, etc. This can be problematic in many respects because right after a divorce has been filed, there are not normally any orders in place through the court. Without any orders in place, many are not sure what they should do and what they shouldn’t do. In many cases, the parties will ultimately end up in court on a pedente lite or temporary motion (or something called similar in various jurisdictions). In these motions, the parties ask the court to enter an order as to payment of bills, child custody, and support

issues, etc., while the case is pending. Oftentimes, the parties may not agree on these items and a judge will have to decide. In other cases, the parties may be able to agree. But before a pedente lite or temporary motion being heard, judges ordinarily are looking for the maintenance of the status quo. The laws can certainly vary by state. Individuals should clearly get the advice of an attorney licensed and competent to practice law in their jurisdiction for specific advice. But as a general rule, maintenance of the status quo pending further order of the court is what lots of judges are hoping for from the parties. That means that the parties are generally expected to pay bills and obligations in the same

manner as before the divorce. Parties are also expected to give each other access to the children. Money and assets are generally not to be moved, transferred, encumbered, or concealed. 1. PERIODIC WATER BREAKS “If you stop, you can let your pet have a drink of water and let it stretch out a bit. It can be hard being in one place for a long period of time,” Clark said.

Your pet cat will be more comfortable upon arrival at your destination if you let it roam in a small room with a litter box, food bowl and water bowl.

2. DON’T FEED YOUR PET TOO MUCH DURING THE TRIP “If they have a full stomach, they can get motion sickness. While most dogs don’t (get motion sickness), there are those that can. It is better to be on the safe side” and feed the animal the minimum until you reach your destination.

3. CERTAIN MEDICATIONS CAN HELP “For dogs who do get motion sickness, obviously talk to your veterinarian before the trip. But a few medications that can help include Benadryl and Pepcid,” Clark said.

4. TRAVEL GEAR For those with dogs and cats, having the pet loose in the vehicle doesn’t always make sense or work. It can prove unsafe. A crate that is secure to anchor points in the cargo area works well.

5. IDENTIFICATION “Microchipping is a big one,” he said. “Collars are great, but say your pet gets loose during a stop and the collar somehow comes off. 6. GETTING FAMILIAR WITH NEW SPACE As noted in Real Simple magazine, giving your pet time to familiarize itself with its new, temporary environment is helpful.
