OKC's Cinema Brewery: Flix Brewhouse Just over two years ago, Texas-based, high-end theater chain Flix Brewhouse opened its doors in Oklahoma City at 850 Broadway Extension. And while it took place in the midst of a pandemic, owner Allan L. Reagan told this reporter back then. As Allan L. A New Dining Experience in OKC Just the Tip of the Iceberg Tellers, Great Hall Bar and Library of Distilled Spirits now open
Many Oklahomans have been keeping up with the transformation of the National Building into a Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel. Even more exciting for a foodie like myself is the new restaurants that will be a part of the hotel experience. The Tellers Restaurant, The Great Hall Bar, and the just-opened Library of Distilled Spirits (located in a bank vault) are open, with Stock and Bond Steakhouse coming soon. I recently had the opportunity to dine at Tellers Restaurant to experience the bar drinks from Hall Bar and the great Italian food from Tellers. I was pleased to discover an authentic, fine Italian dining experience. The restaurant sits on the right side of the Great Hall Bar and offers impressive views of the original bank lobby with its high ceilings. The seating is spacious, giving an intimate feeling to each table. For Dinner, I started with the National Old Fashioned as I am a bourbon fan. The drink was perfect. I also ordered a bottle of wine from Montalcino. This bottle is personally significant to me as my oldest daughter will be getting married in Italy at this vineyard, and I became acquainted with it in February while in Italy. We choose different appetizers, Yellowfin Tuna Crudo and Beef Meatballs, for a sea and land taste of the menu. Both are excellent and well presented. For the main course, I went with Parmigiana. Being of Italian descent and growing up eating a lot of Italian food, I always choose something very basic when I try out a new Italian restaurant. A great Italian restaurant will make a basic dish extraordinary. This dish hit the mark. I am not a dessert person, but my wife Tara is. She ordered the Chocolate Panna Cotta; if you love desserts, you will love it. I was tempted into a few bites. June 18th, 2022, will be my wife and I’s 28th anniversary. With my daughter’s wedding only a few months away, we choose to stay local to celebrate. I booked a suite at The National and another dinner reservation at Tellers to celebrate. I am looking forward to another great meal with my bride and trying out the recently opened Library of Distilled Spirits.

Gala raises funds for improvements at OKC Zoo
From out in the parking lot of the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden, you could hear the throb of pounding drums. “Where am I,” I muttered to myself. It turned out to be the hypnotic rhythms of the 15-member, Dallas-based Bandan Koro African Drum & Dance Ensemble. This high-energy musical group were providing the authentic African-themed entertainment for the Under African Skies gala and fundraiser here at the Oklahoma City Zoo and co-sponsored by the Oklahoma Zoological Society. The OKC Zoo Gala, according to communications director Candice Rennels, was for the currently-under-construction Expedition Africa exhibit, which is the zoo’s largest habitat expansion in histor y. With tickets selling out within weeks, funds raised from OKC Zoo Gala will benefit the Oklahoma City Zoo’s latest and largest habitat expansion in its history, Expedition Africa.

Slated to open June 2023, Expedition Africa will feature enhanced animal habitats for giraffe, honey badger, flamingos, zebra, okapi, wildebeest and more while creating new and immersive guest experiences. The June 3rd event, presented by John and Claudia Hollman Affiliated Fund, recognized the dedicated individuals who have amplified the Oklahoma City Zoo’s mission of connecting Oklahomans with the world’s wildlife and wild places. Additionally, the 2022 OKC Zoo Gala Legacy Honorees include Byron Gambulos, Don and Carolyn Zachritz and the Kirkpatrick Foundation and Kirkpatrick Family Fund. Speaking to the large crowd enjoying beef tenderloin and shrimp, OKC Zoo’s executive director and CEO Dwight Lawson welcomed everyone to the gala and spoke highly of the zoo’s accomplishments. “It’s an honor to be highlighting these extraordinary awardees and acknowledge their passion for the Zoo,” Lawson said. “Their significant

contributions to the growth of the Oklahoma City ZOO have made it the premiere destination it is today, treasured by millions who have visited.” And Mandy Heaps, Oklahoma Zoological Society executive director, said “Our success wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and care provided by our Zoo Gala honorees. I am certain that their examples of generosity will inspire Oklahoma City community to join us in supporting the Zoo’s newest expansion, Expedition Africa.” Oklahoma City resident and longtime zoo supporter Gayle Townley said she had recently traveled to several countries in Africa, including Kenya and Tanzania and took part in a safari, taking in the wild experience that is being reflected here at the zoo. The live auction held during the gala resulted in a lot of bidding, including for a painting by artist Zonly Looman of Edmond, who painted a lion and elephant during the event. Resultingly, over $200,000 was raised to help the zoo through the evening’s auction. After the recognition of the honorees, Bandan Koro’s drum performance and a three-course meal, a Twilight After Party, presented by Devon Energy, was held, including complimentary drink tickets, hors d’oeuvres, food truck access, photo oppoirtunities, dancing, unlimited carousel rides and a vist to the Herpetarium. The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the last entry no later than 4 p.m. Regular admission is $12 for adults and $9 for children ages 3-11 and seniors ages 65 and over. Children two and under are admitted free.

THE ART OF TRAVEL During my world travels, I’ve had the privilege of assembling a priceless portfolio of paintings. No, not a physical collection of paintings. These “paintings”—or visual memories, if you will—are images lovingly gathered in my mind of the many and diverse people, places and things I have encountered on journeys taken on foot or by car, train, plane and/or ship. The Art of Travel—for traveling is an art— can be as beautiful as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa hanging in The Louvre in Paris or as confusing as a paint on a canvas blown on by a straw. Just in my 23 years of being in Oklahoma plus 21 in the travel industry, my mind’s portfolio has filled many pages. One of my most memorable trips was sailing around South America’s Cape Horn on a Celebrity Cruise Line ship. The 14-day journey started in Chili and ended in Buenos Aires. Sailing Cape Horn is both dangerous and exciting, with some comparing it to climbing Mount Everest. We visited museums and historical sites at all the ports of call prior to actually turning around the cape.

The paintings and pictures of the many shipwrecks that resulted in agony and defeat featured at these sites will make your head swim and give appreciation to the fact you were not sailing in a wooden ship. In one museum, we found a pencil sketching by Van Gogh. We were up at 4 a.m. to sit on the deck as we started the turn, our captain reminded us that there would be rough seas, and there were. I was so glad we were on a large passenger ship and equally as happy when the voyage around Cape Horn was completed safely. On another adventure quest, my husband, Bentley, and I stayed in the Bovey Castle in England. It was like walking back in time; what a beautiful picture this trip painted in my mind! We took a stroll along a hedge that was supposed to be two miles long; six or seven miles later, we went through a gate into a 14th-century cemetery. After reading headstones for over an hour, we left to have a pint at the Ring of Fire Tavern. Italy, especially Rome, will always be my most favorite place to visit; “paintings” from these visits probably fill a quarter of

my collection. In October of 2016, our company composed a customized trip to Rome for our church, St Andrew’s Catholic Church of Moore, with the Globus Family of Brands. We had the most wonderful guide, Armando, who arranged visits to the Four Major Papal Basilicas of Rome and a rare visit to the Pontifical North American College, where two young friends were studying to become priests. The timing of the trip was coordinated with the 2016 Holy Door Jubilee. We entered the Holy Door of St. Peters Basilicas early in the morning. Very few were in the building, so we were able to stand close to Michelangelo’s “Pieta.” Father Jack celebrated Mass for us at the Alter of St. John XXIII. The next Jubilee of The Holy Doors will be in 2025. Another beautiful setting that contributed to a moving memory.

Another pleasant memory that is painted in my mind was implanted while traveling to New Zealand and Australia. While in New Zealand, we went out on an America’s Cup racing yacht sponsored by Emeritus Airlines. I was able to take the helm of the yacht for a little while; the captain gave me a very awkward grin when I told him that my husband rarely let me drive the car with him in it. Another great adventure destination is Iceland. That country’s majestic horses are a beautiful breed native to the land of ice and fire. Unlike horses in our country, the slightly built horse is resilient to the elements and sleeps laying down. A tour I believe everyone should experience is the Beaches of Normandy. To this day, when I think of the events on the beaches, I get cold chills. One evening, as we stood near the Americans’ Cemetery as they lowered the flags and played taps, I swear you could feel the spirits of the men and women.

Most recently, we sailed on the Regent Seven Seas Explorer during the holiday season. Regent Seven Seas is the world’s most luxurious cruise lines. On this all-inclusive vacation, we enjoyed a balcony suite with a fullsize bathtub, which made me happy. If you are seeking a trip that will paint tons of memories, try a Rocky Mountaineer Train Tour across the Canadian Rockies. We were wined and dined in dome Gold Leaf car service. We had the rare opportunity to see a “white” brown bear, which are also called Spirit Bears.

The Hedges' most recent trip was to beautiful Kauai.
We have sailed around the Hawaiian Islands on The Pride of America. While in Honolulu, I will never forget attending the dedication of the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor. At the end of dedication, the announcer said, “You are dismissed, men of the USS Oklahoma”; taps were played, and young cadets walked away from behind the pillars at the memorial. It was breathtaking. When you go to Honolulu, be sure to plan time to visit Ford Island at Pearl Harbor, where the USS Oklahoma Memorial is located. Many of our trips include family tours or voyages. This past May, we spent a week in Kauai in a lovely condo on the beach with my daughter and her family. One day, we drove the Waimea Canyon scenic route; the next day we took a snorkeling catamaran tour to Na Pali coast. As I peruse my personal Arts of Travel memories, I feel blessed to have had the fortune to visit so many wonderful places around the world. It was on May 2, 2016, when two-year old Caleb Lennon Wile passed away in his sleep. And despite a thorough investigation and an autopsy, no cause of death was discovered. Caleb’s life was stopped short due to something called Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood, or SUDC. Bernie Wile, Caleb’s mother, said she helped start The Caleb Effect as a way to emulate her kind and compassionate son, who, in his short life, brought happiness and joy to so many. Wile said she would have an event on the second of each month, as it was May 2nd when he died. But she said it made more sense to be “Nice on the Ninth” of the month, since Caleb was born on Feb. 9th. On the ninth, she said they pick a different cause to highlight as well as support the SUDC Foundation. Right now there is no targeted funding for SUDC, which remains a bit of a medical mystery, like Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS. “Right now there is no targeted federal funding,” she said. “In the meantime we are trying to raise awareness and raise funds.” For instance, they recently had a fun run, bringing Caleb Effect supporters together, while for those not near Oklahoma City can connect online. While it is an Oklahoma-centric organization, Wile said The Caleb Effect has followers in all 50 states and a few foreign countries. “We’re trying to get the word out,” she said. “We want it to go as far and wide as possible.” With so much division in the world, Wile said her son would want compassion and kindness to bring people together, as he did in his short, radiant and contagiously happy life, cut short by SUDC. “Caleb was a master at connecting with people,” Wile said. “We want to spread that (ability to connect) for him. As the sun begins to set on a recent weekday afternoon, the regulars begin to to file into Bellinis. At the bar, both Trinity and Keven — two of Bellini’s exceedingly knowledgeable bartenders — are taking drink orders, including orders for their signature Bellini and a classic Old Fashioned. “All of our bartenders are very well trained,” reassured Trinity. One can just feel the cares of the day melt away when such a statement is made. At least it was for me. The space in Bellinis is cozy and inviting. One feels welcome the moment they enter. You know you are in Oklahoma City, but you also feel transported into a new place and time. And what better way to wind down the day than with one of the aforementioned Old Fashioneds or Bellinis or, even, a Cosmopolitan. With an order for an Old Fashioned, led off with a healthy serving of Bulleit Bourbon (two ounces), Trinity crafts his drink with Cherry Luxardo liqueur, two dashes of bitters, orange zest and “stir over a large rock” of ice, naturally. But when it comes to the signature cocktail at Bellini’s, it is the Bellini. But that should go without saying. Bellini’s is very proud of their key cocktail with its bewitching ingredients and icy texture. “Oh, it’s really popular,” Trinity explained. “Along with the Cosmo.” Your humble correspondent did not try the Cosmopolitan — although I was tempted to do so – the aforementioned Bellini was a treat. The alcohol content was pretty strong, but it just screamed “summer!” One other cocktail Trinity noted, that gets ordered as the mercury rises is the Flamingo, a cocktail he seemed to take some pride in. “It’s a light, floral, fruity one with pineapple rum,” Trinity said as he took an order from some customers further down the bar. And it is the Bellini’s Bar that is front and center when you enter Bellini’s. It is mirrored, well-stocked and exceedingly inviting. But the place to be, if the weather cooperates, is out on Bellini’s patio. It is here, where you can sit with friends, enjoy a signature Bellini cocktail and say farewell to another day amidst the wisteria, the pond with the swans and geese and that ever-present and expansive Oklahoma sky. Property Division in Divorce Many people believe that divorce is simply the ending of a marriage. However, the reality is that the process involves several key factors, including the division of property. This can often be one of the most contentious aspects of any divorce. It is important for parties to understand the laws surrounding property division in their jurisdiction. Most states uphold an equitable distribution statute aimed at providing the fairest possible division of property. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for people starting the divorce process to misunderstand how equitable distribution works. First, it is vital not to confuse the term “equitable” with “equal.” Most states uphold an equitable distribution law that strives to ensure the fairest possible division of marital property in a divorce. By contrast, some states uphold equal community property laws that ensure strict 50/50 division of marital property. While the equitable distribution process is more complex, it typically leads to more agreeable results for all parties involved than policies in community property states. The first step in an equitable distribution determination is identifying the full extent of the divorcing couple’s marital property. To do so, it is vital to differentiate between “separate” property
that belongs to just one spouse and “marital” property that belongs to both spouses. Separate property typically includes assets owned before the marriage began, gifts, and inheritances. In some cases, separate property transmutes to marital property when it meets specific requirements. The second phase of equitable distribution is the actual division of marital property. The judge must assess multiple factors to reach the fairest possible determination in the matter, including: • • • • •
Each spouse’s income and earning capacity. Each spouse’s conduct as it relates to marital property. Divorcing parents’ custody rights if children are involved. Any prenuptial contract. The amount of separate property each spouse owns.
These are just some of the most crucial factors a judge must consider when analyzing property division in a divorce case. Ultimately, the judge has the final say. As a result, many couples may look toward alternative dispute resolution methods like mediation as opposed to traditional divorce litigation. If parties are willing to negotiate privately, they can keep their property division determination firmly within their own control. Regardless of what path parties
choose to handle their divorce, financial disclosure requires careful consideration. Financial disclosure means providing complete and accurate information that clearly lists all relevant details about all property and assets. Both parties must provide a complete list of all separate property they intend to claim, as well as records of all marital property and assets. Unfortunately, some people heading for divorce attempt to hide assets or intentionally waste marital assets out of a desire for personal gain or to spite their soon-to-be ex-spouse. These are unwise decisions the court will eventually reveal. If the court discovers that parties intentionally hid or squandered marital assets for personal gain, they should expect these actions to carry significant consequences.
