Boy, April is going to be a busy month here in Oklahoma City! As the weather warms up, the events and attractions in our city get even hotter. In this month's issue, you'll find lots of stuff to keep you and your family busy and exploring. One of my favorite events of all time, the Oklahoma City Festival of Arts, will be held in Bicentennial Park downtown starting April 19. In addition to a lot of stunning artwork, the festival will have live entertainment, shows and of course, FOOD! The Redbud Classic returns this year after taking a pandemic hiatus. This race/walk goes to support a good cause, and it's always a lot of fun. There's a race for everyone during the Redbud Classic - even one for your furry canine friend. We also have a peek at an impressive new exhibit at Exhibit C, Oklahoma City's premier First Americans art gallery. How We Gather is an immersive look at First American traditions and interpretations of the idea of "gathering," and it's well worth a visit. Our columnist Peter Levinson also gives us the lowdown on some of the best trails for mountain biking in Oklahoma City. Even better, you don't need to be an expert mountain biker to use our public trails... you just need a bike! Spring is also a good time to look at replacing your countertops to give your kitchen or bathroom a fresh new look. We spoke with our friends at Castle Rock Countertops about new trends, how to freshen up your look and what they can do to help you. As always, we appreciate you, our readers, most of all. OBI Donates Centrifuge Machine to OKC Zoo The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden and Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) are coming together to help save an endangered species, Asian elephants. OBI recently donated an industrial grade, centrifuge machine to the OKC Zoo for its Joan Kirkpatrick Animal Hospital. The Zoo is committed to providing the best care possible for its animals and this specialized centrifuge machine will be used for treating its Asian elephants for the elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV).

The Redbud Classic, Oklahoma City’s esteemed running and cycling tradition, will celebrate its 39th year of bringing fun, fitness and philanthropy to the community in 2022. Registration is now open for all Redbud events set for the weekend of Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3, 2022. Each year, the Redbud Foundation Board of Directors selects an Oklahoma City nonprofit organization with whom to partner and serve as the beneficiary of event proceeds. Annually, multiple agencies apply to the Redbud Classic as potential beneficiaries. The CARE Center, a nonprofit organization with a mission to prevent child abuse and provide opportunities for healing and hope for children in Oklahoma County, was selected to serve as the 2022 beneficiary. “We are so excited to bring the tradition of fun, fitness and philanthropy to Oklahoma City once again, but more importantly, we look forward working with our community to support The CARE Center’s mission of putting an end to child abuse,” Redbud Classic Race Director Kristin Hersom said. The CARE Center is Oklahoma County’s only child advocacy center and works to serve children who have experienced child abuse. In their commitment to help children, The CARE Center has two abuse prevention programs and focuses its efforts on developing an environment where children can begin to heal through holistic care. “We are elated to have been chosen as Redbud’s beneficiary this year and look forward to our partnership

as it will help us provide the services that children and families need to confront and overcome abuse and neglect,” CARE Center Director of Development & Communications Camden Ottaviani said. The 2022 Redbud Classic features events for the whole family starting on Saturday, April 2, with 10- and 30-Mile Bike Tours, a 50-Mile Fondo and a 1-Mile Kids’ Fun Run, in addition to the inaugural 1-Mile Woof Walk. The events continue on Sunday, April 3, with 5K and 10K timed runs, 5K Wheelchair Event, 2-Mile Walk and 2-Mile Baby Stroller Derby. New in 2022, the 1-Mile Woof Walk will take place immediately following the 1-Mile Kids’ Fun Run on Saturday, April 2. Registration costs $15 per dog and each owner will receive a medal along with a bandana for their pet. Dogs are required to be leashed at all times, with no retractable leashes allowed. The Redbud Classic events continue past the finish line with the Redbud BASH. The BASH will be held Sunday, April 3, at 12 p.m. in the finish area at Nichols Hills Plaza. There will be a variety of food from some of Oklahoma’s premier food trucks, beverages from COOP Ale Works and other sponsors, free family-friendly games and activities, music and other entertainment. Interested participants can register online. No in-person registration will be available. By registering early at redbud.org, participants are more likely to receive the lowest available registration prices, their choice of T-shirt size as well as a timing tag.

On the wall, a subtle scene plays out. A calm and focused First American woman sits on the ground, a basket nestled in her lap, as she and two children pull wild onions from the ground. Painted by Chickasaw/Choctaw artist Norma Howard, the painting may seem straightforward, but its depth paints layers of the gathering process. Opened this March and running through June 30, the exhibit “As We Gather: Plants and Foods of Our Land” explores the unique heritage of the five First American artists at Exhibit C Gallery. Exhibit C Gallery is Oklahoma City’s premier First American art gallery located in Bricktown. The gallery itself celebrates the artistic work of Chickasaw and southeastern First American artists and Native artists from across the United States.

The new exhibition features artists Brent Greenwood (Chickasaw/Ponca), Johnnie Lee Diacon (Mvskoke/Creek), Howard, Cherokee basket weaver Risi Thelander and Cherokee basket weaver Rose Drake. “We partnered with five First American artists, and they presented their interpretation of the theme of the show.” said Paige Shepherd, director of corporate development and tourism for the Chickasaw Nation. “What’s important for Exhibit C when we partner with First American artists is that we do not dictate the artistic perspective and the artistic lens that they are providing per each show. We love when we get all of the artwork together and see the various applications of how the artists have interpreted the show’s theme and the title.” “As We Gather: Plants and Foods of Our Land” displays dynamic and vibrant works of art in different mediums. One of the artists, Brent Greenwood, said various artists have helped shape his perspective as a Chickasaw/Ponca artist, and he lets the southeastern Mississippi culture and the drum and spirit of his culture guide his art. “We are blessed with tremendous First American artists that represent various tribes and different geographical regions of the United States. They bring their unique perspective from the cultural lens of their tribe and their experiences,” said Paige. “That is displayed and showcased in

every show that Exhibit C has curated and is celebrated in, ‘As We Gather.’” Exhibit C Gallery aims to work with any First American artist who wants to display their work, and to promote, showcase and highlight the work of First American artists. For visitors in Oklahoma City for the first time or locals who have lived here for some time, the gallery acts as a way to expose the public to First American artists. “With Exhibit C Gallery’s proximity to the new convention center, Scissortail Park and the Omni Hotel, we get a lot of people who may be here for a conference or convention,” said Paige. “It is our opportunity to give visitors this lens of the fabric of Oklahoma that’s so important. We encourage them to take a piece of authentic artwork home with them or a souvenir that represents the First American culture in Oklahoma.” In addition to the featured exhibit, the gallery showcases numerous other First American artists and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1 E. Sheridan in Oklahoma City. All art and retail located in Exhibit C Gallery are for purchase. “We are a nationally renowned First American gallery that premiers artwork by First American artists from all over the United States,” Paige said. “Our artwork comes from artists across the United States, and we’re proud to showcase their works.”

HIT THE TRAILS! OKLAHOMA CITY’S CYCLING TRAILS CATER TO ALL LEVELS

bluff creek Bluff Creek, located on the north side of Lake Hefner, offers roughly 3.6 miles of trail in a single loop. What makes this trail fun is the very tight turns, few drop-ins, and the quick climbs. I have found this trail is perfect for beginners as it offers easy opportunities to bypass any of the more technical moments.

Did you know that you are surrounded by mountain bike trails right here in the OKC Metro? I didn’t before moving back after my stint in the Marine Corp. Before leaving my duty station in North Carolina, I sold my mountain bike thinking I would have no use for it in Oklahoma City. How happy I became when I discovered these hidden gems right here in my backyard and how disappointed I was that I had already sold my bike. Thankfully, local bike pro shops have plenty of options that got me back in the saddle quickly. Oklahoma as a whole has multiple trails throughout our great State. lake arcadia Lake Arcadia has recently just completed reworking its multi-use trail. One time, it was a “back-andforth,” often having riders run back into each other. It now offers a loop style trail while still maintaining a 4, 6, 9 miles turnaround point for those looking for a little less cardio in their day. This trail is perfect for group rides where the experienced rider along with the beginner as technical sections have a bypass. On a side note, the street bike section is also excellent.

The Standard of Living Established by the Parties During Marriage Spousal maintenance cases can be one of the most contentious issues in divorce. States previously referred to spousal maintenance as alimony. In some states, the term is still used today. In many cases, one issue that can come up is the standard of living established by the parties during the marriage. In other words, one party may allege that they should receive an award of spousal maintenance. And one of the justifications for it is that they need it to maintain the standard of living that was established during the marriage. The argument, oftentimes, revolves around the lifestyle a party had during the marriage. For example, a party might cite the general area in which they lived. They might point to the types of activities and possessions in which they became accustomed. In some circumstances, they might point to items that one might consider more wants than needs, like vacations, spa ap-

pointments, country club memberships, etc. They then might argue that they need spousal maintenance (or alimony) so that they can enjoy this same lifestyle after the marriage. If there are minor children involved, they might argue that the same lifestyle should be maintained for the benefit of the children as well. The laws in every state vary in some ways based on what a court looks for in ordering spousal maintenance. Thus, it is important that any party consult with an attorney who is licensed and competent to practice law in their jurisdiction. Having said that, the lifestyle of the parties during the marriage can be one factor a court looks at in terms of ordering maintenance. Missouri does, as an example, list the standard of living during the marriage as one of the relevant factors in maintenance calculations. The same is true in Illinois as well as it relates to spousal maintenance. But if you look at the statutes in Missouri and Illinois, there are

various other factors that the court must look at in terms of spousal maintenance and the calculation of maintenance, including the need of the party seeking it. So, the standard of living of the parties during the marriage, while relevant, isn’t the end of the analysis. This makes it critical that any party who is seeking maintenance consult with an attorney about their specific situation to ensure that all the factors are appropriately looked at in their case. The event is set for April 19 to 24, continuing the yearly spring tradition. “I’m so excited Festival can finally be produced once again after the difficult time we all have been through this past year,” says Seth Lewis, Festival of the Arts Director. “Our artists and food vendors have also expressed their delight to once again be interacting with the community on such a grand scale.” Festival of the Arts has been an Oklahoma City tradition since 1967. The festival site has been extended this year all the way to Hudson Street, creating more space for food vendors and performances. Over 550 visual artists from across the nation jury for one of the highly coveted 144 spaces in the Plaza Artist area surrounding Bicentennial Park. The show features 12 mediums, ranging from paintings and photography to sculptures. Additionally, more than 200 performers of all ages will showcase their talents on stage. “Special thanks go-out to many departments of the city of Oklahoma City for their undying support and encouragement in the production of Festival of the Arts,” says Peter Dolese, Executive Director. “We simply could not have done it without their professionalism.
