Can it really be 2022 already? We are excited to transition from our old brand of Lifestyle Publications to our new brand of City Lifestyle as we blend our luxury print and national digital platforms together. Jerri Culpepper has been the managing editor of Cleveland County since we began in February of 2016 and Heide Brandes, the managing editor, of OKC has also been on board since the beginning of that publication. Oklahoma Sees Dramatic Increase In Camping Reservations A new report by Outdoorsy looking at the U.S. states where camping has grown the most over the past five years. Data from Recreation.gov—a trip planning and reservation portal for U.S. public lands—showed that camping reservations numbered nearly 3.3 million in 2020, up by about one-third from 2019. Oklahoma ranked 16th in the nation for growth in camping reservations. From 2015 to 2020, Recreation.gov reported an 82.8% increase in camping reservations made in Oklahoma. Consumer Cellular Says It Will Bring 300 New Jobs Wireless carrier Consumer Cellular announced it will bring more than 300 full-time and part-time jobs to Oklahoma City. Pay for fulltime employees average $54,000 per year, and employees are also eligible for tuition reimbursement and other incentives. The move to Oklahoma City marks the first time in the company’s 25 year history it has expanded outside of its headquarters in Arizona or Oregon offices.

The Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau (Visit OKC) announces a new digital passport aimed at guiding visitors to top attractions throughout the metro area while earning prizes and taking advantage of discounts along the way. “From museums to street art to urban parks, this free mobile passport will guide you to the best attractions in OKC,” said Zac Craig, president of Visit OKC. “We’ve made it easier than ever to find things to do around the city, take advantage of special offers and even earn exclusive Modern Frontier prizes.” The Modern Frontier Attractions Pass is free and doesn’t require any app downloads. Participants can sign up at visitokc.com/attractionspass by providing their name, email and mobile phone number. A link is then sent to their mobile phone which opens the passport and directs users how to add the button icon to their home screen for easy access any time. When visiting one of the 20+ attractions, simply present the phone to a staff member to redeem available discounts and check in to start earning prizes. Across the nation, Waters Edge Wineries exist for a single purpose—to bring the amazing world of wine to a wider audience, and to remove barriers that keep people from enjoying wine on a regular basis. The latest location of Waters Edge Wineries, which opened in Cleveland County in early December—brings the first winery of its kind to Moore. “We are so proud to bring something new and unique to Moore/Norman and south Oklahoma City,” explains Mara English, co-owner of Water’s Edge in Moore. Mara, along with husband Mike, said they’re happy to have opened their new urban winery, where they offer a perfect location for both expert and novice wine drinkers to enjoy. Located on the corner of SE 19th and South Broadway Avenue, Waters Edge allows patrons to enjoy custom-made wines that are fermented, bottled and corked in Oklahoma City. It’s also a perfect place to celebrate Valentine’s Day! “Waters Edge Winery is a family-owned winery,” Mara explains. “The original location thrived in downtown Oklahoma City for eight years before the previous owner decided to retire. My husband and I purchased it from him, and we couldn’t be more excited to add a new chapter to the storied history of this popular winery.”

There are 12 Waters Edge locations across the United States, and the Moore location is the newest. Waters Edge began in California in 2012; they describe their locations as “micro-wineries” that bring the best of wine culture to communities across the United States. All locations of Waters Edge are unique because they do not grow or crush the grapes that create their signature and specialty wines. Instead, they outsource the grapes from a global network of vineyards and growers. Grapes are sourced from some of the finest grape-growing regions of the world, such as Italy, France, New Zealand, Chile, Germany and California, and the actual wine production is handled onsite. “We source our grapes from the best vineyards located in the finest grape-growing regions around the world,” Mara explains. “Under the guidance of our head winemaker, Conner Meek, we handcraft each and every small batch of our wines locally. My favorite wine right now is the Almond Sparkle Sparkling Wine!” Two of Waters Edge’s most popular signature wines are Scandalous, a popular sweet black cherry dessert Pinot Noir, and Big Daddy Red, a rich Cabernet Sauvignon. “Those two wines are definitely ones I would recommend for guests to try, but I am sure everyone will find one that is their favorite,” Mara says.

Waters Edge combines the best of traditional winemaking with a cutting-edge wine bar experience. All Waters Edge Wineries offer a selection of delectable bistro-style appetizers and desserts, including charcuterie, Panini-style sandwiches, flatbread pizzas and artisan cheeses. In addition, the Moore winery will feature a variety of popcorn flavors made possible by Mike and Mara’s other business, Ace Party Supplies & Showtime Concessions in Moore. Waters Edge Winery offers high-quality wines, a relaxing atmosphere and a cultural experience. The Moore location features an industrial-chic atmosphere and a spacious lawn that Mike and Mara plan to utilize for special events and private parties. “We plan on doing outside events, tasting parties, private and custom labels for special occasions, and so much more,” Mara adds. Guests are invited to come to the Moore location to taste their selections of red wines, white wines and sangrias, as well as bottling parties and tours. Custom labeling is available for favorite blends or for personalized gifts, and Waters Edge will offer an exclusive wine club. Wine club memberships begin at $35 per month, and offer access to private events, discounts on wine-related purchases, wine tastings and more. “We were wine club members for about five years before we bought the franchise, and we would visit the downtown location a few times a week,” Mara says. “We can’t wait to meet everyone and will offer wine club memberships specials. We invite you to come to our new location and experience all that we have to offer.”

Valentines Day falling in February has a twofold pressure: 1) What restaurant should I make a reservation at and 2) Are there any reservations still available? The second question is about timing; the first question is about taste. Bourbon Love

I have a process when going into a new restaurant. First, I do a quick tour of the bar area to what is on the shelf. If the opportunity to speak to the purchaser for the establishment, I take it as I’ve found it may open new doors or bottles, I should say. One such conversation led to a 2oz pour of Elijah Craig’s 18 year single barrel (phenomenal pour) during a recent visit to Birra Birra Craft Pizza. Of course, many of the great steak houses in the Metro have good lists, but the best surprise I had was Burger Punk in the Paseo area. My wife Tara was craving a burger, and though I was not looking to have an after sip, how can one resist Woodford Double Oak with a great burger and fries (note always ask what a restaurant may have that’s not on the list). Here is a list of four that start with B in honor of Bourbon. Whether you want a great steak, fantastic pizza, or a juicy burger, these four restaurants do not disappoint when adding Bourbon to your order:

EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY HELPS PARTICIPANTS HEAL

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to be around horses, you know the calming and healing powers they possess. Horses are intelligent animals, each with a unique personality and changing mood that can be useful in treating a variety of both physical and psychological conditions. I spoke with Jennifer Ladd, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, who is also certified with Equine Assisted Growth And Learning Association, both as a Mental Health Professional and an Equine Specialist. Here, she talks about equine therapy and the horses she works with.

HOW DOES EQUINE THERAPY WORK? Eagala Model Equine Assisted Psychotherapy involves a collaborative effort between a licensed behavioral health provider, a horse professional and horses working with clients to address treatment goals. Participants learn about themselves and others by participating in experiential activities with horses and then processing feelings, behaviors and patterns. Patterns of behaviors, emotions and/or interactions arise that mirror patterns in clients’ lives. The activities are all on the ground—there is no riding.

According to the Eagala (www.eagala.org): “Those who are familiar with horses recognize and understand the power of horses to influence people in incredibly powerful ways. Like humans, horses are social animals. They have distinct personalities, attitudes and moods. An approach that works with one horse won’t necessarily work with another. At times, they seem stubborn and defiant. They like to have fun. Horses provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning, an effective technique when working with even the most challenging individuals or groups. Most importantly, horses mirror human body language and emotions. People must change themselves for the horses to respond differently. Horses are honest, which makes them especially powerful messengers and agents of change.” (www.eagala.org)

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF EQUINE THERAPY? EAP allows for processing of difficult issues and emotions in the external space of a horse arena, using horses and props to represent things and issues a person is struggling with. For some, this is less threatening, so it decreases the natural resistance that often occurs in the therapeutic process.

WHAT AGES AND DEMOGRAPHICS DO YOU SERVE? Dancing Spirit Ranch partners with Agape Counseling Services to provide services to individuals and families. All ages and demographics are welcome. Preschool children are only served as a part of a family unit and parents must be present. Dancing Spirit Ranch also partners with other local agencies and treatment facilities to provide EAP to the facilites’ clientele.

WHAT CONDITIONS DOES THIS THERAPY ADDRESS? Any mental or behavioral health issue can be addressed. The process begins with an assessment to determine needs and the development of a treatment plan. Activities are then structured to address treatment objectives specific to the client.

Currently, Dancing Spirit Ranch has three horses. Trixie is a large and elderly quarter horse. She is very gentle and compassionate. She is a good horse for those who have no horse experience and are nervous about being around such large animals. Archie is also a quarter horse. He is playful and likes to test boundaries. I often pair him with people who need to work on setting boundaries. Ginger is a POA (Pony of America). She is a rescue horse and has a history of severe trauma. She is chronically lame due to an injury she had when young that was not treated. While Archie and Trixie like everyone, Ginger tends to gravitate toward people who also have a history of trauma.

Other kinds of potential expert witnesses might be needed in a divorce or family law matter as well. These are just a few examples. The key no matter the situation is to enlist these experts as soon as possible. Many divorce and family law

matters can be set for court dates and/or trial relatives quickly. Many courts also set deadlines for the disclosure of expert witnesses. In some instances, an expert might even be able to help settle the case early before court dates of trial. If you delay hiring an expert, you can often end up in a position where it is too late to hire and have the expert ready for court. You could also find yourself in a position where you may be asking the court for a continuance to get an expert enlisted. This can delay the resolution to a case.
