HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE OKC LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE FAMILY! We wish you joy, happiness, health and peace this season. You might notice a few changes in the next few months. For one, the magazine has a new publisher and a new vision heading into the new year. Bryan Hallman, a native Oklahoman and no stranger to media, has taken over leadership of the publication and wants to provide more usable, entertaining, and impactful content. Keep your eyes peeled for a new era! In this month's magazine, you'll read all about a few new exciting things. For one, the Girl Scouts' Camp Trivera opened, making it the first STEM camp of its kind in the nation. A new restaurant in the works will be a truly dog-friendly eatery, and a local artist is making an underground art movement more popular in Oklahoma City. You'll also find some nice gift ideas if your loved ones have better health on their New Year's Resolutions, and we highlighted a few organizations that could really benefit from your end-of-year charitable donations.

Here to Help You Rebuild Your LifeÂŽ Settling a divorce or family law matter is something most parties desire. Trials are expensive. Not only are they expensive, but in a trial the result rests in the hands of one family court judge. Most reasonable parties do not want to put their case in the hands of one judge. To settle a divorce or family law matter, it usually takes one party to take the first step towards settlement. In other words, somebody has to extend the olive branch first and broach the topic of settlement. Settlement negotiations often begin with one party sending an offer through their attorney to the opposing counsel. While initial settlement offers do not always result in a settlement, it can open the door to more negotiations. Many ask if it matters who sends the initial settlement offer. If one party issues the first settlement offer, some worry that offer shows weakness. In some cases, where the positions are far apart, some fear sending a settlement offer is futile. However, sending a settlement offer does not ordinarily signal weakness. Instead, it shows that a party is willing to be reasonable to reach a constructive resolution to the case. It can indicate that they are ready to swallow their pride to reach a resolution. Most judges, before they hear a trial in a divorce or family law matter, also want to know if the parties have attempted settlement. When parties have not even made an attempt, some judges may have concerns. Settlement negotiations are technically inadmissible at trial. It is possible, however, that a judge could hold it against a party if they did not attempt meaningful settlement negotiations. Judges often know about the set-
Why You Should Send a Settlement Offer tlement efforts from pretrial or settlement conferences in a case. Instead of worrying about whether it looks weak to issue a settlement offer, parties should instead focus more on appearing reasonable to the court. Being reasonable often results in obtaining a positive result if the case ends up in trial. Further, a settlement offer can ultimately lead to a settlement. When there is a settlement, parties save money on attorneys’ fees. The parties can also put to rest the emotional anguish and stress of being in the midst of a divorce or family law matter. However, it is vital to have enough information about the finances or the particulars of the case. These details can be gathered through formal or informal discovery to make an informed settlement offer. To make an informed settlement, parties often need the tax returns and statements regarding all marital property and debt. When valuations are needed, the parties can hire experts to value marital property such as real estate, stock options, and business interests. With children involved, the parties may need school and medical records. Once this takes place, most parties should think about sending a settlement offer. Sending the initial settlement offer may not work, but it can begin the conversation. It also signals a willingness to negotiate and be reasonable. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to fam-

OKLAHOMA GOT THEIR FIRST LOOK AT A ONE-OF-A-KIND URBAN STEM CAMP OPENING IN THE HEART OF OKC’S ADVENTURE DISTRICT. Camp Trivera, a $12 million STEM camp, is designed to bring science and engineering, math and technology and the arts to life while offering a fun, outdoor urban experience for Girl Scouts throughout the state. Camp Trivera sits on approximately 17 acres of a 40-acre parcel just east of the Oklahoma City Zoo & Botanical Gardens, and will serve Girl Scouts, families and the community alike. From learning about aerodynamics ziplining across the lake to the OKC Zoo to testing their geological knowledge while climbing the indoor rock wall, these unique features, and many more STEM “surprises” that can be found across the property, are sure to have an impact on girls and inspire the next generation of leaders. The camp will also provide girls the opportunity to be comfortable in the outdoors – camping, hiking, kayaking – while also having indoor spaces for first-time campers who aren’t quite sure about traditional camping just yet. The first of its kind in the United States, Camp Trivera is made especially with tomorrow’s female leaders in mind. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is its focus, with features such as STEM classes focusing on astronomy taught by a NASA-certified instructor that can spark a lifelong interest in science fields. Labs are designed to give girls the foundation they need to pursue higher-level courses that correlate with future careers and

the girls will also be exposed to current and historical examples of women have helped pave the way for future generations. “STEM concepts and activities can be found throughout the venue. We want girls to dream big. Trivera is a perfect space for that,” said Shannon Evers, CEO of GSWESTOK. “These carefully-planned elements reflect a $12 million investment and more than three years of planning.” The camp features an indoor climbing wall, outdoor amphitheater, sleeping accommodations, a zip line from the camp across the lake and into the Oklahoma City Zoo, a hammock deck and a treehouse. The camp will be available for private rentals when it is not in use by the Girl Scouts. “Camp Trivera the first camp of its kind in that there is a STE(A)M surprise around every corner,” said Evers.
Fun and science go hand in hand.

OF VETERANS HOUGH EAR INSTITUTE WORKS TO RESTORE HEARING FOR OTHERS WHO SERVED DR. RICHARD KOPKE UNDERSTANDS BETTER THAN MOST DOCTORS HOW MILITARY SERVICE CAN CAUSE HEARING LOSS. Kopke spent 26 years in the U.S. Army before joining the Hough Ear Institute (HEI), where he is CEO. HEI is dedicated to restoring natural hearing, which disproportionately affects military veterans – more than half of U.S. troops who return from combat suffer from hearing loss and tinnitus. “HEI brings together world-class experts to research treatments for hearing loss and related conditions like tinnitus,” Kopke said. “We understand how hearing loss and tinnitus can affect veterans and contribute to depression and PTSD. We’re honored to assist military members. They give up so much to keep us safe, and they shouldn’t have to sacrifice their hearing.” HEI’s most important work is researching groundbreaking treatments for noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. The organization and its partners have developed a pill, known as NHPN-1010, which is awaiting Phase 2 testing. HEI is raising funds to conduct a proof-ofconcept study to test the pill’s ability to treat tinnitus. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, more than 933,000 veterans receive disability compensation for hearing loss, and nearly 1.3 million received compensation for tinnitus. In addition, many veterans score normally on hearing tests but have difficulty understanding speech. This condition, called auditory processing disorder, is often associated with blast exposure. Tinnitus is the number one disability among veterans and affects at least 1 in 10 American adults. People with tinnitus describe ringing sounds, a buzzing sound, a high-pitched whistle, or numerous other sounds. Worldwide, 466 million people suffer from hearing loss and one in seven individuals experience tinnitus. Of those, 48 million Americans are affected by hearing loss, with 50 million suffering from tinnitus, including 58,000 Oklahomans. At this time, no drug treatment or cure exists for noise-induced hearing loss or tinnitus. “We believe our research will ultimately help millions of people worldwide, including our soldiers and veterans,” Kopke said.

Red Solo Pup to open this spring at Chisholm Creek.
D
INING OUT IS MEANT TO BE A FAMILY EXPERIENCE — AND SOON, EVEN FURRY FAMILY
MEMBERS CAN JOIN THE FUN. Red Solo Pup, a new concept from Oklahoma City native Julianne Thomas, will debut in the Chisholm Creek in spring 2021. It will feature a off-leash dog park and restaurant/bar, which will allow for adequate social distancing. “Two years ago, our 5-year-old dog, Solo, passed away,” Thomas said. “His death was an unfortunate reminder that life is short, and we should spend as much time as possible with loved ones. Dogs are family, and our goal with the concept is to bring Oklahoma City families together in a way that’s never been possible before.” Red Solo Pup will honor Solo, acting as a communal space where dogs and their owners can play and eat together. Thomas, a 16-year restaurant veteran, is creating an approachable menu with plans to include items like burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs and salads. Both dine-in and grab-and-go options will be offered, and guests can also order food and beverages from a walk-up window. Only humans are allowed inside the restaurant, but leashed dogs are welcome on the patio. The 1.1-acre dog park will include separate areas for large and small dogs and feature mixed surfaces like turf, granite and mulch. “One of our biggest pet peeves about other dog parks in the metro area is they’re mostly dirt, and our dogs come home covered in red mud,” Thomas said. “At Red Solo Pup, dogs won’t leave dirtier than they arrived.” On-site bathing stations will be available for self-use or with the help of a staff member. Bark Rangers, as park staff will be called, will also help maintain the cleanliness of the park and be on-hand if a family decides to visit another Chisholm Creek entity while leaving their pets to play. Day passes, as well as monthly and yearly memberships, will be available for park use. People without dogs are welcome to access the restaurant without becoming members.

bullet journaling 101 ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN
PHOTOGRAPHY ESTÉE JANSSENS
Let’s face it—in today’s so-much-to-do-and-so-little-time cultural mindset, it
can be hard to keep track of everything we need to do. Wake up—did you get enough sleep? Brush your teeth. Feed the kids. Feed the dog. Get ready for work. Make your lunch. Those are just six things to think about in the span of 15 minutes after your alarm goes off.
With all of these things to keep track of and our lives moving a mile a minute,
anything we can find to streamline our obligations (and our thoughts) can be a lifesaver! Enter: bullet journaling. It’s equal parts calendar, meal tracker, diary, self care and, well, really anything else that you want to keep tabs on! The “mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system,” coined by creator Ryder Carroll, can help you master the art of intentional living—any way you want to.
