It is the only active public school in a botanical garden in the country. The sixth-graders get a variety of classes including gardening in the Myriad Gardens, kayaking on the Oklahoma River and cycling in downtown Oklahoma City. The students ride to places like the Memorial Museum and to various murals and sculptures in the downtown neighborhood. The outdoor lessons give these kids a chance to have physical education, art and history lessons all in one.

S OM E LIKE IT HOT CUSTOM SAUNA IN CUSTOM HOME BEATS THE WINTER CHILL WHEN JOSH LEWIS OF EDMOND WAS DESIGNING HIS NEW CUSTOM-BUILT, ULTRA-MODERN HOME AT OAKTREE IN EDMOND WITH MATTESON CUSTOM HOMES, HE WANTED ONE ADDITION THAT WAS UNIQUE. Josh, who works out at least five times a week, loved the sensation of sitting in a sauna after a big workout but hated the soggy drive home afterward. "Most gyms have saunas, and I hated driving home after sitting in the sauna, and I thought, 'I wish I could do this at home,'" he says. "I wanted to see if it could be done, and it could." Josh's modern, contemporary, four-bedroom, five-bathroom, 4,200-square-foot home was designed to include amenities that would keep him at home as a single father. Although the original floor plan did not include a sauna, he found a way to make it happen. "We have done two saunas in eight or nine years," says Amy Matteson of Matteson Custom Homes. "It's pretty unique. I think you'll see more incorporated into the homes now, though. Spaces like saunas and home gyms are becoming more popular." Josh's 10-by-5-foot sauna space is attached to his master bathroom, giving easy access to the shower. Decked out in red cedar that withstands heat and moisture, the sauna also reaches temperatures of 220 degrees, a jump from the usual 180 degrees. "Yeah, it's pretty hot. You don't last that long in that temperature," Josh says. "Saunas are good for your overall health and fitness. Just 10 minutes four times a week can take years off. I'm in the sauna more than that, though." In addition to the hot room, the 2018 home also incorporates a raised office in the back of the house that overlooks the pool. The sauna itself is an extension of the shower, giving Josh the ability to walk straight from sauna to shower. And although it’s an added expenditure, once constructed, a sauna adds value to the home, requires very little upkeep and can provide many health benefits. "My home was on the Parade of Homes, and the sauna really had a wow factor," Josh says. "I think having a sauna in the house is unheard of in this part of the country." 12

Automation, Technology, Distracted Driving: Three Changing Trends for 2019 SHELTON INSURANCE EXPLAINS HOW NEW TRENDS AFFECT AUTO INSURANCE RATES ARTICLE HEIDE BRANDES PHOTOGRAPHY CINDY RITCHIE
TECHNOLOGY IS EVER-EVOLVING, AND THE TECHNOLOGY THAT AFFECTS AUTO INSURANCE IS NO DIFFERENT. Win Shelton, owner/agent of Shelton Insurance and Financial Services, says three big trends to watch in 2019 include the push for more face-to-face interaction with your agent, how data mining affects your rates and continued technology to reduce distracted driving. In a world where a person can do everything over the internet or through an app, having real-life interaction with your agent will become more important, he says. "You have different segments of customers. Some want to have face-to-face meetings, and some don't want to talk to a person at all and want to do everything over the internet," Win says. "We try to accommodate everyone on their preferences, but the unfortunate thing is that people who don't want to deal with a real person are sometimes not as well-versed on insurance as they want to be." When Win calls a customer to go over their policy annually, he does face hesitation. 16

"We have seen a big increase in accidents caused by distracted driving, and so have auto manufacturers," Win says. "Car manufacturers are putting software in cars now that can prevent cell phone use while driving or give you the option to turn cells on and off. That should have an impact." Marjorie Houseman takes advantage of the gym at Threshold.

Angel Aston and Deidra Goff do a sandbag workout. Threshold Yoga instructor Kat Dinh helps member Zach Thompson with stretching at her yoga classes held at the gym every week.
Marjorie Houseman, Kurt Vanderwater and Doug Puryea find a community at Threshold Climbing and Fitness.
“My 22-year-old son was the first to start, and he got me to be a ‘climber mom,’” she says. “I never thought of trying rock climbing on my own, even though I’m very active. It’s harder than I thought.” Deidra joined Threshold the second day it was open with her husband and family. “I was glad they had a workout room and a yoga studio and other classes so I would have something to do if I didn’t want to climb,” she says. “But I started climbing too. I feel as I get older, I become more anxious. Climbing pushes me past that anxiety, and I’ve learned to trust more.” Threshold Climbing and Fitness, located at 6024 Westlake Memorial Parkway, is Oklahoma City’s largest climbing, fitness and yoga facility. Threshold houses 20,000 square feet of climbing space, plus a dedicated fitness room, a yoga space, a Moon Board and a Valo Augmented Reality Climbing Projector. “We have more than 100 members who are 40-plus, and they make up a huge part of our core community. I would say that our older members are the ones that we see here using the facility more consistently than any other group,” says Liz Warren, operations and marketing manager. Doug Puryea 22

Maximize Your Life in 2019
2. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE! Because our bodies are made up of 70 per-
cent water—and our brain is 80 percent water— staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do right now to feel better. “When you don’t get enough water, it does affect your brain,” she says. “Water is pure and

so important to our bodies.” Start with a goal of drinking three glasses of water upon waking. Every time you pass a water fountain or sink, take a moment to drink some water, whether you’re thirsty or not.
LISA BINGENHEIMER HILL OF NORMAN WANTS 2019 TO BE THE YEAR THAT EVERYONE MAXIMIZES THEIR LIFE, THEIR HEALTH AND THEIR HAPPINESS. As an Isagenix
Water is one of the most important needs of the body. Try drinking three glasses of water when you first wake up to jump-start your health.
Independent Associate, Lisa also coaches lives through her Showing Up for Life Program, which is all about living the best life a person can. "We maximize a higher quality of life," she says. "Where are you now, and where do you want to be? There's so much more in the world than just weight loss. Do you feel energetic, alive, sexy and confident? We meet you where you are and help you live healthier and longer." Being happy and healthy isn't just about nutrition and being fit. Lisa shares her five top tips for ways you can start maximizing your life right now. For more information, contact Lisa at livright@ gmail.com, 405.458.0448 or at LisaHill.Isagenix.com.
1. GET NUTRITION “I begin with getting people on the nutrition that’s right for them. In today’s world, nutrition from food is never enough, so we must fortify and add to our diets,” she says. While Lisa sells the Isagenix system to help her clients reach their nutritional goals, simply eating more nutritional foods can help you feel more alert, energetic and healthy from the start. 32

Get moving every day. Simple habits like walking can help your body feel its best.
3. MOVE IT! “The body is meant to move,” Lisa says. “You don’t have to have a gym membership to work out; you just need to get moving. I tell people to aim for 10 pushups a day and 25 crunches. That’s not a lot, but it gets the body fired up. I love walking. Do something active every day.” Being active could be spending a few minutes walking around, doing jumping jacks in the morning, riding a bike or even walking the dog.
“There’s so much more in the world than just weight loss. Do you feel energetic, alive, sexy and confident? We meet you where you are and help you live healthier and longer.”
Make sure you're getting enough protein in your diet.
4. TRY PROTEIN PACING

a day, a week.”
Try something new this year like a cooking class or a new hobby. It's a great way to make new friends too. Stillness helps you recharge and slow down. Take time every day to relax and contemplate.
5. BE STILL Whether you call it meditation or relaxing, make time every day for stillness. “You need to give back to yourself. Take time to be still, whether that’s five minutes or 15 minutes,” Lisa says. “We need to slow down and reconnect with ourselves. We all have such busy lives, but taking a few minutes to be still and disconnect from the noise is so important. You can take a hot bath, get your nails done, walk in the woods or meditate on gratitude.” January 2019 | OKC Lifestyle

C hangi ng the Ste re oty p e of Agi ng OKC HEALTHY LIVING CENTERS CREATE VIBRANT ATMOSPHERE FOR OLDER ADULTS ARTICLE HEIDE BRANDES PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLY RICHELLE AT THE OKLAHOMA CITY HEALTHY LIVING CENTER AT 11501 N. Rockwell, members are whittling large pieces of wood in the corner of the lobby. In the group fitness room down the hall, ladies are swaying their hips as they learn to belly dance or are finding their zen in downward facing dog poses in yoga classes. A fierce basketball game is underway in the gym, and in other rooms, men and women alike are painting, working on pottery, using leatherworking tools or rehearsing for a play. The walking group is lacing up their sneakers while music plays in the line dancing class. Welcome to the new face of aging. Long gone are the days of just bingo and bridge; today's senior citizens are more active than ever, and the new Healthy Living Center OKC, funded through the city's MAPS 3 tax initiative, is changing the stereotypes of what being older is. “This is adult wellness center for adults age 50 and older. We offer a variety of opportunities for engagement, whether that's through physical activity, our arts and other creative forms of expression or through just social connectedness in general,” says Claire DowersNichols, executive director. “One of the important components of what we do is provide a forum for people to connect with one another. We have everything from group fitness classes to opportunities to work with personal trainers. We have nine different personal trainers that work out of here, a full aquatics classes, art classes, drama classes.” 36
OKC Lifestyle | January 2019
The center is also home to interest groups like birdwatchers, walkers, jewelry designers and book clubs. “I hear stories all the time like, ‘My son made me join this after my wife died because he was afraid of me being alone, and this place has saved my life.’ I've heard one member say that she was thinking of checking out but now she comes here every day and sells her art online,” Claire says. “We have seen people walk in the door in survival mode, and after being here awhile, they're really thriving and discovering they can learn new things.”
“ We h a ve s e e n people walk in the door i n s u r v i va l mode, and after being here awhile, t h ey ’ r e r e a l l y thriving and d i s c ove r i n g t h ey c a n l e a r n n e w t h i n g s .”
When the center opened in March 2017, it had a goal to have 2,000 members in two years. By the end of the year, membership hit 4,000 and now sits at 5,500. The center is so popular that the Oklahoma City Council is considering expansion plans for the 42,000-square-foot facility already. A second MAPS 3 Healthy Living Center opened in May in Capitol Hill, and two more are in the works. “We’ve added an average of 200 members a month so far this year,” Claire says.
“I have said for a long time we have to get beyond bingo. Older adults want new, exciting things because they are not slowing down. They're not stopping.” Day passes and tours of Healthy Living OKC are offered to people considering joining. “I think it's an exciting time to be in this field because aging is changing. I think the MAPS 3 centers have a great opportunity to redefine how aging looks, how services are offered, how older adults are reached and how to break that stereotype. It’s impressive when we have 90-year-old bodybuilders that show up in the mornings and pump more weights than I weigh," Claire says. After the first free visit, members can join for either $10 a day or $30 for a monthly pass with no contract. Sliding fees are available as well, and some insurance plans cover part of the fee. For more information on membership or services, call 405.773.6910 or visit HealthyLivingOKC.com.
