WE TOLD YOU YOUR TIME WOULD COME, DIDN’T WE, GUYS? Since the May issue was all about the ladies, we thought it was only fair the June issue of OKC Lifestyle be dedicated to the gents of our community. While we will celebrate the dads in our lives on Father’s Day, June 17, you don’t have to be a father to find something you’ll enjoy in these pages.  Now that you’ve met the female movers and shakers of the community, we’ll introduce you to some influential men in this month’s feature. Learn about what makes them unique and how they’re impacting the community. If you haven’t already, you’ll probably run into one—or several—of them out on the town! Preparing for a night out with the guys? We’ll show you the perfect places in the community to grab a drink, watch the big game or just catch up with pals. We also introduce you to a local duo who share their favorite things with us. Finally, we put a spotlight on men’s health. It’s been months since many of us made New

Thin Blue Line Run/Race On a recent cold Saturday, hundreds of men, women and children braved the elements to raise money for C.O.P.S. (Concerns Of Police Survivors), an organization that helps support families of fallen police officers in Oklahoma. The race was held at Boomer Lake in Stillwater. Thank you to all who participated for making this a great event in spite of the cool temperatures.

02.

Bad Axe Throwing is a great place for guys to meet up and hang out because throwing axes at a target is naturally a social sport. “It’s similar to bowling and darts but with more adrenaline! It’s active without being over the top or having any previous athletic ability,” Melanie St-Amour, marketing and development coordinator, says. “It’s an activity that’s social, casual and active all at the same time. It’s in a chill environment that’s not in a bar setting. A perfect day for a group of guys at Bad Axe Throwing would be to come in for a private group booking event. One of our professionally trained ax throwing coaches will show you how to throw axes, host games and run a roundrobin tournament to crown the ultimate ax throwing champion!”

03.

Topgolf is a great place to meet up and hang out with its full-service restaurant and bars in

the 100-plus climate-controlled hitting bays. From the obvious choice of golf to pool tables, Topgolf also offers live entertainment throughout the summer.  Private event spacing is available for groups starting as low as 12 guests, and Topgolf offers private and group lessons for all ages. “A perfect day at Topgolf for a group of guys would be coming out and grabbing a drink,

“We have roughly 70 whiskeys on our shelves and craft beers on

some of our mouthwatering food, watching their

A SERENE SANCTUARY NEW HOME TIES TRADITIONAL WITH CONTEMPORARY FOR SOOTHING DESIGN ARTICLE HEIDE BRANDES

W

HEN DON AND ROBYN SHANDY MOVED TO THEIR NEW HOME IN FAIRVIEW FARMS IN NORTH OKLAHOMA CITY, THEY WANTED A SPACE THAT NOT ONLY COMBINED THEIR LOVE OF TRADITIONAL PIECES WITH A FRESH, CONTEMPORARY FEEL BUT A HOME THAT WAS SOOTHING AND RELAXING AS WELL. With vaulted and cathedral ceilings, wood beams and

muted creamy color palette, the Shandy home features

four bedrooms, 4 1/2 baths, two living areas, a game and entertainment room, and a roomy kitchen in the 4,900-square-foot space. “I loved the idea of mixing traditional pieces with newer pieces,”

Robyn says. “There are some things you love and want to keep, so it makes a nice mix when you can use those pieces.” The home, designed by Brent Gibson, features a theme of arched entryways and an arched iron door from Monte Cristo Ironworks. The coffee wood floors are complemented by the pale Maison Blanche paint color on the walls in the main living area. The dark wood beams along the 22-foot cathedral ceiling tie the colors together in a majestic way. “I really love the arches, and I fell in love with the 10-foot iron door,” Robyn says. Interior designers Linda Quigley of L & L Designs and David Dean from Mathis Brothers lent their expertise for items to tie the entire design of the home together, including the Savoy House chandelier, the distressed leather chairs from Mr. Roberts in Norman in the office and the Mathis Brothers Bernhardt desk in the office. The kitchen space feature Taj Mahal quartz countertops, installed by Elegance in Stone, and a custom color on the cabinetry called “Shandy White,” after the homeowners. The lighting fixtures above the kitchen island from Cyan gives the room a rustic, modern feel. “The lights in the second room were from Restoration Hardware,” Robyn adds. Robyn says the master bedroom and master bath are among her favorite rooms in the home. The master bath features breccia marble, a deep Jacuzzi tub and a stone walk-in shower, while the master bedroom is highlighted by the heirloom Schonbeck chandelier the family brought with them. “We are empty-nesters now, so we wanted a place that was serene and relaxing,” Robyn says. “The colors and the design really show that.” 32

PARTING THOUGHTS

Wine Delight CUSTOM-DESIGNED WINE ROOM IS A CONNOISSEUR'S DREAM... AND A SAFE ROOM, TOO! DANNY AND JEANNIE STITH OF OKLAHOMA CITY KNOW WINE. They love wine. With a collection just shy of 2,000 bottles, the Stiths wanted a unique space that could not only highlight their wine collection but protect it as well. The result is an old-world space constructed beautifully to be not only a striking and elegant wine storage room but also a room that serves as a weather-safe room. Brent Cornman of Brent Cornman Construction was originally doing a master bath remodel in the home with the Stiths approached him about the wine room. The wine room was actually part of a bigger project that included a remodeled living room space and a new backyard patio. With thousands of dollars of wine inventory, the idea was attractive to Jeannie and Danny. "The idea for a wine cellar started years ago," Danny says. "My wife wanted to collect wines, and at some point, you buy so many bottles you need a proper wine cellar. Brent pushed me over the top when he said it could be a FEMA-rated storm shelter too." The 16-by-16-foot space included concrete walls and a 1-foot thick ceiling, but also a Whisper Cool wine cooling system that keeps the room a perfect 54.8 degrees at all times. The actual build-out of the wine storage shelves was created by Coastal Custom Wine Cellars of San Diego, but Brent's crew assembled the shelving and matched the stain on the knotty pine back wall. The shelves crisscross to hold just under 2,000 bottles of wine in the collection. "We had a space left over in the corner, so we designed a kitchenette with a glass door for the wine glasses and a dishwasher drawer," Brent says, Monte Cristo Iron Works designed the door entrance and lantern outside the door, and the Old World Iron created the grape leaf accents. Midwest Cast Stone did the stone features in the wine room while Traditions in Edmond helped design the cabinets. "My wife loves wine, and this is her passion," Danny says. "Now we have a proper wine cellar where she can enjoy her hobby and I can too. It was the completion of a dream."
