ATTORNEY DONNA JACKSON GIVES PEACE OF MIND THROUGH ESTATE PLANNING

WHEN IS IT TOO YOUNG TO START CONSIDERING YOUR ESTATE, YOUR POWERS OF ATTORNEY AND PLANNING FOR DEATH OR DISABILITY? For Oklahoma City attorney Donna Jackson, as soon as a child turns 18, those decisions should be put in place. She knows no one wants to consider the worst that could happen, but not having the future planned could result in more painful results, like probate, fights, court battles and more. From her earliest childhood, Jackson knew she wanted to help in estate planning and elder law. She remembers sitting with her grandparents' living room listening to them and their friends complain about how the government would take all the money when they died. "That just didn't make sense to me," she says. "I always wanted to be an attorney." However, while studying pre-law at Oklahoma State University, Jackson instead earned her masters in accounting and worked as a CPA for years before going back to earn her law degree. 12

"To me, it's always been about helping people and about taking care of people," she says. "At the time, there was a new field called 'elder law.' I earned my Master of Law in elder law, but what I do isn't just for the elderly. It's about planning your future and giving peace of mind. Peace and empowerment is what I bring to peopleâ€”a way for them to retain control." Even adults as young as 18 should have a written and legal plan in place to control what happens should the unthinkable happen, she says. As couples marry and have children in their 20s and 30s, they should also consider what might happen to their estate or their children should they pass away unexpectedly or suffer another life-altering event. "So many people in that age group have nothing in place that says who will take care of the kids or how to support the kids in case something happens," she says. "Everyone should have an advanced directive, a living will and people in place who are the health care power of attorney and financial power of attorney. If you want to maintain control after something happens and have peace, you should plan ahead and get those documents in order." Jackson, who has practiced law in Oklahoma City since 1988, specializes in estate planning, probate, elder law and taxes. She knows that estate planning can be difficult, but said instead of being depressing, it actually grants a level of peace. "Who wants to think about death, dying or getting sick? No one, but you actually feel relieved and empowered when you know you and your loved ones will be taken care of in the manner you want," she says. "We really need to reach the younger generation. Everyone needs to plan for contingencies." And while many fear that estate planning takes too much time or money to arrange, Jackson says that fear is unfounded. "Yes, it takes a little effort and money, but you want to make it a priority," Jackson says. "We can do it in two meetings sometimes. That's what I do. I take care of people, and knowing that someone is taking care of them gives people peace of mind." For more information, contact Donna J. OKLAHOMA FOOD COOPERATIVE IS HELPING FARMERS AND ARTISANS DISTRIBUTE THEIR PRODUCTS

ONCE A MONTH, AND NOW ONCE A WEEK, LOADS OF PRODUCE, MEAT AND OTHER FARM PRODUCTS ROLL IN THE OKLAHOMA FOOD COOPERATIVE IN BUSHELS OF DEEP GREENS, REDS, YELLOWS AND MORE. Locally grown or locally raised and produced food fills the warehouse space at 311 S. Klein in Oklahoma City before being moved to various distribution points throughout the state—all destined for family dinner tables throughout Oklahoma. At the distribution points, families pick up their order of fresh food. With more than 2,500 Oklahoma-grown or produced items, shoppers have a cornucopia to choose from. Every item ordered and purchased comes from an Oklahoman who made it. “It’s the way it used to be when we relied on family farms for our food,” Adam Price, general manager of the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, says. “We offer anything you can find in any supermarket, but ours are made, raised or grown in Oklahoma by local farms.” In January, the co-op unveiled a new weekly ordering system in which members can order items starting at noon on Mondays until noon on Tuesdays with pickup on Saturdays. “We still operate as a grassroots organization, but what this means is that you can get the freshest items while supporting local businesses and the local economy,” Adam says. A SEED OF AN IDEA The Oklahoma Food Co-op began out of necessity in 2003. Local farmers and farming advocates needed a better distribution system to get their homegrown items to the public. “Distribution was one of the things not being addressed,” Adam says. “Farmers who sold food locally had either little farmers markets or a hard time getting their produce out there. Bob Waldrup, a local advocate, decided he wanted to source all of his food from local farmers, and he’s the one who brought all the farmers and ranchers together to develop this.” Farmers and artisans list their products for sale. Members who pay a one-time fee of $51.75 can log in, shop and place orders any time during the ordering period. “You can order herbs, dairy, meat, specialty meats, produce, baked goods, grains, bath and body products, jewelry ... anything that is made by local farmers and producers is available,” Adam says. “We have 15 beef producers, some pork producers, pasture chickens, local tilapia … you name it.” CONTINUED >

I have a child who would not eat a fresh tomato out of the garden because he thought it was rotten. He was used to all those cardboard tomatoes at the store. So, I put my house on the market and bought a farm in 2011.” Dustin can sell his products year-round through the organization.

“I like being part of a larger group because you have selling power,” he says. “Also, we can get our food all over the state. Think about the food deserts we have here. We are able to reach those places with fresh, locally produced items.” Today, the co-op has thousands of members, but 300 to 400 who order on a regular basis. For Adam, the movement is a true antithesis of big industrial agriculture that cuts out the small family farm. “The family farmer is a dying breed,” he says. “When you purchase your food from a local farmer, you know exactly who you’re buying from and how it was produced. They also create a better-quality product that is healthier for you and just tastes better.”

KERRI BENN, OF OKLAHOMA CITY, HAS A THING ABOUT DOORS. A nature lover and traveler, she also has a thing about rustic beauty and bringing in the elements of nature into her home. So when she used John Matteson Custom Homes to build her new house, she knew the design would be built around those special items she loved. Using reclaimed wood and repurposed items, the new home incorporated items that normally would be thrown away and used them as key elements. Not only is the home beautifully unique, it's eco-friendly. "We have traveled a lot, and we enjoy the outdoors. We like old things and repurposed items, so we purchased an old barn and

In her former home, Kerri loved the old antique green door that her family and friends walked through daily. "We spent a lot of time to find unique doors, and we knew it would be hard for the builders to work that into the design, but they did," Kerri says.Â 28

The home features a walk-out basement and play area, four bedrooms, two indoor/outdoor rooms, a memorabilia room, two main living areas and a pool house. Kerri didn't want a formal dining room and instead incorporated a dining table and couch from Urban Farmhouse in one of the indoor/outdoor rooms. She used accessories like mirrors and high-wing back chairs from Reclaimed Warehouse to add touches of nostalgia.

"We love to bring the outdoors in, and we love the vintage look of things that have been around for awhile," Kerri says. "We had items we found and held onto that we wanted to use in the home." Because the Benns often host guests and church gatherings at their home, they wanted a place where people could gather, talk and laugh. The basement area is designed for her teenage children to use as well with five televisions, a pool table, dart boards, pingpong tables and a sports bar. "We aren't super formal people, and our home is just perfect for us," Kerri says. "We honor God with this house." The Benn home and John Matteson Custom Homes were featured on the show "Builders International," which aired earlier this year.

"In addition to the service and installation, we now have people who are employed as attendants who sell the water," Matt says. "They buy it wholesale and sell it retail, but at a fixed price set by us and the local government. We make sure there will be no 'water mafia' situation.'" When completed, the piped water system would service a quarter of a million people in Wassa, another quarter of a million in Rwanda and 150,000 in Sierra Leone. "This changes everything for them. Instead of standing in line for hours after walking for miles, they can easily fill up their water containers with clean, chlorinated water," Matt says. "The health impact will be tremendous. All this is done out of our offices at 10th and Villa here in Oklahoma City. We work with 400 different African entrepreneurs with our 20-person team in the city."
