A Time to Be Thankful

NOVEMBER 2017 PUBLISHER

T

hankful: it’s a word that gets tossed around a lot this time of year as November arrives and 2017 begins to draw to a close. And although it typically marks the winding down of the year, November is also a season of beginnings. This month begins the season of giving and the season of receiving. It begins the season of family gatherings and time spent with friends. It’s the month of Thanksgiving Day parades, Black Friday shopping, mom’s traditional holiday dinners and naps on the couch when you’ve had too much turkey ... or casserole ... or pie …

But, perhaps most importantly, it’s the beginning of a season of reflection and gratefulness. While we’re incredibly thankful for all of the food (who isn’t thankful for the person who came up with pie?), wine and family time November brings—food and wine is this month’s theme, after all—here at OKC Lifestyle, we’re truly thankful for you. When we fill this magazine each month with local restaurants, locally-owned businesses and inspiring members of the OKC community, it’s because we’re thankful for everything the place we call home has to offer, and for you—the readers and members of this community—who continue to inspire us to make every issue of this publication special. Thank you for taking the time to join us as we strive to connect you with your community through meaningful words and beautiful photographs. And to you, our readers, take some time to think about what you’re thankful for this November. May you find gratitude in the little things, and may the list of what you’re thankful for go on forever.

OKLAHOMA CITY HIRES NEW FIRE CHIEF City Manager Jim Couch announced the selection of Richard A. Kelley as Oklahoma City’s next fire chief. Chief Kelley, currently the deputy chief of operations, succeeds former Fire Chief Keith Bryant, who recently became the U.S. fire administrator with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Chief Kelley spent a year with the Will Rogers World Airport Fire Department before joining the city’s fire department 26 years ago. He has spent much of his career focusing on rescue programs and special operations, building the city’s Urban Search and Rescue program in 2004. He’s fought countless fires over the course of his career and has been involved with

tornado response, swift-water rescues and various other emergencies. “I’ve been truly blessed to earn this opportunity, and I’m excited for the challenge and to continue working with my friends and colleagues in the fire department,” Kelley says. “I’m fortunate to work in a community that understands the value of public safety services. Leading the fire department is an honor that I accept with humility and enthusiasm.” Chief Kelley will oversee 990 positions in the department (958 uniform and 32 civilian positions) in three divisions: operational services, fire prevention services and support services. Kelley is a graduate of Moore High School and has an associate’s degree from Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City (OSU-OKC) in municipal fire protection. He completed the Oklahoma Executive Fire Officer Leadership Program in 2015 and is currently attending OSU-OKC to earn a bachelor’s degree in emergency responder administration. Along with his wife, Elizabeth, Kelley’s household includes daughters Mikayla, Johnna and Addison, and step-children Emily and Nick.

RIBBON CUT ON NEW MUNICIPAL COURT BUILDING Mayor Mick Cornett and other city leaders cut the ribbon on the new Municipal Court building, unveiling a more modern building that makes it more convenient for residents to conduct court business. The new court building, 701 Couch Drive, is on the northwest corner of the historic Civic Center district on the opposite side of the new Police Department headquarters, which opened last year. The old police headquarters and court building are in 8

between the new buildings, and will eventually be transformed into a parking plaza.

Home & Auto go together. Like you & a good neighbor.

The new court building’s design allows residents to use the customer service windows without first going through a security screening, unlike the old building. The 65,000-square-foot building is almost twice the size of the old one and combines traditional design influences with modern and efficient features. Up to 140,000 hearings are heard every year in the Municipal Court, which has six courtrooms finished with decorative wood and natural stone. A monumental staircase and granite benches greet visitors in the lobby and atrium, which takes advantage of natural light. The $22.8 million building was designed by ADG and built by CMSWillowbrook.

21C MUSEUM HOTEL OKLAHOMA CITY FINALIST IN SURFACE MAGAZINE TRAVEL AWARDS Among the year’s best spaces, products and innovators in the worlds of travel and design, 21c Museum Hotel Oklahoma City has been named as a finalist in the inaugural Surface Travel Awards. The Surface Travel Awards is a tribute to the best and most thoughtfully conceived spaces and products, as well as architects, designers and innovators who inspire, empower and connect travelers. Among seven esteemed hotels ranging in location from London to New York, 21c Oklahoma City is a finalist in the large hotel category. Originally built in 1916 as a Ford Motor Company assembly plant, the design of 21c Oklahoma City was led by New York-based architects Deborah Berke Partners, who sought to create a contemporary interpretation of the building’s industrial heritage. Deborah Berke Partners has also been named as a finalist in the travel designer of the year category.

Parting Thoughts

CHANGING COMMUNITIES ONE PATIENT AT A TIME ARTICLE LANA WILKENS | PHOTOGRAPHY CINDY RITCHIE

Goodbyes, payment, scheduling and it's over. Sound familiar? Dr. Castel Santana, M.D., at MorFit Medical, boldly challenges the corporate model that says success equals more patients in less time. He says much of his philosophy for medicine rests on the following statement, "A good physician is a good listener." Previously, he practiced in a local hospital and found it limited his ability to fully care for patients. Now, about a year and half later, Santana runs a new, integrative, wellness center located in Edmond called MorFit Medical. Firmly resting on the 5 Pillars of Health, MorFit offers holistic and individualized patient care for a variety of conditions including PTSD, allergies, lifestyle changes, hormone-replacement therapy and chronic illness. The 5 Pillars of Health are: • Medical Wellness • Physical Wellness • Mental Wellness • Spiritual Wellness and • Aesthetic Wellness Combining the best of Eastern and Western medicine, each pillar supports a person's overall health. After an initial consultation, Santana and his staff walk alongside patients, facing issues together. His passion for the health of his patients is undeniably contagious. MorFit Medical achieves harmony between "being a minimalist in medicine and a realist." Santana says, "medications are there for a reason and if you need it, then you need it. But, I always try to look and see if there is an alternative." And he doesn't just coach his patients to live a clean-eating and fit lifestyle while he eats a bacon cheeseburger! He practices what he preaches, so his wife Courtney and son Lucca partner in this lifestyle at home. A beautiful symmetry exists across his lifestyle choices in both the public and private sphere. MorFit's vision to serve the metro stretches beyond individual health. Santana believes that changing entire communities is the goal. "Healthy communities are happy and prosperous," he says. Resources such as monthly educational events, partnerships with local gyms and a support base to help clients gain motivation all tie together at MorFit Medical. To take steps toward greater overall health visit their office at 2908 Via Esperanza Edmond, OK 73013 or online at MorFitMedical.com. Santana is positively changing the definition of a physician.
