LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome to the Style Issue: Fashion, Film, and Furballs Dear Readers, Welcome to our annual Style Issue! Style isn’t just about what we wear; it’s about how we live, how we express ourselves, and how we lift up the community around us. This month, we are bursting at the seams with incredible local stories that celebrate the vibrant fabric of Ogden City. First, we are thrilled to feature Ogden City Lifestyle’s very own Kelley Lord! Kelley was recently nominated for a prestigious Best Actress Award for her phenomenal film, Travel Vloggers—a brilliant project she not only starred in but also directed and produced. Talk about a powerhouse! True style also means having a big heart. In this month’s Kindness Chronicles, we spotlight the incredible team at Seager Memorial Clinic. This vital local facility ensures that our non-insured and under-insured neighbors receive compassionate, high-quality healthcare. They remind us that kindness never goes out of style. For our signature style segment, we are highlighting three exceptional local businesses that keep our community looking and feeling its best: • Sparkles and Gowns: Your ultimate destination for stunning wedding dresses and a magical experience finding "the one" for your special day. • Pieces Furniture & Design: A curated look at the trendiest, most stylish furniture pieces to transform your house into a home. • Rockwood Optometry: Proving that function meets fashion by helping you find the most chic, stylish eyeglasses to sharpen your vision. Finally, turn your attention to our local pet highlight! Joining me in the photo this month is the absolutely wonderful Thickums McGee. She is a beautiful, deeply loving, and sweet dog who is currently searching for her perfect furever home. Could it be yours? Thank you for allowing us into your homes and hearts. We hope this issue inspires you to live beautifully, give generously, and shop locally. Happy reading,

SEAGER MEMORIAL CLINIC BRINGS HEALTHCARE TO NEIGHBORS IN NEED.

"It doesn’t matter who you are. Everyone deserves respect," says longtime volunteer Dawn Lowery, PA-C. For nearly four decades, Seager Memorial Clinic has served as a bridge between those in need and the healthcare they deserve. Established in 1988, the nonprofit began with one goal: to provide medical care to underinsured adults, regardless of their circumstances. For 37 years, Seager Memorial Clinic served the community from its original home in the basement of the Ogden Rescue Mission. In 2025, the clinic entered a new chapter with the opening of the Karl & Erika Michel Center, creating more space for volunteer healthcare professionals to continue serving hundreds of patients. “You don't need an ID. You don’t need paperwork,” says longtime volunteer Dawn Lowery, PA-C. “It doesn’t matter who you are. Everyone deserves respect.”

Volunteer pharmacists, Terrie Koehler and Bob Pump

The clinic provides a wide range of services, including primary care, dental care, mental health support, diabetic care, and free prescription medications. Patients can also access women’s health resources, laboratory testing, and referrals through partnerships with local hospitals. Powered by a dedicated network of volunteers, the clinic is a place where compassion meets action. Healthcare professionals donate their time and expertise, creating an environment where patients feel seen, supported, and valued. Every day, Seager Memorial Clinic reminds the community that healthcare is about restoring hope and ensuring no one is turned away because of their financial circumstances. With generosity extending beyond the clinic’s walls, the clinic’s next big event is a Free Health Screening Day on September 19 at Ogden-Weber Technical College. The event will provide free health screenings, dental cleanings, laboratory testing, immunizations, women’s health services, and access to a mobile mammography unit. More information can be found on page 3. Thanks to the generosity of volunteers, healthcare professionals, and donors, Seager Memorial Clinic’s legacy of compassion continues to grow— one patient at a time. ACTING IN St y l e

ARTICLE BY EVANA MAURIZ

DRESS FOR THE ROLE YOU WANT

To sit with Lord is to understand the joy of "dopamine dressing." Her wardrobe is a collection of vibrant colors and playful pieces that bring her joy. For the premiere of A Little Jaded, Lord arrived with unique flair. She wore a simple white dress that became a literal canvas, reflecting her childlike imagination and creative freedom—symbolic of the heart of the film. But embracing fashion as self-expression wasn't always easy. For years, Lord admits she dressed to make other people comfortable instead of expressing who she truly was.

BECOMING THE CHARACTER

AWA RD -W I N N I NG ACTRESS A N D FI LM M A K ER K EL L E Y LO R D B EL I E V ES T H E F I R ST R O L E Y O U ' L L E V E R P L A Y I S Y O U R S E L F.

20

M UST SE E | STYL E + BEAU T Y

Lord's appreciation for the transformative power of wardrobe was forged in the fast-paced world of New York's entertainment industry. During her years doing background work on hit productions like You, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Severance, and SNL, she quickly discovered that wardrobe often determined the story you were there to tell. On her very first day working on You, a wardrobe mix-up transformed her from an upscale party guest into a background hippie. It was a simple costume

change, but it revealed just how quickly appearance could redefine a character. For years, she found herself repeatedly cast as the quintessential party girl or sorority sister, navigating the limiting boxes the industry so easily draws around young actresses. Refusing to let appearance define her range, Lord sought something deeper. She enrolled at the historic HB Studio in Greenwich Village in New York. She immersed herself in theater, classical training, and the creative process. When she received a last-minute phone call asking her to replace a missing actress on opening night of a play, she agreed. With only a few hours to prepare, she stepped onstage carrying the script disguised as a sketchbook and pretended to paint while reading her lines. The gamble paid off. The production team expanded her role and eventually wrote an entire spinoff production centered around her character—a 1940s Disney animator. Lord approaches characters much the same way she approaches fashion—trying them on, discovering how they fit, and allowing each one to reveal a different side of herself. Her versatility has carried her to a multitude of roles, from fierce werewolves in gritty horror films to theater productions, lighthearted sketch comedy, and just about everything in between. She's been a nurse, a lawyer, a rockstar, a celebrity, a Space Queen, a cheating fiancée, an abuse survivor, and even a lifeless body on an investigative crime series. Along the way, she's portrayed characters from nearly every decade since the 1940s and occasionally steps in as a stand-in for A-list actors—a unique opportunity to experience their roles from the inside out. Yet beneath the excitement of every new role was a growing desire for something deeper. Kelley wanted to spend months—not hours—bringing a character to life, allowing them to change as she changed. It was the kind of story she could no longer wait for someone else to write. CONTINUED >

“YOU HAVE TO REALLY ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF IN THIS WORLD. No one just becomes a movie star... YOU START DRESSING LIKE A MOVIE STAR.” 22

M UST SE E | STYL E + BEAU T Y

CREATING YOUR OWN OPPORTUNITIES

Rather than waiting for someone else to hand her the next opportunity, she reclaimed her narrative. Kelley put that mindset into practice after discovering that others had overlooked her substantial contributions to a documentary project. Instead of accepting the oversight, she advocated for herself and ultimately earned the Emmy recognition she deserved. When early digital platforms hesitated to put her on camera, she partnered with a fellow comedian to launch a YouTube channel, producing her own work until the industry had no choice but to notice. "You have to really advocate for yourself in this world," Lord says. "No one just becomes a movie star. You start dressing like a movie star." That same determination brought her to Utah, where she now writes, produces, and stars in her own independent films. Her newest film, Travel Vloggers, is equal parts thriller, comedy, and love letter to Ogden Valley—a place that became the backdrop for her own unexpected transformation. Inspired by her fish-out-of-water journey from Manhattan to the mountains, the film celebrates the remarkable women who welcomed her into their wilderness and became part of her story.

LIFE IS A Choose Your Own Adventure —KELLEY LORD BECOMING YOURSELF

Whether she's scouting mountain locations, polishing a screenplay, directing actors, or simply tying on another colorful bandana before heading out the door, Kelley Lord approaches life the same way she approaches every role—with intention. She's learned that identity isn't something handed to you. "Life is a chooseyour-own-adventure," explains Lord. Sometimes, becoming the person you're meant to be begins by dressing as though you've already arrived. "It feels really good to step into this character," she says with a smile. "Because this is me." Kelley Lord’s creative journey is far from over. Follow her on Instagram at @KelleyLord for upcoming film projects, networking events, and collaborations— and see how she helps businesses and nonprofits shine through storytelling at @LordKnowsMedia.

Wear Colors That Truly

LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life. KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.

CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.

THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cool-toned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.

BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!

PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly— wear what makes you feel beautiful.

THE ONE CURATED GOWNS FOR EVERY STYLE OF BRIDE ARTICLE BY KELLEY LORD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SPARKLES & GOWNS

26

I NSP IR E D BY | SHO P P I NG

THE GLAMOURIST

Whether your vibe is sultry glam, clean contemporary, or full-on princess energy, these show-stopping gowns were made to leave a lasting impression.

Before you see anything at Sparkle and Gowns, you see the sparkle. When owner Janelle opened the door, the first thing that caught my eye was her glittering boots. We sat down to chat about brides, and that’s when I noticed the sparkle in her eyes, too. Nicknamed “Sparkles” by friends and family, Janelle drew inspiration from the nickname when naming her boutique and from the feeling she hopes every bride experiences on her wedding day. Finding a wedding dress can feel overwhelming. Pinterest boards, trends, opinions, and endless options can make it hard to know where to start. According to Janelle, the best place to begin is with your personality. After helping countless brides find their dream dress, Janelle recently celebrated a wedding of her own. You might assume someone who spends every day surrounded by gowns would know exactly what she wanted. After all, she sees every trend, every silhouette, and every new shipment that arrives at the boutique. But her experience turned out to be surprisingly similar to that of many of her brides. She spent time browsing the racks, considering different styles, and imagining how each dress might feel on her wedding day. In the end, the dress she chose wasn’t the most expensive, the trendiest, or the one she expected to fall in love with. CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / O G D E N

THE DREAMER It was simply the one that felt the most like her. And, of course, it was the most sparkly dress imaginable! That sentiment seemed to be at the heart of everything Janelle shared. While bridal fashion changes from season to season, confidence never goes out of style. The dresses may be beautiful, but the goal isn’t to transform into someone else. It’s to feel like the best version of yourself. As a bride-to-be myself, the most comforting thing she said wasn’t about lace, silhouettes, or what happens to be trending this year. “There is so much pressure to look perfect, but the truth is, to your fiancé, you already are.” For anyone currently scrolling Pinterest boards, saving inspiration photos, or second-guessing every decision, those words feel like a welcome reminder. The perfect dress isn’t about perfection at all. Whether you’re edgy, whimsical, practical, princess, classic, or some combination of them all, the right dress is the one that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and unmistakably you. And maybe that’s the real sparkle behind Sparkle and Gowns. From dreamy billowy sleeves to classic strapless cuts and delicate botanical lace—discover the soft, effortless gown that brings your fairytale to life.

SEEING THE SCHOOL YEAR in Style

EXPERT ADVICE FROM DR. ROCKWOOD FROM ROCKWOOD OPTOMETRY ARTICLE BY EVANA MAURIZ

The back-to-school season offers the usual checklist: fresh supplies, new clothes, and fresh outfits. But there’s one important item that’s easy to overlook — your eyesight. When it comes to healthy vision, we turned to Dr. Rockwood of Rockwood Optometry, whose nearly 20 years of experience have made him a trusted resource for local families. Because the truth is, clear vision plays an important role in every stage of life. From young kids learning to read and teens competing in sports, to parents working long hours behind a computer and grandparents staying connected with loved ones. As children return to school, comprehensive eye exams can contribute to their success. Schools often do basic vision screenings, but don't catch every issue. One important milestone for kids is right before second grade. “This is when students transition from learning to read to reading to learn,” explains Rockwood. “As print gets smaller, vision problems can begin to impact education." Some vision problems can even be disguised as learning disabilities. By doing a comprehensive eye exam, you can find things that might otherwise be overlooked. And the best thing about glasses? They come in many unique styles!

Today’s eyewear is as much about personality as it is about practicality. Kids can choose from colorful frames, flexible materials, removable straps, and even glow-in-the-dark options. Once they find a pair they love, wearing glasses often becomes less of a necessity and more of an expression of who they are. For the teenage years, many student-athletes are choosing contact lenses as an option, giving more freedom on the stage or field. Rockwood recommends implementing effective hygiene habits and coming in for step-bystep guidance. Parents may also be interested in managing nearsightedness, or myopia, which has become increasingly common among children. With many kids spending more time on devices and doing extended close-up work, specialized contact lenses and eyeglasses can help slow the progression of myopia and support healthier vision as they grow. Back to school is usually all about the kids, but it’s also a great reminder for parents to take care of their vision as well. Whether you've been putting off your annual eye exam, noticing more eye strain after long workdays, experiencing trouble driving at night, or just thinking it is time for new frames, healthy eyesight is something that everyone can benefit from.

From first frames to family traditions, healthy vision helps us all experience life more clearly.
