August is all about two of life's greatest joys: children and pets.
Whether they have two legs or four, the stories in this month's issue celebrate the connections that bring companionship and purpose to our lives.
On our cover, we're highlighting Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a place unlike any other. Home to dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, parrots, pigs, and countless other animals, the sanctuary helps thousands of pets find loving homes.
Our Kindness Chronicles feature honors the life and legacy of Becky, whose work with Quality Youth Services helped support young people throughout our community. Through the words of her business partner and friend, we reflect on the impact she made and the lives she touched along the way.
You'll also meet the team at Youth Impact. A magical place where local youth are discovering new talents, building confidence, and finding support through programs ranging from guitar and mariachi music to welding, culinary arts, theater, and more!
And because no Children & Pets issue would be complete without an unforgettable animal story, we're introducing you to Trent—a 2,400-pound horse whose gentle personality has made him one of the most beloved members of the Country Weddings & Events family.
I hope this issue reminds you to appreciate the animals that make us smile, the mentors who help shape young lives, and the organizations working every day to strengthen our community.

A LETTER FROM Country Weddings & EVENTS
At 2,400 pounds, Trent is an impressive sight. But his calm demeanor and friendly spirit are what guests remember most.
Meet Trent, the gentle giant who helps make weddings magical.
ARTICLE BY TANA GOOCH
My name is Tana. Here is a bit more about myself, my venue, and my horse, Trent.
I am the owner of Country Weddings and Events in Hooper, Utah, located on our historic family property, which was purchased in the late 1800s. I’d like to introduce you to my friend Trent, an 18.3-hand Percheron weighing 2,400 pounds. The Percheron breed originates from the former Perche Province in western France. We purchased Trent from Young Living, where he was part of their World Champion six-hitch team. He is a proud horse who loves meeting people and plays a central role at our venue by pulling our wedding carriage and offering guests rides with views of our island, fountains, and local wildlife.
Our property is a versatile, rustic, and elegant wedding venue, as well as a working family farm where we raise hay for our Wagyu cattle and care for various farm animals. Bordering a bird refuge, the land is also home to diverse wildlife, including Canadian geese, blue herons, and sandhill cranes. My son, Frank, drives the carriage and manages the property full-time.
Our venue’s unique history began when a horse broke our old bridge. After we rebuilt it, someone asked to be married there. Since then, we have transformed our working barn into a reception hall and the arena into a guest parking lot. Our entire team goes above and beyond to ensure every couple enjoys a stressfree experience.

A YOUNG ATHLETE'S JOURNEY TO PURSUE A DREAM IN BASKETBALL
ARTICLE BY GRACIE MALONEY-HOLLAND
I’m from Bath, England, where I grew up in a close-knit community. I discovered basketball at 8 while briefly living in New York and immediately fell in love. From then on, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue.
At 16, I moved back to the United States alone to pursue my dream of playing college basketball. The biggest challenge was being away from my family and learning how to live independently. While it’s been a huge adjustment, it’s helped me grow quickly.
My host family has been incredible. From day one, they made me feel welcome and gave me a home away from home. They have supported me through everything and truly feel like family. Some of my favorite memories with them include going to Hawaii and celebrating our state championship. Those experiences are memories I will always cherish.
Living abroad has helped me become more confident and independent. I have learned to handle challenges and navigate life without having my family nearby. I’m especially proud of winning a basketball state championship at Layton Christian Academy and making lifelong friendships that feel more like family.
Receiving a scholarship would mean everything to me. It’s been my goal long before moving to America. This experience has taught me resilience, independence, and the importance of building meaningful connections. If I could give one piece of advice to another considering this journey, it would be to be confident, make connections, try new things, learn from every experience, and enjoy every moment.
Meant to Be
The Cox family welcomed Gracie into their home as host parents. Brett Cox, owner of Specialists in Orthodontics, is also a basketball coach who shares the love of the game while supporting her journey.
KINDNESS CHRONICLES: A tribute to Becky
TAMI PAXTON FROM QUALITY YOUTH SERVICES SHARES HER STORY.
I have known Becky for 31 years. I worked for her twice before going into business with her for the last 18 years. The only time I ever saw her lose her calm demeanor was when she took a stand for justice. If she felt the rights of the youth and families she cared so deeply about were being infringed upon, Becky became a fearless leader in their defense. She held many community leadership positions, served on legislative action committees, and was an integral part of numerous subcommittees to benefit the clients she championed.
Rebecca Ruth Otsuka—known to us all as Becky—completed her higher education at the University of Northern Colorado in 1980. From there, she went on to change the lives of everyone around her, dedicating her career to juvenile justice and mental health. Over the decades, her lifelong commitment to youth included impactful work at Weber Valley Detention, Renaissance, Youth Residential, Nova, Intermountain Youth Care, Introspect, and Progressive Youth. In 2007, she brought her unparalleled expertise and passion to Quality Youth Services and later became a co-founder of DayOne Charity in 2010.
Becky not only cared for the youth and families she worked with, but she also cared for everyone around her. Countless stories have poured in about the little ways she cared for staff, community members, foster families, state employees, and youth providers'

association members. This care included quietly providing funds for medical care, supporting fundraising efforts for employees' children and grandchildren, helping single moms and food-insecure individuals, and offering financial assistance through a series of random acts of kindness. She often held long conversations with unassuming wisdom; she always set aside her busyness to give her full attention to the person in front of her; and she made you believe in yourself with every conversation.
Becky had a green thumb; she often took neglected houseplants home so she could "rehab them" with her gifted touch. She had a quick wit, always had great stories to tell, and loved coffee and good food. She spoke often and fondly about her family and friends. She was so very proud of her children and grandchildren, frequently attending school programs as a proud grandparent and showing clips of the performances during administrative meetings.
In fact, to honor her remarkable legacy of generosity, DayOne Charity has established a fund in her name—the Random Acts of Kindness Fund—to ensure ongoing giving in her memory.

Some of her favorite things to talk about each year over the last 18 years included bake day during the holidays; the World Series, who was winning, and how late she stayed up to finish the innings; her dislike of big-box stores; and how she loved events with Quality Youth Services but hated to plan them.
Quality Youth Services continues to honor Becky’s memory and her legacy by being a leader in mental health and behavioral services across Utah. We provide specialized mental health therapy to community members of all ages, focusing on trauma care, couples, children, high-conflict family issues, and behavioral interventions for youth. Notably, we are one of only four comprehensive dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) providers in the state. We help individuals navigate erratic, impulsive behaviors that affect interpersonal relationships, work, school, and families. In addition to therapy, Quality Youth Services provides privatized, therapeutic foster homes. Our specially trained foster families interact with a multidisciplinary team to offer respite and stabilization for youth in care. We also specialize in transitioning older youth to adult living, providing unique mother-in-law apartment settings that allow youth to practice independence while still relying on the security of treatment foster care.

BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SANCTUARY
Everything you need to know about visiting this stunning desert refuge in Kanab, Utah.
Tucked into Angel Canyon outside Kanab, Utah, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is a sweeping desert refuge where animals of every kind are given space, care, and a second chance at life. Set across nearly 6,000 acres of red rock cliffs and open desert trails, the sanctuary is home to dogs, cats, horses, pigs, rabbits, birds, and more.
What makes this place feel unique is the sense of calm and intention woven through it. Animals are cared for by a team of experts and volunteers, settling into specialized areas like Dogtown, Cat World, Horse Haven, and Parrot Garden— each designed like its own small world, shaped around the needs, behaviors, and comfort of every species.
Where
Best Friends is part of something much larger. As the flagship sanctuary of a national animal welfare organization, its work extends far beyond Kanab by partnering with shelters across the country. This helps reduce the number of animals entering overcrowded systems and expands pathways for adoption and care.
The sanctuary is as much about its people as it is about its animals. Volunteers come from all over the U.S. to spend a day, a week, or more, becoming part of the daily rhythm that keeps the canyon alive with care. So much of what occurs here depends upon that consistent presence.
Outside of the animal care areas, the landscape itself invites contemplation. For example,

the Gratitude Garden offers a quiet space to walk or sit along the canyon's edge. It is a journey both internal and external, filled with stunning art installations and natural beauty.
Every afternoon the iconic Angel Village Café opens. This is where visitors and employees will find delicious plant-based meals served with wide canyon views. A great place to refuel and rehydrate before continuing the day.
Then there is Angel’s Rest, a deeper quiet until the wind moves through it. The sanctuary includes a sacred space with wind chimes and memorials to the animals that have passed on. Here, a quiet balance exists where memory and presence meet. It is a place where love lives on in sound. It is a truly remarkable part of the sanctuary.
By welcoming visitors year-round through guided tours and volunteer opportunities, experiencing the sanctuary is a movement that is open to the public. With so much to see and do, lodging options are always available. From pet-friendly cabins and campsites to the newly opened Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile, every detail has been considered with visitors in mind.

EDITOR’S NOTE
Some places are difficult to describe because they're more than a destination—they're a feeling. My visit to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary was one of those experiences.
It’s a sanctuary for both humans and animals. It's the perfect addition to any road trip. I loved staying at the campground, but there are accommodations designed to fit every travel style.
If I were to recommend anything, it would be to have lunch at Angel Village Café. Perched above Angel Canyon, it offers a spectacular view and a phenomenal plant-based buffet. It was so surprisingly delicious that I extended my stay to eat there one more time before I headed home.
I knew I would fall in love with the animals. What I didn't expect was how inspired I would feel. Every staff member I met exuded an enthusiasm that was impossible to ignore. Their passion was profound, and it influenced every part of my experience.
Best Friends is so much more than animal rescue. It's something truly extraordinary

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY
ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE
Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.
ARTICLE BY KALI KASPRZYK
“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”
Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

WHERE KIDS MATTER
ARTICLE BY EVANA MAURIZ
YOUTH IMPACT PROVIDES MENTORSHIP, EDUCATION, AND COMMUNITY THROUGHOUT THE OGDEN AREA.
“Youth Impact isn't just a building; it's a second home to kids.”
Every child deserves a place where they feel safe, supported, and valued. For hundreds of Ogdenarea youth, that place is Youth Impact.
For more than 30 years, the nonprofit organization has provided after-school and summer programming for at-risk and underserved youth, creating opportunities that help children succeed both in and out of the classroom. From academic support and mentoring to athletics, arts, STEM education, and career-focused programs, Youth Impact offers much more than a place to spend a few hours after school.
"Youth Impact isn't just a building," says Program Manager and Interim Director Ali Conde. "It's like a second home to these kids. They learn that they matter here. No matter what kind of background they come from, you matter."
Each afternoon, students arrive ready to learn, connect, and grow. Homework help and tutoring provide academic support, while a dedicated mentor helps each participant track grades, navigate challenges, and build confidence. Mentors also work closely with families, schools, and community partners to ensure students have the support they need to succeed.
The opportunities extend far beyond academics. Youth Impact offers sports programs, art, theater, welding, STEM education, guitar instruction, Ballet Folklórico, and mariachi music. These experiences allow children to explore new interests, discover hidden talents, and gain skills that shape their futures.
One of the organization's most exciting areas of growth is its culinary program.
The small makeshift kitchen has evolved into a fully equipped culinary space thanks to generous community support and fundraising efforts. Today, students learn food preparation, kitchen safety, teamwork, and culinary techniques while gaining valuable hands-on experience.
The program also serves an important purpose within the organization. Six student participants help prepare meals that are served to their peers each evening, creating a sense of responsibility and pride while developing realworld skills. Dinner might include tacos, spaghetti, salad, beans and rice, garlic bread, and other hearty meals enjoyed together around the table.
That daily meal is one of the many ways Youth Impact creates a sense of family. For some participants, it may be the most consistent hot meal of the day. For all of them, it is an opportunity to gather, connect, and belong.
Another aspect that makes Youth Impact unique is its commitment to accessibility. Staff members pick students up directly from their schools and Sparks fly as students develop practical welding skills in one of Youth
Impact's many enrichment programs designed to prepare youth for future success.
Youth Impact's wide range of programs—including guitar, mariachi music, Ballet Folklórico, art, and theater— helps youth build confidence, explore creativity.
transport them to the program each afternoon. At the end of the evening, every child is driven home to their doorstep.
For many working families, transportation can be one of the biggest barriers to participation in after-school programs. By eliminating that obstacle, Youth Impact ensures more children have access to the resources, mentorship, and opportunities they need.
The need becomes even greater during the summer months when school is out of session. Without the structure and support that school provides, many young people face long days with limited supervision and few opportunities for enrichment. Youth Impact fills that gap through summer programming, field trips, community service projects, and partnerships with local organizations, including the Ogden Raptors and Ogden Mustangs.
These life-changing programs are made possible through grants, donations, volunteers, and community fundraisers. The organization's annual gala recently raised nearly $200,000 to help sustain summer operations, while its popular Casino Night fundraiser has helped fund major improvements, including the culinary kitchen that serves students today.
Through every ride home, every homework assignment completed, every meal served, and every mentor relationship built, Youth Impact continues to invest in the future of local youth.
At Youth Impact, success isn't measured only by grades, programs, or fundraising totals. It's measured by the young people who leave each day knowing they are valued, supported, and capable of achieving more than they ever imagined.

There is little more satisfying to your sweet tooth than ooey-gooey cinnamon rolls. Here is an easy and fun way to make this tearable, shareable treat!
CINNAMON MONKEY BREAD IS A FUN DESSERT FOR CHILDREN TO MAKE AND SHARE!
AROUND
INGREDIENTS
• 1/2 cup melted butter
• 1/3 cup granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
• 3 (12 oz.) cans of buttermilk biscuits
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Generously coat the inside of a bundt pan with cooking spray or butter. Melt the butter in a pot or bowl. Mix the sugars and cinnamon in a separate bowl.
Open one can of biscuits, separate, and cut each into four sections. Next, roll each quarter into a ball and then put each one into the sugar mixture to coat. Place the balls in the bundt pan in a single layer and drizzle a little melted butter evenly over the top. Repeat with the other two cans of biscuits. Sprinkle the remaining sugar mixture over the top and bake for 30-35 minutes.
Be sure to let cool for a minute or two before turning the bread onto a plate and carefully removing the pan. If you leave the monkey bread in the pan much longer, it will stick and be hard to remove.
I sometimes make icing, a few tablespoons of milk, to about 1/2 cup of powdered sugar with a splash of vanilla.
Drizzle over the top while warm and enjoy!
Homemade Dog Food
ARTICLE BY AMY TINNIN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
My two pugs are more than pets—they’re part of the family. That’s why I started making their food at home, and it’s been one of the most popular posts on my blog. You may be surprised just how easy this recipe is. I add all the ingredients to my slow-cooker to cook, and my dogs love it. If you decide to try this recipe for your pet, please consult your veterinarian. Every dog has different needs based on age, weight, and any health issues. You can even share this recipe with your vet to see if any changes are needed. The ingredients are flexible and can be easily swapped to substitute the turkey for chicken or beef, and even try different dog-safe vegetables. Making dog food at home isn’t hard—it just takes a little planning, and my dogs love it.
Slow Cooker
Homemade Dog Food
INGREDIENTS:
• 3 lbs ground turkey (85% lean)
• 1¼ cups frozen sweet potatoes
• 1½ cups frozen peas and carrots
• 1 cup frozen spinach
• 1½ cups uncooked brown or white rice
• 4 cups water
DIRECTIONS:
1. Add all ingredients to a slow cooker.
2. Break up the ground turkey and mix all the ingredients.
3. Cover and cook on High for 3–4 hours or Low for 6 hours, stirring occasionally.
Note: My dog food was ready in 3½ hours on High. Let cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freeze for later use.
