FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal.

New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August.

And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets!

There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in our town. Meet a few of them (and their four-legged friends) and you’ll find what makes the bond between humans and animals so special. We also whipped up a recipe for homemade dog treats so you can spoil your loyal companions.

IMPORTANT Be sure the peanut butter you use does not contain xylitol—the artificial sweetener can be fatal to dogs.

Peanut Butter + Oats INGREDIENTS + 1 cup old-fashioned oats + 1/2 cup flour + 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter + 1 egg

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat your oven to 300 F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, mix together oats, flour, peanut butter and egg until combined.

3. Roll your dough out on a flat surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.

4. Cut out your dog’s favorite shapes with cookie cutters.

5. Place your treats onto a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.

Makes about 36 1-inch diameter treats.

BARK IT UP If your dog doesn’t settle for plain, kick these treats up a notch by incorporating some of these dog-safe fruits and vegetables:

+ BANANAS—In moderation, bananas are great treats for dogs. Just beware of the sugar content—they shouldn’t be part of your dog’s regular diet. + BLUEBERRIES—Blueberries are a superfood full of antioxidants and fiber. Try these as a substitute to training treats. + CARROTS—Carrots are a great low-calorie snack high in beta-carotene and fiber. Chomping on them is also great for your dog’s chompers. + GREEN BEANS—Full of fiber and low in calories, plain green beans are great prepared any way! + WATERMELON—Filled with vitamins and potassium, this summer treat is sure to be your pup’s new favorite. For those dog days of summer, watermelon is a great way to keep your dog hydrated! Just be sure to remove the rind and seeds.

IT WAS A HUGE SURPRISE FOR A PRECIOUS FOUR-YEAR-OLD AND HER EIGHT-YEAR-OLD SISTER LAST WEEKEND WHEN OUR SPECIAL SPACES ORANGE COUNTY TEAM WORKED AROUND THE CLOCK TO MAKE HER DREAM OF A ‘GALAXY OF UNICORNS AND RAINBOWS’ COME TO LIFE! Meet Paloma! Our most recent recipient of a dream bedroom design makeover. Paloma is only four years old, but her journey with rare congenital heart disease began shortly after birth when she was diagnosed with Shone’s Complex. When I first met Paloma just a couple of months ago, I was immediately in awe of how spunky and talkative she was. I noticed her keen sense of awareness and loved her crazy fun imagination. She knew I was coming that day and was excited to share her ideas with me.

As part of our initial planning process with the family, it’s important to set aside a time to interview the parents and child so we can begin uncovering creative ideas for the new space. When I arrived to meet with the family that day, I giggled because Paloma and her sister Penelope had sketched pictures and notes for me about their dream room. Their images included bunk beds, a hanging chair for reading, lots of glitter, unicorns and rainbows and even an image of a projector so the sisters could watch movies together.

The latter was a poignant detail in how close the girls were and how Penelope always watched over and supported her little sis. Simply precious.

It’s not surprising that children battling a life-threatening illness appear older than their age. They endure so much, so soon in their little lives. Paloma and her sister are wise beyond their years.

Special Spaces is a non-profit organization with 40 chapters nationwide and has completed over 1,000 bedroom makeovers to date. We transform the child’s existing bedroom into a place that only he or she can dream or imagine. We believe the bedroom is so much more than a place to sleep—it is a special space for children to recover from the challenges of their illness; a special space to heal.

As Director of the Special Spaces Orange County chapter, I feel honored to direct a team of amazing volunteers and to also play a lead role in creating the design of the bedrooms. This effort takes a village to implement and we are only successful because of our donors, sponsors, and volunteers who so generously donate funds and time to bring these dreams to life. We are especially grateful to the Caroline K. Huo Group and Elizabeth Stolrow for sponsoring our most recent makeover for Paloma!

Over the course of my 20-year career in furniture and design, I’ve had the opportunity to create residential and commercial spaces for clients, but the joy I receive from creating experiences for these children is like nothing I was ever prepared for.

Sure, pulling together fun elements for the rooms are important, but I know the overall benefit is so much more. I truly believe the spaces we inhabit have a profound impact on health and happiness. It’s about exploring and discovering that one special thing that ignites emotion, and allowing an ability to create a design experience with the intention to trigger a deeper sense of healing during a period of transition.

We transform children’s lives one bedroom at a time, but in the end, I believe it’s those that serve who are ultimately transformed.

A RESCUED TREASURE DOG LOVERS UNITE!

EVERY DAY WE SEE DOGS WALKING THEIR OWNERS - WE LIVE IN A DOG-FRIENDLY CULTURE! Our pups join us at outdoor cafés and wait for us while we shop. They greet us when we get home and their furry faces smile when our eyes connect. They depend on us, and it’s up to us to keep them healthy.

Recently I was chatting with a gal who rescued a dog. She was sharing photos and mentioned that she rescued her dog from being sent to a large skincare facility in a US southern state where they test their chemicals on dogs. Aargh!

Thousands of dogs are used for testing chemicals on their skin and are forced to inhale fumes. Just in the US alone, over 60,000 dogs are held to endure painful, harmful testing every year. This doesn’t include what happens overseas.

As dog lovers and animal lovers, at Qēt Botanicals we refuse to practice any such testing. On the contrary, we can safely use some of our treatments on our dogs for relief. Their ears and feet can benefit from wholesome plantbased care, just like we do.

“ANXIETY: THE NEW TEEN EPIDEMIC” ONE TEEN’S JOURNEY TO HELPING OTHER TEENS

ACCORDING TO A HARVARD STATISTIC, IN 2019, 1 IN 3 TEENAGERS WILL EXPERIENCE CHRONIC ANXIETY. So many people of all ages suffer and don’t know what they are feeling, but especially with teenagers- the constant pressures and stresses. With so many social media outlets like Snapchat, Youtube, Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, it’s no wonder why so many teens are anxiety ridden. Growing up, Megan Gallagher went through just that. From ages nine to seventeen, she experienced chronic anticipatory anxiety and panic attacks.

She remembers being in elementary school and getting worried about going on school field trip and sleepovers. During 4th and 5th grade, her mother, Courtney introduced journaling to her! She would document what Megan was feeling and asked her why she would say her stomach or leg hurt. The anxiety soon manifested itself through crying, having pain in her body and asking her parents if she could stay home from daily activities. Thankfully she grew up in a household where she was encouraged to have open, honest conversations about her feelings. It wasn’t until she was a freshman in high school that she experienced her first panic attack.

It was a scary moment that shaped the next three years for her; she also grew up in a very academically competitive community that only increased her anxiety. Every day, she had up to 15 panic attacks and tried her best to lead a normal life. Towards the end of her sophomore year, she sat her parents down and explained how she was feeling. Soon after, she started on the journey of seeing therapists, exercising every day, establishing nighttime and morning routines as well as journaling.

Her parents were a huge support system while she was doing the inner work to feel better.

During her time in high school, she noticed a lack of honest conversations amongst her peers. She wondered if anyone else felt anxious and worried too? Teenagers are faced with so many overwhelming questions daily. With hormones, body changes, academic stress and social media- it’s no wonder why so many teens in 2019 are burnt out.

But why don’t they talk about it? Megan pondered this for years. Not only was she overwhelmed but she also felt bombarded with ACT’s, SAT’s, college applications and wondering what she was going to do with her life. During her freshman year of college, she had a health scare that changed her life and made her realize how precious her health was.

After healing, Megan dove headfirst into crossing items off the “bucket list” she made while sick. Now, at 23, she has turned her pain into her purpose and creates the open dialogue she constantly craved as a teen. She truly believes that when you realize that you are not alone with your struggles, there is a power in that. She is now the role model that she always wanted to be. She recently spoke at a Ted Talk Conference at Colton High School, where the title of her talk was, “Anxiety: The New Teen Epidemic”. She currently travels the country to speak at middle schools and high schools about anxiety and her road to healing. She wants teenagers to feel confident in themselves and know that they aren’t alone with feeling anxious, overwhelmed or confused about life. In the Fall, she will be speaking at Shorecliffs Middle School (San Clemente) and Sage Hills High School (Newport Beach)!
