“HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS.” It’s a common phrase meaning that our homes are a central place in our lives—where we rest our heads, nourish our bodies and make fond memories with loved ones. It’s the epicenter of our worlds, where we start and end each day, and where we keep our most prized possessions. This month, we bring you our Home issue, which is full of ideas for creating the best environment wherever you call home—whether it’s a cozy apartment, a spacious condo or an ocean view house. When was the last time you took a day to appreciate the historical architecture in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, or took a long walk through the Dana Point Harbor. These places are just a few of the anchors that make these cities special, warm and invoke that feeling of coming home. With springtime upon us, there’s no better time to explore new places outside your home or invest a little "sweat equity" inside your home. In this issue we feature a local truly "home-grown" cafe, DIY ideas for refreshing the interior and exterior of

RAMOS HOUSE CAFE A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle | March 2019
OUR CURRENT CITIES ARE FILLED WITH RUSHED TRAFFIC, BUSY LIFESTYLES WITH MANY IN A BIG HURRY TO GET TO SOMEWHERE. Do you ever sit in traffic or a busy freeway wishing you could find a delightful get-away not to far away and feel some magic in your life! I know the exact place and it's right in San Juan Capistrano, CA. This is a special story about Ramos House Cafe located in the Los Rios Historic District, the oldest remaining neighborhood in California and dating back to 1794. The history of families and business that have come and gone has left implanted footprints on this glorious street. There is no traffic and a definite sense of peace and magic filling the air surrounding this area. The heart, soul and lifestyle of Ramos House Cafe is indigenous of owner, chef John Q. Humphreys, a man of extraordinary vision and commitment to perfection towards every endeavor in and around his life. You might walk into this establishment, feeling the excitement of success for this entrepreneur, however the history in the making has been quite a journey. Humphreys, a man of conviction, experienced years of ups, downs, hardships and losses. He persevered never looking back and followed his dream to success. Humphreys is native to Southern California raised in Newport Beach. His love for cooking started early in his lifetime while loving to entertain and prepare ingenious meals for friends. His special flair initialized divine gatherings to remember. He graduated from New York’s Culinary Institute of America with a thesis having a restaurant in his home. During 1993 still considering his dream, a chance opportunity appeared bringing him to the home on Los Rios Street built in 1881. The home was dilapidated and ready to be boarded up and torn down. Humphreys kept his dream in tact with many on his side for success. Ramos House Cafe opened in 1995. This culinary icon raised the bar with American comfort food along with associate chef Leonel Lagunas.

HOT SPOT (CON TI N U ED)
The idea of the Ramos House is simple. Like the old days, its owner lives and works at the house. The wines are kept in the cellar, the herbs are grown in the garden and the ice cream is turned out back. The menu changes daily and everything is made from scratch – “Welcome to my home, John Q.” Most all the produce is grown locally and organically and you can smell the coffee being roasted down the street. The seafood is either caught in the wild or raised sustainably. Q is great fan of music, especially the blues. Several gramophones with an array of records is available for your choosing adding a special flavor of its own. I'm invited to go on a culinary journey. My first treat is a delicious cup of fresh brewed coffee with light creamy foam and sweetness. A side dish of cinnamon apple beignets arrive with a side cup of hot chocolate topped with a roasted marshmallow. Later I'm presented with winter vegetable hash topped with a fried poached egg looking like an interior designed presentation. The hash is made with fingerling potatoes, romanesco

cauliflower, asparagus, pearl onions, cauliflower and microgreens. The egg is poached in simmering mimosa, then lightly coated in breadcrumbs and fried. The sauce consists of kabocha squash, garlic, salt and pepper and topped with a horseradish foam. A buttermilk biscuit, one that literally melted in my mouth, is a memory forever. All combined created a dinner dance in my mouth savoring every array of complimentary flavors. I have to mention the grapefruit fizz, a magnificent combination of champagne, fresh grapefruit, basil, sorbet and huckleberries from the garden; what a treat! Ramos House Cafe is open daily except for Wednesday's 8:30 am – 3 pm serving breakfast and lunch. Starting in February, Humphreys plans to start serving a once a month 6 course dinner on a selected Wednesday with two seating’s, 5pm and 6:30pm. Cost $55 per person. SLOW DOWN. Take a deep breath. Close your eyes and feel your body. Notice the movement of energy pulsing through your physical frame. It’s not just your heart pumping, it’s energy. Einstein said, “Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another.” Energy is everywhere and its expressed in infinite forms. We are all made of this energy. In that, we are the same. Have you ever considered that this energy you sense is really your home? You are a unique expression of this ever-present energy. You are not only connected to the energy that is everywhere, this energy is you! Over time as I have developed and expanded my relationship with this belief, I have found it to be a constant source of peace. If you are a meditator, you may already know what I am talking about. If you’re not, would you consider giving a try to develop a stronger connection with this energy inside you? Would you give it a try if you knew it could feel as good as being in

SWEAT EQUITY OPTIMIZING THE HIDDEN POTENTIAL IN YOUR HOME
ARTICLE CAROLINE K. HUO, ELIZABETH STOLROW CARNELIAN REAL ESTATE
FOR MOST, A HOME IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT ONE WILL EVER MAKE. Given that, protecting the value of your investment should be a top priority…in other words how much “sweat equity - the value-enhancing improvements generated from the sweat of one’s brow,” makes sense? Well, it depends on a number of circumstances. Whether you plan to stay in your home, look to sell or utilize as an income property, ensuring your homes’ value does not have to be an expensive or expansive process. So how do you decide what to do and when, if anything? Our team at Carnelian has years of experience providing advice and expert resources to clients for this very thing. We advise our clients to start with a thorough evaluation of your home. Once you know what are “must have’s” versus “nice to have’s” you can prioritize and plan accordingly. Here are five easy, low-cost ways to best understand improvement options for your home.
