FEBRUARY—IT’S THE SHORTEST MONTH OF THE YEAR, BUT THERE’S DEFINITELY NO SHORTAGE OF EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING HERE IN THE SPECIAL COMMUNITIES OF SAN CLEMENTE, DANA POINT AND SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO. When thinking of ideas for our Arts + Makers issue, we were inspired by our local creatives who beautify our community with their work. Whether it’s live theater performances, the small-town arts scene or handmade goods from local artisans, we were inspired by the creative culture these cities are bursting with. Some of our favorite arts-related things to experience around the area include handcrafted items, thoughtfully designed and personally inspired by some very talented people right here in our communities. We unveil their stories, their love for what they do and where you can find these one of a kind treasures in time for Valentines Day. AT FIVE YEARS OF AGE LITTLE BROWN HAIRED, DOE EYED NICCI JULIAN WAS MEASURING AND MIXING IN THE KITCHEN OF HER FAMILY HOME. As her friends watched cartoons, with flour dusting her hair and dough stuck to her hands, Julian instead was mesmerized by the Food Network. By the age of 10, Julian was a passionate student in chef taught baking classes in Laguna Canyon. Family holiday vacations spent in Palm Springs had mom entering her daughter in local cookie challenges. As the hands down winner three years in a row, Julian’s delectable creations belied her youth.

Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle | February 2019

The recipe the Julian family uses for the success of Confectious Pastry Shop is love, support, and enthusiasm. Dad eagerly encouraged his daughter’s dreams by having a commercial grade kitchen built in their home. As the business continues to grow and flourish, he happily constructs cooling racks in their kitchen, piece by piece. Mom’s loyal devotion in her daughter’s innate talents are infused within every baked good created. “Right from the start, our goal was that everything we made looked beautiful, but needed to taste delicious first,” says Julian. “We are committed to never sacrificing flavor for décor.” Immediately after graduating Dana Hills High School in 2013 Julian enrolled in the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley. Part of their program required an internship which Julian later secured at Pelican Hill Resort in Newport. Julian’s exuberant passion for baking and her skill at inventing new flavors soon landed her a coveted position as pastry cook at the resort. Mom’s battle with cancer brought Julian back home in 2014. As a dedicated warrior on mom’s behalf, Julian stayed local, enrolling in business and marketing classes at Saddleback College. Julian baked then baked some more, honing her skills and transforming pastries into art forms. From the kitchen at home, she posted images of her baked goods first onto Facebook then Instagram. The response was spectacular and orders flooded in. Even when mom sadly passed away, her unrelenting faith in her daughter was lovingly kneaded into every creation. The strength and conviction her family instilled in Julian propelled her forward. In 2015 Julian published a baking book titled Confectious Easy Desserts. In 2016 she partnered with local event planners and restaurant owners and networked alongside them to increase sales. Her tantalizing and innovative treats are now regularly featured at Ricardo’s Place in San Juan Capistrano, Starfish Laguna Beach, and Rothschilds in Newport. Yet the exceptional combination of Julian’s expertise and compassionate nature blended together with perfection in 2018 when she officially launched her website, confectiouspastryshop.com. Soon thereafter, she graduated from Chapman University, obtaining a degree in business administration with an emphasis on entrepreneurship. These milestones led to a number of advantageous partnerships. Julian joined a group of vivacious young professionals, The Elite OC, who are committed to raising funds and hosting events in conjunction with local charities. Julian also established her personal tagline, Confectious-Bake-Me-A Wish, in order to ally with the Make-A-Wish and Gold Rush Cure Foundations. It is right here where Julian’s heart resides. A recent event with Gold Rush Cure found Julian at a child’s surprise party for a young boy afflicted with leukemia. People came dressed as The Incredibles and Julian’s cakes coordinated with the theme. The little boy said thank you over and over. And taking pictures alongside the super heroes, he kept announcing “I’m strong too, I’m really strong.” “I bake wishes,” says Julian. “Nothing compares to the face of a child, electric with joy.”

A MAKER WOMEN WHO LISTEN WITH THEIR EYES, HEAR WITH THEIR HEARTS, AND CREATE WITH THEIR HANDS.

MAKERS ARE NOT JUST VISIONARIES OR DREAMERS. Visualizing a creation in the mind’s eye is merely the first step. Then there’s the act of imagining, ruminating, and sorting out details. After which, a maker breathes life into their vision. At times, they must work against all odds and ignore the doubters, the naysayers. Afterward, they funnel their heart and soul into it, formulating their dream into a reality. Finally, they open their hands, palms up, and offer us what they’ve created.

Brigitta Trumper proffers forth a tiny, fawn colored box. A terracotta ribbon is wrapped around it and cinched into a bow. As one opens the lid and peers within, nestled on a bed of cotton, is a handcrafted bracelet with beads the color of autumn leaves. Antiquated metal spacers between the beads compliment the attached St. Christopher medal. Held up to natural light, the beads alter and shift in texture and hue. Unveiling her gift is as much experience as the gift itself. “For me, designing the visual of the package is almost as important as what’s contained within it,” says Trumper. “It evolves into a gift inside of a gift.” Trumper is the sole proprietor of @chestnutandfig.com; a line of unique, innovative jewelry she makes from within her workshop in San Clemente. Trumper chooses the beads and charms that she incorporates into her designs with her heart; often discovering them in tiny, remote villages all over the world. She willingly spends time and money seeking out one-of-a-kind trinkets and remains intent on never compromising quality in order to make sales. Trumper’s final creations honor and reflect a deep love of travel and heritage instilled in her by her beloved Italian grandparents. Even the name, chestnut and fig, evokes her fondest childhood memories of fall in Italy, roasting smoky chestnuts and plucking ripe figs from mountainside trees. The distinctive beads, vintage charms, and ancient coins she integrates into her designs are not simply strung together yet they illustrate and reveal a journey. “When I meet with clients we talk, listen, and share stories,” says Trumper. “By doing so, I cultivate them a piece which distinctly embodies who they are.”

Walking into Heidi Brunswick’s studio in Dana Point is akin to entering a technicolor rainbow. Bamboo and palm trees brush up against the windows that encircle her space. A vibrant cornucopia of “one of a kind” garments are lining the walls. A kaleidoscope of thread spools stand huddled together under the eaves. In the corner is the trusty, antiquated sewing machine Brunswick has relied on for more than 30 years. Brunswick has an outstanding career that spans 43 years. As her business cards proclaim her business is “a joy, a dream, unique and full.” A quintessential blend of her architect father and a European mother, Brunswick’s been “building” her own

“Riding my bike around Laguna Beach, I pilfered thrift stores for vintage fabric,” says Brunswick. “Then I took the pieces apart and personalized them to make them ME.” Brunswick’s unique line at Inheiding.com is awe-inspiring in its versatility. No two pieces are alike, and all cutting, sewing, dyeing, and ironing are done by Brunswick. Her clothing drapes over the body like a complementary second skin. Whether dressing up, down or traveling rather than being “in hiding” with her creations, YOU are unveiled. An array of both hand-dyed velvet and linen are both tantalizing to the touch and visually stunning. Brunswick sells from right off the rack in her home studio, and covers a broad spectrum of styles, from tie-dyed tanks to her elegant trademark kimono. “Some of my items have manifested by accident,” says Brunswick. “Because I refuse to throw even the tiniest scrap of fabric away, all of it finds a home on a design.”

HAVE YOU ALWAYS COLORED INSIDE THE LINES? Have you always played it safe? Have you always, when faced with coloring your life and surroundings gravitated to the comfort of beige? Beige that seems to permeate most interiors pretending to be modern. Beige which along with monochromatic pallets seems to have taken over the pages of every lifestyle magazine out there of late! Well here we are once again entering a new year and as always happens we are all aflutter with trends and predictions and the buzz for what will be in and what is so last year. What does the crystal ball of many experts in the field say or what are the fanciful new names major paint companies are serenading us all within 2019? I mean after all no wall in your home should be left as a blank canvas, right? So get ready to hear a lot about Hazelnut, Lilac Gray, Muted Pastels, New Blues, Mist, Mushroom, and Pewter. We may not look at colors in a way that they define what we feel. Whether they make us feel good or bad may be a question of personal association or belief. However, the fact remains that they do make every aspect of life beautiful and meaningful with a splash of their variant tones and hues! It has been known, after all, since the dawn of time and when man first placed pigment on the cave wall that colors are not only a delight for our eyes and soul but used skillfully they have the powers of unseen magic. In fact, colors are so powerful that in the area of Chromotherapy it has been clinically proven that our body can be affected in specific measurable ways when we are exposed to them. Furthermore, one can even say that a harmonious exposure and thus absorption of color is necessary for maintaining health naturally. Wearing certain colors have helped enhance our moods. “among all the things you’re making, consider”

a shift in perspective one of them

CONSIDER A RE-ROUTE AS THE GIFT OF A COSMIC RE-DIRECTION ARTICLE DONNA BOND, PROFESSIONAL LIFE COACH PHOTOGRAPHY UPSPLASH, MANT, LOPES, STEWART

JOHN LENNON SAID, “LIFE IS WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU, WHILE YOU’RE BUSY MAKING OTHER PLANS”. We are always making something, aren’t we? We make appointments. We make dinner. We make love. We make a house a home. We make babies. We make time. We make friends and we make coffee. In every moment, with every breath, we make decisions that make our life. We make plans and then God laughs, as the saying goes. And then sometimes, we have to make a U-Turn.

WHAT DO WE DO WHEN THE EXPECTATIONS WE HAVE FOR THE THINGS WE ARE MAKING, DON’T GO THE WAY WE PLANNED? In that precious moment, we are again invited to make a choice. We can choose to get angry, we can try and force our way into something or we can take a cue from the universe and perhaps allow ourselves to be redirected. I call this following the flow. Falling in step with life, whatever life has for me. If it’s something I feel inspired about having or creating in my life, I’ve learned to interpret this redirection not as the universe saying “no”, only that it may be saying, “not this way.” Does this lead to disappointment or feeling badly that things aren’t going my way? Sometimes it does. And, the older (and wiser) I get, I have discovered that my happiness and feeling good doesn’t really come from things outside of me. It comes from inside of me. I get choose if I’m happy or sad based on the stories I tell myself and the meaning I attach to things. I also believe that at every moment, I am exactly where I am Making Time

everything happens for a reason. I believe the universe is giving me a cosmic redirect. What is also helpful is I feel grateful believing I was just spared from loss or aggravation or something I may never know about – and never need to. As the universe is comprised of this everywhere present energetic intelligence, and I am only a part of that, I believe the universe is smarter than me. Therefore; while I don’t always take direction well, I do listen carefully and take cues from how the universe is guiding me. Holding this perspective, I am making an empowered choice to see whatever life is dishing out, in a positive way. This grounds me, not as a victim of life’s circumstances, but a willing participant to engage with what life is showing me, where life is taking me, what life is making with me. And, when I am in cooperation with that, I experience flow and grace and ease. We often spend a lot of time rowing our boat against the tide. Can you shift your perspective in not always getting what you want? What if you threw the oar’s over the side of the boat and let yourself float… gently down the stream? If you can shift your perspective around what feels like making a wrong turn, it may give you an awesome sense of direction. LOCAL LIMELIGHT

small-batchfrom-scratch MEET THE MAKER

ARTICLE LISA BRILL DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR FOOD COMES FROM? The fresher the better ~ it’s nice to know where that fresh basket of berries came from. How about the products we use every day that our skin eats? Many personal care products – cleansers, moisturizers, deodorants – are mass-produced, preserved with harmful preservatives, filled with synthetics, fragrances, and are placed on the shelves for our skin to eventually devour. They’re stale, artificially formulated, and are often not fresh and naturally performing. Our skin absorbs a portion of what we put on it. Products can also penetrate into deeper levels of the dermis, and potentially even the blood stream.

That being said… real food feeds the body, and likewise, real skincare feeds the skin. We can’t get the nourishment and vitamins our body needs from opening up a can of spaghetti! In our Qēt Botanicals Skin Studios, we hand select every local and global ingredient, buy nothing premixed, and formulate and make products daily with precise care and love for not only its formula, but for its effectiveness, sustainability, and enjoyment. We focus entirely on plant-based ingredients… oils that are organic, wildcrafted and cold pressed, as well as a selection of raw botanicals and phytonutrients. We keep into consideration percentages of actives, keeping things safe for pregnant and nursing moms and for those that want to eliminate harmful chemicals. We smallbatch-from-scratch every face, body, and hair treatment shortly before sharing and shipping it. Every drop matters. Feel free to pop into our local Skin Studio! We’re at 223 Avenida del Mar, San Clemente, or shop and peek via our website at QetBotanicals. We can sniff, discover, and explore the many ways to care for our largest organ from the outside, which ultimately, may keep our insides functioning properly and healthy, too.
