June's Journey: A Tribute to Men

Welcome to the June edition of Northwest Columbus City Lifestyle—where we uncover the essence of what it means to celebrate fathers, as well as the men and father figures who enrich our lives and inspire us.

I was never the easiest daughter. My Dad took me to the movies when I was a toddler to see Jack and The Beanstalk, and I got so scared that I crawled under the seats, row after row, heading to the front of the theater. The poor guy had to stop at every row to track me until I got to my destination. My stepfather didn’t have it any easier—I was the daughter that said, “I’m having just a few friends over” only to have 300 kids show up at our house. Despite my antics, they both supported and inspired me to pursue whatever dreams I had. My husband, Bryan, inspires me everyday with his sense of humor, the zany songs that he makes up on-the-fly and his never-ending support of my never-ending ideas and projects.

While the calendar may cue us toward Father's Day, our narrative this month transcends the traditional. It speaks not just of fathers but of the grand tapestry of male influence that shapes us, our families and our communities.

This month, we dip our toes into the culinary realm of "Dude Food." We invite you into the sanctuary of interiors designed with a masculine touch—spaces that resonate with utility and flare. Perhaps most captivating is our feature on a father and his sons who've woven their family threads into a robust business that brings families together in their own backyard. It's a tale that reflects many a man's desire to build something lasting, something that proudly bears his signature yet promises a shared future.

Our issue is, at its core, an ode to all men—for they are often the quiet shoulders we lean on, the architects of the subtle safety nets we sometimes take for granted, the playful spirits that keep the flame of joy alive in our daily dance of life.

So sit back, pour yourself something delightful and savor the richness of our men’s issue. Let the men in your life know how much they matter to you and enjoy the warmth of June and what the summer has to offer.

Warm regards,

June 2024

Trevor Furbay and his wife, Amy Furbay A display of Trevor Furbay's eye-catching sport coats

Even the most stylish of gents find themselves asking, "What do I wear?" from time to time, whether headed to work, a special occasion or more casual event. As the confines of Covid Comfort have been lifted, what's a guy to wear? Owner of Trevor Furbay Bespoke shop, Trevor Furbay, has you covered.

"Everyone became accustomed to comfort during covid," Trevor says. "Now we are seeing the desire to return to dressing up."

If you're pondering what "dressing up" encompasses these days, think sport coats, button downs and loafers—the classics—but with the added element of comfort. An example of this, Trevor explains, is a stretch blazer that has the look of polish with the added benefit of stretch and comfort, an item by Greysen Clothiers, a brand housed in Trevor's store boasting everyday essentials like polo shirts, trousers, t-shirts and joggers.

Another brand Trevor and his team believe will keep you fashionable this summer is Faherty, one of the strongest casual brands in his Cincinnati and Harbor Springs, MI locations, known for its casual-cool, East Coast vibe.

And as far as staying stylish for everyday goes, blending contemporary and classic is a proven method. A smart jacket, all day shorts and sneakers is a good example of this, as is a simple t-shirt and denim paired with an excellent belt.

CHEF’S SELECTION | FOOD + BEVERAGE DUDE FOOD - THE BEST BBQ & BREWERIES 16

AS TOLD BY FOODIE EXPERT

Nicholas Dekker is a Columbus food and travel writer who has made numerous TV appearances from a PBS documentary to local TV spots to Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

"I love getting to tell the stories of hardworking restaurant owners, and to help serve as a guide for people looking for interesting food, travel ideas and family fun." Nick says. "I've always enjoyed exploring restaurants, especially breakfast joints," which explains the name of his platform, Breakfast With Nick.

Here, Nick provides his top picks for which breweries and barbecues to check out this summer.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TOP BREWERY GO-TOS AND WHY?

Nick:  I love how  Columbus Brewing Company's Beer Hall makes use of the historic Trolley District. It's a beautiful space with brick walls and patios, a huge selection of Columbus Brewing Company beers and an excellent food menu. It's a great spot to taste a number of their signature IPAs and pair them with Belgian frites, poutine, pizza and burgers.

[In contrast],  Nocterra Brewing in Powell has become this great community space. On top of their excellent beer, they

host plenty of interesting events and live music, have their own food truck, and—my particular favorite—have a giant beer garden with picnic tables, fire pits and other spaces to relax.

Speaking of patio spaces, the beer garden at  Gemüt Biergarten is another favorite. The German-style brewery hammers out authentic European brews in a restored historic fire station in Olde Towne East. You can hang out in the beer hall with its stained glass windows, or you can camp out on the spacious patios. I like their schnitzel and späetzle.

"I've always enjoyed exploring restaurants, especially breakfast joints."

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BBQ SPOTS?

Nick: Ray Ray's Hog Pit  is my go-to. They recently opened a truck in front of Aardvark Wine & Beer in Linworth. I especially love their brisket and jerk chicken sandwiches. Ray Ray's has a number of locations that lets you hang out with BBQ and drinks. I love their truck parked at Land-Grant Brewing in Franklinton, where you can also grab a slice of Mikey's pizza. And they have a newer truck with a funky menu called Ray Ray's Reload that's parked at the Bottle Shop in Victorian Village.

Martiny's BBQ in Lewis Center is an under-the-radar, family-run spot up on

Route 23. The building is pretty low profile, but sometimes that makes for the best finds. Their brisket, ribs and pork belly burnt ends are killer, but I especially love their side dishes. The mac and cheese and baked beans are some of my favorites in town.

Another favorite family-owned spot is  Hank's Texas BBQ  in Clintonville. They do creative bar food really, really well. So while you can savor tender brisket, pulled pork and smoked chicken, they have a lot of fun with their full menu. You'll find fried pickle chips, brisket nachos, poutine and cheese curds, birria brisket tacos and loaded corn cakes. I especially dig their sauces.

CL: WHAT MAKES COLUMBUS A STANDOUT DESTINATION AS A FOOD AND DRINK SCENE?

Nick:  I think Columbus still flies under the radar a bit, so it's still a surprise to first-time visitors. They're stunned to find world-class restaurants, nearly 75 breweries, great cocktail bars, a range of international restaurants and hidden gems all around the city. I think Columbus benefits from having multiple neighborhoods and suburbs that each have their own identity, so you can spend multiple weekends exploring different parts of town and find amazing food and drink in every corner.

1- Guaranteed Rate home equity line of credit (HELOC) is an open-end product where the full loan amount (minus the origination fee) will be 100% drawn at the time of origination. The initial amount funded at origination will be based on a fixed rate; however, this product contains an additional draw feature. As the borrower repays the balance on the line, the borrower may make additional draws during the draw period. If the borrower elects to make an additional draw, the interest rate for that draw will be set as of the date of the draw and will be based on an Index, which is the Prime Rate published in the Wall Street Journal for the calendar month preceding the date of the additional draw, plus a fixed margin. Accordingly, the fixed rate for any additional draw may be higher than the fixed rate for the initial draw. This product is currently not offered in the states of New York, Kentucky, Texas, West Virginia, Delaware and Maryland. The HELOC requires you to pledge your home as collateral, and you could lose your home if you fail to repay. Borrowers must meet minimum lender requirements in order to be eligible for financing. Customize your very own "Whiskey Room" with Keith Rupp, owner of Residence Design Build

For Keith Rupp, owner of Residence Design Build, every remodel is an opportunity to blend aesthetics with personalized functionality. Nowhere is that clearer than in his recent basement remodels, both of which were transformed into stylized places to store— and indulge in— fine wine and liquor.

“I love a moody space for these,” says Rupp. The remodels gave the owners ample space to display their wine and whiskey collections and was carefully curated by Rupp to create a “moody feel” for the space. Rupp always considers usage of light in spaces like these, especially when incorporating it into displays and shelves.

ARTICLE BY ASHLEY LABAKI

Mid: A darkly painted ceiling contrasts beautifully with a light chandelier. Bottom: A casual-style basement bar

“When you’re doing a moody room like a whiskey room or a wine cellar, you don’t want task lighting. You’ll see a lot of over-lit rooms [that way],” says Rupp. “You want open shelves to show those collections off. Cabinets or shelves that are lit from the interior or behind create that ambiance.”

For wine and whiskey rooms, Rupp recommends using elements like darker or atonal color palettes, natural materials such as rustic woods and bricks, metal accents and leather furniture. Ceilings, he says, are often overlooked, but should be painted to avoid a stark contrast between it and the walls.

“People kick back about the dark painted ceilings,” says Rupp. “So I have to encourage them sometimes—trust your designer.”

To create harmony between these darker, moodier spaces and the rest of your home, Rupp recommends tying in elements from the other rooms. For these designs, he used gold metal accents and similar shades of paint.

“You have to do that for any good design so it flows with the rest of the house,” says Rupp. “You don’t want it to be like you’ve stepped into another home.”

Rupp says there isn’t a significant difference between designing for men and designing for women or couples. He advises utilizing unused spaces to get the most out of your home, and trusting your designer to blend your wants with their tried-and-true experience to give you a space you’ll love.

Man-caves, game rooms and garages are other popular spaces Rupp designs for men, but there is one specialty room Rupp says he’d really like to work on: workshops.

“Those would be awesome to design,” Rupp says.

Attacking Your Honey-Do List

KEEPING YOUR HOME'S EXTERIOR IN TIP TOP SHAPE KEEPS THAT ANNUAL LIST NICE AND SHORT!

OUTDOOR LIVING | HOME SERVICES
SmartLevel Concrete driveway repair
26
Tri State Roofing repairs broken shingles among other roof damages.

Homeownership comes with a lot of responsibility, especially where maintenance is concerned. Neglecting upkeep can lead to an unsightly appearance and, in some cases, damage to the structural integrity or safety of your home. When your spouse comes to you with that “honey-do” list, it’s important to know what to look for and when you should bring in a professional—someone like the experts behind SmartLevel Concrete.

Concrete can be found in many places on your property, including sidewalks, driveways, porches and even inside the home. It can also be a significant hazard if not maintained properly. Unlevel or crooked concrete often leads to trips and falls, Emma Osborn of SmartLevel Concrete says, but are easily repaired with the help of a leveler.

“We drill a small hole about the size of your pinky into your concrete and then pump polyurethane foam underneath,” Emma says. “As it expands, it lifts the concrete back up and then solidifies. And in about 15 minutes, you can drive a car on top of it.”

You’ll be able to tell your concrete needs leveled if it appears sunken or if you can hear a hollow sound when you tap it, which indicates there is a void beneath the slab. Large gaps between steps or your driveway and garage entrance can also be indicators.

“When you’re driving into your garage from your driveway and you feel like you really have to rev up to get over that hump, it shouldn’t be like that,” Emma comments.

To fix the issue, leveling is a quick process and has a relatively small environmental impact, and is “typically a third to half the cost” of replacing concrete, Emma says.

While leveling can be performed on cracked concrete as well, there are times when replacement is the better option for homeowners.

The roof and gutters are other important parts of your home’s exterior that should not be neglected. Nick Onega of Tri State Roofing recommends having your roof inspected routinely to assess any damage, and doing regular preventative care to your gutters to prevent overflow and clogging.

“I’d say every couple of years just have someone look at it and re-caulk some areas,” Nick says. “For siding, it just depends on the type. Clean your gutters out, preferably yearly, and you can put gutter guards on, too.”

While gutter cleanings are often accessible projects for homeowners to perform on their own, roof repair and replacement are both big projects that are best left to professionals, Nick says. There’s often a good indicator that it’s time to replace completely. “If it’s super old or super brittle, sometimes you just can’t repair it,” Nicks says. “It's going to keep on breaking and cracking and tearing.”

As we saw in the spring, storms created issues for homeowners around Columbus who endured damage from high winds, tornados and hail. If you're unsure or worried about the wear and tear on your home's exterior, Nick explains there are a few ways you can tell if storms have caused damage through a visual assessment.

“For wind, you’ll see [loose] shingles, and even bent shingles,” Nicks says. “For hail, on your downspouts and gutters there will be dings. And If you have any kind of soft metal on the house, you’ll see damage there.”

Doing regular maintenance on your roof, concrete and other outside areas of your home can shorten your honey-do list significantly, and keep your home looking great in the process. And if necessary, making a quick call to a professional will get the job done straight away.

Mike Chekanoff has been in construction his entire life. Starting back when he was just a boy, he would accompany his father (who had his own construction business) on job sites that involved mostly exterior construction and remodeling, learning the tricks of the trade of what it takes to run a successful and enjoyable business early

Alex, who manages operations, and Joe, who oversees website and business operations, were eager to make what is now the Chekanoff family business a success. "We're picking up the trade from dad," Joe says.

Being in the patio enclosure and decking business for decades, starting The Exterior Living Company is a dream

"LIKE MOST PEOPLE, FAMILY IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME."

on. His father was influential in Mike's choosing a career path and ultimately starting a business in the exterior living space.

After decades of working in construction and remodeling, Mike asked himself, "What do I want to do with the last 10 years of my career?"

The answer? Build a family business that he and his sons can be proud of.

"Like most people, family is so important to me," Mike says. "As a father, you want to take the lumps for your kids so they don't have to. To me, it's not work. I've always been fortunate that my job has felt like doing something I wanted to be doing. [With a family business], you're establishing something to be proud of—every family-owned business can relate to that."

come true for all three Chekanoff men on multiple accounts. Their specialty is creating "exterior backdrops" that create the perfect outdoor escape homeowners dream of through designing and building beautiful sun rooms and decks that the whole family can enjoy.

Partnering with premium decking company TimberTech for long-lasting and environmentally sound decking, Mike, Joe and Alex elevate homeowners' living spaces in a minimal maintenance environment using unique composites which are made out of recycled grocery store bags, polymers and resins, providing a 30-year warranty and financing options to homeowners.

your outdoor living experience, from lighting packages and pergolas to swim spas, privacy screens and "all of the fun things." If you aren't looking to completely remodel, but need resurfacing of an existing wood deck or want to replace or add a sliding or French door, consider the Chekanoff men the guys for the job.

"You want the deck to coordinate with the home," Mike says. "You can be really creative with color schemes, decking patterns and floor board patterns."

As for things to consider when building, Mike provides simple guidelines. "How large is your family? When you entertain, how many people do you have over? You [also] need to think about how you are going to use your deck today versus how you are going to use it in the future. [For example], your kids may be toddlers now, but maybe you're thinking about graduation parties in the future."

Budget is another factor to consider, which Mike assures homeowners they "don't need to go full out right away" with building a deck and sunroom. "Build the deck first, as it is the foundation" Mike says. "In the future, we can add a three-season room. And within 8-10 years, you have your dream outdoor living."

"It all starts with a good plan," Alex adds.  They are smart with their approach, keeping functionality and practicality— in addition to a gorgeous aesthetic—top of mind.

"Design is extremely important when you're thinking of how to maximize your space," Mike says. "The deck location in its relationship to the door is just one of the few things people can consider. Do you want two sitting zones? Would you like a café table? Are you a griller? You

want to make sure your grill isn't in a high traffic area where little hands can get to the grill. I often build steps wider so kids can enjoy their popsicles and have lunch on the steps," Mike says. "It can really become a part of your life."

The fact that Mike, Joe and Alex have mastered all aspects of the job, from digging holes to framing to designing, can't be overlooked.

"We come with the proper tools, proper equipment and proper experience," Mike says. "We understand not only the products we represent but the materials that are already a part of your home, taking things like the weather into consideration when building. These types of decisions need to be made with a lot of thought."
