In the midst of a time of year that can be a little miserable, it’s nice to douse the world in pink and celebrate love! In more recent years, the month of February has evolved. It’s not just about showing your appreciation for a romantic partner anymore, but has grown to encompass all kinds of love– familial love, the love you hold for your friends, and even the love that can be shared among members of a community. That’s what we theme our February issue around here at Northwest Bergen Lifestyle. This is the Love Local issue, and it’s all about finding and celebrating the wonderful things that our community has to offer! We’re lucky enough to live in a beautiful area that’s full of vibrant and interesting people, and this issue is our chance to call some of them out! This month, we’ll introduce you to Paulette Laurenzi, who’s spreading hope to struggling families through her monumental charity, the Spring Lake Hope Foundation. You’ll also meet Andrea Mistretta, a talented local artist who’s been creating stunning paintings, including celebratory Mardis Gras posters, for many years. Last but certainly not least, we’ll bring you in for a closer look at the miniature world of model railroads at the Garden State Model Railway Club as we chat with Ron Bassani about the club’s decades of history and exciting future. In these pages, we hope you’ll find something worth celebrating about the Northwest Bergen region! There’s a lot to love around here, and you don’t have to look very hard to find it. T h e G i f t o f Ho p e WITH PAULETTE LAURENZI AND THE SPRING LAKE HOPE FOUNDATION
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER K. MURRAY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SPRING LAKE HOPE FOUNDATION
14
G IV IN G BAC K | LO CAL SE RVICE S
In her 21st year as a successful corporate banker, Paulette Laurenzi’s life took a sudden turn. With her father ill and the birth of her son, she knew a major change was in store for herself and her family. Shifting focus, she became a toy retailer, and Spring Lake Toys was born. From the beginning, Spring Lake Toys was not just any toy retailer. Paulette had a vision of purpose for her toys. She started by giving away toys to hospitals. At one particularly inspirational visit, Paulette witnessed a miracle of sorts while giving wrapped toys to a sweet little girl with cancer. The doctor whispered that it would be unlikely that she’d be able to go home for Christmas. The gift of the toys lifted her spirits so much that she did get home for Christmas with her family. Witnessing small miracles like that helped Paulette define her mission: she wasn’t just selling toys, she was going to bring joy and hope to children with serious illnesses.
FROM TOYS TO A FOUNDATION
“I changed the name to Spring Lake Toys Foundation,” Laurenzi shared, “and within several months I had our first gala.” With that, the foundation was fully launched. “In 2016, our mission was 99% toys. We gave toys to lift the spirits of children with serious and rare illnesses. Then I added a medical component - just 1% of what we did at that time was to help pay for medical expenses not covered by insurance. So, that is how we started.” As time passed, the mission of the foundation evolved. “There are so many things that are not covered by insurance,” Paulette explained, “so, we started to do so much more on the medical side.” The foundation began to provide different therapies including elective therapies not covered by insurance, like stem cell therapy. They also covered additional OT and PT to help make a child healthier. Soon, the foundation provided adaptable strollers and wheelchairs, followed by adaptable car seats and tricycles. Big things continued with the funding of mechanical lifts.
BRINGING HOPE
“We heard about a girl who literally had to stay in her basement because there was no way to get her to the main level,” said Paulette. “Her nurse could not carry her, so she was in the basement with the nurse without amenities.” Paulette reached out to NJ-based Able-Care to create a solution. “Now, when she gets off the bus she can wheel onto a mechanical lift, which is kind of like a little mini elevator to the main level. We installed a cement sidewalk so that she can wheel into the house to access her kitchen, her bedroom, her bathroom, and all the amenities that she needs are right there for her.” This incredible moment led to the provision of more mechanical lifts for seriously ill children with Able-Care. They then helped fund handicapped vans. Some projects are funded by the Spring Lake Hope Foundation, some with the help of other charities. They also partner with the state of New Jersey to secure grants and loans.
THE SANTUCCI FAMILY
The foundation was introduced to a very special family this past year– the Santucci family from Fair Lawn. Three of the four Santucci children suffer from a rare genetic disorder called Leukodystrophy. The foundation helped provide a mechanical lift and an accessible van for the family. “On one of my visits to see the family, the Mom explained that she couldn’t get her son into the kitchen.” Paulette continued. “The hallways were so narrow that she couldn’t wheel him in. They couldn’t carry him. It was just so heartbreaking.” Paulette knew the foundation could help make their home accessible. Soon, a home renovation was funded. Over 25 companies donated materials and labor. With these contributions, and the money the foundation raised, they finished the project together. “Pietro Barberi and Frank Forcino of GTL Construction donated their time and labor. They were wonderful. I’m so grateful to them to help seamlessly put this all together.” CONTINUED >

THE AZZOLINA/RAGAZZO FAMILY
Recently, the foundation partnered with the state of New Jersey to help a family in Maywood. This wonderful family has twin boys, Geo and Dominic, who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy another rare illness. The boys are becoming wheelchair dependent as they age. The foundation stepped in to provide a mechanical lift and a handicap van to help the family.
A NEW NAME FOR THE FOUNDATION
This year, a large project for the foundation is taking place in Middletown, NY, followed by one in Dumont, New Jersey for 2024. The foundation was clearly evolving, and its name needed to, also. It wasn’t about toys - it was about giving hope. The Spring Lake Toy Foundation became the Spring Lake Hope Foundation. In 2016, the foundation was 99% toys and 1% medical. Today, the foundation is 99% medical and 1% toys. They are growing regionally with recent projects helping families in New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio.
A MISSION OF MANY
“Board members play a huge role,” says Paulette, “like honorary Board Advisor, Mike Fratello.” Fratello is one of the highest winning basketball coaches in the US and the recipient of the MBA Lifetime Achievement Award. He was able to help with a donation when an Ohio family reached out to the foundation through social media. The Board of Advisors for the Spring Lake Hope Foundation is growing as well. It’s now a larger strategic and philanthropic board. Each advisor and member is instrumental to the foundation’s success. “Salvator Frassetto and I started this board with nothing, and now we have over 30 members,” shares Paulette. “Sal is the chairman of Saddleback Real Estate Developers and chairman of the Board of Advisors at the foundation. He has been a wonderful asset. I always say, ‘Sal, I could never do all this without you’.”

FUNDRAISING IS KEY
The foundation has had seven annual galas, so far. They sell out, which has created additional events, like their first golf outing. They are looking forward to their “Evening in Italy” event on April 24th, 2024 at the Indian Trail Club in Franklin Lakes. So, why is it named Spring Lake? Paulette explains, “Back in the day, Spring Lake was my favorite beach town! When I started Spring Lake Toys, our first toy customers were in Spring Lake. We kept the name because it is now recognized. We’re actually headquartered here in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.
BRINGING HOPE
The Bergen County-based foundation is truly bringing hope to so many families, and Paulette could not be more thrilled with the impact they are making. “I just love all these families. It means a lot to me to be growing and helping more and more families. I’m blessed with a whole community around me. It takes a village. Like, Inserra Supermarkets. They’ve been instrumental in helping us bring hope from the beginning, through support and sponsoring galas.” “Our two boards and volunteers are amazing. I probably manage over 85 people right now, and every one of them is amazing. I couldn’t do this without my treasurer, Karen Rutherford. She is so instrumental in what we do. The whole community around me shares the same vision and passion as me, and it’s wonderful.” With this incredible team, the foundation is bringing hope. “We’re helping so many children and the families are so grateful. We’re changing people’s lives. We’re giving hope to people - that’s really what we are doing.” *If you are inspired and also wish to help bring hope, you can find out about volunteer opportunities, upcoming events, and how to make a donation on the Foundation’s website. springlakehope.org

EXPLORING THE WORLD OF MODEL RAILROADING WITH THE GARDEN STATE MODEL RAILWAY CLUB

Hundreds of different models– buildings, trees, cars, people, and more– lie in wait behind the door, but none of them can compare to the model trains that the club runs, and the dedicated hobbyists who make it all happen. Ron Bassani, the current president of the Garden State Model Railway Club, has been in this world since his childhood. “So many of our members, especially our senior members, had Lionel Trains in our family or our household as children, and that included myself,” he said. “My older brother and uncle had Lionel Trains, and so my first introduction into model railroading was playing with them. Later on in life, I used to buy models for myself, and I would run my trains in my basement. Joe Rizzo told
well become a member!’” Bassani soon climbed the ranks to become vice president, and later president, of the club. The Garden State Model Railway Club has come a long way since its founding in a Paterson garage in the early 1950s. It’s now one of the leading model railway clubs in the state. “There’s a tremendous rich history of railroading in Northern New Jersey, which is one of the reasons I think we’re so successful,” Bassani said. The club currently boasts over fifty members, some as young as fifth grade and others in their eighties, with many of the members under the age of thirty. “The key to survival for any club is bringing in youth,” Bassani said. “We have been very successful at bringing in the next generation.” CONTINUED >

Visitors young and old find themselves delighted by the events the club runs throughout the year. Their annual Model Railway Show, currently in its 65th year, draws many “repeat customers,” according to Bassani, who come back year after year. With play areas for children and a space for attendees to actually run the model trains, the club’s activities and detailed miniature layout can bring out the wonder in anyone. Bassani noted how certain parts of the layout, which depicts the location and operations of the railroads of North Jersey during the transitional era of the 1950s, stand out to visitors. “One of the iconic things we have in our current layout is a scratch-built miniature of the Jersey City Terminal that exists today… It used to be a major railroad hub. Everybody comes through the door and says ‘Hey, I know that!’ Most people are very impressed with the level of detail, they’re just in awe.”

“VISITORS YOUNG AND OLD FIND THEMSELVES DELIGHTED BY THE EVENTS THE CLUB RUNS.” With over a dozen different specialties that go into crafting a model railroad and decades of history and knowledge to soak up, there’s more to learn about the Garden State Model Railway Club than can be put into words, but Ron Bassani said it best. “It’s really one of those things that you almost have to see with your own eyes to gain a true appreciation of, but there’s also a social aspect to it. We meet with great people who have common interests, and spend good, quality time together.” The club’s open houses will continue to run into spring, taking place on March 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th, and April 6th and 7th. On March 3rd, they’ll also run a new open house for anyone who has a model train with digital command control that they want to run on the club’s layout. Whether you’re a seasoned train enthusiast or a curious novice, you won’t want to miss the chance to come pay a visit! gsmrrclub.org

Andrea Mistretta’s Colorful Life THE “QUEEN OF MARDI GRAS POSTERS” WILL ALWAYS CALL WALDWICK HOME.
Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter Private commission
Andrea Mistretta Andrea Mistretta’s artistic journey began in her parents’ screen printing shop in Waldwick, surrounded by the soothing sounds of jazz and big band music. Her exposure to the world of art and musicians like Louis Prima laid the foundation for a remarkable career that has spanned several decades. The self-taught artist began drawing at the age of three and worked in her parents’ shop throughout her teenage years. After high school, she studied Historic Period Dress at the Traphagen School of Design in New York City and followed her passion for fashion illustration and graphic design, and wherever else life has serendipitously taken her since. The vivacious energy Andrea exudes mirrors her art; dressed in a fluorescent pink blouse and surrounded by the vibrant colors of her studio, located on White’s Pond in Waldwick, Mistretta talks about how her childhood resonated with the spirit of New Orleans, the “Birthplace of Jazz.” She has said, “The color of Mardi Gras was something I needed for my spirit.” Andrea strongly believes in the therapeutic power of art. She mentions that she “felt the weirdness the winter months brought, back when no one else talked about it.” Balanced light, light therapy, and full-spectrum colors “give a chance for the endorphins to open up again.” Color psychology, the study of the ways in which color shapes human emotions, behavior, and perceptions, holds a significant place in Andrea’s interests and artwork. Studies have suggested that

brighter colors, like those in Mistretta’s pieces, can elevate dopamine levels, especially during the low-energy, depressing winter months when days are shorter and our exposure to natural colors is limited. While she had never been to New Orleans to experience Mardi Gras before her first poster, the unique energy of the “Big Easy” flowed through her veins, eventually spilling onto canvases. Like her paintbrush, Andrea’s life has gone with the flow and has landed her in some brilliant places. While involved with a community access television studio at Bergen Community College in the early ‘80s, she met her husband, photographer turned videographer turned FAA licensed drone photo/video remote pilot, Perry Quaranta. “Perry and I have similarities in that we have had passions for what we do since we were children, throughout our lives and into ever-evolving futures.” In 1985, Mistretta’s friend, Karen, visited New Orleans and brought along a photo of one of Andrea’s paintings, Mercredi Des Cendre. Karen popped into the infamous Bergen Galleries on Royal Street and met gallerist and socialite Margarita Bergen, who immediately wanted to turn the painting into a poster. Andrea explains, “She was at the right place at the right time. The stars were in the right position.” Margarita flew to New York City and threw Andrea a NOLA-style reception, and the next day, Andrea found herself in Margarita’s apartment in New Orleans signing posters. She felt like “Dorothy in Kansas.” 25,000 copies of Mercredi Des Cendre were sold and marked the beginning of a lifelong connection with the city. Mistretta’s art, particularly her annual Mardi Gras posters, has become synonymous with the festive spirit of New Orleans during the festival season. She describes her 2024 poster as “a little darker than usual.” Her thirty-ninth is titled Mardi Gras Essence, and showcases the “Crown Mask” she recently designed for Tijon Perfumery’s Parfum de Mardi Gras packaging. Combined with the continuity of the face and the background featuring Royal Street, she has created yet another stunning contemporary masterpiece.

Mistretta’s versatility knows no bounds. As she discusses her various accomplishments and adventures, it is evident that there’s nothing she either hasn’t already done or cannot do. In addition to being a self-taught artist, calligrapher, illustrator, and graphic designer, Andrea has explored a diverse range of creative ventures. Her endeavors encompass everything from crafting coloring books and puzzles to collaborating with RoseArt and delving into the world of hot sauce. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Andrea has dedicated herself to philanthropy, actively supporting organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Musicians’ Village and the American Cancer Society, among many others. As Mardi Gras Day approaches on February 13, Valentine’s Eve, Mistretta’s art continues to capture the essence of life in vibrant visual stories. In her 39th year of creating Mardi Gras posters, Andrea remains immersed in the spirit of New Orleans; a city she describes as “the best place for expression,” and a “hotbed for cultural and historical art.” CONTINUED >

In recognition of her contributions, Mistretta was conferred with Honorary Citizenship by Mayor Sidney Barthelemy for promoting a positive image of New Orleans Mardi Gras. When asked if she’ll ever relocate to New Orleans, Andrea says “snowbirding” is in her dreams, perhaps even just for the Festival Season, but her heart is in Waldwick. She loves her Bergen County hometown so much, you’ll find her sitting at Waldwick High School graduations year after year, even when she doesn’t know anyone graduating. Alongside her husband, Perry, and their shared passion for art and life, Mistretta’s own journey is a celebration of creativity, community and the jubilant, magical spirit of Mardi Gras.
