I don’t know about you, but this time of year, I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy a distraction from the cold winter months. While we teeter between the chill of January and the anticipation of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. Our February issue not only celebrates the month of love, but it is also when we look to inspire ourselves through the arts. bergenPAC perfectly suits both themes. Check out the story on the revitalization of the Englewood theater and reserve tickets for an upcoming show. Its early 20th-century charm has been painstakingly restored (with love), and its stage welcomes renowned artists from around the world. It is also home to a unique performing arts education program that truly has something for everyone. We explore a different type of art education on a visit to One River School of Art and Design in Allendale, where kids and adults can express themselves with unique, hands-on art classes that help to ignite a passion for the creative arts. Maybe your idea of the perfect Valentine’s date is a cozy evening at home. If so, don’t forget the flowers! Wyckoff Florist and Gifts and Creations by Fran Flowers & More will show you what’s trending in fresh floral arrangements. Show your love and support to our community’s visionaries, artists, and entrepreneurs. Patronizing local businesses and organizations builds strength within our communities. So please enjoy the stories within these pages and visit the shops, restaurants, and salons within northwest Bergen County. We hope that we can inspire you to love it here just a bit more than you did before. Happy February! KRIS PEPPER, EDITOR @NORTHWESTBERGENLIFESTYLE

RIVER SCHOOL allendale
One River School has one mission: to transform art education. “Our curriculum never repeats, but we have lots of repeat students,” says Director Corianne Darienzo. “We have students who started with us in 2017 and are still here, six years later.” She attributes this to One River’s dynamic atmosphere that fosters continual learning and growth. “I’ve had parents tell me this is the only activity their kid sticks with!” Since its opening in Allendale in 2017, One River School has provided far more than fine art instruction to the surrounding community. Through the school’s classes, exhibitions, and summer camps, One River has become a local gathering space and outlet for creative expression. “Our classes are therapeutic, especially for the adult students,” Darienzo says. “It’s a free space to let your mind go.” One River offers art classes for students ranging from Pre-K to adults. For the youngest students, it’s a hands-on introduction to creating art in a variety of media. For tweens and teens, courses spark inspiration and encourage students to push the boundaries of their artistic comfort zones. While One River offers art instruction all year, summer camps are the most popular choice for kids and teens. Each week-long camp session has a distinct theme and during that session, students create art incorporating that theme. CONTINUED >

Teens who are planning on pursuing fine art in college can also take portfolio development courses where One River instructors, professional artists working in their chosen fields, provide constructive feedback and guidance that enables students to optimize their portfolios and become stronger applicants. In the past five years, One River students have been accepted to RISD, SCAD, SVA, and other selective art colleges. For adults, classes at One River are a lot of things. They’re a place to explore new media and techniques. They’re a space to meet other artists and collaborate. And for a lot of adult students, they’re an opportunity to get back into hobbies they once loved and might have lost touch with. Unlike many traditional art programs, all of One River’s courses are based on contemporary artists. A few recently featured artists include Osamu Kobayashi, JJ Manford, and Michael Berryhill. Each five-week course begins with a history lesson about the featured artist, then dives into hands-on projects incorporating the media and techniques for which that artist is best known. Classes and workshops strongly emphasize specific techniques associated with the focus artist, adding new skills to students’ creative toolkits they can use in future works. Featured artists’ work is also exhibited in One River’s gallery space, giving students and visitors the opportunity to learn more about the artist and their work. All of One River’s instructors are professional artists who bring years of experience and insight into the studio. They work closely with the internal education department to write course curricula that both supports and challenges every student. “It’s a great release for students,” Darienzo says. “Our classes and workshops are a safe place for the kids to express themselves.” Outside One River’s class schedule, the school hosts local artists for lectures and discussions. These include lectures featuring art professors from local schools and colleges. For One River, featuring local artists and professors is a key part of community engagement—and that includes featuring local student artists. One recent exhibition featured artwork by Paramus High School’s AP art students, and twice each year, One River hosts a student show featuring works by their own students. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your design skills, try something new, introduce your child to the visual arts, or host an event, One River School has all your art-related needs covered.

b e r g e n PAC JUST THE TICKET--PERFORMING ARTS WITH HEART
ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BERGENPAC
The performing arts are back--and you don’t have to travel across the Hudson to access world-class entertainment. The Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC) is an easy drive down Route 4 to Englewood and features an expansive repertoire of programs to suit any age and preference. Its majestic space was recently restored thanks to an ongoing $15m capital campaign. Alex Diaz, Executive Director, says, “The theater was built in 1926 as a vaudeville house, and we were intentional on meticulously restoring the craftsmanship of this majestic space to its past grandeur. We’ve installed new lighting, sound, carpet, and seats and expanded the lobby. Now we have three bars where guests can relax while waiting for

a show. People look around and take it all in—these are the things that make the experience here incredible.” Phase Two of the campaign will include improvements to the marquis, façade, and additional technical elements. Fundraising is ongoing to reach the total $15m campaign goal. Valerie Huttle, Chair of the bergenPAC board adds, “it’s an iconic building, so it was essential to keep the original ambiance, oculus, and paint colors. We’ve just rejuvenated it, and it looks fabulous.” Alex was hired in 2010 as the Director of Education and was selected as the Executive Director in 2022. “Working at a nonprofit, you wear multiple hats,” he says. “I love every aspect of my job here—from being on stage to producing shows to working with the development office and meeting new people.”
The theater is not only known for outstanding performances, but it has also become a resource for cultural and performing arts education. In 2005, a strategic plan was put into place to develop a solid educational program to expand opportunities for kids and adults to explore dance, theater, music, etc., with the belief that a cultural center should provide access to educational programs as well as performances. Along with every other cultural venue, bergenPAC took a big hit during the pandemic. Alex explored every opportunity to keep the facility running during that time, including developing a full slate of virtual classes. “Students could take any class they wanted. It was important to provide stability and normalcy for them during that time. The arts are an outlet for kids.” They continue to offer virtual classes in voice, acting, and monolog coaching, to name a few.

Valerie adds, “we also have wonderful programs for kids with disabilities. The arts are a great social outlet. Performing gives a shy, withdrawn child an opportunity to shine. Kids with disabilities need a place to dance and sing, and we’ve seen excellent results with non-verbal children with autism. The impact of music positively affects them. Ali Stoker (of Ridgewood) was the first actress to win a Tony in a wheelchair. That type of success creates a role model for kids with disabilities. It’s more than therapy. Kids realize that they have special abilities throughout these programs.”

The bergenPAC Performing Arts School supports kids in all 70 Bergen County towns. Their educational programs are tuition-based, but no one is turned away due to their inability to pay. “We have a robust class schedule as well as outreach programs in public and private schools and theater and dance residencies,” says Alex. Partnering with the FBI and other community-minded businesses, bergenPAC presented opioid-prevention programs. They also presented a successful social justice program. Both were thought-provoking and impactful

for students. “Kids need outlets to express themselves. They know they have a safe space and a home with us,” says Alex. One of bergenPAC’s success stories is Rachel Zegler, who was first cast in the theater’s production of Les Mis and then went on to star as Maria in their production of Westside Story. Rachel was later awarded the starring role in the Steven Spielberg remake of the iconic film. Right down the street at One Depot Square, bergenPAC’s education facility is located in the legendary Tony Bennett recording studio. After serving as a professional studio for scores of celebrities over the years, it now houses a recording studio, dance studio, four private music studios, and one early childhood studio for the bergenPAC Performing Arts School. “It just oozes with musicality,” says Alex. bergenPAC’s contributions to the county and the state of New Jersey can’t go unnoticed. “It’s a hidden jewel,” says Valerie. “Now,
with our restoration well underway and the stellar artists who perform here, we will continue to be a major venue in the state. The added bonus is that it’s a boon to downtown Englewood’s local restaurants, florists, and retail shops.” Go online and start browsing for tickets for your next evening out. Upcoming shows include: Dirty Deeds – The AC/DC Experience, Macy Gray, William Shatner and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Paddington Gets In a Jam, Engelbert Humperdinck, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Sara Evans, America, The Robert Cray Band, KC and the Sunshine Band, Patti Lupone, and Jay Leno. Val sums it all up: “We’re making bergenPAC a destination. You don’t have to cross the river to get a cultural experience. Come see our legends on stage!” bergenpac.org
