Serving Up Summer!

August 2022 PUBLISHER

Marc Schwartz | marc.schwartz@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Kris Pepper | kris.pepper@citylifestyle.com

For most of us, the “dog days” of summer evoke those long, hot weeks when our physical activity slows down, and our soft serve’s melting rate speeds up. The month of August also earmarks our Kids issue. This year, our feature articles hone in on two charitable organizations: The first is the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, which supports children with cancer and their families throughout the state of New Jersey. Thanks to ECF, affected families receive generous outpourings of emotional, spiritual, and financial support while navigating a difficult diagnosis. We spoke to Inessa Rome, Northern Regional Director, who shared how ECF helps families navigate a devastating diagnosis with compassion and dignity. Our other articles include some groundbreaking news from Volvo Cars, which is doing its part to keep sustainability and environmental awareness at the forefront by building a new LEED-certified Technical and Training Center on its Mahwah campus. The new school year’s right around the corner! Learn how to get your child started off on the right foot with Primrose of Paramus. Their tried-and-true curriculum has been a proven success in over 450 schools across the country. We’re rounding out this issue with a great summer read by Bergen County resident, Jen Maxfield. Jen shares her experiences of revisiting fascinating interview subjects “after the story” and how these interviews have impacted her own life. Check out Lucy Probert’s interview with the journalist and find out about her new book, More After the Break: A Reporter Returns to Ten Unforgettable News Stories. On behalf of the team at Northwest Bergen Lifestyle, here’s wishing you a happy August filled with sun, sand, and a little soft serve! KRIS PEPPER, EDITOR @NORTHWESTBERGENLIFESTYLE

JEN MA XFIELD Journalist and Storyteller As an Emmy-winning reporter and news anchor, Jen Maxfield estimates she has interviewed over 10,000 people for thousands of news events for ABC and NBC New York. In her recently published book More After the Break: A Reporter Returns to Ten Unforgettable News Stories, Bergen County resident Maxfield revisits interview subjects whose transformative experiences have impacted her life. "I think about many of the people whose living rooms I have sat in, wondering what happened to them after I helped them tell their stories," she says. A native of Tenafly, Maxfield remains in Bergen County with her husband Scott Ostfeld and their three children. Since 2015, she has been an adjunct professor at her alma mater Columbia Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. She spoke with us about the importance of local news in a non-stop news cycle, her optimism for the next generation of journalists.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO WRITE THIS BOOK? I have always felt a strong connection to the people I interview. In many cases, I'm with them on what might be the worst day of their lives, and that has left a lasting impression on me. During the COVID pandemic, I started searching for people from my news past to see what happened to them. Seeing how engaged and motivated they were to speak with me again about some difficult issues was rewarding.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE FUTURE OF JOURNALISM AS A PROFESSOR AT COLUMBIA? My students are very motivated to investigate and find stories. So much of what we do at Columbia is using the city as our classroom. We go in the subway or out on the streets covering a snowstorm or a fire. And as much as I teach them, I have learned a lot from them because they're coming at things with a fresh perspective. It's interesting to see how they approach stories differently as a generation raised with cameras and social media. It's also rewarding to teach a student and then write her a recommendation for her first on-air job. I love when they graduate from being my students to becoming my colleagues.

WHY IS LOCAL NEWS SO IMPORTANT TO VIEWERS? I think local news is more important now than ever because, unlike what's happening thousands of miles away, these stories impact us daily. For example, are your roads being plowed in the winter? How much funding will your school get this year? All of that is local. Local news reporters live in the communities we report on, so the stories also affect us personally, like Superstorm Sandy. While my team and I covered it, we also worried that our own homes might have been damaged and wondered if our families had power. We're not just flying in for a day or two to cover a story and then leaving. This is where we live.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OF YOUR JOB? I think one of my strengths as a reporter is that I'm an empathetic person. I always try to put myself in other people's shoes and understand how it must be for them. That has gotten more difficult after having my own children. Now, I understand on a different level what some of these parents have gone through. While I can't get so drawn into a story that I can't do my job, I think one of the reasons I've connected with people on a deeper level through the years is because I am willing to open up to them emotionally during the worst circumstances. I think that has made me a better storyteller. Jenmaxfield.com

Volvo's Proposed New Technical and Training Facility

Volvo Cars is expanding its footprint in New Jersey to prepare for a future selling only electric vehicles by building a new technical and training facility and installing 50 EV chargers, at the company’s headquarters in Mahwah. Executives, employees, and local dignitaries gathered to break ground at the future site of the Volvo Car Americas Technical and Training Center. The new facility will enable the company to better support its network of retailers and their service technicians in the US, Canada, Mexico, and South America. It is scheduled to open in March 2023. Representative Josh Gottheimer (NJ 5th District), Mahwah mayor James Wysocki and Anders Gustafsson, Senior Vice President Americas and President and CEO, Volvo Car USA, spoke to attendees gathered at the site to mark the occasion. The Volvo Car Americas Technical and Training Center will house a multi-vehicle workshop and classrooms where service technicians will learn the latest diagnostic and service techniques for all Volvo cars, including plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles.

In alignment with the company’s sustainability focus, the building is designed to be LEED Gold certified. It will feature a 15-kW solar panel system, high-efficiency HVAC, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a green building certification program used worldwide. It provides a framework for healthy, efficient, carbon, and cost-saving green buildings. The Volvo Cars Americas headquarters building, located within the same campus, is also LEED Gold certified. In addition, Volvo Cars is installing 50 electric vehicle charging stations on the 20-acre property. This will serve the increasing number of employees and visitors driving plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles. The company’s goal is to eventually make the chargers available to the public, in line with its electrification ambitions. In 2020, Volvo relocated to Mahwah, where it currently employs about 340 people. “We are so proud to be expanding our Volvo Car Americas footprint in Mahwah,” said Gustafsson. “As we continue down the CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . path to become the fastest transformer in the industry, this beautiful new facility anchored around sustainability will further train and educate our retailers and service technicians from across the region on our electrified future.” “To make sure North Jersey is ready to tackle future energy needs, I’ve been laser-focused on setting up access to clean, renewable energy systems, as well as a reliable and efficient EV charging infrastructure. That’s why I fought to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill and bring thousands of EV chargers to Jersey, and why I’m excited to help Volvo Cars break ground on fifty new EV chargers and a new technical training facility,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer. “With this new investment in North Jersey, hundreds of jobs will be created in our community over the coming years, helping Jersey residents and our local economy. It will make North Jersey the center of Volvo’s EV training for the entire Western Hemisphere.” Mahwah mayor, James Wysocki, said, “We recently welcomed Volvo Cars to Mahwah and couldn’t ask for a better addition to the community. The jobs and technology this new technical and training center will hold mean great things to come for our town.” volvocars.com

Primrose of Paramus -

Excellence in Early Childhood Education It’s never too early to start your child on a path to academic success.

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | EDUCATI ON

Before Rocco Varma and his wife Nisha had a child, they knew they wanted to spend as much time as possible with him or her. So, they became franchisees of a Primrose School in Florham Park. “We actually raised our son Jaiden, now 6 years old, through Primrose’s entire school system,” says Rocco. After experiencing all that Primrose had to offer their own child, and wanting to provide this same opportunity for other children, they opened up three other New Jersey locations – one in West Orange, one in Paramus and one in Morristown. They also have two more locations in Pennsylvania. Founded almost 40 years ago, Primrose Schools are nationally accredited early education and care schools serving infants through kindergarten. Today, there are over 450 schools across the United States. “We have state-of-the-art fully educational facilities with every single age group in separate classrooms,” he says. “They’re warm and welcoming – we want our students and parents to feel like it’s their second home.” Teachers are trained by VARMAEDGE, an education group, and Primrose, explains Rocco, and they also have teaching experience and/or are fully certified and have educational degrees. “They have to go through about 80 hours of in person and online training where they get acclimated to our curriculum, our processes and our procedures. After that, there are continuous assessments for the teachers to make sure they’re delivering what our students need.” He adds, “We are pioneers in education. Primrose develops its own curriculum - we don’t source it or purchase it.” Primrose Schools are accredited by Cognia (previously AdvancED®), a quality-improvement enhancement network made up of the largest community of education professionals in the world. It’s the highest level an early learning school can receive. The basis of its curriculum is an exclusive, time-tested Balanced Learning® approach which is based on the latest research in early

childhood education. Every toy, book, and lesson plan is purposefully chosen to build character, school readiness and life skills. Starting in preschool, students are introduced to technology with iPads. Not only are children’s mind’s nourished, but so are their bodies. “Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided and everything is organically sourced and made by our in-house chef,” says Rocco. Health and safety are of utmost importance. He says all facilities are sanitized on an hourly basis and cleaned on a daily basis. They’re also completely secure. “There is no entry from the outside. Only students, parents and staff have access.” For older children, Primrose also provides after-school care with homework

help for children aged 5 through 12 and a Summer Adventure Club for kids from kindergarten through 5th grade. Every program offered allows parents to pursue their own professional careers. Another key aspect that makes Primrose Schools stand out is their involvement and support of their local communities. “We do an annual event called the Spring Fling, where we raise funds for a nonprofit, be it a food pantry in Florham Park or a cancer organization in Paramus,” says Rocco. “Every single location finds a charity to partner with, and then all the funds that are raised through these events go to them.” In order to become a franchisee, he had to go through several hours of onsite and in-person training from learning how

the processes work to how the education curriculum works. “We are not educators,” he says. “Primrose franchises with business entrepreneurs because they want to separate the educational aspect from the business aspect.” Rocco, who lives in Essex County, was born and raised in India before moving to the United States at the age of 17, was already an entrepreneur at age 20. After finding success in real estate and retail, he founded VARMA RE DEVELOPMENT, which he operates today alongside his Primrose Schools franchises. The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF) provides the invaluable service of providing New Jersey families a place to turn when facing the crisis of a pediatric cancer diagnosis—all free of charge. The Foundation serves families throughout the state of New Jersey. Their northeast office in Midland Park serves Bergen, Sussex, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic counties, offering counseling, material assistance, and emergency financial aid for families with children under 18 with a cancer diagnosis. "We have connections with local hospitals, who refer us to affected families. Our caseworkers go out and do a full assessment," says Caitlin Yanowitz, LCSW Caseworker. "They can see the needs and begin counseling and offering various resources. For example, ECF provides monthly groceries, gift cards for food and clothing, and emergency assistance to help with bills. Sometimes there is a direct request from a family in need. "We've gotten tires and refrigerators donated. We were even able to get one family a much-needed roof!" "What sets us apart is our counseling piece," says Caitlin. "Each caseworker is assigned to a family. We work with them based on their schedule, even on evenings and weekends if necessary. We try to be very flexible to meet the family's needs." Inessa Rome, Northern Regional Director, states, "We don't receive government funding. Instead, we do all this through events, community fundraising, and the generosity of private donors, so it's vital to spread the word of the ECF so that we can keep doing this." Over 82 cents per dollar raised goes directly to the families in need. Various church groups and Girl Scout troops have joined the mission by organizing collections like food and toydrives throughout the year. "We compile a wish list during the holidays," says Inessa, "and we make a point of addressing the family's needs as a whole. We make sure that siblings and parents are not overlooked." By sending a questionnaire to the family, ECF enlists the help of generous donors to ensure that the family receives what they want and need. "Each child receives 2-3 gifts—exactly what they want," says Inessa. "We have amazing support from our donors." Volunteer Linda Stone is beginning her second year working with ECF. "We all wear different hats," she says. "Handling the phones, planning events, and soliciting donors. It's exciting and very worthwhile."

Teams of volunteers put together customized bags of groceries for each family monthly, and volunteer drivers make the deliveries. "You have to care about the goal of the organization. As a parent, the thought of your child being ill is incomprehensible. I like the philosophy of working with the family as a whole. I feel that my time here has value," says Linda. The organization relies on people like Linda to help with day-to-day tasks. During Covid, they had a strong turnout of college students who volunteered to help. Children with cancer tend to miss many landmark childhood experiences. The staff and volunteers at ECF feel privileged to have longstanding relationships with their clients and cherish the opportunities to celebrate life's victories alongside them. "We stay with these families a long time," says Caitlin. "I've attended many graduations and birthday parties. It's nice to see families be able to enjoy good times. We support them for as long as needed—throughout both relapses and remissions. You really can't let go of them."

One child named Camilla came from a single-parent family, living with her dad and two brothers. After successful treatment and remission, she was able to pursue her talent for art by having several pieces auctioned off at last year's ECF fundraiser. "In addition, says Inessa, "she was later commissioned to create artwork for the Montclair library. It was amazing to see her mature from a shy child to a strong, well-spoken young woman." ECF always looks for volunteers and community support for their fundraisers and events. Consider picking up an extra bag of groceries, gas cards, grocery store cards, or gift cards to Target or Marshall's. They welcome "drop-offs" at their office; please call first at 201-612-8118. emmanuelcancer.org
