Inspirational Men in our Community
EDITOR
Happy Father's Day! An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle, or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a significant impact on us at one time or another. Whether it is someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, we are inspired by their greatness and recognize the impact these role models make in our lives. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community and the world at large. We are honored to feature Harold Green, a 77-year-old Wyckoff resident and Ironman whose incredible accomplishments lie in the pages ahead. Next up is the story of Douglas A. Struyk, the President and CEO of Christian Health. One of Doug's top priorities is establishing a culture of appreciation and service excellence while recognizing co-workers who exceed expectations. Those individuals who Christian Health serves are the beneficiaries of Doug's service and leadership. Our Editor, Kris Pepper, recently interviewed Gary Bettman, the Commissioner of the National Hockey League since 1993. So if you're interested in learning more about our very own Northwest Bergen resident, take your five minutes in the penalty box and read some of the questions posed like, "can Gary skate?" To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact you are making, and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it. Indeed for me, the man who inspired me was my father. He taught me so many things in life; however, it can all be summed up with four simple words that I do my best to live by every day -- Do the Right Thing. We wish all the dads in Northwest Bergen and beyond a very Happy Father's Day.

NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman, has championed the sport of hockey since his tenure began in 1993. When he assumed office, Gary went to work increasing the league’s footprint in the U.S. At the time, there were NHL clubs in 24 U.S. markets. The league now consists of 32 teams, and is considered the premier professional ice hockey league in the world. Gary was named Sports Executive of the Year by The Sports Business Journal in 2014 and he was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. He is also an honored member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder Category. He is currently the longest-serving active commissioner in professional sports. We had the opportunity to sit down with the Saddle River resident and get his unique perspective on the great sport of hockey.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY LIVED IN NORTHERN NEW JERSEY? I grew up in Queens and later moved to Huntington, Long Island. Before moving to Saddle River in 1995, we were in Rockland County, New York. My wife, Shelli, and I have three grown children who live locally: Lauren, Jordan, and Brittany, and I have six grandchildren.
FUN FACT: A recent highlight of Gary’s “grandfatherhood” was the opportunity to watch his grandson, Matthew, in the NJSIAA Public B boys ice hockey state championship on March 7 at Prudential Center. Matthew was part of the Northern Highlands high school team that brought home the title!
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A SPORTS FAN? Growing up, I was always a fan of all the different sports. I would use my G.O. card to watch Ranger games at Madison Square Garden. Back in the ‘60s, you could get a student “general organization” membership card to attend games very inexpensively. I’d pack my lunch and go whenever I could!
CAN YOU SKATE? When I was in college, my girlfriend (now wife, Shelli) taught me so that I could play intramural hockey.
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE NHL? I’m a lawyer by training. When I was 32, I got a job as general counsel for the NBA. I was there for 12 years before moving over to the NHL as its commissioner.

WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY FOR GARY BETTMAN? Running a sports league is equivalent to running a major entertainment company. We manage the game schedule, media, officials, licensing, sponsors, advertisers, and business partners. My responsibility is to make sure everything works together. For example, in the tech space, we have relationships with Apple, Amazon, SAP, and Verizon. We need to constantly develop ways to create valuable relationship opportunities for our business sponsors. My days consist of lots of meetings and phone calls. I deal with day-to-day issues like working on collective bargaining agreements, negotiating new media contracts, and promoting new initiatives. We’re busy operating 32 franchises playing in 1312 different season games throughout the U.S. and Canada. I try to attend a game in each arena annually; however, the past two years have been challenging due to COVID.
SPEAKING OF COVID, HOW IS THE NHL BOUNCING BACK?
running a major entertainment company.”
After the isolation of playing in empty arenas, we are now back to our regular, full schedule. The Canadian games have been an exceptional challenge because they didn’t permit spectators for a long time. Now, we’re coming back strong!
THE GAME OF HOCKEY STRIKES ME AS A PLATFORM FOR INTEGRITY, INCLUSION, AND POSITIVE VALUES. CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT THAT? Hockey enjoys the most incredible connection to fans of any sport out there. Our league takes great pride in the values of the game and strives to use our platform to stand for the “right thing,” teaching young people the lessons of team play, education, and hard work. We are happy to be back post-pandemic, delivering the excitement of the game to our fans. In 2017, the NHL and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) unveiled hockey’s Declaration of Principles, developed by stakeholders to advance policies and programs while inspiring fans, players, and communities to create the best hockey experience possible.
HOW DOES THE NHL GIVE BACK TO FANS AND THE COMMUNITY? The NHL management and players are involved in providing a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for everyone. Our league is involved in a wide array of diversity programs, environmental sustainability efforts, and food recovery programs. We also partner with the You Can Play Project, which works to ensure the safety and inclusion of all who participate in sports. Our players are very giving of themselves, and many have their own foundations as well. There are so many initiatives going on. All of the latest news can be found on thisishockey.org. We take great pride in the way clubs connect with the community, give back, and make a difference in people’s lives. It’s as important as anything else we do. nhl.com

As a young man, Christian Health’s President and CEO, Douglas A. Struyk, CPA, LNHA, never imagined that he would one day be at the helm of a major healthcare organization in northern New Jersey. Doug grew up in Wayne with his siblings and parents. His father was a college professor, and his mom was a pharmacist who later became a nurse. Upon graduating from Pace University with a BBA and MBA in public accounting, he began his career at Ernst and Whinney (now EY). He was asked to serve as an audit manager for Christian Health, a client of the firm. “I worked on audits in 1988 and 1989, and subsequently, the CEO offered me a position as CFO in 1990.” “The only healthcare background I had were those two audits and what I learned from my mother and my sister, who is also a nurse.” I developed a strong affinity for the organization, and I had the opportunity to understand what was needed to make Christian Health a better place. Spearheading new initiatives in the healthcare community was a divergent path from Ernst and Whinney. “I went into accounting knowing that it would expose me to many industries and professions,” says Doug. “The organization was growing quickly, and it was rewarding to bring my accounting skills and abilities to help navigate our growth.” A defining moment was when the State of New Jersey came to us and said they mistakenly over-reimbursed $1 million for Medicaid—and they wanted it back.” Doug’s financial background helped Christian Health prove the State wrong. “They actually owed us $1 million,” he laughs. Serving as the CEO of a major healthcare organization requires a keen awareness of the current trends and
legislation in healthcare. Doug currently chairs the governor's task force recommending legislation to improve the quality and safety of long-term care. He also completed a one-year term with New Jersey Hospital Association. It’s the first time the Association has selected a Chair who is not the CEO of an acute care hospital. Doug’s commitment to elevating mental health awareness is a strong focus for him and his team. “We are looking at the impact of the pandemic on mental health,” says Doug. “We’ve already been confronted with the physical impact. Now, we are seeing COVID’s effects on mental wellness, such as loss, isolation, and fear. One in five of us will experience a significant mental health episode at some point in our lives. People are comfortable talking about their high blood pressure, broken bones, or cardiac conditions, but how many are comfortable sharing their mental health status? We need to focus on helping people get to a better place.” The senior living industry also continues to evolve, and more options are available. “It is important to ask residents and clients what they want so that we can meet their expectations,” says Doug. Christian Health addresses this growing need with its newest retirement community, The Vista. “I’m proud of the services it provides,” he says. “The most common health issues in the older population are depression and loneliness,” says Doug. “Being a part of a vibrant senior community helps remove that risk and replaces it with socialization, independence, and freedom.” None of these initiatives would be possible without a dedicated staff and the solid interpersonal relationships

established at the organization over the years. “We’ve been through COVID, hurricanes, snowstorms, and tragedies together as a team,” Doug says. “It’s an honor when a client's family member stops me to say that they can rest easier at night knowing that our staff provides such great care for their loved one. Our unsung heroes at Christian Health deserve the credit.” Establishing a culture of appreciation and service excellence at Christian Health is one of Doug’s top priorities. Staff members are encouraged to recognize co-workers who

exceed expectations with a special app. The app notifies Doug, and in turn, Doug writes a thank you to the employee. “My daughters have seen me write the notes at home, and they’ve learned the power of a handwritten message,” he says. “I hope I imparted a healthy work ethic to our daughters as they observed how much I enjoy what I do.” “I always wonder--did my hard work enable me to enjoy my job? What is the secret to a long and satisfying life? Ask Harold Green. The 77-year-old moved from Suffern to Wyckoff last fall, but Harold is no stranger to northwest Bergen County. If you’re a member of the Wyckoff YMCA or into endurance sports, you may already know him. Harold grew up in Beacon, New York, about 60 miles north of New York City. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia and saw success in two different professions during his lifetime, teaching high school for 16 years before transitioning to a 30-year career in the apparel industry. “A neighbor of mine encouraged me to get into the garment industry,” says Harold. “I worked for a couple of companies and then decided I wanted to start my own business.” The pressure of leaving the security of an established business gave him pause, but Harold went on to establish a successful dress company located in New York’s garment district. “I started from scratch, borrowed money to get going, and paid it all back six months later,” he laughs. “Everyone was shocked.” Over the years, the garment industry changed as production moved out of the U.S. “I was a domestic manufacturer, and I didn’t have the funding to go overseas,” he says. “I had to close. I couldn’t compete anymore.” Harold went to work for another clothing company for ten years before they, too, closed their doors. “I decided to go back to teaching,” says Harold. “So, I got a job teaching high school biology and forensic science at Ramapo High School in Suffern. It was a tough but satisfying job.” When Harold’s wife, Janet, was diagnosed with cancer, Harold retired to care for her and help her achieve her lifelong wish to visit all 50 states.

“We were all over—St. Augustine, Florida; Acadia, Maine; and Burlington, Vermont,” he says. When they visited Lake Placid, Harold spotted signs for the renowned Ironman competition. “I mentioned to Janet that I would love to try it, and Janet told me to ‘go for it!’ She passed away a month later.” Harold had played team sports growing up but hadn’t attempted any endurance sports until later in life when he ran the New York City and Boston Marathons. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Harold registered for the Lake Placid Ironman consisting of a 2.4mile swim, 112-mile bike, and a full marathon of 26.2 miles. “I signed up and started training,” says Harold. “The best part was that I made great friends through the process. I met my friend, Paul, through the Racefaster training group in Ridgewood, led by Aidan Walsh (see the September, 2021 issue). Eventually, a group of my friends came to support me at my first Ironman race in 2015 at Lake Placid. “You can’t believe how great it is to have the guys come to cheer for you and then take you out for a beer after you’ve crossed the finish line!” Harold followed up the 2015 race with two more Ironman races in 2016. “I came in second in my age group in 2015,” says Harold.

“I could have been first, but I stopped mid-race at my hotel to use the bathroom. Then I changed my shirt and combed my hair before continuing the run. The guys didn’t recognize me wearing a different colored shirt. They couldn’t stop laughing!” COVID canceled his most recently scheduled Ironman competition and led Harold to determine that it is a good time to move on to other activities. “I’m fortunate that I made it this far, but now I’d like to do some different things,” he says. Harold notes that the highlight of his racing days was the people he met along the way. “I meet my friends every morning for coffee. Several years ago, a group of us (this Editor included) had the amazing experience of going on a cycling trip to northern Italy. That will go down as one of the most incredible memories of my life.” Harold enjoys being outdoors and is an avid reader. He exercises at the Y, works out with a strength-training coach, and spends time with his girlfriend, Karen. “The number one thing that keeps people alive is sociability. That’s the key,” he says. “It’s important to have a good sense of humor and the ability to laugh at yourself. Hold on tight to your circle of friends. Enjoy life, take trips, and smell the roses. I’m very fortunate to have been able to do that.”
