Happy Mother’s Day! Mother’s day is no longer just a recognition of “mom.” It’s also an opportunity to herald the contributions and achievements of women in our community and around the world who are making a difference. This month, Northwest Bergen Lifestyle celebrates the women in our lives who have raised us, taught us, and inspired us. We have some great stories for you this month. The first one was introduced by our own photographer, Sarah Flannery. She was visiting Crocker & Starr, a favorite winery in St. Helena, California, when she met Wyckoff’s own Evyn Cameron, head winemaker. Learn about Evyn’s journey from East Coast to West Coast and take in the gorgeous scenery of Napa Valley through Sarah’s stunning photos. Next, we visit with Cindy Bradley, a world-class trumpeter and instrumental music instructor in Franklin Lakes who has eight #1 Billboard Smooth Jazz singles. Along with her other achievements, Cindy was a Grammy Music Educator Award quarterfinalist in 2014. I also had the opportunity to catch up with Wyckoff’s Lauren Brzozowski, and let me tell you, catching up with this young lady is not an easy feat! A standout Ramapo track star, Lauren’s athletic career was rerouted by the pandemic. However, her big personality, commitment to hard work, and never-give-up attitude delivered her right where she needed to be--on the USA Bobsled Team! Finally, we’re adding a bit of history to the mix with our feature on The Hermitage in Ho-Ho-Kus. If you haven’t yet seen “Hamilton,” you can learn a revolutionary lesson or two from this local landmark. I hope all of our readers find time to relax and enjoy this issue. But first, make sure you have your Mother’s Day shopping wrapped up. And remember, shop local! Happy Mother’s Day!

Cindy Bradley A Class Act Trumpeter ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH FLANNERY PHOTOGRAPHY, DEVON CASS PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO DAVID CLARK, AND JIM CLARK From the time she was a young child, Cindy Bradley always had an interest in music. “My father was a selftaught organist,” says Cindy, “and I learned to read music by watching him play. In the fourth grade, we were allowed to join the band, but I was reluctant to sign up. Eventually, I gave in and had to pick an instrument. The trumpet was the first thing to come to mind.” Growing up near Buffalo, New York, Cindy’s dad took her to see a kids’ jazz band called Sugar and Jazz. “My dad wanted me to sign up. I didn’t think I was good enough,
but they accepted everyone who wanted to play. Once I joined them, I really started to love jazz music.” Cindy went on to play in various jazz bands throughout high school and college and had a special affinity for “bebop jazz.” She was influenced by such icons as Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, and Freddie Hubbard. Majoring in Jazz Studies and Music Education at Ithaca College with a Master’s in Jazz Performance/ Trumpet at Boston’s New England Conservatory, she also attained a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Montclair State University. She came to Franklin Lakes in 2005 to begin teaching instrumental music to 4th and 5th graders at Woodside Avenue, High Mountain Road, and Colonial Road schools. Under her direction, the program grew from 9 students to 225 throughout the three schools. In 2009, she was signed to the Trippin’ N’ Rhythm record label and has since had eight #1 Billboard Smooth Jazz Singles which she wrote and recorded. Her most recent hit, “Wind Chill Factor," from her CD “The Little Things” recently spent four weeks at #1. Among a long list of performances, awards and recognitions, Cindy was also a Grammy Music Educator Award quarterfinalist in 2014. Do her students know that their teacher performs internationally as a world-class trumpeter? “Not really,” laughs Cindy. “Some of the kids and parents are aware of it, but many are not.” Recently Cindy’s husband, David, bought tickets to a performance in New York City by Arturo Sandoval, a renowned Cuban jazz trumpet player. She posted on social media about how excited she was to see him at the Blue Note. Sandoval saw Cindy’s post prior to the show, and as she tells it, “he told me to bring my trumpet and jam with him! It was a blast!” Cindy has an endorsement with Taylor Trumpets, a prominent manufacturer in the U.K. Her performance trumpet has a raised pink bell, shaped like a heart. “It’s a girl-power thing,” says Cindy. Aside from her performance career, Cindy focuses on teaching foundational music skills. “I love teaching the younger kids because it’s the first time they get to play, and I enjoy giving them their start in

music. If they do everything right foundationally, they will play well into the future.” Cindy lives in Stockholm, New Jersey with her husband and five dogs. She is an avid animal advocate and keeps active in a variety of animal rescue causes, and has volunteered at Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge (RBARI) in Oakland. “I feel fortunate to be in Franklin Lakes because the arts are supported there. Many schools are now cutting music and the arts, which is a disservice to the students. Music is the best part of the day for many kids.” Cindybradley.com

FROM TRACK RUNNING TO COOL RUNNINGS
ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH FLANNERY, CORY K. DOVIAK, ĢIRTS KEHRIS FROM IBSF
Success has been a downward slide for Lauren Brzozowski. The 25-year-old from Wyckoff had a celebrated track career at Ramapo High School before moving on to Elon University on a full athletic scholarship specializing in 200- and 400-meter sprints and relays. She then joined the internationally acclaimed track and field program at Loughborough University in the U.K. while attaining her master's degree in marketing. That is, until Covid got in the way. "In March of 2020, I had to leave on short notice because the borders were closing due to the pandemic," says Lauren. "It was awful. I wanted to train with my teammates, not back at home. I was in shock and began to wonder what would happen to my running career." Fortunately, Lauren's training did not shut down during the quarantine. She was assisted by her former track coach (Mike Jackson, of Towson University) so she was in top shape during that time. "It was helpful to have people to lean on for support," says Lauren. Many of the track meets were being canceled, but Lauren began to realize that there may be an opportunity for her in Olympic bobsledding. She reached out to fellow Elon alum Veronica Day, a track and field jumper who had made the leap to skeleton for Team USA. Veronica connected her with the recruiter for the Olympic development team and she was invited to try out for the team, having never touched a bobsled before. "I was open to other sports that would work with my track experience," says Lauren. Starting with a potential position as a brake-woman, Lauren was able to show not only her speed (she had some of the fastest push-start times in the world) but also her strength (pushing a 400-pound bobsled) "The ice changes every day and it can affect your times, depending on the difference in the sleds and other factors," says Lauren. She was soon selected to sit in the pilot's seat of the 2-person sled with the reassurance that she was chosen for the slot because it represented the best opportunity for her to make it to the 2026 Olympic team. "New team members are not usually put into that position, but the team needed to develop more pilots, so it was perfect timing for me," she says. “Personally, I see more value being a pilot,” says Lauren. “I love it--and I put a lot of work into it. It's a better fit for me because it's more than just being a good athlete. It requires marketing yourself, fundraising, and being responsible for representing Team USA." Lauren also has to know the technology of the sled and check all of the mechanics, including the blades and the steering, before each ride. "Bobsledding is one of the most dangerous and expensive sports in the world. I feel passionate that what I do is about being fast as well as safe,” she says. "It’s crazy that this is what I do for a living now,” says Lauren. “I get to travel the world and meet all kinds of people. It’s not what I had in mind as a track athlete. I went from wearing shorts and a singlet to layers of warm clothing!” “There’s so much that’s great about the sport aside from the Olympics,” says Lauren. “I get to develop leadership qualities. I’m chasing the dreams of hard work on the ice and enjoying the rewards of it. Hopefully, I’ll have my success down the road.” IG: @zozzy7 Tik Tok: bobsled_broz

FROM WYCKOFF TO WINE COUNTRY
24
O UR TOWN | FOOD + BEVE RAGE
Evyn CAMERON Finding a connection to home at a recent stay in Napa Valley, California was an unexpected and delightful aspect of a recent trip by Sarah Flannery, one of Northwest Bergen Lifestyle’s photographers. Sarah is always on the hunt for unique story ideas. Even 3,000 miles away, she was able to hand-pick the perfect subject on her trip! While visiting Crocker & Starr, a favorite winery in St. Helena, California, Sarah stumbled across winemaker, Evyn Cameron, whose roots were established in none other than Wyckoff. We had the opportunity to chat with Evyn and discover her journey from NJ to CA! Evyn grew up on Annette Court in Wyckoff and attended Montclair Kimberley Academy in Montclair. As a rising soccer athlete, she played Torpedoes and enjoyed meeting local kids on her team. She later attended Boston University where she played soccer and graduated with a degree in Hospitality. “I loved the food and wine culture,” says Evyn, who was able to enroll in several wine courses while she was there. “Those classes were like a history lesson about wine,” she says. Evyn was soon accepted into a blind tasting course which enabled her to understand the different varieties of grapes, their origins, and their specific flavors. At first, Evyn didn’t consider a future as a winemaker. “Winemaking—especially in
Europe—is very generational. There’s usually a lineage of winemaking history within families. I didn’t have that,” she says. However, having a mom who worked as a perfumer and a father who collected wines, gave Evyn the foundational knowledge required. “We would share food and wine and discuss their sensory experience,” says Evyn. My family liked to travel, so I had the opportunity to go to different countries and begin to understand the taste and feel of various wines.” After college, Evyn kicked off her professional career in Manhattan, working at Thomas Keller’s Per Se. However, the pressure of working at a Michelin-starred restaurant was beginning to wear thin. A friend from BU who was living in Napa invited Evyn to visit. “On Christmas Day, 2009, I boarded a plane to Napa Valley. I made contacts and began apprenticing with a winemaker from a small vineyard. I had a passion, and it opened doors for me.” After a winemaking stint in New Zealand, Evyn continued following her path, eventually achieving the opportunity to work with highly respected winemaker, Pam Starr at Crocker & Starr—and the rest is history. A typical day for Evyn involves a great deal of labor-intensive work, and tasks are seasonal in nature. At the time of this interview, CONTINUED >

she was busy with blending trials, a process in which different combinations and vintages are blended together to create the best possible wine for a particular label. “Winemaking combines so many different creative aspects,” says Evyn. “I like the labor surrounding it, and I enjoy working directly with nature. Each year brings something different—it’s never boring, and I love working both outside and inside, making a product in the vineyard and then bringing it into the winery and making a product from that. It's rewarding to see a finished product from its start in the vineyard. I know I’m in the right place, I’m doing what I love!” crockerstarr.com

T H E H E R M I TA G E MUSEUM ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE HERMITAGE
A Revolutionary Piece of History
With humble beginnings as a two-story farmhouse built in the mid-1700s, the Hermitage, located at 335 North Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus, has an intriguing story to tell. After the French and Indian War, the house was purchased by James Marcus Provost, an officer in the British Army. He was called into active duty at the dawn of the Revolution and left his wife, Theodosia, at home, where her loyalties were soon to be tested at the home front of the American Revolution. In July 1778, following the Battle of Monmouth, Theodosia invited General George Washington and his officers to the Hermitage during the court-martial of General Charles Lee at Paramus First Church. Washington was headquartered there for four days with his staff, including Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens. He was also accompanied by the young French nobleman, the Marques de Lafayette. Theodosia soon met Aaron Burr, and the two quickly developed an intimate friendship that attracted immense criticism and disapproval since Theodosia’s husband was fighting for the British. Her husband had died by the end of the war, and Theodosia married Burr at the Hermitage in July of 1782. The Hermitage passed through a series of owners. It became a tavern and was then purchased in 1807 by Dr. Elijah Rosencrantz and his wife, Cornelia Suffern. In the 1820s, he built a cotton mill along the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook,

which served as the family-owned business for more than 60 years. In 1848, the home was restored to the Gothic Revival it is today. In 1917, Bess Rosencrantz opened a tea room in the front parlors of the Hermitage, running the business with her niece, Mary Elizabeth, for more than a decade. Mary Elizabeth was the last Rosencrantz to live at the Hermitage. When she died in March 1970, she bequeathed the house and its contents to the State of New Jersey. In 1970, the Hermitage was designated a National Historic Landmark. The structure was saved from ruin by a dedicated group of volunteers back in 1972,” says Julie Zier, Director of Development for the Hermitage Museum. Now, the Friends of The Hermitage strives to keep the museum’s legacy alive because of the great historical significance it represents. “The home has been restored as a museum and educational center as an ongoing project throughout the past 50 years, says Julie. “Covid interrupted our fundraising events, but now we have a full calendar of events planned!” On June 11, the Friends of the Hermitage celebrates its 50th Anniversary at Sun Valley Farm in Mahwah. This family-friendly event will include curated exhibits, vintage cars, antique agricultural exhibits, bee-keeping demonstrations, boxed lunch, and much more. The best prostate cancer care offers many treatment options.
And more personal attention. Everything medicine can do. A few things medicine can’t.
Is it enough to provide a team of specialists working together to determine the best treatment options for you?
Is it enough to reduce radiation treatments from 45 down to only 5? We don’t think so. That’s why our experts in prostate cancer care design personal treatments around you, remain committed long after treatment has ended, and provide a nurse navigator to guide you every step of the way.
To find the approach that’s best for you, call 201- 634-5567 or visit ValleyHealth.com/ProstateCancer
