December Holidays and Giving

STAFF PHOTOGR APHER

The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflects that best. This month we visit NJPAC and find out firsthand from Executive Vice President and Executive Producer, David Rodriguez, exactly what makes NJPAC stand out among other performing arts centers across the nation. If you’re planning a ski trip this winter, read up on The Equinox, located in beautiful Manchester, Vermont. It’s the perfect place to plan a romantic getaway or to bring the whole family for some cold-weather fun. Lastly, if you are hosting a holiday gathering, you’ll love our article featuring wonderful wines to have on hand for entertaining. Joe Ringwood of Super Cellars not only recommends fabulous go-to wines, but also provides some practical tips on pairing your favorite vintages with the foods on your party menu. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. Happy Holidays!

ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER PHOTOGRAPHY BY NEW JERSEY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

The arts are back! There’s nothing better than catching live entertainment--especially during the holidays. Located in downtown Newark, The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) is America’s most diverse performing arts center and the heart of artistic, educational, and civic culture in New Jersey. NJPAC brings diverse communities together, providing artistry, music, education, and culture in the heart of New Jersey with transformational performances featuring an array of national and international performers. The performing arts center is a catalyst of change and renewal for the City of Newark and is committed to shaping the next generation of dancers, vocalists, and musical performers.

We spoke with David Rodriguez, Executive Vice President and Executive Producer of NJPAC. He’s also a Newark native. After a professional career as a musician, he ran the Apollo Theater for ten years, after which he was offered the opportunity to work at NJPAC. “It was important to me to create diverse programs that resonate beyond the four walls of the venue—not just fill seats,” he says. His return to the city of Newark is particularly gratifying. “It reflects what I hold dearest,” he says. “Diversity, performing arts, and making a long-term impact.” Bringing NJPAC programs to underserved communities is a significant focus of the organization’s efforts. “We are the largest arts education program in the state, and we serve school districts in every county,” says David. “We fill the

gaps where the arts have been cut from school programs. There are arts education programs under the auspices of NJPAC in churches and community centers, too. We aren’t just selling tickets to a headliner. We are focused on creating a relationship as opposed to a transaction.” No one is turned away because of the inability to pay at NJPAC. “The arts are important for the soul,” says David. “They help us to understand each other’s cultures. The underserved have fewer resources and more barriers to reaching the arts. Our programs put kids from Newark and Short Hills together in the same class, and they are able to discover that they share passions for the same things. In a world with so much disagreement, it’s important to have something in common, such as a love of the arts.” CONTINUED >

NJPACs unique mission makes it a desirable venue for guest performers who get the opportunity to become role models for the community. “George Clinton was here recently. He is originally from Newark, and it was amazing to see him go into the public schools to perform a concert and share his experiences of growing up in Newark. He later admitted to me that he was rarely ever that nervous! But it was a wonderful interaction, and the kids were proud to see someone of that level of success coming from their own community. For a performer, it’s not just a stop on the tour. It’s more rewarding than that—they get to make a difference.” NJPAC recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary with an all-star gala on October 1st, as the Arts Center hosted its Women@NJPAC Spotlight Gala fundraiser featuring headliners Regina Belle, Laura Benanti, George Clinton, Savion Glover, Christian McBride, and more. The event honored founding Chairman Ray Chambers and the Chambers family, raising $2.2 million for NJPAC’s extensive arts education and community engagement programs. Looking forward to the holiday season, NJPAC will continue its tradition of excellence in presenting classic and creative performances. Now is the perfect time to support NJPAC by bringing the family to a show. Take a look at what’s in store. On Sunday, December 11, NJPAC welcomes the State Ballet Theater of Ukraine to perform The Nutcracker. Bring the family to celebrate tradition and nostalgia with this much-loved classical ballet. Ukraine’s national ballet troupe elevates the performance to new heights with choreography by Andrei Litvinov. Light up the holidays on December 13 with Lightwire Theater’s A Very Electric Christmas. This magical family show is performed in complete darkness, illuminated with electroluminescent costumes, puppets, and

scenery set to classic and current holiday hit music. Kids of all ages (and adults!) will be dazzled as the North Pole comes to life in front of their eyes. If you and yours prefer a more “reimagined” version of a classic, check out The Hip Hop Nutcracker on Saturday, December 18, returning to the stage for its seventh season. This contemporary dance spectacle is a remix and reimagination version of Tchaikovsky’s ballet with supercharged hip hop choreography--a truly inspirational holiday event. The fun continues with Cirque Dreams Holidaze, lighting up the day after Christmas (December 26)

with an electrifying stage spectacular. Broadway director Neil Goldberg has assembled the most unique cast of incomparable cirque artists and theatrical talent to wow audiences with a new cirque adventure wrapped into the ultimate holiday gift for the entire family. Get your holiday entertainment signed, sealed, and delivered, reserve tickets for a show (or all of them!), and celebrate the arts in a place that creates positive change. njpac.org

If you are busy planning an upcoming holiday gathering this season, check out Super Cellars in Ridgewood. General manager Joe Ringwood is a certified sommelier with an advanced certification with WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust), and he’s the “go-to” guy for selecting the perfect wines. Joe will provide you with some excellent and practical advice about pairing wine with food. Joe’s specialty is helping his customers with great pairing options but firmly believes that if your palate isn’t fond of that particular wine, food, or cheese, it won’t be a great experience for you. “For most, cheese pairs better with white wines than red wines. Soft cheeses go well with white wine, and harder cheeses are a better choice to handle the more robust flavor of red wines,” says Joe. “But the best pairing is drinking the wine you like with the cheese you like!” Following some basic pairing rules can help you decide what to serve at your next event. “The objective of pairing wine and food/cheese is to ‘do no harm,’” he says. “For example, drinking high-alcohol, high-tannin wines with spicy, hot foods will accentuate the heat of the spice and may make you a bit uncomfortable. Avoid drinking dry wines with mold cheeses (blue cheese) because the veins of the mold will strip the wines of their fruitiness. In both cases, an off-dry to sweet wine is the best choice.” Personal preferences also play a role in your wine-pairing menu. “You can decide whether you want to complement or contrast the wines with the food,” says Joe. “A good example is a dish with a cream sauce. Complimentary pairings would be something like a California chardonnay that is rich and creamy. The contrasting choice could be a chablis with high acidity that will cut through the cream sauce and refresh your palate.” Foods with high acid content—think tomato sauces— need high-acid wines. “Wines such as barbera or chianti are excellent choices,” says Joe. Another important consideration is to match weight to weight. A heavy food dish requires a heavier wine and a lighter dish requires a lighter wine. “You don’t want the food or the wine to overpower the other. This is where the old adage white wine with fish and red wine with meat comes from,” Joe advises. “When pairing wines with cheese, the wine is the more important consideration. Very few wines will affect the taste of the cheese, but the cheese will most likely affect the taste of the wine. Considerations when pairing includes texture, intensity, and acidity. Decide if you want CONTINUED >

to complement or contrast in texture, intensity, and acidity. Do you want to serve creamy cheeses with creamy wines or creamy cheeses with palate-cleansing, sparkling wine? Wines and cheeses both have acidity, so try pairing a cheese higher-acid cheese with a higher-acid wine. Goat cheese is high in acid and pairs great with a sauvignon blanc.” Here are a few popular kinds of cheese and wine suggestions for pairing. ASIAGO – Light bodied whites like pinot grigio, friulano or etna bianco. If the cheese has a little age, think about a chianti, dolcetto, or barbera. BRIE – White wines are best; chardonnay, pinot gris, or sparkling wine. Recommended reds (if you must) would include medium-bodied, moderate tannin reds like merlot or syrah. BRILLAT-SAVARIN – High acid whites like sparkling wine, chablis, chenin blanc, sauvignon blanc. CAMEMBERT – Similar to brie choices. A buttery California chardonnay is a great pairing! CHEDDAR – Look for red wines with some intensity. Good pairings

28

include zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon, Bordeaux, or malbec. MANCHEGO – Bigger reds work here. Try matching region to region with a nice Spanish Rioja, Ribera del Duero, or Jumilla. PARMIGIANO-REGGIANO – This hard cheese holds up great to bold, red wines, Nebbiolo-based reds, or cabernet sauvignon-based reds. If white is your preference, bubbles are a perfect match! Try an Italian Franciacorta. If you need to stock your cabinet for an upcoming holiday event, select lighter-bodied, lower-tannin reds that are versatile enough to pair with various foods. Top choices include pinot noir, zinfandel, cru Beaujolais, Côte du Rhône, or a sparkling brut rose. Fresh, bright whites are crowd pleasers, so try dry Riesling, dry Chenin blanc, white Burgundy, or sauvignon blanc. Sparkling wines are incredibly versatile, with some fantastic ones at modest prices. “Don’t fret too much over it. Just be careful that your pairing doesn’t clash,” Joe advises. “It’s all about the celebration--let’s not take the perfect pairing too seriously!”

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
