THE RAMAPO-BERGEN ANIMAL REFUGE, INC., a no-kill rescue shelter in Oakland, is a place of love and compassion, rescuing canines and felines who have been abandoned, surrendered or pulled from other rescue groups and local shelters since it opened in 1978.

“We’re really trying to make a big difference in our community by spreading awareness for animal rescue in general,” says Aubrey Durenberger, the group’s operations manager.

RBARI accepts animals from other counties in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, so there is always a pressing need for foster and adoptive families here in Bergen County, particularly for cats. RBARI’s cattery, located on the second floor of the refuge, houses cats of all ages, breeds and energy levels. In one room, clever kittens play with toys and look up excitedly at visitors, while down the hall, adult cats perch playfully on cat-scratchers and senior cats peer calmly at guests.

“Remco came to the Mahwah Police Department when he was about a year and a half old, and we’ve been partners since then. He is a Belgian Malinois, and his primary duties are in narcotics and patrol, so he is able to locate the odor of illegal narcotics, track a suspect who has fled a scene and help locate lost citizens. He lives with me and my family, so we’re together 24/7; I could get a call in the middle of the night that we’re needed, and Remco and I are out the door. He’s a great partner, and we’ve formed an extremely strong bond, which is essential. I use very specific commands, he knows my body language, and I can tell what he’s thinking, so when it’s time to go to work, he’s always ready. I take him into schools and other community programs as well as our Junior Police Academy for demonstrations, and the kids really like him. We go to the park whenever we can so he can run around and chase his ball just to use up some energy, which he has a lot of. “Pet Therapy has been one of the most cherished programs we offer at Valley Hospital since it started in 2003. We have 34 dogs of all shapes and sizes, from a little Yorkie to a big Irish wolfhound. They are all certified as therapy dogs and are allowed in almost any part of the hospital. Many times we take a dog to see elderly patients who were missing their dogs, and they cry or have big smiles when they see a dog. One woman even tried to hide a therapy dog under her covers so we wouldn’t take him!

Dogs are the most innocent and light-hearted creatures, and they just want to see you smile. They seem to know who needs the extra love and provide them with lots of comfort. We’ve seen people who are having trouble expressing their needs, but when the dog comes in and sits on the bed, they almost immediately become relaxed and more open. They’re a great distraction. Pets have been shown to lower blood pressure and decrease anxiety. GRACIE, A GOLDEN RETRIEVER, HAS MANY SCARVES IN HER WARDROBE IN LOTS OF DIFFERENT COLORS, AND SHE’LL LIKELY BE WEARING ONE AT A RIDGEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY READ TO A DOG SESSION OFFERED THREE AFTERNOONS A WEEK. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this pooch is a huge hit: Even the shyest child walks in with a smile when greeted by Gracie, who sits quietly on the rug ready to listen to a book of the young reader’s choosing. These popular children’s programs in several local libraries all offer certified therapy dogs who prove to make for the perfect reading partner. Not only is reading to a furry friend fun, but it also sharpens literacy skills, and a child’s self-confidence grows by leaps and bounds through reading aloud.

Among the libraries in the area that offer the program are Glen Rock (Paws for Reading), Waldwick (Read to a Furry Friend), Ridgewood (Read to a Dog), Mahwah (Read to a Therapy Dog) and Ramsey (Dog Buddies). Most have 10- to 15-minute individual time slots for young readers and the therapy dogs, who are always accompanied by their owners.

“Sometimes the parent or caregiver wants to come in and watch too,” says Victoria Schnure, the Read to a Dog Program coordinator at the Ridgewood Public Library, which works with more than a dozen dogs for their program. “They seem to enjoy it as much as the kids.”

At the Waldwick Public Library, Youth Services Librarian Jennifer Kelly-Maloney says their program is called Read to a Furry Friend because one of their visiting pets is actually a cat.

“Michelangelo sits in a stroller while the kids are reading. It’s fun to have a different animal in sometimes,” she says.

Jupiter, the dog who visits their library, is a Leonberger, so he’s sizable and also very popular, especially around kids who haven’t had much exposure to dogs.

“Some parents see this program as an opportunity for their kids who might be a little nervous around dogs to be with them in a safe place,” Jennifer says.

And sometimes the bond is formed quickly. Within a 10-minute reading session, she has seen children go from sitting on the far corner of the bench to inching over to the edge to sitting on the floor petting the dog.

“The best thing parents can do for their kids is to set them up for success,” says Jessica Bush, executive director of Tutor Doctor of North Jersey, which offers personalized, at-home academic tutoring services as well as skill-building classes and test preparation.

“Make sure they are blocking out time in order to do their summer school work,” she says.

Spend quality time early on getting lists together for supplies you’ll need. If you have a child going from elementary to middle school, the transition can be challenging.

“All of a sudden kids, go from an environment where everything is planned for them to middle school, where they are expected to figure it out on their own, and that is not easy,” Jessica says.

Time management. Map out a schedule you can stick to, and be sure there is enough time to do assignments as well as review for upcoming tests.

Pick the right backpack. Choose a backpack that is both comfortable and able to hold all of your books and supplies.

Color coding. Matching folders and book covers in the same color makes it easy to grab from a locker in a hurry.

Organizing. Organizing is not just about schoolwork; it is about life. Make sure you spend an important part of every day with friends and doing something you are passionate about.

Tutor if needed. Don’t wait until you see C's and D's in the first few marking periods and your child starts to feel overwhelmed. Keep an eye on progress, and provide a tutor early on if needed.
