We Love Our Furry Friends! F

or many people, pets aren’t just animals to have around the house, they are loyal companions, enthusiastic playmates, dedicated listeners and an integral part of the family. That’s exactly how we feel here at North Scottsdale Lifestyle, so for the September “Pet Issue” we’ve included some inspiring stories about local pet-lovers doing everything they can to say thank you to their four-legged companions.

Take, for instance, Reigning Grace Ranch, a horse sanctuary dedicated to redeeming these majestic creatures after they have been abused and neglected. Owners Christopher and Amanda Moore pair the horses with children that come from similar backgrounds, creating a truly life-changing healing process that leaves both the child and horse with a renewed sense of purpose. Also providing healing for animals is Foothills Animal Rescue, an organization dedicated to giving abandoned dogs and cats a second chance by getting them off the streets, back to good health and into a warm and loving home. For all those pet parents out there looking to escape for a weekend, Always Unleashed Pet Resort offers animal care like no other. Rest assured while leaving your furry friend at this stunning cage-free hotel with expansive green lawns, sparkling blue pools and spotless accommodations—they may even have a more relaxing time than you.

Around Town NORTH SCOTTSDALE BUSINESS LEADER APPOINTED TO BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS BOARD OF DIRECTORS The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP recently announced that Jeffrey H. Wolf, a partner in the firm’s Phoenix office and North Scottsdale resident, has been appointed to the board of directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix (BGCMP). In this role, Wolf will be responsible for sharing mission and direction, ensuring leadership and resources, and monitoring and improving performance through participation, governance, leadership, and fundraising. “As someone who grew up in a family of limited means and a father myself, joining this board took on personal meaning to me,” says Wolf, who also has served in leadership roles in other Valley non-profit organizations. “The Clubs’ mission—to help kids achieve their full potential—is something I focus on instilling at home each day. It was a perfect fit for me to help an organization that needs people to step up and do it.”

GRIMALDI’S PIZZERIA FIGHTS TO END CHILDHOOD HUNGER One in five children in the United States face hunger every day. In an effort to combat this problem, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria has joined the fight to raise awareness and end childhood hunger in America. Throughout September, in honor of Hunger Awareness Month, guests who dine at any Arizona Grimaldi’s Pizzeria locations can donate to No Kid Hungry, a charitable organization pushing to end childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need, every day. In return for their donation, guests will receive a gift card matching their donation amount to use on their next visit. All of the proceeds raised will benefit No Kid Hungry. Grimaldi’s Pizzeria has eight locations in Arizona, including three in the Scottsdale area.

a Continuing Dental Education for Life-Long Learning article that appeared in an issue of CDEWorld.com. The article was titled “CBCT Scanners for the General Dental Office.” CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. “While I enjoy lecturing and interacting with fellow dentists, writing this article for peers knowing that it counts towards continuing education credits made it a very different kind of task,” Work said. “I had a lot of fun writing this article knowing that each concept needed to be concise and clear, with documentation to back up each and every statement.”

CITIZEN PUBLIC HOUSE ANNOUNCES UPDATED MENU Award-winning Citizen Public House has updated their menu with some very interesting additions. SCOTTSDALE-BASED CAMELOT HOMES TO REFURBISH RESIDENTIAL HOMES OF BOYS HOPE, GIRLS HOPE OF ARIZONA

Washington Federal, headquartered in Scottsdale, recently pledged its full support of Arizona veterans, making a $2.9 million investment in Rally Point, a non-profit organization focused on providing veterans, service members and their families resources in Southern Arizona regardless of discharge status, entitlements or health benefits. The organization is taking the historic Old Pueblo Club in Tucson and not only updating the structure, but reimagining it into permanent supportive housing for our local veterans. Their vision to create not only apartments, but a cafeteria, exercise facility and convenience store for veterans is something Washington Federal stands behind and fully supports both at the local and national level. This project is one of many Washington Federal supports in Arizona as part of its community outreach and assistance efforts.

This summer, local builders Camelot Homes and Robson Communities, along with their partners and subcontractors, refurbished the residential homes of Boys Hope, Girls Hope of Arizona. Robson Resort Communities led efforts to revitalize the “Boys Hope” home and Camelot Homes focused their efforts on revitalizing the “Girls Hope” home for Boys Hope Girls Hope of Arizona, a privately funded, non-profit organization serving aspiring youth-in-need. The improvements covered essentially all areas of the homes such as plumbing and electrical work, flooring, paint, cabinets, fixtures, appliances, landscape improvements and various repairs. More than 60 trade companies and volunteer groups were involved in the project. “Camelot Homes, together with our trade partners, is so proud to be a part of this project,” said Julie Hancock, managing director of Camelot Homes. “The first time we visited the Girls House and met the amazing residents and staff, we immediately knew we wanted to help in any way we could to make their house a place they could be proud to call home. These young men and women are an inspiration to us all and we’re honored by the opportunity to create an environment that will continue to foster growth, learning, and prosperity for current and future residents. The mission and values of Boys Hope, Girls Hope epitomize the solid foundation necessary for success not only in the home and at school, but also in the business world, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for each of them – it’s bound to be bright, and we’re happy to have played a small role in what’s sure to be their big success.”

hat two fast-casual restaurants serve breakfast and lunch at two popular retail locations across from one another, consistently serve quality food seven days a week and are run by the same owner? Give up? They’re Chloe’s Corner at Kierland and C3 Kitchen at Scottsdale Quarter. Owner, Chef Ashley Young, started her career in the culinary industry at the age of 15, later training at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and eventually becoming a pastry chef. She also gained valuable experience from working stints at Tonto Bar and Grill, Paradise Bakery, Whole Foods and Fox Restaurant Concepts. In December 2009, she purchased Chloe’s Corner and brought with her the idea of serving simple, quality food at reasonable prices. “Everyone should expect great service, no matter how much or how little they spend,” states Young. “My goal is for people to have

an atmospheric experience with great quality food, great prices and great service.” That’s exactly what you can expect when dining at these fast-casual restaurants. Menu items include breakfasts, salads and sandwiches, all with different twists. Gluten-free and vegan items are also available, and both serve housemade baked goods, such as delicious danishes, moist muffins, brownies and cookies. CHLOE’S CORNER

Breakfasts here are simple, with egg sandwiches, burritos, oatmeal, fruit and yogurt parfaits, granola cereals and bagels. Plus, they’re famous for serving Arizona’s best 50-cent cup of coffee. The hot and cold sandwiches are generously portioned. I tried the smoked turkey sandwich and it was very fresh. I also thoroughly enjoyed the American grilled cheese sandwich made with cheddar, Swiss, and white American CONTINUED >

cheese and topped with bacon and tomato. Other popular sandwiches include chipotle-raspberry turkey, tuna melt, chicken pesto, BLT and hot pastrami. In the salad department, I sampled the Corner Chop made with mixed greens, red grapes, blue cheese, smoked turkey, candied pecans and housemade poppy seed dressing. After the first bite, I could see why it’s the most popular with regulars. Other salads include Chinese chicken, albacore tuna, classic Caesar, spinach, Greek, chef, antipasti and chopped romaine. In addition to the immensely popular tomato soup, there is also a featured soup du jour. The marketplace has grab-and-go items and beverages, and there’s a long diner’s counter that seats nine, along with a scattering of small tables to give it a cozy atmosphere. A small, pet friendly patio has tables with umbrellas. General Manager, Colby Young, is very personable and has an excellent rapport with his customers, many being regulars. C3 KITCHEN

When news spread about the popularity and convenience of Chloe’s Corner, C3 Kitchen was added at the Scottsdale Quarter in May 2013. This more upscale restaurant offers a coffee bar and blended drinks, along with the same quality food and reasonable prices found at Chloe’s. Breakfast highlights are similar with simple, healthy choices. Lunches include hot and cold sandwiches and salads. I sampled the hot pressed turkey and pepper sandwich made with Salsalito turkey, caramelized onions, provolone and mayo, and it was quite tasty. The BLAT was also delicious, brimming with layers of bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato. Other cold sandwiches include roast beef and coleslaw, roasted veggie,

tuna salad, chicken salad, turkey focaccia, the garden and the C3 club. Hot pressed sandwiches include an Italian baguette, caprese, a tuna melt and green chili roast beef. I especially enjoyed the C3 chopped salad served with greens, turkey, apples, blue cheese, almonds and housemade apricot dressing. Other salads available are Greek, Caesar, lemon chicken, albacore tuna, Asian, spinach and southwest chicken. This restaurant is larger and has four different seating areas— single tables, community, lounge seating and a patio. The spacious sidewalk patio is available for guests, and pets are welcomed. In fact, they often hold events at their neighboring pet store. The coffee bar has four different brewing styles – drip, café au lait, chemex and French pressed. Blended drinks and teas are also available, and Young doesn’t skimp on quality either, as she uses products from Boars Head and Passport coffee. Wifi, as well as a flat screen TV are nice amenities for catching up on emails and headlines. Be sure to sign up for their Five Star Rewards Program too, where you can earn points towards beverages, breakfasts or lunches. The secret’s out, and I highly recommend you visit both locations as you can always expect good food, fast service and affordable prices. tep through the doors of Diva Divine Boutique and enter a true shopper’s heaven. Find colorful racks lined with chic wares throughout this cozy neighborhood boutique—they carry everything from Brighton Bags and accessories to shirts from brands like Splendid, Michael Stars and Tart. In front, catch a ray of sunlight gleaming off the silver on one of their many Alex and Ani bracelets or signature Pandora charms, and be sure to take some time to admire their display cases filled eclectic, artist-driven jewelry from Uno de 50. A FAMILY AFFAIR

Founders Greg and Cathy Roth have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, yet they never expected to eventually run a fullfledged fashion boutique. “At first we were a lotions and potions store,” explains Cathy. “But as we listened to our customers over the years, we gradually started changing and it really evolved into a boutique.” The transition was made official in 2004, when the store changed its name to Diva Divine, becoming a landmark local shop in North Scottsdale. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

The wooden sign above the boutique’s entryway really says it all: Enter as Strangers, Leave as Friends. And that is truly how it is at Diva Divine. Their level of customer service is exceptional, with each team member taking a personal interest in their customers by helping them find the right style, fit or gift. 18

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | September 2015

“We’re like bartenders sometimes,” says Cathy. “While its true that we don’t know your family, you can tell us all about them and we can help pick out what’s right for them.” “A lot of customers have become our friends to the point where we know their family and they know ours,” adds Greg. Not only do Greg and Cathy take the time to chat with their customers about their lives, but they always make sure to listen to their style wants and needs, curating their inventory from what they learn. EYE FOR STYLE

Most of the locals that shop at Diva Divine come for fashion advice from Cathy, who has earned a reputation for being able to size people up for the perfect clothing fit. “Once I see your body and get a vision of what will fit you, I’m going to give you a lot of clothes to try on, but they’re all going to fit, and that’s where the fun begins,” says Cathy. And it’s a truly wonderful experience having a vast array of clothing that seems custom-curated just for you delivered right to your dressing room door, with the added bonus of Cathy’s expert and honest opinion. NEIGHBORHOOD SHOP

Another point of pride for Diva Divine is their position as a long-standing, mainstay community boutique. “We’re a true mom and pop shop. We want to be a part of the community and be in a neighborhood and location where you know us,” says Cathy. “I really love my job. It’s just that satisfaction everyday that you made someone happy, and that makes us happy.” Shop like a local at DivaDivineBoutique.com

Pampered pooches and felines will rejoice in Always Unleashed Pet Resort's four-star stays.

Lucky dogs from all over the East Valley are suddenly not so upset when they find out about their owners leaving town. In fact, they are downright looking forward to it, as that means a stay at Scottsdale’s Always Unleashed Pet Resort. One of the most unique boarding facilities in the country, Always Unleashed is 100 percent cage-free, which allows for the dogs, who are naturally pack animals, to roam free and interact with others. And roam they can, as the resort boasts a sprawling 9,000 square-foot yard of pest-free/dirt-free artificial turf and includes a 55-foot wide beach-entry swimming lagoon to cool off in. For dogs that are not the aquatic-type, there are still nine sunshades and two-dozen trees located throughout the property, as well as industrial grade misters and fans for them to relax and keep cool under during the heat of the day. While many pet resorts have a ban on toys, Always Unleashed is stocked with a ton of varieties, all of which are

20

guaranteed to be indestructible for the safety of the animals. The undisputed favorite among them is a ten-foot tug-of-war rope, which incites friendly battles for up to 15 dogs almost every time it is brought out. And if anyone wants to see just how much fun the dogs are having, they can log into one of the resort's six webcams, which are available to anyone at any time, whether they have a dog staying there or not. What allows Always Unleashed to be such a fun and safe place for dogs is their dedicated staff, who is committed to maintaining order among the organized chaos. They are present 24/7, and unlike most facilities that have their staff observe from another room, at Always Unleashed they are constantly interacting with the dogs, including jumping into the pool twice a day during the warmer months to offer complimentary surfboard rides to any of the dogs who might be willing.

At Always Unleashed it is not just about fun and games, however. They have a manners program that teaches the dogs to focus on proper behavior as they transition through their day. They get called on one at a time before being allowed to pass through a gate, and before a ball ever flies through the air, they have to quiet down and harness their anticipation. With a pack of up to 75 dogs roaming the yard at one time, Always Unleashed understands the need to make sure each one is able to join the party without disrupting the harmony of the group. Before any dog can be boarded at the facility, they are required to go through an evaluation process to ensure that they have the proper temperament for Always Unleashed’s cage-less lifestyle. “We don’t feel that in 15 or 20 minutes we can properly evaluate a dog,” explains Always Unleashed owner Karen Burnett. Instead, they require the dog to spend a minimum of six hours at the facility and be a part of the daycare program before allowing them to board. “Throughout the day we do so many activities and are kicking out so many toys, so we need to make sure that we have

dogs that are willing to listen to us to make sure that we can maintain order.” The all-day screening process also allows the staff at Always Unleashed to evaluate each dog as an individual, and they are extremely proud to not be breed restrictive. “If you see a bully breed playing out there with everyone else, it is because we are confident that the dog is 110 percent awesome,” adds Karen. Always Unleashed accepts dogs of all sizes as well, and though they all roam together throughout the day, the facility recently unveiled its “Tiny Town”—a new and separate area upstairs geared specifically toward the smaller breeds, which includes a covered grassy porch for both potty and play. Always Unleashed offers both a doggie daycare option for those who just need a place for their dog to spend the day and a slumber party option for overnight boarding. I

n a section of the brilliant North Scottsdale desert lies acres of open fields, where groups of majestic horses stand under the shade of trees, gallop with the beauty of complete freedom, knock each other around in play, and stick their noses curiously over the fence when a human passes by. Here, one is immediately overcome with a sense of calm and peace, as if all the troubles and worries of the world have fallen away in the presence of these gentle creatures. You have entered the grounds of Reigning Grace Ranch, where hope is rediscovered and redemption runs free. From the looks of the ranch, you would never guess that founders Christopher and Amanda Moore once led a completely different life, holding corporate jobs and living in a suburban area. “We often refer to it as our past life was like eating chocolate bunnies; it was big, looked wonderful and tasted sweet, but once you really bit into it there was nothing in the middle,” explains Christopher. Always avid horse lovers, the couple decided to pack up their things and moved to a ranch in North Scottsdale with their horses in hopes of rediscovering the beauty and purpose of their lives. “If you have ever had something happen in your life where it just seemed like every door closed where you shouldn’t be and every door opened where you were supposed to be, that’s how we ended up at the ranch,” recalls Christopher. That’s when fate struck, in the form of a herd of wild horses nonetheless. As Christopher and Amanda settled into the ranch, they started feeding and taking care of these free-roaming creatures, getting to know each one individually. Eventually, however, the county wanted to remove the horses, so the couple decided to take things into their own hands. “We did what anyone would do,” says Amanda with a chuckle. “We rounded up 65 wild horses and decided to adopt them out.” And within two months, all of the horses had new homes, with some staying at the ranch. Soon, the neighborhood kids started coming out to the ranch to help Christopher and Amanda, who immediately recognized what a therapeutic experience it was for them. And from there, Reigning Grace Ranch was born. Today, the ranch works to rehabilitate abused and neglected horses, while restoring 22

Amazing Grace

Take, for example, Joshua’s Dream, a former racehorse that came to the ranch after being deemed unable to walk again. However, after some time spent healing at the ranch, he was able to walk, trot and run, becoming the sage and gentle leader of the heard. “He’s tall, brave and confident again, and he loves life. That’s a second chance, that’s what we believe in,” says Christopher. STRENGTHENING THE CHILD

children and families in partnership with them, bringing hope and a sense of purpose back into their lives. REDEEMING THE HORSE

Whether grazing in the pasture, galloping through the desert or spending some one-on-one time with the kids, all the horses at Reigning Grace Ranch seem to have a sheen of confidence and purpose that makes it difficult to believe that they were once rescues coming from harrowing situations. “When they come to the ranch we recognize how valuable they really are, and it’s amazing how quickly the spirit of a horse comes back when they realize they’re in a place where they’re appreciated and back in a herd again—that’s restoring the horse,” says Christopher. What really makes a difference for the horses is the concept of restoration and redemption that runs so deep at Reigning Grace Ranch. Instead of focusing on the horse’s history and perceived habits, they look towards a full mind, body and spirit recovery process. This starts with listening to the horse and letting them show their preferences. Then after restoring the horses to physical health, they put them back out with the herd and observe how they interact with each other and the kids. “It’s really important with the type of work that we do with kids that the horse thoroughly enjoys their job, because the last thing we want to do is have a child go out to seek refuge with a horse and have it turn them away,” says Amanda. Throughout the whole process of restoring the horse to physical health, an even bigger milestone is reached: gaining a sense of confidence and a restored zest for life.

That belief in second chances for the horses also extends to the ranch’s belief in restoring children as well. For Christopher and Amanda, placing these rehabilitated horses with children that are also trying to heal from a traumatic event is when something truly beautiful and life changing takes place. “When you put the horse in the mix is when the magic happens. The horse creates this kind of peace, where the child has to become so present and so raw that they can’t hide behind any idea of what they are supposed to be or look like,” says Christopher. For at Reigning Grace Ranch, children are finally able to acknowledge their inner struggles, and that’s when the healing really starts. No matter what their struggle is—the ranch has kids come from all walks of life, whether its foster care and child protective services, addictions and eating disorders, or kids dealing with a parent illness— they work to instill a sense of purpose, confidence and trust in the children so that they and grow and flourish in society. “When a child gets into an environment where they feel empowered and like what they do matters, they are redeemed,” shares Amanda. “My philosophy is that a whole lot of love and a building up of self-confidence in children can save the world.” It’s the deep belief in building up a child’s self confidence by pairing them with a horse in a safe environment that fuels the ranch’s commitment to helping them find their passion and purpose in life. “I think everyone has a place, they just need to figure out what makes their heart beat, and no matter what the obstacles are, make it happen,” says Christopher. DISCOVERING HOPE

At the heart of the ranch, in both the work they do with horses and children, is a deep dedication to restoring lost hope through healing and love. “When they come to us they have no hope,” says Amanda. “So it’s the same thing with both the horses and the kids, we want them to be empowered and we want them to realize what they are capable of and how what they do matters.” Watching children regain a sense of hope while working with rehabilitated horses and experiencing the true power and resilience of the human spirit to push through the hard times has been a life changing experience for Christopher and Amanda as well. “Life is tough, but no matter what society says you can or cannot do, you don’t listen to them and you just do it. If you have that hope and that spirit, you just do it,” says Amanda. It is that spirit of hope, healing and redemption always present at Reigning Grace Ranch that truly has the power to change a life. Learn more at Azrgr.org. Foothills Animal Rescue

OFFERING PETS A CAGE-FREE SANCTUARY WHILE WAITING FOR THEIR FOREVER HOME ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY JON MALIS

R

escuers found a yellow Labrador pup with a serious leg injury, most likely caused by being hit by a car. He was under a year old and needed a new hip, months of rehabilitation and a safe foster home where he could heal. Foothills Animal Rescue (FAR) made this all possible by holding a donation drive to cover his care. They named this little fighter Bronco, after the football team, and eventually he was adopted into a good home. Bronco’s story is just one of thousands seen at FAR, most with bumpy beginnings and happy endings. They have rescued more than 2,000 dogs and cats in the past four years alone, and are proud to be one of about six private, non-profit rescues in the Valley to own their own facility. A UNIQUE PROGRAM

Foothills Animal Rescue offers a cage-free environment in hopes of creating a home-like living situation. Dogs stay in rooms with other dogs and enjoy daily walks, and there are two large cat rooms, one of which is reserved for cats with leukemia. They are one of the few rescue groups who can accept cats with Leukemia, since it is highly contagious to other cats and the ones suffering from it must be quarantined until they are better. They also make special efforts to find these kitties homes. Even though the rescue center has its own facility, it also utilizes foster homes. “Space is what prevents us from taking on more. We want to create as close to a home as possible and try not to overcrowd the rooms,” says Eddie Nichols, the outreach and development director at FAR. Nichols recruits, trains and manages their many volunteers, and sets-up and coordinates their adoption events that take place in Scottsdale pet stores. “Younger kittens and puppies are in foster homes,” says Nichols. “We always have a need for foster families and would like to grow our foster program. The more fosters we have, the more animals we can save.” VOLUNTEERS

The number of volunteers in the program greatly outnumber the paid staff members. Volunteers help with everything from rescuing animals from shelters to helping them get matched with the right people. There are also dog walkers, cat sitters and volunteers to help keep the rooms clean. The volunteers also play a major role in FAR’s Resale Boutique, 24

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | September 2015

which helps bring in much needed funding. There is always a need for volunteers, and it’s important to FAR that their volunteers are happy. “We want you in it for the long run,” says Nichols. She also spends time training and finding the right job for each person that signs up to help, investing time in the volunteers and doing her best to accommodate schedules, needs and wants. FOR THE DOGS

FAR chooses its dogs with their volunteers and cage-free environment in mind, taking in a variety of breeds. The breeds must be a good match for their facility with temperaments that the volunteers feel comfortable handling. Most of their dogs come from Maricopa Animal Control, who sends a team to the shelter when they have available space. The public can also surrender pets to the rescue, but their acceptance is contingent on available space and a behavior evaluation. When someone brings in a stray, they will do their best to offer assistance to reunite them with their owner, scanning for microchips in their clinic and offering advice. “My favorite thing about this is finding homes for the animals, that’s what it’s all about. Maricopa County has a big homeless animal problem,” says Nichols. They work hard to make good matches and allow adopters to bring the pet back if it isn’t a good fit, but they are proud to say they have a low return rate. They follow up with adopted families, and if there is a problem they are happy to offer advice. They also partner with local trainers who sometimes offer help at a discounted rate. “We do our best to solve the problem,” says Nichols. BRINGING HOME THE KIBBLE

This non-profit organization is not government funded, but is supported through generous donations from the community, the Resale Boutique, and a variety of special events. One coming up is their Fourth Annual Whiskers and Wine event—a wine and food tasting with live jazz and a silent auction. The event takes place in October at Carefree Plaza. While FAR has had calls for all varieties of animals, they redirect them to the appropriate rescues and stick to what they do best, rescuing dogs and cats of all ages. Learn more about adopting or volunteering at FootHillsAnimal.org. No appointment is needed to visit FAR.

fter eight years spent in the pharmaceutical industry, Melanie Eich knew she wanted something a bit more satisfying out of her career. She had always loved animals, and realized that if she could shift her professional focus towards them, that she was bound to find that sense of satisfaction she felt was missing. With her strong sales background, she refocused towards selling pet supplies, which got her closer, but not close enough, to the animals that she wanted to work with. Through those years, she had a plan in the back of her mind that she thought just might work. Through her interactions with people in the pet industry, and even pet owners that she knew, she recognized a potential niche for an in-home pet sitting service. Whether to help cover for a long day at the office or a week-long family vacation, she realized not everyone was a fan of traditional animal boarding services and thought she could offer an alternative. Her solution was Any Critter Sitter, LLC., a fully bonded and insured, unique pet sitting service available to not only cats and dogs, but also ferrets, bunnies, fish, reptiles, and more. “I really believe in the in-home care aspect, so I tailored the business to letting the animals stay where they are comfortable and happy, in their own environment and following their same daily routines,” explains Melanie. “I will work with the customer to create visit times that coincide with their pet’s regular feedings, walkings, medications, et cetera." All throughout the Northeast Valley—they can be seen running around Scottsdale, Cave Creek, Paradise Valley, Phoenix and beyond— Melanie makes sure that her clients’ pets receive plenty of attention, even while their owners are away. And since they are already stopping by to check on Fido, Any Critter Sitter also offers a variety of regular home sitting services such as mail pick-up, watering plants, or taking out the trash. Every situation is unique, so they work one-on-one to try to meet each of their customer’s needs. 26

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | September 2015

In the beginning, Melanie grew her business slowly, mainly through word of mouth, while still working in the sales side of the pet industry. “My first clients in those early days were people I worked with and some of my friends,” she says. “I then began to get references from many of the veterinarians throughout my sales territory that I had built relationships with. Slowly, they began to offer my services more and more, some even by posting them on their website, and it just started to take off from there.” With an average day that starts before 6 a.m. and doesn't end until after 9 p.m., it is safe to say that word is getting out about Any Critter Sitter. But Melanie knows that her unique services alone are just a small part of what her customers need to be at ease with leaving their pets behind at home. Hers is a business where communication is key in ensuring a true peace of mind. Each prospective client is initiated with a complimentary meet-andgreet, where Melanie comes to the home to introduce herself to the family and animals. While there, she will talk over what each family needs and create a client record to document all of the details—from food and medication to the specifics of the home. While the family is away, Any Critter Sitter is happy to provide updates via text, including photos, so everyone can feel at ease knowing that everything is taken care of at home. “We truly do have a strong love of animals, so the customer can be ensured that we are taking care of their pets just as passionately as they would,” says Melanie. “We are not just going in to feed them and change their litter box, we are going to treat them as though they are our own pets, and want to make sure that they remain happy and healthy while the rest of the family is away.” For additional information about the services offered by Any Critter Sitter, including service areas and rates, please visit their website at AnyCritterSitter.com, or call them directly at 602.421.1324.

The Healing Power Of Animals WORDS MICHELLE GUERRERO

G

riffin Door, Griffin for short, is a Goldendoodle covered with the most wonderfully soft, fuzzy golden fur—from his cuddly head down to his cute fluffy paws. He’s 85 pounds of adorable, and absolutely irresistible to any dog lover or child who walks by. But he has a very important job to do, so he’s not always available for his fans to pet. Mom needs him to stay on task so she can maintain her mobility and balance. Griffin's mom is Lynne Lo Cascio, also a golden blonde beauty. She has the best laugh, and we can always tell when she walks into the room because the scent of flowers seems to follow her wherever she goes. She and Griffin make a great pair and have been together for about two years, meeting at a place called Power Paws, where they learned to be an inseperable team. My friend Lynne has had Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for more than 30 years. Although the effects of the MS have permeated several areas of her life, the most challenging obstacle that threatens her independence is the permanent damage to her vestibular system. With Griffin by her side, her balance challenges are almost imperceptible, but without him, she compares her balance to that of someone who’s had way too much alcohol: she’s wobbly, can’t balance well, and is at great risk of falling. His support is so important to her that she tries not to leave the house without him. When they are home, she does her best to give him time off, but he’s still always there when she needs him. “If I’m having a hard day, he’ll be a working dog inside too. He’ll take my shoes off, open doors and turn the lights on if needs 34

be. He supports me emotionally too,” Lynne confided in me one day. She recently went on a vacation, and she and her husband Sal decided not to take Griffin with them. They were both quickly reminded how much he actually does for her. Before Griffin, Lynne had depended solely on Sal to help her get around in public, and her balance is even more precarious today than it was two years ago, making things even more difficult. She always jokes about all of the equipment she’s tried for balance, saying she could put up a whole display. The only real help she’s found, other than Sal’s strong arms, has been Griffin.

“I can’t imagine what it would be like to live without Griffin,” she always says. However, Griffin isn’t her only fourlegged companion. She has a huge orange kitty named Hercules, a miniature donkey named Tom Thumb that loves nothing more than to have his ears rubbed, a miniature paint horse named Mickey, and last but not least, Pebbles, her rat terrier. They each have something special to share with Lynne, whether its through helping her or just being around as a companion, and most importantly, they all thoroughly enjoy her own special brand of magic too.
