Fall Style
September 2026 PUBLISHER

Okay, okay — I know what you're thinking: Fall is here! Bring on the sweater weather! Bring on the crisp mornings! Dig out the coats! But pump the brakes — remember you're in Missouri and that we may be mentally ready for fall, our (iced?) pumpkin-spiced drinks in hand, our football schedule pinned to the fridge, but that the weather is slow to get the memo. We may get a few days of false fall, but we'll be sweating in our flannels for a few more weeks! But that's alright! We can still get in the fall spirit, even if we have to take that Chiefs sweatshirt off after 10 a.m. And no matter the weather, we've got plenty of ways for you to get into that autumnal mindset here in our September style issue. First up, would it even be fall without a trip to the pumpkin patch? Of course, our pick, right here in the Northland, is Carolyn's Pumpkin Patch, where fall would not be complete without a visit walking through their acres of fun, apple cider donut in hand. Their season starts September 19, so mark your calendars — surely we can don a sweatshirt by then?! Next, we're just a little obsessed with Monica of Mum & Gourd, who spends her fall days piling pumpkins and mums on Northland porches so you know which of your neighbors truly know how to do autumn right. We talk about how she came to be the KC's pumpkin fairy, and she even shares some wisdom on how to replicate her magic on your own porch (though of course, she'd be more than happy to do it for you!). Lastly, it wouldn't be fall without a trip to Weston, with its Applefest starting off October. And if you're looking for a way to make the most of the autumn weekends, look no further than the stylish apartment above Cactus Creek on Main Street, decorated by its antique-loving owner Tracy Smith. We tour the walls of her apartment in the magazine and admire the stylish decor that only Tracy can create. We hope your September is full of style — whether, to you, that means putting on your favorite sweater (regardless of the weather), doing a fall refresh on your space or spending every weekend at the pumpkin patch. Until next month, K AT I E C U R R I D , E D I T O R @NORTHLANDCITYLIFESTYLE

There are places that hold stories in their walls. Not metaphorically, but literally in the stone and brick and wood of a building that has stood through more than a century and a half of American life. The apartment above Cactus Creek on Main Street in Weston is one of those places. And now, for the first time, Tracy Smith is sharing it with the world. CONTINUED >

The building's story begins in the 1840s, when its footprint housed the first retail business ever built in Weston. That original structure was called Cody's Hemp House, and it was owned by the uncle of one William Frederick Cody — better known to history as Buffalo Bill. Young Buffalo Bill would come out on weekends to help his uncle run the shop. The stone foundation beneath the building is original, a quiet testament to everything that has stood on this ground. The structure that exists today was built in 1910 by the Doppler family, who raised their brick walls from that same historic foundation and opened a mercantile on the ground floor. The Dopplers lived in the apartment upstairs, a detail that feels entirely fitting. There is something deeply domestic and alive about this space. Over the decades that followed, the building has been a shoe store, a Western Auto, a barbershop and bar operating side by side, a plumbing and HVAC shop, and an antique mall. Cactus Creek, Tracy's retail shop, opened here in 2010. For the first fifteen years that Tracy owned the building, the upstairs apartment was home to a private family space above the hum of the shop below. She watched sunsets from the balcony. She raised her kids there. When they grew up and moved on, she found herself sitting with something she didn't want to keep to herself and decided to open up the space as a short-term rental. "I just wanted to share it with the rest of the world," Tracy says. "It's been such a beautiful thing to live there and get to experience downtown, to sit on the balcony and watch the sunset." Getting the apartment ready to welcome guests took real effort. A post-pandemic remodel opened CONTINUED >

up the space. The original 1910 construction was shotgun style, a series of individual rooms built before electricity. Tracy worked to give each room its own personality while letting the bones of the building do what they've always done. One room has the feel of a well-traveled young wanderer, full of music and movement and a certain restless spirit. Another leans into something softer — a cottage warmth, quiet and feminine. The front room is the largest, and it opens directly onto the balcony. It is, by all accounts, the kind of room you sink into and don't want to leave. The three-bedroom, one-bath apartment is available seasonally, which Tracy has come to see less as a limitation and more as part of its character. Like the building itself, it operates on its own terms. Guests who want to know when
it's open are encouraged to follow Cactus Creek on social media, where Tracy shares updates on availability. Weston is already a destination; a town that rewards the people who slow down long enough to notice what's there. An overnight stay above Cactus Creek is an invitation to do exactly that. To wake up on Main Street, step out onto a balcony that has seen more than a century of Missouri mornings, and feel, if only for a weekend, like you belong to a place with real roots. For more information, visit cactuscreekshop.com and follow the link to the apartment or find them on Airbnb and Vrbo. You can also find Cactus Creek on Facebook or on Instagram @cactuscreek. You can visit the Cactus Creek shop in downtown Weston at 400 Main Street.

THE PUMPKIN FAIRY
Meet the Northland nurse turned pumpkin stylist behind Mum & Gourd ARTICLE BY KATIE CURRID

C UR B A P P E A L | HO ME + D E SIGN
For Monica Hiser, fall porch styling started as a long-distance experiment. During frequent visits to family in West Texas, a place where a fully dressed porch each October is practically expected, she started thinking, I’d love to do that. So she did. She styled her own porch first. Then neighbors started asking about it. Then family members. Then, of all people, her hairstylist looked at her and said, “I can totally see you making a business out of this.” At the time, Monica was working in a corporate office. She’s an ICU nurse by trade, but after the height of the pandemic and working through some difficult years in healthcare, she didn’t want to go back to the bedside, and she didn’t want to stay in the corporate world either. She needed something else. “It was about bringing joy and working with something earthy and natural,” she says. Pumpkins, as it turns out, were exactly that. “If a pumpkin dies, it’s not a tragedy,” she says. What began as a hobby website and a few conversations with local farmers became Mum & Gourd, which she started last year. Monica was nervous about it at first — certainly no one would want what she liked; someone would hate her designs. “Turns out, nobody hates it so far,” she laughs. Now, her garage doubles as a fall pumpkin warehouse, sorted by color, ready for decorating from September through November. But ask Monica what she actually wants Mum & Gourd to become, and it’s not about the pumpkins at all — it’s about memories. “I would love to become a part of families’ traditions,” she says. “Like, ‘Oh, we always get these pumpkins.’ Something they look forward to every year.” Her dream is to be the neighborhood’s pumpkin fairy — the person families wait for every fall, the same way they wait for the first cool morning or the first pumpkin spice latte.
PORCH DECORATING TIPS FROM THE PRO
If you want to take fall up a notch and style your porch for the season, Monica has some wisdom to impart. 1. Start by taking cues from nature: look at your landscaping, the colors and textures already surrounding your home, and even the color of your house itself. Pumpkins and gourds come in enough varieties that you can almost always find ones that complement what’s already there. 2. Don’t be afraid to stack pumpkins. Monica says that’s where the magic happens. And pumpkins don’t need to sit any particular way. Turn them on their sides, lay them at an angle, let the stem face wherever it wants. 3. If you’re working with a budget, a straw bale (not a hay bale) makes a great hidden base. Mound your pumpkins around it, and you’ll get height and volume without buying twice as many pumpkins. 4. Scale matters, too. A porch full of same-sized pumpkins is a look, but varying sizes and colors adds texture and depth — pulling in the fuller palette of the season. CONTINUED >

And since a display doesn’t have to be static, Monica recommends building one that you can add interest to throughout the season: add school colors for homecoming in September, swap in Halloween touches in October, and adjust again for Thanksgiving. Monica says this helps stretch your dollar and makes things last the whole season, rather than replacing a display every few weeks. 5. When it’s time to clean pumpkins, a mild bleach solution works for washing and disinfecting, stem included. For a subtle shine, dab a little coconut oil on the pumpkin’s highest points — but never near the stem. “The stem is like an umbilical cord,” Monica says. “Keep it clean and dry.”Looking to leave the magic to the pumpkin fairy herself? Mum & Gourd offers small, medium, large, and over-the-top packages, plus custom designs for anything from all-white pumpkins to homecoming color schemes, and she services the entire area. Booking is open now — and she also has other seasonal offerings outside of autumn, so be sure to follow her on social media to see what she does for winter, spring and summer, too! FALLING FOR CAROLYN'S THREE DECADES IN, CAROLYN'S PUMPKIN PATCH IS A LIBERTY FAMILY TRADITION ARTICLE BY REILLY ATKINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOM FUNK PHOTOS
24
H OT SP OT | L I FE + C ULTURE
Nothing says fall quite like a trip to the pumpkin patch, but Carolyn’s Pumpkin Patch in Liberty might be the most fall of them all. Carolyn Raasch started her pumpkin patch in 1991, setting aside 20 acres of her family’s farm for the endeavor. When the highway opened, it seemed like a great way to bring in extra revenue and have fall fun with her family. Today, it’s grown exponentially, and this year will see tens of thousands of visitors eager to get their fall fix. “We love fall,” Carolyn says. “It’s the culmination of a year of hard work on the farm, and spending it celebrating with our family and the pumpkin patch visitors is so special.” Carolyn’s Pumpkin Patch is a perfect way to spend a fall day with the family. Kids of all ages can enjoy wagon and train rides, and even take a spin on a former Worlds of Fun carousel. Farmloving kiddos will especially love interacting with animals at the petting barn, rooting for their favorite swine at the pig races, hearing a song from Zack the Singing Tractor, and making the brand new crank tractor roar and sputter. Picking isn’t the only thing you can do with pumpkins at Carolyn’s. A visit to the Red Barn Bakery, country store, or The Depot will greet you with dozens of pumpkin treats to choose from, including the famous fresh pumpkin donuts. On weekends, the coffee cart will give you a quick boost and your annual dose of pumpkin spice. Looking for a bit more of a thrill? Pop by the Pumpkinator. Every half hour on weekends, this show will treat your family to high-flying pumpkin fun, as the pumpkinator launches gourds into the air and across an open field. If that doesn’t scratch the itch, you can take aim yourself with apple cannons or the paintball gallery. You don’t need a carload of kids to have fun at Carolyn’s, though. There’s plenty of fun to be had for the kids at heart, CONTINUED >

too. Grown-up visitors can stop by the depot for a glass of wine, beer, or a wine slushie. Then, head to the sports barn to go head-to-head in basketball shots, skeeball, baseball throwing, or wall ball. On your way out, you can stop by the gift shop for tasty treats, fall-themed home decor, or accessories made by local artists. Carolyn’s Pumpkin Patch has become a multi-generational tradition for Northland families. People who came to the patch as small children now return with small children of their own, eager to share their favorite fall memories. The farm isn’t short on photo opportunities to capture the majesty of autumn with your own family. The patch itself is a perfect place to snap a photo of your little ones nestled among the bright orange pumpkins, but to be fully surrounded, make sure to take a quick stop at the pumpkin house. This quaint
wooden frame is laden with pumpkins, creating a perfect backdrop to showcase your family’s best autumnal outfits. There are plenty of cutouts, trucks, and wagons throughout the patch to get the right shot. Don’t forget to stop by the “How Tall This Fall?” photo stop. Countless Northland families make it a tradition to take a photo with the sign, tracking the growth of their kiddos across the years. No matter who you are or what you’re looking for, Carolyn’s Pumpkin Patch provides the best fall has to offer, all in one spot. Fall just isn’t complete without a trip (or two!) to Carolyn’s. DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
