A love letter to our homes A few months ago, my husband and I went to look at a new house. We absolutely love our home – it was built in 1902 and has tall ceilings and plenty of character, with massive pocket doors, big windows, and those built-in features you want in an old home. But as our kids get bigger, we’ve been wanting a little land to move around, and there’s nothing like a Midwestern winter to have me craving the garage we don’t have.

The other home wasn’t quite the right fit for us, and part of me was relieved. I started to get a pit in my stomach at the thought of ever leaving our home, where we’ve raised both of our boys since babies. Our house has been a labor of love, and, like all homes, it’s so personal to us. We love it so, even if we complain about parts of it from time to time — like a family member we groan about but love deeply.

This month is our home issue, and it’s been a fun one to put together. Our nation definitely has an obsession with homes — the popularity of HGTV is only one indicator — and it’s not hard to see why. Our homes feel like an extension of ourselves, showcasing our values and personality in a tangible way.

In this issue, you’ll see plenty of home inspiration. We’ve got two beautiful home tours, both of them from Platte City — one, from Tiffany Killoren, about a couple who transformed a machine shed into a truly exquisite home. I cannot believe it used to house tractors! The other home, from design and build firm Owen Homes, also has agricultural ties — its owner is a farmer who brought reclaimed materials into the design of the home, which was added with such thoughtfulness. Neither of the homes feels very rustic, which is surprising, given their history.

We also get some tips on this year’s home trends from the owner of Textured Haus, a beautiful store that has a new home in Zona Rosa. And of course, we’d be remiss if we left out the Midwestern architectural guru himself, Frank Lloyd Wright, who has a handful of designs in Kansas City.

Diana Lambdin Meyer profiles his local buildings and beyond, so you can plan a trip around them if you wish.

Reclaimed Style OWEN HOMES HELPS A PLATTE CITY COUPLE BLEND RUSTIC AND ELEGANCE IN THEIR MODERN TUTOR HOME

ARTICLE BY KATIE CURRID | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANI CLARK PHOTOGRAPHY When you pull up to Aaron and Dana Boyd’s home, located on about 11 acres north of Platte City, you’re greeted by a beautiful view of rolling hills. Their home, a modern tutor with black and stone accents, was created by custom design and build firm Owen Homes and they knew this view was one of the most important parts to incorporate into the house.

But the view wasn’t the only thing that the homeowners wanted to include in the design of the home. Aaron, a farmer, had been collecting materials for years, such as old barn wood and flooring from the church he was brought up in. And he wanted to use them in the house.

“He and his family are generational farmers so he had collected some of this wood from barns and old homes that really tell a story of his life,” says Charielle Sowers, director of business development at Owen Homes.

“He had intended it to be a part of his future home. “It was so neat to see something that we incorporated into the build from day one, all come together at the finish.”

Sara Svehla, the interior designer on the project, was excited about this challenge.

They incorporated the old barn wood, made of teak and walnut, into the stunning fireplace in the great room. The ceiling in the primary bedroom is repurposed church flooring. Reclaimed wood was used throughout the home, in places as small as window sills.

“They absolutely had great ideas — it was just a matter of making it a reality,” says Sara. “That’s always the most challenging part for myself — taking this vision out of someone’s head and making it a real reality.”

The resulting home is a beautiful blend of old and new, and a representation of the couple.

“I think one of the reasons this house turned out so great is because we had the perfect mix in homeowners,” says Sara. “He had this really rustic style and she had a really elegant air about her. I think mixing those in this home was just what gave it that final beautiful, different edge. It’s not like every other home and every other Pinterest picture.”

The Boyds’ home is truly custom. Not only is the style a great blend of the two, but everything down to the layout was built just for them. Thoughtful touches are also included throughout the home, like special storage and laundry for Aaron’s farming clothing in the mudroom, built-in dog kennels, and lots of hidden, intentional storage solutions for Dana. It’s a testament to what working with Owen Homes can do.

“Each home that we build is unique and different. We’ve actually never built the same home twice because not every family functions the same or lives the same,” says Charielle. “We’re building custom homes that families will live in for many, many years, and some with the intent that they will pass their home onto their children. So we’re thinking through an immense amount of details from day one before we start drawing the blueprints.”

You can’t channel surf these days without stumbling across a new DIY show or real estate series dedicated to remodeling or redesigning homes.

Who hasn’t lost themselves in an episode or two about tiny houses, old school busses transformed into mobile cottages or shipping containers turned into vacation homes nicer than anything we’ve stayed in?

Although anyone can walk through a beautiful home and appreciate its appeal, it takes true vision to see beauty in a home’s potential.

Just north of Platte City is a house on a hill surrounded by trees and nature, a home built on vision and potential. Its presence is not uncommon on acreages of farmland, a 40 x 100 metal structure typically used to store farm equipment and big “toys” like those used to catch a few fish on a sunny day. The structure itself might have started as a typical machine shed, but a labor of love later, it’s now home for owners Eric and Candi Rawlings.

“This land was Eric’s grandparents, which they farmed and lived on for years,” Candi says. “My father-in-law had always wanted to build a big barn on this land and, kidding around with him, I told him that if he built

it, we’d convert it down the line to a house and have a place for him.” What started out as a not-so-serious suggestion quickly took shape, however, when her father-in-law took her up on the offer and asked her to start working on blueprints.

It wasn’t long before a new shed stood on the land, but one constructed with a future house in mind.

After storing farm equipment for a few years, the real fun began when Candi tapped into her love of interior design to transform the shed into something so much more.

“It’s not a traditional house, so I didn’t want to try to make it look like one,” Candi says. “I think that’s where people go wrong sometimes because they try to apply traditional home design concepts. You need to embrace the barndominium.”

Working with Built Rite Buildings and Morrow Contracting and Construction, they were able to transform a blank canvas metal building into a warm and welcoming home that rivals any you’ve seen on TV. “This could really be cold because it’s so spacious, so I use warm colors for that cozy fall and winter feeling,” Candi says. The walls, although all white, are given texture with board and batten that extends to the ceiling.

The concrete floors, original to when it was used as a shed, have a certain aged charm from where stains remain.

“I like to paint, sketch and draw, so I would do mock-ups to show what I was thinking,” Candi says. Not everyone involved shared her vision, however, and it took a bit of convincing on her part to sell them on a few of her choices.

The exterior, for example, is painted all black to add a modern feel. And, because more barndominiums have been built recently, Candi was able to research what other people have done to avoid design pitfalls that come with converting such a large space. “One of the mistakes that I’ve seen in barndominiums is trying to incorporate a traditional kitchen, but you have a twenty-foot wall,” she says. To avoid proportion challenges, Candi designed their kitchen without upper cabinets, instead incorporating extensive storage in the large kitchen island.

A true medley of style and functionality, the neutral colors with barn doors and black finishes attain both an industrial modern and farmhouse flair. Like any great interior design, the space is both beautiful while providing efficiencies that are key to maintaining a busy household. Interior walls have been built where needed for bedroom and bath placement on the back side of the home, but the front great room is a welcoming open space that maximizes the natural light of giant front windows. When walls are used, they provide storage, as in a hallway lined with floor-toceiling cabinetry off the kitchen that adds a design element while serving a function.

With two sons, one in college and the other a sophomore at Platte County High School, the style and design elements of the Rawlings’ home had to also provide a coziness surrounding family holidays, be comfortable for groups of boys to hang out in and host the occasional baseball team end-of-season gathering. It accomplishes that with a garage space large enough to have its own recreation area for viewing any big games and an outdoor entertaining area with firepit for chilly nights.

With a separate entrance to an in-law suite, it seems nothing has been forgotten in this home’s design…including the family dog. The spacious mudroom off the garage has a walk-in dog bath area to hose off the little rascal when she’s had a bit too much fun outside or tracked down the only rain puddle on the property like every dog likes to do.

Beautiful home, ample storage and a dog shower station? Yes, please. The right design really can make life better.

Courtney Va n d e n d a e l e It’s no secret that we’ve been spending plenty of time in our homes over the last few years, but transforming that space into a sanctuary and place of restfulness can be more challenging for some than others.

Courtney Vandendaele is the owner of Textured Haus, an upscale home furnishing store in Zona Rosa, and is here to help.

Courtney opened her store in December 2019 on the square in Liberty and moved the store over to Zona Rosa last June.

“I really just saw the need, particularly here at the Northland, for just a fun, modern home store,” says Courtney. “I majored in fashion but I’ve always kind of loved design of all kinds.”

The store is sleek and modern while still being comfortable and has something for everyone, like whimsical wall decor, colorful glass candlestick holders, or minimalist art. While the store has a distinct style, many of the pieces in her store could nestle in perfectly into a wide array of home decor styles.

Courtney is inspired by a lot of different designers, such as Cortney Bishop, Kelly Wearstler, and Justina Blakeney. She likes to mix styles and layers, adding texture and color.

“Decorating should be fun and not so serious all the time,” says Courtney. “It’s kind of my creative outlet,” says Courtney. “I love being able to use my creativity every day by merchandising the store, helping customers put items together for their own homes, and putting together fun collections.”

We talked to Courtney about some of the trends she’s seeing in home decor this year, and the ones she’s most excited to see in homes.

VIVID COLOR A bold use of color is probably the trend Courtney is most excited about this year.

While neutrals have been a mainstay for the past few years, Courtney says color is back in a big way — primarily in jewel tones and pastels. She says a fun way to introduce color in a space is wallpaper and finds it’s most effective in small spaces like a powder room. For those who aren’t quite ready to commit to wallpaper, throw pillows can be an easy way to accent, or Courtney is especially excited about colored glassware this season. Adding colorful wine glasses or candlesticks to reliable white dishes can be an easy and fun way to adopt the trend.

R I C H LY-T E X T U R E D FURNITURE Courtney says one of her favorite trends she’s seeing this year is richly-textured furniture pieces, like bouclé, velvet, and sherpa. She says while the furniture lines are similar to the sleek, modern lines of the past few years, the textured fabrics are a bit of a throwback to a 70s feel. The fun part about textured furniture is that it can still be in neutral colors, so it can tie easily into existing spaces but add a more interesting element.

S U S TA I N A B L E STYLE “We’re seeing a lot of vintage pieces,” says Courtney. “People are definitely being more eco-conscious — wanting to repurpose things and bring in those vintage finds.” Courtney says she also includes natural materials in sustainable style — things like woven grass, caning, wood, marble, and ceramic. She says these materials, unlike plastics, typically last longer and are from the earth, making them more eco-friendly.

Iris Apfel, a centenarian style icon, said “more is more” — a guiding principle of maximalism. Courtney, who describes her own style as curated maximalism, says maximalism is continuing to be mainstream this year but in a more intentional, elegant way.

She says maximalism can combine all these trends — natural elements, pops of color, and fun textures in a wellthought-out way that flows through the home. “It doesn’t just, you know, look like a Skittle came and exploded all over your home, but it’s really well thought out and still all very elegant,” says Courtney. “We’re just adding a little more fun.”

At least a million times, and I’m not exaggerating by much, I’ve crossed the Buck O’Neil Bridge from downtown Kansas City heading into the Northland.

Each time I’ve looked up at the magnificent home on the bluff overlooking the Missouri River and thought “wow, what a great house that must be.”

Finally, after all these years, I was able to peek inside.

The Bott House, as it’s known, was designed in the late 1950s by Frank Lloyd Wright for Frank and Eloise Bott. It was this bluff and the magnificent view of the Missouri River that attracted America’s most famous architect to the site.

Eloise often consulted Homer Williams, an architect and former principal with WSKF in North Kansas City, about the unique demands of caring for an FLW home. After Eloise’s death in 1987, Williams was given the first right to purchase.

Furnishings are original to the house, although some plumbing has been updated. And there’s that portion of the mahogany woodwork in one bedroom. A clogged drain flooded the room, so Williams

replaced the original Honduran mahogany, which is no longer available, with Philippine mahogany. You can’t tell the difference.

Williams is quick to point out that one of the showers is made of mahogany and the unique tile in the bathrooms. On a tour of the house, you’ll see mitered glass windows and wall-hung toilets, both FLW inventions.

Fireplaces are central to an FLW home design, but the Bott House has something a little special. The stones in this massive structure came from a fence in the Kansas Flint Hills. More than 150 years ago, ranchers would build fences from stone, because it was the most readily available resource. But by the 1950s, with the advent of metal fences, ranchers were begging people to remove the rocks.

completed in 1916. It is the last of his prairie-style designs and his personal favorite living room.

The airy room features six French doors that open onto a terrace and a magnificent garden. A 20’ X 40’ lily pond is surrounded by yellow iris, hollyhocks, Lady in Red ferns and more. A hydrangea is original to the house.

Continuing our FLW tour, let’s head north to Oskaloosa, Iowa for a look at the Alsop House. Dating to 1947, the house was recently purchased by Mia Reed, an artist who is in the process of restoring windows, doors, flooring and furniture.

Reed’s father was a Wright contemporary. She plans to create an art gallery featuring her father’s architectural archives, as well as those of FLW. The Alsop Art Gallery will also celebrate local artists in individual exhibits. SLEEP IN A FLW DESIGN If you love FLW so much that you want to overnight in his designs, there are two options for you within an easy drive.

North on I-35, visit Mason City, Iowa, home of the Music Man, but that’s another story. The Historic Park Inn opened in 1910 as part bank, part office building, part hotel. With 27 rooms, the space has been upgraded with modern amenities without losing the FLW design components that place it on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the only remaining FLWdesigned hotel in the world. Book a room at historicparkinn.com Price Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma is FLW’s only skyscraper. It’s called “the tree that escaped from a crowded forest,” because it is based on a design for a skyscraper to be built in New York, thus the crowded forest.

Price Tower was built for the Price Oil Company in the 1950s as a 19-story office and apartment building. It was remodeled in 2003, turning six of the upper f loors into a hotel. The 22 guest rooms include three two-story suites. The bathrooms are original, so rather small by today’s standards.

Each room has a full wall of windows and heated f loors.

The first floor houses an art gallery and restaurant. Floors 15 and 16 are home to the Copper Bar restaurant and one of the best views in all of Oklahoma.

The entire building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
